Paparazzi, Celebrity Deals, and David Duchovny
Credit to: ibble dibble's top-tier videos explaining the inner workings of upper echelon society. Clips taken from her video here.
Paparazzi is part and parcel with celebrity culture. Celebrities themselves likely have to deal with harassment, boundary stomping, and any and all pap craziness as regularly as their juice cleanse bowel movements.
However. All celebrities have contractual obligations with at least one paparazzi company, picking and choosing which locations and events they want leaked to the press; and when' and how "edited" the final results will appear.
It's not so much manipulation (though it can be) as strategy: they want to live their lives on their own terms but also know the health of their projects and "brand" depends on a certain degree of public exposure and opinion. Therefore, celebrities in New York-- as mentioned in the video-- and, more relevant to this post, California exist mostly unmolested, surfacing for promotional circuits or other public and social events. Paps who harass, stalk, or follow a celebrity, unwanted, are generally bottom feeders who are too foolish or greedy to let a quick opportunity pass in exchange for, perhaps, a deal with that celebrity's team later down the line.
In David Duchovny's case, his brother summed up the situation quite succinctly here: "We'll go out to dinner, and out from the weeds pops up some paparazzi guy shooting away, y'know. Dave'll be like-- he'll know his name, he'll go, 'Look, Warren, I thought we talked about this: you can shoot me surfing, you can shoot me on the beach, which I let you do, but I'm here with my wife-- you said you wouldn't.' 'Oh, I gotta make a living, gotta make a living!'-- and then they, like, disappear like little rodents under the bush...."
Therein, Danny delineated between cooperative pap shots and vulturistic opportunism-- two very different beasts. (Beast One keeps their distance, takes their shots, and splits the proceeds between their company and the celebrity. Beast Two tails after and mouth breathes in the celebrity's vicinity, opening themselves up to harassment charges or future opportunity loss. And if Beast Two is making money off of informants, the celebrity will be able to quickly narrow down who in their close circle has tipped off the paps.)
It's part of the business; and probably a contributing factor to David expressing "shame" or embarrassment over being an actor: his work is an artistic expression of himself, yes; but as an actor turned director and author and musician, he won't be able to escape "selling" himself, to an extent, to stay relevant (a frustration he's echoed since the early days.)
This post wasn't written out of judgment, just exploration. After all, even girl scouts have to make numbers.

you’re full of too many fragile fragmented bones
like a bird with
too little meat between the thorns
of your ribs
i’m picking out pieces, vulturistic beak
delicate
and it never never never fills me up just leaves me
desolate. desperate.
i need not be picky. i need not be picking. i’ll
devour you whole
feel you flutter inside me. feel your feathers while
you mull
over and over and over and. would you use
that sharp beak
to cut your way out of my stomach? god knows
you would make
a wonderful cannibal.

Chapter 42: BURNING DOWN THE HOUSE! [Epilogue]
✰ / ✰
Word Count: 812
TWs: Themes of death, suicide mention, fire/arson
⛤⛤⛤
“Hello, guard… not going to make me run away this time?” William’s voice was a distorted growl with a metallic tinge. He sounded as if he were in constant pain. Good. Michael didn’t respond, waiting for him to come to the doorway, where they would finally be able to face each other properly. He continued to shuffle forward. “Cat got your tongue? Or did you finally quit, and they haven’t gotten a replacement yet?”
His large hand braced the doorframe as he struggled to face what he expected to be an empty room. Then he froze. His silver eyes locked onto Michael’s face.
“Not who you were expecting… father?” Michael asked, remaining calm, his back straight. There was a stunned silence.
“Impossible…”
“You said it yourself, I wouldn’t die. Why are you so surprised?”
“I meant it metaphorically, not that Elizabeth would’ve understood,” William snapped. “I didn’t expect for you to actually survive! How the Hell…?”
“Not all of that… thing, exited me when it did. The remaining metal means my continued existence. Fascinating, isn’t it?”
“So what, you’ve come to gloat that you, too, can be immortal?” He then chuckled like a gate in need of oil, “It’s not all it’s cracked up to be, kid! I know that now.”
“I would say, then you must feel sorry for what you’ve done, but I know you…”
“It was necessary to further the strength that is knowledge. Of course I have my regrets, but what scientist, what artist, doesn’t?”
“Is that what you think of yourself, now? An artist? Was your canvas Freddy’s, and the children’s blood paint, then?”
“Your criticisms don’t phase me, Michael. Before I ask you why you’re here, tell me… whatever happened to Norman Verne?”
“I suspect he lost his mind and dug himself a grave to lie in after giving up the rights to the Fazbear Entertainment Company, but I don’t know and I don’t care. We never expected him to interfere with our plans, he seems pretty harmless without your influence, so we didn’t keep tabs.”
“‘We?’ ‘Our?’”
Michael smirked. “Well, I didn’t track you down alone, now did I?”
“Who’s willingly hanging out with the corpse of my bastard son??”
“An old friend.”
It took three seconds for Springtrap’s eyes to widen, his grip on the doorframe tightening. “Surely you don’t mean… he’s not… he…”
“Don’t you remember? His body went missing before they could take him to the morgue.” Michael stood and laughed, turning on the building’s intercom and speaking into the microphone. “Y’hear that, Charlie? Henry’s alive! Your father is alive!”
“Why fake his death, then?! What was the point?!”
“Believe me, he was seriously contemplating it. Then, like me, he realized the deaths weren’t going to stop unless someone competent was on the case. So, to avoid prying eyes, especially vulturistic news reporters seeking a story on Charlie’s death, he ‘hanged’ himself. It was all very elaborate. He slipped away when no one was looking after he was sure he had been reported dead. He knew it was you before anyone else, but… things got out of hand before he could pin it on you.” He turned to the microphone again, “Charlie, he’s so proud of you for sticking this out. And he’s so happy that the Marionette did indeed save you, even if he had no idea something like this could happen…”
William was fuming. “Fine! So Henry’s alive, and you’re a freak. What’s your plan, here? You can’t kill me again, and it’s torturous enough having to share this space with these children’s souls, why not just leave me here to rust until I’m rendered incapacitated?”
“Because this isn’t about you, you self-centred prick. It’s about freeing them, and damning you.”
“What…?”
“I snuck in and doused the place in gasoline before my shift. Guess nobody noticed.” He produced a box of matches from his pocket. “Now, what was it Bruce Willis said in that one movie? Yippee-ki-yay, motherfucker?”
“NO!” The word had barely escaped his torn vocal cords before Michael struck the match and dropped it to the floor. The room was almost immediately engulfed in flames. Rather than trying to run, Michael calmly sat back in the chair, propping his feet up on the desk as he placed a pair of headphones over his ears.
He began to sing over the screams and begging of his father. “I fell into a burning ring of fire, I went down, down, down, and the flames went higher, and it burns, burns, burns. The ring of fire, the ring of fire…~”
William dragged himself through the flames. Blinded by rage and the innate fear of fire, he wrapped his hands around his son’s neck, lifting him from the chair and choking the song from his lungs as thick, black smoke drowned them both. All the while, Michael grinned. He had won.

I think it's very telling when ppl who work tirelessly to equate TERFs with tumblr bullshit such as "exclusionists" or "antis" spend more time talking about fanfiction drama and their own disinterpretation of past events ("all radical queers died of AIDS", etc) than the danger TERFs currently, really pose to trans women (and trans ppl in general)
Really uncovers their priorities and imo shows the way the suffering of trans women (and trans ppl in general) is just like, used to make whatever point some cis rando feels like making today

post/610979313723047936/ Ok??? but that vulturistic attitude towards characters, ESPECIALLY those that EXPLICITLY say that they are forever homed, is disrespectful and very uncomfortable??? people have a right to be discomforted by people like you swirling around like hungry piranahas. Maybe instead look at characters that are actually UFT/UFS instead???

Atlanta Debates
Opening statements.  Started watching a little late because msnbc did not reboot a live stream when I refreshed it (instead it was Harris commenting on Bar earlier today).  Screen popped up with Warren.  Not a comment on her policies but I was struck by how academic her style is.  Then Klobuchar- thought gosh she is so centrist.  Then Bernie.  Bernie is Bernie what can I say, we know what he’s going to say.  Then Buttigieg- not as academic as Warren, also centrist, but his opening statement did not come off as centrist as Klobuchar.  Biden- I get that he is laying low with everything but I also am struck with how low he is laying.  I wish he were a win-able candidate (but had progressive politics) because I want to believe him when he says he can get trump out of office but I also just don’t think he is win-able.  He is gag-able.  Harris- not commenting on her policies here, she is a good speaker.  Booker- I think I caught his second statement.  I was surprised by how conservative his first statement that I heard was because I don’t tend to think of his conservative statements when I think about him, even though I know that a lot of people do.  Yang- OK I haven’t heard him yet.  By the time I hear him it will be past opening statements.  Ditto with other candidates.  I am surprised that Castro didn’t poll higher and make the cut.  I think he ran a strong campaign.  Oh wait!  Gabbard- I didn’t know she had critiqued Hilary Clinton.  I thought she was more conservative but am I hearing a critique of neo-liberalism now?  And Harris takes her down....  And Gabbard counters framing Harris as conservative.  And Steyer talked.  Um he has been so un-noteable that I’m like- he really made the cut over Castro?  And Yang finally talks- definitely different framing than the other candidates (he talks a lot about the technology race with China) but his comments aren’t as “hot” as some of the others.
Bernie when asked about lock him up chants had a response that people likely appreciated- that it reflected people beginning to see trump as being needed to be held accountable.  Biden’s statement on returning civility and implying that the States is built on civility is laughable.  Klobuchar, Harris, and Yang addressed paid family leave in some form.  Klobuchar really does tout herself as being fiscally responsible.  3 months paid parental leave is a small amount of time though and not based on what families need. These policies pay for themselves and it’s annoying that that’s not influencing the States more.  Yang- OK I do appreciate him raising universal income as an issue.  I am not endorsing or discrediting universal income but I do think that discussing it is has good effects regardless (e.g., discussion about what direction to go in terms of social democracy-- restore social services and/or universal income).  Harris- damn she is polished.  Steyer- OK he is saying some more progressive stuff.  Hmm, is he taking on Inslee’s position as “the climate” candidate?  Booker and Warren addressing redlining and gentrification- thumbs up.
Harris talking about how trump has damaged the reputation of the States internationally did seem to imply that the States could actually turn our reputation around with a new presidency.... yeah I don’t think so, maybe in 100 years if we were to become and actually stay a true social democracy.  Also, the  the massive powers the States was given after World War Two with all this language about the States being about freedom and democracy... wtf, a nation built on land theft and genocide and slavery that has such intense racial hierarchy, yeah never should have happened.
Booker- oh he is talking about totalitarianism world-wide.  Why am I thinking that I haven’t really heard him talk about international issues before?  I’m sure I missed this but how.
Ugh and I accidentally closed my browser window as Bernie was talking about Palestine and I missed what he said.  I’m definitely very aware of the absence of candidates discussing Palestine.  I also notice the absence of talk about Haiti, Yemen, and multiple countries South of the states.  Like yes talking about Jamal Khashoggi and China is important but I do think a focus on enduring systematic injustices within their larger historical context is largely just missing.
Harris calls democrats out for their vulturistic approach to the Black electorate.  I wish her track record if stripped of its association with her didn’t suggest that she is one of the democrats she is critiquing though.  And damn Booker takes up the issue later and brings it around to marijuana decriminalization- tight and strong, and got Biden to say he supports decriminalization.
Eh there were a few more things I was going to comment on but I didn’t do them live and don’t remember what I was gonna say (I did get up early today to do interviews).  It’s closing statements now.  I think Booker had a really (the most) powerful closing statement.  Buttigieg had a pretty good statement but not as strong as Booker.  Bernie’s statement is exactly what we expect from him.  Warren’s statements are beginning to feel a bit predictable to me too.  (Also Bernie and Warren both talking about their families coming from little and then being successful is a bit tiring... they are ignoring white privilege and giving power to the myth that with hard work you can be successful... that myth was always conditional and only applied to a few.)  Biden’s closing statement- wtf was that?  Ugh yeah I do feel that he is resting on his laurels a bit and just is not a strong candidate.  Like the fact that people are saying they think he’s the most electable candidate is laugh-able to me.  He doesn’t show leadership or have any forward thinking.  He has shown himself to be pretty bleh from his track record and just doesn’t have noteable accomplishments.  Hmm, OK debate done.  Bed time soon!

Please @ God never let me become a sour academic who sits in their office all day and talks in a voice that immediately puts people to sleep and has bad teeth and a vulturistic attitude to young blood flowing into the discipline... I just watched a video of exactly this kind of person and had a vision of myself with a saggy face and bad breath and I can’t take it 🤢 growing old fucking sucks, I don’t want it. Unless I can be like what most field archaeologists are like which is super passionate and knowledgeable and lovely; yeah fuck academia I’m gonna dig and hang out with the cool guys! (yes I’m planning the next 30 years of my life based on weird personal prejudices, don’t question it)

TL;DR
Summation of what OP said:
I love makeup, painting your face is a primal, ancient human instinct we have took part in for millenia. However, over the past several decades, vulturistic cosmetic companies have created and driven a social standard based not on cultural aesthetics, but rather generating capital.
Basically:
Makeup companies don't "make enough" by just selling you a lipstick or shadow now and then. They need to ensure your regular purchase. They need you convinced you need as many products as possible. You don't need to wash your face with 2 soaps, put on 3 moisturizers, 2 primers, a layer of paint that matches your exact skin tone ? They want you to use as much product as quickly as possible so you will buy more.
I don't know, I personally have never gotten foundation or concealer. Like I knew I was supposed to put it on, but never really cared why? Like idk putting foundation on is like ew why did I cover my whole face in stuff when like it looks the same as when there's nothing on it? Then why did I spritz it with 13.99 rose water?
Makeup industry fucked. Like idk man I want you to do what makes u happy so I ain't gonna tell anyone to stop contouring or shit like if that's really what u wanna do, but maybe like ask yourself when u started, why ? What makes you want to do it, and maybe those reasons aren't what you thought.
face makeup is evil. i don’t care. like eyeshadow can be a fun and creative thing and it’s not like anybody is going to think you genuinely have purple eyelids but face makeup that’s made to look “natural” just ends up making you think your normal skin is something to be covered up and distorts your perception of your face. the whole “it makes ppl more confident!” thing is a lie because it’s not that the makeup itself is making you feel confident it’s that it creates an association with confidence and the results of that is you end up hating your face which is the opposite of building your self-confidence.

Dealing With Principled Criticism, Toxic Nationalism and Consciousness
The idea that we can’t or shouldn’t learn from the ideas and analysis of our oppressors is utter nonsense and is usually propagated by individuals who subscribe to a narrow and toxic cultural black nationalism as opposed to revolutionary nationalism.
Malcolm talked about the mountains of books he studied while in prison and after he was released. All of them were not African scholars. I am sure that Malcolm at some point adopted and incorporated some of their analysis in his thinking and political outlook.
Dr. Amos Wilson constantly warned African people about this narrow-minded idea that they should only read African scholars. He suggested a number of books from European economists, political scientists, psychologists, sociologists and historians. I have purchased many of the books he recommended in his lectures and they have helped me to gain more clarity.
I imagine that some of the scholars that many of our scholars read and even cited in their works did not hold a high opinion of African people. Many of them were outright racists. However, some of their political, economic and social analysis was on point when it came to the systems and institutions of white domination that African people are forced to exists under.
Because a scholar is a white racist aggressor does not mean that we should disregard their sound analysis when we can use their analysis to build upon and gain important insights from. To disregard such analysis on the sole basis that a person was/is a racist is politically immature and we do so to our own detriment and to the detriment of our collective struggle.
Furthermore, there are some white scholars who are not racists and have dedicated their lives and work to helping to expose and dismantle the systems and institutions of white domination. Should we disregard them and their work just because they are white? I say no with the caveat that I think their best work would be to work to teach their own people the error and folly of their racists ways and who their real enemies are, the white elites. I think this also applies to other so-called “people of color”.
Lastly, some of y'all think that our ancestors, elders, scholars and freedom fighters are above reproach. Some of you treat them as if they are celebrities or something. You want to worship individuals instead of studying and critically analyzing their actions and/or scholarship. I deal with logical and rational ideas and actions. Nonetheless, I do realize it is alright to have a healthy admiration for our people who fought valiantly on our behalf. But when we worship these people and fail to critically analyze them, we do them and ourselves a disservice because we set ourselves up to repeat the same mistakes that have made.
For example, it is alright to acknowledge that Garvey was a capitalist while acknowledging that the context and circumstances in which Garvey was operating in made advancing a capitalist economic strategy a logical and reasonable strategy to advance at that time. It is ok to acknowledge and distinguish that Garvey was dealing with industrial capitalism and not the global finance capitalist system we are faced with today. Garvey wasn’t operating sweatshops in Sri Lanka that were destroying the quality of life of other oppressed people. Additionally, he was advancing his strategy to build the collective wealth of African people and not to line his own pockets like many of these capitalist blood suckers today. There are distinctions.
We should assess the challenges we are facing today and make a rational and logical decision with respect to capitalism and other things. And in my mind, the only logical and rational decision is to be anti-capitalist because capitalism is at a stage where it is destroying the planet and is a vulturistic system that is impoverishing the masses. I think if Garvey was alive today, it is likely he would reach the conclusion that capitalism is totally destructive for people and the planet. But we will never know.
Be rational. Be logical. Realize that our ancestors and freedom fighters are not saints or holy men or women. We don’t need them to be. Neither do we need to be. We need people who are politically principled and astute to face the challenges we are facing as a people today.
