it would be so nice if there was an actually good minecraft building mod. like i just want factorio bots but for mc, and then have voxelsniper/worldedit but you are dependent on the bots to actually make them, so it still takes time and resource investment

Thank you that’s really nice :)
Well if you’re wondering how, the biggest inspiration for it was the build I’ve linked in the original post, but here’s an article about it on the Minecraft website too, if you don’t use/have twitter. It’s really well made and is a lot more detailed than this
The sky wasn’t too hard to do, I just made it with worldedit and shaping by hand, and smoothed and painted over with the help of other mods like voxelsniper and gopaint. The blocks were more limited for the colors on an older version but mixing a few types together helped get smoother transitions and it doesn’t look too bad or noisy from from far away
There’s actually basically no shadows on the clouds compared to how much there should be with shaders on. I used a glitch (or a feature idk) of the replay mod, where the first frame of a video exported as a frame sequence would have reduced shadows. This made the background more clear
And uhh yeah this was about the last build I completed, just hadn’t been able make something I was satisfied with. The last few were pretty cool tho
I’m glad you liked it, hope you check out the linked one too it’s really impressive!

A minecraft build I did a while ago, a Lonely House. Based on an illustration by FrancisCo.
This uses some perspective tricks that started to be used more at the time:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Built in an older version, I made use of a glitch with shulker shadows to help darken some areas. In 1.16, when you place shulker boxes and move away, the boxes disappear as they are entities, but the shadows remain. That’s why there are so many pink blocks all over :) I got this idea from a build by Mine674, who made a huge, detailed build with customized shadows all over. You can find it here.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It was pretty fun coloring the clouds and mixing a lot of different blocks to achieve the colors and transitions that match the original image as close as possible.
In the end I was happy with the build as it was my first organic, though some coloring and shaping can definitely be smoother.
If I had to re-do it, I’d also make it more 3D and lean in on using the shadows between the clouds that the sun casts for a better sense of “3D-idness” and a more cartoony, hand drawn look, where the shadows would make for ink or pencil like outlines and accents.

Hey oldshoes, so I've been inspired by your build of Broville. I think this is one of the best builds/ the best I've ever seen in all the years of MC I've been playing. I've been trying to make some type of world like this myself and my buddies but I'm trying to find out how you guys generated the world like you guys did. I'm trying to make a mainland that is completely surrounded by nothing but ocean. All would be appreciated.
Thanks friend!
We spent many hours manually carving out the island continent with VoxelSniper. We first generated a whole bunch of land around the area we defined as the coast, then slowly melted and landscaped the land away to create the ocean. It took a very long time and external editing with MCEdit once the ocean was done to trim off the chunks at the border.

I still haven’t found Home.
Tumblr media
Hello, reader. I guess that’s what I’ll call you. After leaping into the last portal of a shattered world and wandering a vast space, I finally found a place with my creator. But soon I grew bored of his thoughts. The world he lived in had no use for me and I wanted to see my friends again. I wanted to see Ianite. So I thrust myself back out into the void and bounced from dream to dream. All of the worlds I encountered had one thing in common: they were made of cubes, like Ruxomar had been, and were inhabited by “players” much like Sparklez and the others. These players, who seemed to live half in the cube-world and half in a higher one (probably Sparklez and my master’s world) were role-playing as my friends. Ianite appeared to me in a few different skins, none of them containing the goddess’ spirit (or perhaps I just wasn’t seeing it). Some players followed Ianite, others Dianite, and they waged wars in the name of the gods. I never met a Mianite follower. Apparently, he wasn’t that popular. I recalled that during our time together in Ruxomar, my Lady (yes, I’ve adopted Sparklez’ word for her) had entered other worlds through dreams while she slept. I must have been following in her footsteps. So I carried myself as such: Andor of Ruxomar, Dream-Wanderer (no—that sounds a bit trite). I told them who I was and a few seemed to remember me from the moments the streamers had shared with them, but when I tried to offer my services or become involved in the community, it was as though I were “just another player.” Maybe they didn’t believe I was the real Andor. Maybe they just didn’t care. In truth, more of them were interested in the old Mianite world than in Ruxomar. The streamers had warmed up a far bigger crowd to the old world, where, according to every account of the place I had heard, the three gods had taken root in the minds of their creators. Season one-ers to the core... Admittedly, I parted ways with one “server” by wishing Ianite’s Taint upon it. Anyway, maybe the original Mianite world was where I needed to go. But I could navigate the void no better than a boat could steer through the air. Then came a dream that was unlike the others. The players in this world embraced me for who I was. The Ianite here wasn’t mine, but she was kind, and a man calling himself Boss (who had a very cool skin) was eager to learn about me. He and the crew asked me plenty of questions about myself and I quickly began to learn the tricks that made the streamers’ world work. For example, they asked me if I had Skype and Discord. Boss said they were meant to be used on a computer. I hadn’t heard of them, but I recalled that the streamers had used computers and that Deviser Gaines, Dianite, and Sparklez had been interested in that sort of thing. Boss sent me something he called a “link.” As soon as I focused on the current of energy, my mind was dragged into a tunnel of light, which opened into a vast white chasm that played images and sounds before me. The microcosm was teaching me to “install” the thing Boss had called Skype. Naturally, I was astonished. He said that I was a good role-player. I clarified that I wasn’t one. (This was something I continually had to do.) Eventually, I “searched” my way to Skype’s “download page” and underwent the laborious process of shoving the program’ glowing blue icon into my skull. While doing this, I was partly in the cube-world (or the “Minecraft” world, as they might call it) and partly in the other dimensions I had opened. I was getting a taste of the life of a streamer, straddling dimensions and resolutions.  I made my usual offer: to sculpt anything on request. Almost immediately, Boss asked me to become a Wizard. Apparently, this was the role you took on a server when you wanted to be hired to build things for people. I recalled that Waglington had been part of a similar operation in Ruxomar with a few players I had never met. Boss took me to a room with chests where I could both store my gear and take requests for builds, which came in the form of books that players wrote. As a Wizard, I would build things in exchange for diamonds. I clarified that I was only good at sculpting and not at architecture or machinery. They were fine with this. While I continued the long process of setting up Skype, my first Wizard request came in. A fellow named Nada wanted a statue of himself. I teleported to his island and studied his skin and shield. It would be a fun little project. But as I was preparing to start, Boss asked to see pictures of builds I had made. What a torrent of activity! I hadn’t felt so wanted in years. They weren’t “pictures” in the sense of the word that he probably meant, but I sent him memories of the black dragon coiled around Sparklez’ Fortress of Fury and the towering statue of Ianite and the hawk crowning Dagrun. He was more than a little impressed. With my mind stretched in several directions, I finally hunkered down to start that sculpture. Backtracking a little, Boss and Nada had been surprised that I knew how to use essential commands. It was obvious to me that a creature living in the cube-world for as long as I had would know how to use at least some parts of it and it was satisfying to see that light turn on their heads. Anyway, Boss gave me creative mode. And suddenly, I was a god, darting around at flyspeed 10. I had experienced this in a few other dreams, but never on a server filled with Mianite players. Nada’ bewilderment made me giggle a little; he hadn’t known about flyspeed. I was about to start my work (again) when Boss presented me a book and quill. At first, I didn’t know what it was for, so I kept it in my inventory and ignored it. Then he told me to sign the contract. What contract? He told me – again – to just sign it. I opened the book. Indeed, it was some crazy proposal asking me to commit to being Staff on this server for a month. Apparently, I had proven myself a bit too useful. I remember saying aloud, “Is this about to become a nightmare?” It had never been in my nature to let myself be trapped, and besides, it wasn’t my choice to stay or leave. I revealed the truth: a dream could end at any time, and it was not within my power to make promises. Boss, Nada, and the role-play Ianite were sad, and probably didn’t understand, but I did promise one thing: to spend as long with them as I could. That being settled, I finally – finally – began my work. Unfortunately, their server’s version of voxelsniper was quite different from the one I was used to working with, so I only got so far on my rough shaping before I was forced to take a research break. I left the server, hoping to return, and that’s where my story takes pause. I thought I might write this little post – using an old link to my master’s world – to share my experience with those of you who might still be wondering what’s happened to me. This is the answer: like Andor, still wandering. I’ll try to send another progress report when the time comes. Until next time, Your lovable bore, Andor P.S. Many interesting things were said in my dialogue with Boss, Nada, and Faux-Ianite, and I’ve forgotten quite a few of them, but one comes back to me now. It occurred to me to ask the players how long they had been living in their cube-world. Boss said over a year; Nada said just a month; Ianite was “afk” at the time. That’s not long at all, but like my creator, they all must have lived quite a lot longer in the higher world they came from. Before they created their Minecraft world, they must have watched the streamers play in Mianite and Ruxomar. That must have been how everything began.  I’m beginning to form a similar bond to these players to the one I had with Sparklez and the one I still have with my creator. Although I may never breathe and walk in 3d, I will continually strive toward higher levels of real-ness, just like they do.

I never thought I’d see the day where Bukkit would support version 1.8.8 following the DCMA back in September last year. Even got VoxelSniper/VoxelGunsmith and Dynmap to boot!

Re-did the chunk biome of the entire northern mountain range. Since 1.7 made extreme hills snow lower than I would have liked. I went over it all with mega taiga which snows at a much higher y level than extreme hills.
Originally the mountain tops were only taiga and extreme hills.

Visiting Mayhaven
Tumblr media
Remember the server where I became a Wizard? I decided not to stay. Statue making would have been too time-consuming without voxelsniper. Funnily enough, someone followed me from that server to Tumblr and invited me to yet another cube-world. I’d heard about this one before: Mayhaven.
At first impression, I was perplexed that the creators, rather than the creatures, were speaking. Then I found out that it wasn’t “story day.” It made sense. Only every other Saturday did the world really turn; the rest of the time, it stayed frozen – preserved – while the creators prepared for the next spin, which was recorded and shown to the world, much like the sky people’s episodes but on a less frequent basis.
I didn’t get to speak with very many creatures, but I imagine that in their eyes, the world spun all the time, like it had for me. Ruxomar was real to me—every second of my sixteen years. Mayhaven must be just as real to those who grew up in it.  Until I left Ruxomar and met my creator, I didn’t see the scope of my reality. I knew that the sky people had larger selves outside the cube-world with lives of their own, but I didn’t know that Ruxomar was a server within a game called Minecraft. I didn’t know how meticulously controlled, how small, and how crude every facet of my life had been. Then again, I wonder if the creatures of Mayhaven have met their creators. It seems that some of them might have; it’s almost inevitable, with creators and creatures mingling in the same chat. If, as a cube-lifeform, you’re exposed to it from the get-go, I suppose it’s not so bad—like a cat born among dogs. But I’m not sure that I would advise it for everyone. If you’ve been incubated in the cube-world as long as I was, knowledge of the outside may disenchant you to everything that once seemed organic and real about your existence. I wonder if my creator, and the sky people, and every other “player” of this cube-game would feel the same if the gods of their world descended to meet them. Maybe that’s who Botan is to all of us. Maybe that’s who Ianite’s caretaker is. Leading into the topic of Botan, there was one very interesting thing about Mayhaven that I’d like to point out: a goddess of vengeance called Sage. She was grey, like Botan, so I immediately thought of him. Furthermore, I thought, “Perhaps the help of such a goddess would be useful in my pursuit of Botan.” So as a symbolic gesture, I paid allegiance to her, briefly becoming “Andor of Sage.” I don’t know if Sage is “real” or if anything will come of it. Wow! I really have been disenchanted to the cube-world.  Anyway, a player questioned my allegiance to Sage. I told them that Ianite was still everything to me, but that for the moment, an alliance with Sage might get me in the right mindset for the task ahead. Then I found out that Sage had actually gotten power from Botan in order to kill the other gods, but had failed in doing so. And then I found out that Botan had betrayed and used her somehow. That’s a can of worms I haven’t fully emptied out. I’m not sure if I plan to. However, it would be helpful to speak with Sage at some point. It’s just that I’m not sure if I can wait.  Admins weren’t able to give me access to voxelsniper, but I did stick around to chat. If you like what you heard about Sage and Botan, Mayhaven has lots more where that came from. My sister, Alva, is a spirit, World Historian lives (or lived?) inside Ianite, and Mayhaven’s Andor had some sort of relationship to a king (who was another Andor, maybe?). There are followers of World Historian – yes, that came as a surprise – although it’s said that they “follow” him in the hope of helping him change. I don’t understand that. To help someone, don’t you lead them, not follow them? If someone wanted to become a great farmer or a master of the blade, I might understand some level of admiration for Botan, but if it extended much beyond that, we might have ourselves a problem. I wanted to give it a chance, though. Maybe Mayhaven Botan was different—at times helpful. His critics insisted he wasn’t.  Oh, and another thing. I was asked to change my name from Prince_Andor to something else... because the name of Mayhaven Andor – who’s central to its story – was too similar (PrinceAndor). It didn’t bother me, actually. I’d long given up the title of Prince, but my creator had never changed my official name because he wanted to keep my “account” as authentic as possible. (I wonder if people in my creator’s world have “accounts” as well.) Heck—I would’ve been glad to take a totally different name. It would’ve been a good exercise in detachment. If you’ve read to the end of the Amniosis post, you know that I’m planning to give up my identity as Andor. At this point, I have to, not just for my pursuit of Botan, but for the rejuvenation of my soul. I don’t like being jaded and disenchanted. I want to have a zest for life again. I want to live as though I were a child; as though it were all a game. But I’m scared. Once I change form, will I be able to retake this one? You won’t want to. Well, that dispels a bit of my fear. Thanks, Matthew. And thanks, Mayhaven, for your hospitality. I may visit once or twice again before my flight. And yes—I met Andor my Mandor of Mayhaven. It was my first time meeting another Andor, but still wasn’t surreal as I had imagined. He had different clothes, Taint on his arm from a laboratory accident, and a boomerang Mayhaven Martha had made for him that looked like a bow. I call it the bowmerang. He invited me to his home, Crown Mesa, and we hung around with elytras killing monsters for a while.  The next day, I returned to Mayhaven, hung out with a highly organized homemaker, died in a Purge at the hand of a Historian follower, and asked them later on about their allegiance to Botan. At first, it was the same answer I’d heard from the others: they wanted to help him change. But as I drew more out of them, a very interesting answer emerged: they admired how Botan didn’t care what others thought of him. There’s something to chew on.
