Note: this is mostly in the US. Given that it's the time of year where some seasonal workers may be beginning to be termed or hired, as well a number of young people graduating from school and entering the workforce, I figure it's a good time to share this.

Okay hear me out:

a Michael x Rayner AU inspired by the VOY ep. "Workforce"!

On the hunt for the Progenitor technology, the Discovery falls into another trap set up by Moll and L'ak where they use a device that messes with people's memories.

Michael and Rayner get abducted and end up at a salvage yard controlled by the Emerald Chain with false memories implanted into their heads (like the Voyager crew in the episode). Despite not remembering each other, they feel attracted to each other and start to hook up.

When the Discovery rescues them eventually and they regain their real memories, things are tense and awkward between them on the bridge because of what happened between them and even more because the feelings they have developed for each other just won’t go away again...

Oh, all the delicious unresolved tension with them trying to act professional and pretend it didn't mean anything and will certainly not happen again 😏

Update after watching Voyager s7 e17 The Workforce Part II:

Okay I legitimately was pulling for Tom and B'Elanna in this episode in a way I never have. Their relationship seems to have actually progessed in this season in a way it never did in the previous ones.

Seeing Tom try to care for B'Elanna when they'd both lost all their memories, promising to be a good friend, just because he wanted to care for her? That really meant something and it obviously meant a lot to B'Elanna too.

Their romance plot wasn't really what I wanted from Voyager, and it wasn't even what I wanted it to be as a romantic plot, but I am glad the writers found a way to show that they have changed each other.

I just saw Star Trek Voyager s7 e11 Lineage.... such a stellar B'Elanna episode that made me feel like crying. Roxann was amazing as always and I found myself rooting for B'Elanna and Tom for the first time ever (I still have reservations about Tom and his manipulative behaviour grrr but he _is_ good as malewife) but yeah mostly rooting for my girl to move past all the self hate, accept herself for who she is, not try to be someone anyone else wants (even Tom).
