#votinghistory #themoreyouknow Thomas Mundy Peterson is known as being the 1st black voter after the the 15th Ammendment was passed. If you live in NJ and think "that name sounds familiar", he lived in Perth Amboy where a school is named after him. In 1998 NJ dedicated March 31st as "Thomas Mundy Peterson Day". The medal on the second slide was presented to him by by his community in recognition for his historic vote. The medal is currently at Xavier University of Louisiana. Orange County's Regional History Center says Central Florida is home to this country's largest incident of voting day violence, ever: The Ocoee Massacre. It's history often untold, and often unknown, but now, a new bill requires all Florida students to learn about it, and that new curriculum hits classrooms this upcoming school year. "My ethnic background consists of African American and Native American," said Amber Saunders, an Orange County mother of three. "A lot of the tribal and cultural people pass their history down through oral storytelling, through dancing." Saunders' youngest is now starting the eighth grade. Given her native culture's deep reliance on and respect for history, she is excited about an addition to her daughter's school district's history curriculum, history she only knew little about. "I have heard of the Ocoee Massacre. I heard about it in passing and didn't really understand it and know the specifics of it," Saunders said. The Ocoee Massacre happened on November 2, 1920. Black landowner July Perry was lynched as an armed mob attacked Black neighborhoods, killing about 50 residents, burning homes and churches. Others were driven out of Ocoee, all because they wanted to vote. It's a tragedy all Floridians should know about, but don't. But that's about to change, thanks to Florida House Bill 1213, a bill that, in part, requires all Florida students learn about the Ocoee Massacre. —Summer Knowles, Wesh 2 News Follow @inkagnedotv . . . . . #blackdollarsmatter #blackempowerment #blackhistorymonth #blackowned #blackwallstreet #fuckracism #georgefloyd #handsupdontshoot #neverforget #orlandosentinel #powertothepeople #raceriots #reparations #rosewood #standyourground #theblackcode #thisisamerica #tulsaracemassacre #votingrights #chickenscominghometoroost #ocoeemassacre #sundowntowns #standandbecounted #blackcities #julyperry #senatorbracy #ocoee100years #creatingdestiny #votinghistory #blackmassacres https://www.instagram.com/p/CRb93GEJK0H/?utm_medium=tumblr

The #DogDays of summer are in full force this week, but this red, white, and blue vest—designed for a canine companion—should motivate us to brave the summer heat. 🐕 Sponsored by the Gaines Dog Foods Company in the 1950s, this vest tried to inspire Americans to vote with two different appeals: "Be Freedom's Watch-Dog...Get set for Election Day" and "Vote as you Dog-Gone-Please—but Vote Nov. 6." Would those messages (and perhaps a wagging tail) have convinced you to go to the polls? 🗳️ Having trouble picturing the vest in action? Flip through the images above to see it on display in our exhibition, "American Democracy: A Great Leap of Faith." A canine mannequin—nicknamed "Ballot the Beagle" by our curators—shows what the vest might have looked like with a dog to model it. 🐶 #MondayMotivation #AmericanDemocracy #VotingHistory #PoliticalHistory #DogHistory #AmericanHistory #Civics #CivicEngagement #ExhibitionDesign #DogDays #DogDaysOfSummer https://ift.tt/2KvWsRs
