Roger Taylor live at the Wulfrun Hall in Wolverhampton, UK - March 30, 1999
Fan Stories
“I'll never forget the night I saw Brian and Roger at Wolverhampton Wulfrun Hall, my home city (well, actually, it was a town then, we didn't become a city until the end of 1999!). It will stay with me forever, although I live in hope they will return one day with some new material! We had no warning in advance about Brian coming, not even as a guest just to watch. The band arrived quite late on at the venue (well, I'm not sure if it was late but it was getting on for 5pm I think), they didn't mention it but we heard them soundchecking 'Rock And Roll' and according to legend one of the roadies told someone that BHM was coming when they asked if there was a special guest. We thought it was going to be Robert Plant as he lives nearby, about ten miles out of the city. It certainly wasn't going to be one of Slade, lol! We weren't let into the venue until really late and when we got in we could see tinkering with some AC30's by someone that looked suspiciously like Pete (BHM's roadie). He had a really naff rain mack on and was desperately trying to hide the Red Special underneath it. Well, it looked remarkably like the nick of the RS! Nobody knew for sure that Brian was going to be there, most people seemed oblivious to Pete being there even. My mate said maybe someone was going to play an RS copy but I told him he was being silly. The set list was different to usual and I was waiting for Brian every time they played a Queen song. When he eventually emerged (dodgy shirt!) for 'Under Pressure' the place went mad. In between 'Under Pressure' and 'Rock and Roll' he did say something which was lost in the moment but listening to the recording of the night sounds like 'Lot of fun, init?'. The roar was immense. When Roger announced they were going to do something from the past I was hoping it was going to be an early Queen track, I suppose I should have guessed it was 'Rock and Roll' having heard the sound check. The final moment of the evening brought us 'Radio Ga Ga' and I have to say it was one of the better moments of my life seeing two of my heroes up on stage and being part of the mass of people doing the hand movements. I missed the real Queen, but this was the next best thing for me. Treana's guitarist (Alden Evans?) looked totally swept away being on stage with Brian. Mind you, wouldn't you be? Apparently Brian arrived in a VW Camper van and was mobbed when they left afterwards, leaving Roger to walk to his mode of transport almost unnoticed! It was just after this that Roger announced they were going to do some new stuff (still waiting...) but events around that time seem to have led to the musical and the current status of tour rumour. I walk by the Wulfrun quite often and I can never get that night out of my mind. I was buzzing for weeks, months afterwards, even now it sends a shiver down the spine. Wonderful!” - Dave
“Arrived with Cathy Highfire (many many thanx to Cathy for driving and even suggesting going to Wolverhampton) around 11.30 and joined up with the small queue (Hi Sandie, Kevin & Lisa). Quite a subdued wait, until the gorgeous Treana was spotted getting off the bright orange Tour Bus. A mass exodus followed to greet Treana, who as always was extremely charming. Managed to get the Surrender 7" signed by her and also a 9"x6" photo that I took during her fantastic performance at the Leadmill. Had a very brief chat with her, which resulted in her telling me that she was enjoying the tour, although it was very tiring. She then mentioned that we were in for a treat in tonight's performance (teasing us with the line 'That's if HE turns up'). Who could this special guest be?????? Waiting for RT to turn up at the soundcheck, we discussed the special guest. Could it be local boy Noddy Holder (Surely not!) or a repeat performance from Uncle Bob Geldof?????. Our suspicions were roused when the band started to intensely rehearse Led Zep's 'Rock and Roll', and we all jumped to the conclusion it could be local lad Robert Plant. We just had to wait and see. RT once again managed to slip into the soundcheck (at around 6.15pm) with only a couple of clipboarders getting autographs. Then no sooner had we heard the soundcheck, it was time to be let in. AAAAArrrrrrrrgggggggghhhhhhhhhhh. Very annoyed to be extensively searched before going in and finding that the doors to the hall were actually locked and we had to congregate in the bar next door. After all those hours of queuing, a disorganised array of fans was waiting impatiently to get in. Finally we were let in and rushed to the front. Phew managed to get there OK. We then had to endure a 90 minute wait before Treana came on to do her routine set. Absolutely storming as usual. If you've not seen this lovely lass weave her magic spell with that fantastically powerful voice, then you must!!!!!!!!!!. Long may she continue. With an empty stage, and lights back up, tension was mounting with the crowd for the arrival of RT, which we all knew to be imminent. The suspicions of the special guest were roused even more, when there was some tinkering with a vox amp and a very familiar guitar being tuned (with the technician trying not to show the guitar to us). The tension became greater when the lights dimmed and an aural opening of someone entering a room and turning on the electric fire, at which the cue of strobe lights and the fire on the stage backdrop lighting up. The drums of We Will Rock You belted out with Prior and RT behind his Sleishman drum kit thrashing out that familiar beat. Moving down to centre stage, RT (wearing that same jacket and Armani shirt) took to the raw and vibrant vocals (this time word perfect); a somewhat more energetic performance than that of BM in '98. Still a storming show opener. Then it was straight down to recent times with Pressure On, Haircuts and Believe in Yourself, with the crowd getting behind the lyrics of Haircuts and pointing at RT during 'You're so f**king cool', with which RT pointed to us all on the front row, smiling away. Roger particularly enjoyed the green pair of skimpy knickers thrown at him by Lisa of Newcastle during I Want To Break Free ("This ones for John Deacon" - RT), which he duly picked up and threw at Jason Falloon ("rhymes with Balloon" - RT), laughing. Treana joined RT for London Town and Surrender and then they were off. RT managed to shed those shades for the 1st encore, which consisted of I'm In Love With My Car and Strange Frontier, which Cathy and probably most of the females, screamed uncontrollably.
For the 2nd encore, RT announced that he "found someone wandering outside" and duly announced... "Mr Brian May!!!!!", who entered (wearing another very loud shirt) the stage to a receptively large applause. A quick friendly gesture with RT and then straight down to business, with Under Pressure (Treana once again with immense vocals). Then it was onto Rock And Roll (in place of Happiness), with BM taking his 'normal role' of lead guitarist and letting RT have all the limelight. Finally the superb set ended with Radio Ga Ga, finishing another great performance (fuelled by the appearance of BM). Good to witness RT + BM back on stage together again. The sound was awesome, although a little distorted sometimes at its' loudest. My ears are still ringing the day after!!!!!!!!!!!!” - Dr. Andy Green

I love the simplicity of this T5 Transporter. The subtle mods make it so clean to look at, yet together, they make it a striking camper to look at.
This is why I went for a black and white effect. It stops the eye from being distracted by surrounding colours.

What Happened to the VW Bus? Is It Coming Back?
Actually, nothing happened to the VW bus. It just became less popular, temporarily, in the United States. And yes, it is coming back in a big way!
After the 1970s, the U.S. shut down VW bus manufacturing since the popular van was no longer was able to meet new safety and emissions standards. Production continued in Brazil, however, until 2014, when Brazil enacted new standards that the current model of the bus couldn’t meet. When that happened, the German production factory shut down its production after 63 years – the longest running time of any vehicle ever.
Now, many people are excited to learn the Volkswagen Bus is coming back next year, in 2024 – as the ID. Buzz (yes, that is its name!). It’s electric, eclectic and brings back a hint of the hippie movement psychedelic nostalgia with its neon colors: tangerine, lime, grape and more. Volkswagen is hoping to once again earn the respect and admiration of a new generation of car buyers.
One reason the VW bus became obsolete was its failing safety measures. No matter what you choose to drive, being safely prepared for the road by purchasing affordable car insurance will ensure your favorite vehicle never goes out of style.
The Peculiar History of the VW Bus
Although many people in the U.S. think of the iconic Volkswagen bus as the original hippie van from the 1960s, it has a different association in Europe, where it was born in Germany in the 1940s. Colloquially called the VW Bus in America and the VW Camper in the UK, the Volkswagen bus was modeled after the German Plattenwagen, a vehicle originally made to carry car parts. Dutch businessman, race car driver, winemaker and Olympian Ben Pon, always looking for something new and already selling the hugely popular VW Beetle in the United States, saw the Plattenwagen during a tour of the Volkswagen plant in West Germany one day and the lightbulb went off.
The Beetle paved the way for what was known then as the VW Transporter, later called the Volkswagen Microbus and then, in later years, the Bus. In the 1950s when the Transporter hit the market, buyers could choose from 8 different models, all designed to answer a specific need. Today, there are more than 15 variations of the Transporter (or T models) on the market.
For example, the Kombi VW bus featured removable rear seats so consumers could use the van to carry cargo (and people). A variety of side windows options also made an appearance during these days, with a low-end version offering 11-15 windows spaced around the van and high-end versions offering 23-window VW buses. Early models carried a hard to clean split front windshield, earning it one of many nicknames, “the Splitty.” Volkswagen did away with this unpopular feature, creating a solid front windshield.
In Europe, families and friends used the popular bus for camping trips, as did Americans, who also plastered peace signs all over it and drove it to see Jerry Garcia and the Grateful Dead. Europeans turned it into an ambulance, and everyone used its large interior for deliveries and carting stuff around.
In the 1960s, things began to turn around in the U.S. market when people became more concerned with vehicle safety and emissions – and something known as the chicken tax.
Chicken Tax
The Chicken War started when American farmers adopted poultry factory farming practices in the 1950s. Soon, chicken was being exported to Europe in mind-boggling numbers – which didn’t sit well with German farmers. Feathers flew and, as a result, high tariffs were implemented on imported chicken in Europe.
In America, the United Auto Workers were threatening a strike over the importing of the popular Volkswagen Type 2 pickup truck.
In response to both of the above, President Johnson imposed a 25% tax on imported light trucks. Called the Chicken Tax, it’s still in effect today. The effect on the Volkswagen is, in order to avoid the Chicken Tax, the vehicle cannot be sold as a truck or any kind of commercial vehicle.
Today’s Volkswagen Bus
Today, three different iterations of the VW bus are on the production line at a plant in Hanover, Germany. The model year T6 continues to be built with a van platform but is ceasing production with the new ID. Buzz. This is its last year. The T7 is a medium-sized Transporter with a large cargo area marketed as a plug-in hybrid. And the newest member of this family of unconventional members is the Buzz, due in the U.S. in 2024.
In Europe, the electric Buzz rolled into the market in 2022 and found new categories to master, including as a police car, a school bus, a postal truck and much more. But in America, the Buzz will never climb to the exalted ranks of a service vehicle. The chicken tax took care of that. It will always be a passenger van on these shores.
The Buzz About the Buzz
Let’s talk specifics about this new van that’s supposed to bring us all back to the days of concerts, tie-dye and peace signs. Of course, it is electric. But what other changes will we see?
Appearance: Some people think the new Buzz looks similar to the old Scooby-Doo van. Others think it looks like what might happen if a modern minivan had a baby with a sleek sports car. It certainly no longer has the goofy smile of the old VW Bus. Some people say it looks like an angry cousin.
Mechanics: It’s no longer necessary to carry around the “How to Fix Your Volkswagen for the Complete Idiot” and 3 wrenches. The downside is that a paper clip and a rubber band won’t fix the rear engine until you can get it to a shop. And, gasp, it comes in automatic transmission, too. Staying on top of maintenance will get you further.
Noise and Driving: If you’ve ever driven or ridden in an older VW Microbus, you already know how noisy it was, with bone-jarring shakes and rattles. It may – or may not – make it up that steep hill in the mountains of Colorado. Perhaps try reverse to make it up? Today’s version will have up to 201 horsepower (the original had an HP of two digits). It’s supposed to be much easier to maneuver. You’ve got to wonder if they took out all the fun!
Smart Car: You probably won’t consider the new Buzz as you did its distant little brother or sister. In the 60s, the bus was considered a valuable and friendly member of the family. The Buzz is more like the rather stern computer Hal in “2001: A Space Odyssey (except for the part where Hal goes crazy and murders the crew). That won’t happen with Buzz, but it may stop you from switching lanes without signaling or flashing colors at you if there’s an obstruction in the road.
Overall, VW is banking on the new trend for electrical vehicles to help it become the world player it once was with the Beetle and the original VW bus in decades past. And although it may cost quite a bit more than the original ($1,800 vs $40,000), there are still fans clamoring to get a piece of yesterday for today.

Guide to Wedding Car Hire: Making Your Special Day Extra Memorable
Your wedding day is one of the most important events of your life, and every detail counts. From the venue to the dress, each element should reflect the magic of the occasion. One key component often overlooked but just as significant is the wedding car hire. Choosing the right car for your big day adds a touch of luxury, style, and conveniences’, ensuring you arrives and leave your ceremony in elegance.
This guide will walk you through the process of selecting the perfect wedding car and explain why hiring one is a vital aspect of your wedding planning.
Why Hire a Wedding Car?
The transportation on your wedding day is more than just a ride. It’s a chance to make an entrance, enhance the wedding experience, and ensure your comfort on a potentially hectic day. Here’s why hiring a wedding car is a smart choice:
Elegance and Style: A beautifully designed car adds a classic or modern touch to your day. Whether you opt for a vintage Rolls-Royce, a luxurious Bentley, or a modern limousine, the right vehicle makes a statement and looks stunning in photos.
Convenience: Wedding days are often tight on schedule. Having a dedicated car service ensures that you and your bridal party arrive at the ceremony, reception, or other destinations on time without the stress of traffic or parking.
Memorable Experience: Hiring a chauffeur-driven car enhances the entire experience. You and your partner can relax, enjoy the ride, and take in the moment without worrying about the logistics of transportation.
Great Photos: Wedding cars are more than just transportation—they serve as perfect backdrops for photographs. Imagine stepping out of a sleek, polished car, creating an unforgettable visual that will look timeless in your wedding album.
Types of Wedding Cars to Consider
When it comes to wedding car hire, there is a vast array of options to suit every style, budget, and preference. Here are some popular categories to choose from:
Classic and Vintage Cars:
For those who love timeless elegance, a vintage car can be the perfect fit. Options like a Rolls-Royce Phantom or a vintage Bentley can make a grand statement. These cars exude romance and nostalgia, making them ideal for a traditional or elegant wedding theme.
Luxury Cars:
If you prefer something sleek and modern, luxury cars like a Mercedes-Benz S-Class, Jaguar XJ, or a Bentley Mulsanne offer unmatched sophistication and comfort. These cars are known for their luxurious interiors and smooth rides, making your journey as comfortable as possible.
Limousines:
Stretch limousines are a popular choice for weddings. They are spacious enough to accommodate the bridal party or a larger group, offering convenience without sacrificing luxury. Limousines also offer privacy, with tinted windows and personal chauffeurs catering to your needs.
Sports Cars:
For couples looking for a unique and contemporary flair, sports cars like Ferraris, Lamborghinis, or Aston Martins add a bold statement to their entrance and exit. These high-performance vehicles can match modern, adventurous wedding themes.
Vintage VW Camper Vans:
For those planning a more laid-back or bohemian wedding, a retro-style VW Camper Van can be a quirky, stylish option. These vehicles have a fun, nostalgic vibe and are perfect for outdoor or rustic weddings.
How to Choose the Right Wedding Car
Match the Theme: The style of the wedding car should complement the overall theme of your wedding. For example, a vintage car would suit a classic, elegant wedding, while a sports car would fit a modern, trendy celebration.
Consider Comfort: Your wedding day is long, and you’ll spend time in the car traveling between venues. Choose a vehicle that’s spacious enough for your attire, especially if you’re wearing a large dress. Make sure it provides comfort, especially for the bride and groom.
Plan for the Bridal Party: Depending on the size of your bridal party, you may want to consider hiring additional cars. Some couples hire a separate vehicle for the bridal party or family members, ensuring everyone travels in comfort and style.
Book Early: Wedding cars, especially popular models, can get booked up fast, particularly during peak wedding seasons. It’s essential to book your car well in advance to secure your preferred choice.
Check the Details: Before signing a contract, make sure you understand what’s included in the wedding car hire package. Ask about things like the duration of the hire, the route, whether the car will be decorated, and what happens in case of delays.
Final Thoughts
Your wedding day is a momentous occasion that should be nothing short of extraordinary. Hiring a wedding car ensures that you make a grand entrance and exit in style, leaving you with lasting memories and beautiful photos. By choosing a vehicle that fits your theme and personal taste, you can add that extra touch of luxury to your special day, ensuring every moment is as magical as you dreamed it would be.

Doch mal Hand aufs Herz! Was oder welcher Bulli hat bei euch die Bullimania ausgelöst?

I am of the very strongly held opinion that these trucks represent a peak in personal transport we are yet to get back up to.
You could have six people, four people playing cards, two people sleeping, whatever fucking arrangement the lower left picture is supposed to be (two people fucking, one driving, one watching???), all in, what, 3.29? That's not even 130"!!!
And the roof could be camperized or have TWO electric glass panels!
Oh, right, and there's those cool aftermarket VW van-looking faces for it.
All this with AWD and a supercharged rear engine (hence, no joke, this being known as "The Porsche of the farmland" in Japan)! What's not to love?
Except for how insanely unsafe they are, that is. BUT IS THAT NOT WHAT TECHNOLOGY IS FOR DAMMIT
What the heck is this cute lil thang I saw today??
1990-1999 Subaru Sambar Firetruck
(note: i think it’s specifically a 92-93 but i’m not sure enough to commit to that)
#jokes aside the new kei vans are pretty safe and they are looking incredible too#look up the honda n van for some absolutely insane use of space#ALL the passenger seats fold absolutely flat into the floor it is insane#also I talked with the lead of Audi interior design#and it seems they're getting safety devices to implement faster than they can miniaturize them#hence cars getting bigger for the same interior space as of late
