The Date (part two)
Part one
________________________________________
Strong hands glided elegantly over computer controls as Vorik returned to his Station. The young Vulcan was on break, and was planning on joining the others in the mess hall as he had not eaten yet, however determined as he was he decided to work out a view details before he ended his shift. Typical Vulcan perfectionism, as some of his co-workers liked to say.
After a view minutes, he put down his tricorder and sighed. Finally satisfied with his work, he gave a quick look around, checking how many people were currently in engineering. And he found himself seeking the face of a certain fellow ensign he saw yesterday.
Ensign (L/n)
You were not very close, in fact Vorik barely knew you. Only really interacting with you while in engineering, and even then you didn't interact much. Not surprising, he thought, given your shy nature. He'd overheard the other crew members talking about it on occasion, mentioning how irritating your nervousness and constant fidgeting was to them, whilst others expressed their concern at your scarce social life. And while Vorik tended not to get involved with the personal life of his fellow crew members, he had to admit- he was curious about your strange behavior as well. Especially your behavior toward him.
For it wasn't uncommon to find you looking at him from across the room, just to immediately avoid your gaze once he took notice. In fact, it seemed like you were trying to avoid him all together. Whenever you had to work together, or he was attempting to discuss something with you, you always kept your answers short, walking away quickly once he released you, so to speak.
And maybe, had you been Vulcan, Vorik wouldn't have batted an eye. But since you were not, he found himself wondering if maybe he had done something to warrant your strange behavior toward him. Perhaps, he thought, he should ask you about it. See if there was any way to make you feel more comfortable working with him.
His thoughts interrupted by the low growl of his empty stomach, the ensign聽 made his way over to the turbolift, leaving someone else to take his station.
The volume in the mess hall was low today. It had been like this the entire week, as well as the week before. Like most vulcans, Vorik appreciated the quiet, though unfortunately it came with a rather unwelcome side effect.
The lack of laughter and loud chatter made it much harder to forget the growing loneliness that came from being stranded away from home. Perhaps the conversation with you might make the silence a little more bearable, he thought.
Stepping further into the room, Vorik's eyes automatically scanned for your (h/c) hair, finding you almost instantly. You were sitting alone on a table in the far right corner, your gaze fixated on the stars as you held onto the cup in your hands. You looked sad. Perhaps you were lonely as well, he wondered as he made his way over to you.
"Good day, Ensign. May I sit with you?" he asked, noticing how your semi-relaxed body immediately stiffened up once you noticed him.
"I- well, y-yeah. Of course." You nodded, gesturing to the seat across from you. He took it, putting his hands on the table in front of him.
He eyed you for a bit. The other crew members seemed to be correct in saying that you fidgeted a lot. As you immediately started shifting in your seat, hands playing with the fabric of your yellow uniform sleeves. He also noticed that there was no food tray in front of you.
"Are you not hungry?" he tilted his head.
"Wha- oh. Yeah, no, not really." you hesitated for a moment "You?"
"Perhaps later." he nodded, thinking carefully about what he was gonna say next.
"Ensign, may I ask you a personal question?"
"Of course." You said gently, eyes wandering over his features, a look of worry on your face.
"Do you find it difficult to work with me?"
He watched as your eyes widened at the question, a blush now evident on your cheeks. He was not sure how to take your expression.
"Not at all!" you exclaimed, quieting down once you saw other people looking at you "In fact I believe you're amazing at your work, a-and at working with others. You have always been a great help to me, anyways. And I believe if you asked other members of the crew they would tell you the same th-"
"I was referring to you specifically." he gently cut you off. "I have come to notice your growing nervousness whenever I am near you. The way you play with your uniform and how you seem to be avoiding direct eye contact, all indications that you're not comfortable around me."
Vorik watched as you pressed your lips together and stared down at your lap, looking like a scolded child. It was cute, he thought.
"Is...my assumption incorrect?" he quired after he didn't receive an answer.
You looked back at him, contemplating your answer, before you sighed and looked away again.
"Not... entirely"
"I don't have anything against you, I-I actually...quite like you" you coughed, causing Vorik to raise an eyebrow.
"I suppose it's...because of that, that I get so nervous around you. Y-you know, being around someone you look up to and all that" you admitted, looking embarrassed, your face now a darker shade of red "I... apologize if I somehow made working with me difficult for you"
He was quiet for a moment.
Aside from your social struggles, your performance had been short of excellent, never coming too late or missing a shift and volunteering for work that no one else wanted to do. You were almost irreplaceable when it came to engineering. It made him wonder why you of all people would look up to him, considering that you were the same rank and you were easily as good as him, if not better.
"On the contrary. I enjoy working with you and find your precision and your ability to focus on the things at hand to be quite admirable, even refreshing." he watched as your face seemed to light up, a small smile tugging on the corners of your mouth.
"I'm glad to hear that." you gave him a genuine smile, before taking another sip of whatever you were drinking. Vorik watched you, eyes taking in your features like he'd never seen them before. He still had not eaten yet, however food didn't seem to cross his mind in this moment. He cleared his throat as you saw him staring.
"Perhaps, if we had the chance to get to know each other better you would not be as...nervous around me anymore. My quarters, 0600 hours?" he raised his eyebrows, already half expecting you to decline his offer, yet still hopeful that you wouldn't.
You blinked a few times, before looking at him with wide eyes. "I- yes, gladly" you stuttered. Surprised, but pleased by your answer, Vorik nodded and stood up. He left the mess hall, making his way to his quarters, something of a smile dangerously close to appearing on his face.

Part 1
Reader is gender-neutral.
The word 'akward' didn't do you justice.
Everyone who saw you could tell from a ten mile radius that you were a nervous wreck, as much as you attempted at hiding it. People were...never really your strong suit. You had difficulty relating to others, and never seemed to find the right words at the right time. This is why you loved your work in engineering.
It wasn't very word heavy, any conversations being mainly work-related. Rarely did you have to talk about your personal life, stammering as you struggled to think of anything interesting to talk about.
It was nice. And for the most part, you were content with the way things were going for you. Sure you still struggled socially, but you had adjusted to your life aboard Voyager and to be really honest;聽 you even preferred it over your life back on earth. It was a small crew, small enough for you to know most of them by name, and small enough for you to not get overwhelmed whenever you went to the mess hall. And still it was never boring as everyday you seemed to cross a different anomaly or a new alien species or something else to investigate.
Another thing that kept you from getting bored though, was a certain ensign that you had met the first few days into the delta quadrant. You had been assigned to work together and since that day you simply couldn't get his face out of your head. His face, his voice, his eyes. Knowing he was a telepath, you were almost worried that someday he'd read your mind and be startled by how often he had crossed it.
You sighed, brushing your hair out of your face as you took a look around you. You were in engineering, and just finished with your current shift. It was quiet as always, the only sounds coming from people engaging in quiet conversation and buttons being pressed. And, of course, the low humming of the warp core.
Content with your work, you picked up a padd with a book you were going to read and turned your heel, ready to go to the mess hall. There was only one thing you hadn't predicted, and that was to come face to face with the very person you'd been daydreaming about your entire shift. The tall, compared to you at least, soft-eyed Vulcan with the deep voice that send red rushing to your cheeks whenever you heard it.
You didn't mean to stare. But it was only natural seeing how pretty he looked from the side, conversing with a fellow ensign about ways to work even more efficiently. And how pretty his brown eyes looked as they caught your own. And how not-pretty you must've looked turning your blushing head the other way and quickly strutting to the Turbolift to get out of this embarrassing situation.
"Great, Y/n, you once again managed to act like a total idiot. And in front of Vorik, no less." You muttered to yourself once the Turbolift doors had closed, quietly hoping that he had simply been looking at something behind you. Shaking your head, you tried your best to delete the encounter from your mind, and concentrated on the task at hand; Surviving your trip to the mess hall.
It wasn't really that overwhelming, actually. At least this time it wasn't. Once the doors of the Turbolift opened, you were greeted only by quiet conversation and a few silent giggles here and there. And you understood why once you stepped out and only saw a handful of people were there. Neelix must've been working on something awful for it to be this quiet here.
Trying to find out whether or not your theory was correct, you turned to face the cheerful Talaxian, who was stirring some sort of thick pink soup, occasionally taking the spoon up to his mouth to test it before adding yet another ingredient. And even though it didn't look too bad, the smell it was giving off was enough to make your stomach churn.
You put on your best 'Im totally not concerned by what you're cooking' smile, and greeted him.
"Hello, Neelix. Something new on the menu today?" you said, shifting akwardly in your place as you didn't get an answer right away.
He must've not noticed you standing there before, but once he did, he put the spoon down and put on the biggest smile he could muster. "Ensign Y/N!" he greeted "It's great to see you! Ah- I'm trying a new recipe I found... ehm, well. I didn't really find it I just made it up. But I'm confident that it'll taste great! Would you like to try?"
His stammering and the way he said everything in such an optimistic tone made you smile in earnest, and you took another look down at the strange meal he was preparing. 'If it'll make him happy' you thought, already knowing you were gonna regret this decision.
"Y-yeah, absolutely. I'd love to." you stutter.
Given that Neelix was the morale officer, and that your bad social skills had somewhat become well known amongst the crew, it was no wonder why he was always quick to conversation with you. Always trying to get you to open up a bit more, to crack your not-so-hard shell and get to know the 'real you'. Whatever that meant.
The Talaxian's eyes lit up with joy as he nodded and quickly grabbed you a bowl, and filled it to the brim with the strange soup which had more of a jelly consistency now that you saw him pour it in. You tried your best not to visibly cringe at the sight as you took the bowl from him, and sat down on a quiet table in the corner of the room.
The window seat in the corner right table. Even though the mess hall belonged to everyone, one could almost call that seat reserved for you as you would always sit in that exact same place. You found comfort in this little routine, and no one else seemed to use this seat anyway.
You looked at the stars and sighed, resting your head on your hand, eating a spoonful of whatever Neelix had mixed together, too enamored with the way the stars were flying by to even notice the bad taste of it.聽 Though soon this peaceful moment got interrupted as more and more people entered the mess hall, apparently not so appaled by the smell of their meals after all.
And like a statue you stiffened up, suddenly becoming nervous as you watched the mess hall slowly being filled. People now chatting loudly, their laughter making it almost impossible to think. Though somehow you still wished you could share it with them.
You quickly finished your jelly-soup, standing up to return your empty bowl to Neelix. Your steps small but quick as you walked between people. You suppose it was no surprise that you bumped into someone like this, not looking at your surroundings like you should.
"Ah- I'm very sorry!" you yelped, careful not to let your bowl fall to the ground.
"Are you alright?" you heard a familiar voice ask as a hand rested on your shoulder, and your head quickly snapped up to look at who you bumped into.
It was him. You mentally facepalmed. Of course it was him! All the people on the ship and the one person you had to bump into was the one you had a crush on.
"I'm, well, I- uhm...yes. I'm fine. Thanks." you nodded, practically yelling the words as you bolted past the confused Vulcan. This was the second time you'd embarrassed yourself today. And you really hoped that there wouldn't be a third.
Though many things had changed about your life since your mission in the alpha quadrant, the fact that you were a night owl wasn't one of them. You couldn't help it. Not when there was so much to think about, so many things you wanted to write in your personal logs, so many things you wanted to read up on. Plus, in space there was no night or day anyways, so it didn't matter, right?
Laying back on your bed, you finished your personal log of today, leaving out your encounters with Vorik, as you wanted to simply forget them. You looked at the ceiling, deciding whether or not you should sleep the next three hours or do something else.
You had thought about accessing Vorik's personell files, though you ended up not doing it, as you feared he might consider it a breach of privacy. After all, you don't just look up someone's personal data without a reason, and you weren't in the mood to confess your love to him right now. Not yet, anyways.
You sighed, rubbing your eyes as you put away your padd and turned around to let yourself drift off to sleep. Tomorrow was another day. One that'd hopefully go by just a little smoother.
