In 2013, there was a flash flood on the property. Our entrance walkway was just one of the areas that was extensively damaged. This spring the area looks natural and beautiful, and is able to accommodate sudden rainstorms with little damage. Although the area has a natural look, it was designed and built by Grover Engineering and @johnscottexcavating. The step pools are both to slow the water and to create habitat for macro invertebrates and other critters that live in the stream. For the first few years after the storm no Spring Salamanders or Two-lined Salamanders were found in the lower stream (probably due to all the sedimentation that washed into the stream). Spring Salamanders were found about three years after the flood and were found again this year by @uvm_rsenr Field Herpetology class. Instead of rebuilding a dirt walkway @timberandstonevt built this bridge which allows for higher water to flow underneath (if needed). It also provides a great place for Eastern Phoebes to nest. Thank you again @vtartscouncil for helping fund the building of this bridge. The plants on the banks are primarily native plants and almost entirely planted and maintained by volunteers. The plants have been chosen for both erosion control and for pollinators. With support from @btvcityarts @vtartscouncil @neaarts @vermontfolklife and @cvoeo_vt 's fair housing program, Voices of Home shares the stories of folks benefiting from affordable housing, and the often perilous journey they took to get the housing they need.
