Right People, Wrong Place Review

I want to start this review out by clarifying that I am not an army. However, I have enjoyed a few of the members’ solo releases. J-Hopes Arson was very fun. V’s stuff is nice! RM.. this new album is pretty weird and I like it. Creative direction goes hard, I understand how people get into them.

What is clear about Right People Wrong Place is that this man listens to A LOT of music. I hear the Elliot Smith, the SchoolBoy Q, the Frank and Tyler, Outkast and SO. Much. Tom Misch. This man got on that Tom Misch train and mixed it together with our boy Doom, Madlib, and maybe some Franky Gibbs. Tash Sultana? Is that you? Omg… is that… Nine Inch Nails?  60s American rock and roll and 80s Japanese experimental jazz shine through.  Him and his team listened to so much music, and then added the RICH production techniques of K-Pop in there to make a truly cool album. Good for them. 

The first song shares it’s name with the album. It acts as a bridge from whatever reality you are living in into his world. I have listened to it now like 8 times in a row to review it. It has super lux production, almost similar to Hall of Fame by Skz. There's a fun angry sample in the back. He doesn’t say much but it allows you to see the sunrise of vision he is creating. Okay. I have stockholm-syndromed myself with this song.

Nuts comes next, with that baseline that takes me into a Vulfpeck song, with Tyler vocals. Looping sounds are obviously a theme in this album, as it is trying to hypnotize you into taking this album seriously. The song switches between Korean and English, using a sexy metaphore to convince you to join his team, even with the sinister sounds creeping around the listeners neck. I don’t know the feature, but the dark voice really allows the metaphor punch. It is weird to hear someone use the 2000s alt rap rhythm with such clean production. 

Lil Simz on Domodachi does a lot of leg work of certifying RM as cool, same with Moses Sumney on Around the World in A Day. I do wish they added some texture to his vocals. It sounds so clean in comparison to the absolute dirty production. The rhythms are wild.

I think overall this album tells a cohesive story that allows for RM’s vision to really latch on to the listener. This album breaks out of Kpop into genuinely good music, filled with references, homages, and good story telling. We do not get music as considered as this in KPOP. I am going to give this album 4.8 star rating. The missed bits come from too clean vocals and how I want to see more credit given to the producers of the album. Get an older microphone, RM.

This is a world class album, and I am just a little crazed that it came from such a high powered pop star. When you make enough money for your boy band, you are allowed to do what you want on your solo ventures.

Noah, knew that he'd been spending too much time inside. He moved between the dance studio, classrooms, and his own suite on an unending cycle. Jamie had broken him out of the cycle by taking him out to lunch and it made him realize that he needed to get out and freakin' touch grass from time to time. A run. That should do the trick. He laced up his running shoes, did a quick stretch, and then took off at a heartrate raising, but not crazy pace, airpods filling his head with Vulfpeck and Earth, Wind, and Fire. It was an echo of his first weeks at the school when he found himself nearly being JB Jones' pin cushion. It was a strange kind of deja vu. "Woah, okay. Staying. Staying." He was ready for a break anyway. He pulled out his airpods and grabbed his ankles behind him to stretch his burning quads. "Hey JB. How you doin'?"

JB's mind had been racing since the trial ended, and granted that was only a few days ago, she still couldn't get it to calm down. The why's and the what if's were making her crazy and she was desperate to get out of her head. It was the first decent weather day in weeks, so she packed up her bow and made it to the archery range. It was like riding a bike. She exhaled as she lifted her finger from the release, and the arrow whistled through the air and thud into the target. She looked over as she heard footsteps approach, "stay on that side of the line unless you're looking for a new piercing."

Birds of a Feather

On our last day in Stellenbosch, we took it easy and explored the estate. After scoping out the grounds, we ate lunch outside and were visited by my cat friend. We learned that the cat is actually a male named Jesse. Chris and Michael walked by while we were finishing up and we got a chance to say goodbye.

The highlight of the day was at the Eagle Encounter Center. There, they rescue birds, rehabilitate, and then release them into the wild. The first birds we met were yellow billed kites. They were missing their tail feathers and had feathers from other birds attached to help them fly.

Next, we were introduced to the Pale Chanting Goshawks. We learned that these birds are monogamous and can die from loneliness. We also saw a South American Black Vulture.

After the first feeding, we walked around and ended up at the Secretary Birds' cage, where another feeding was just beginning. They are the national birds of SA and appear on all of their currency. One of the bird's feet was amputated but was still able to do everything from running to kicking. These birds are strong enough to take down snakes and cheetah cubs.

Last, we visited some wood owls, which we were able to pet. The birds can feel vibrations and like to dance to music so I put some Vulfpeck on for them and watched them dance along. These owls were pretty sweet and gave me a new appreciation for the species.
