In a world where positive role models are crucial for the development of young individuals, male mentors play a pivotal role in shaping the lives of the next generation. At Big Brothers Big Sisters of Utah, we firmly believe in the transformative power of mentorship, and we understand the incredible impact that male mentors have on the lives of youth. In this article, we will explore the significance of male mentors in the lives of mentees and highlight the volunteering opportunities in Utah for those who wish to make a difference in a child's life.
The Importance of Male Mentors
Male mentors bring unique perspectives and experiences to the mentoring relationship, creating a valuable and supportive bond with their mentees. For many young individuals, having a positive male role model can make all the difference in their personal and academic growth. Here are some ways male mentors empower youth for success:
1. Building Self-Confidence: Male mentors provide unwavering support and encouragement, helping their mentees develop self-confidence and a positive self-image. Through constructive feedback and praise, they instill a sense of belief in the mentees' abilities and potential.
2. Teaching Life Skills: From learning how to communicate effectively to developing problem-solving skills, male mentors equip their mentees with valuable life skills that are essential for personal and professional growth.
3. Navigating Challenges: Life is filled with ups and downs, and male mentors offer a guiding hand during difficult times. They help their mentees navigate through challenges, empowering them to overcome obstacles with resilience and determination.
4. Setting and Achieving Goals: Male mentors work with their mentees to set achievable goals and create a roadmap for success. They celebrate milestones together, fostering a sense of accomplishment and motivation.
5. Encouraging Educational Excellence: Education is the key to a brighter future. Male mentors emphasize the importance of education, inspiring their mentees to excel academically and pursue their dreams.

Exactly 100 years ago, President Warren Gamaliel Harding escaped the sweltering summer weather and increasingly dark political climate of Washington, D.C. to embark upon a lengthy cross-country trip through parts of the American West still relatively unaccustomed to frequent visits by the nation’s Chief Executive. Billed as a “Voyage of Understanding”, Harding’s trip was seen as a prelude to his potential campaign for re-election the following year, and an opportunity to put some literal and figurative distance between the President and the rumors of rampant corruption swirling around some of Harding’s friends and closest aides from Ohio, as well as several Cabinet members — rumors eventually proven to be true, resulting in indictments, convictions, prison sentences, and even suicides. As President Harding prepared for his Western tour, he could feel the heat as the scandals plaguing his Administration began to reach a boiling point. Speaking privately to the famous journalist and editor William Allen White, Harding said of the Presidency, “My God, this is a hell of a job! I have no trouble with my enemies…But my damn friends, they’re the ones that keep me walking the floor nights.”
Harding’s planned 15,000-mile Voyage of Understanding began on June 20, 1923. Traveling aboard the private Pullman railroad car Superb, the 57-year-old President left Washington, D.C. accompanied by First Lady Florence Harding, Speaker of the House of Representatives Frederick H. Gillett, new Interior Secretary Hubert Work, and a large retinue of aides, friends and their families, doctors, Secret Service agents, and members of the press. Work had become Secretary of the Interior a few months earlier when the previous Secretary, Albert B. Fall, became the “fall guy” for the Teapot Dome scandal. For his role in the scandal, Fall was later convicted of accepting bribes — the first former Cabinet member in American history to serve time in prison for crimes committed while in office. At later points along the journey, Harding’s party was also joined by Secretary of Agriculture Henry C. Wallace (father of future Vice President Henry A. Wallace) and Secretary of Commerce (and future President) Herbert Hoover.
Tumblr media
The last week of June 1923 was spent traveling through the Mountain West — Colorado, Wyoming, Utah, Idaho, Montana, and Yellowstone National Park. The beginning of July saw the Presidential party in the Northwest and celebrating Independence Day in Portland, Oregon before boarding the USS Henderson in Tacoma, Washington on July 5, 1923 to sail to Alaska. One of the expected highlights of the Voyage of Understanding was the northernmost  leg of the trip, as Harding became the first incumbent President of the United States to visit Alaska and Canada. The Territory of Alaska had been purchased for the United States by Secretary of State William Seward in 1867 when Warren G. Harding was two years old, and at the time of Harding’s visit, Alaska was still 35 years from being admitted to the Union as the 49th state. But the President spent nearly the entire month of July traveling through the state, mixing public appearances with private recreation and sightseeing. On July 15, 1923, Harding hammered a golden spike in Nenana, Alaska to officially complete the Alaska Railroad. And ten days later, the President crossed into Canada, fishing on the Campbell River in British Columbia on July 25th and then making an official visit the following day in Vancouver, where he was greeted by one of the largest crowds of his voyage — estimated at over 40,000 people — and where he also squeezed in a round of golf at the exclusive Shaughnessy Golf Club.
Tumblr media
The President returned to American soil on July 27th, arriving in Seattle and making several speeches in a busy six-hour period — first to Camp Fire Girls at Volunteer Park, then to nearly 30,000 Boy Scouts at Woodland Park, and finishing the day addressing over 30,000 people at what is now Husky Stadium at the University of Washington where he predicted statehood for Alaska, where he had spent most of the month. After making a brief appearance that evening at the Seattle Press Club, Harding boarded his train that night to travel to Portland, Oregon.
Tumblr media
But something was not right. The President seemed to be exhausted, perhaps from the grueling trip through geography much wilder than Harding’s native Ohio or swampy Washington, D.C. Despite his exciting journey through Alaska and the energetic welcome provided by the Canadian people, Harding was clearly wiped out by the time he reached British Columbia. The President did head to the country club while in Vancouver, but he was so tired that after six holes of golf his foursome skipped directly to the eighteenth hole, seemingly completing the round without tipping off the press that Harding couldn’t play the entire course.
From the White House, nine days before embarking upon his Voyage of Understanding, Harding wrote a quick note to Solicitor General James M. Beck who had wished the President a safe journey on his upcoming trip. Thanking Beck, Harding wrote, “I shall try to remember not to overdo (it) in crossing the continent.” And, on June 14, 1923, six days before leaving, President Harding wrote a short letter to a young girl from Hartford, Connecticut named Vivian Little, who had recently sent the President a four-leaf clover as a good luck charm. “Thank you so much for the four-leaf clover which you were so good as to press and send to me,” the President wrote. “I hope it will bring me good luck and that it will bring you still more of the same.”
Tumblr media
However, any luck that President Warren G. Harding still had seemed to be running out. Ill and exhausted after leaving Vancouver, Harding tried to rest aboard the USS Henderson as it sailed to Seattle in the early morning hours of July 27. At some point around 3 AM, Harding and the other passengers aboard the Henderson were jolted awake as the ship crashed into the USS Zeilin, an American destroyer accompanying the Presidential party while they traveled through the foggy Puget Sound. This was not the first mishap of the Voyage of Understanding. While traveling through Colorado early in the trip, three people from the President’s party had been killed in a car accident. And now, after a few weeks in Alaska where Harding was able to at least temporarily forget about his Administration’s many troubles, the President was not only sick and tired but two of his Navy’s ships had just smashed into each other almost as soon as he had returned to the continental United States. While the USS Zeilin was badly damaged in the collision, the USS Henderson was not and there were apparently no major injuries on either vessel. But when the President’s valet, Major Arthur Brooks, came to Harding’s stateroom aboard the Henderson to inform him that the captain was calling for all hands on deck, he found the depressed President lying on his bed with his face buried in his hands. “I hope the boat sinks,” President Harding quietly muttered.
It was just hours later that Harding made his whirlwind tour through Seattle, putting on a brave face at his public appearances, but clearly not feeling well. While he was never considered a brilliant orator like Abraham Lincoln, Benjamin Harrison, or his immediate predecessor, Woodrow Wilson, Harding was a strong speaker and excellent communicator who had a unique ability to connect with audiences, but he was obviously — and unusually — halting and confused while speaking in Seattle on July 27th. As he boarded his train at Seattle’s King Street Station that night, Harding was examined by his doctor and by Interior Secretary Hubert Work, who had once been a physician, and they decided to cancel the next several days of planned activities. Instead of stopping in Portland and then visiting Yosemite National Park, the Presidential party was ordered to proceed directly to San Francisco where Harding could rest before giving a speech on the radio planned for July 31st which was expected to be heard by over 5 million people.
Despite the four-leaf clover that had been sent to him by Vivian Little before his Voyage of Understanding, Warren Gamaliel Harding’s luck seemed to be running out. And, as his train sped through Oregon en route to San Francisco’s Palace Hotel on July 28, 1923, President Harding was also running out of time.

Affirmation Conference 2023
I traveled to Provo, Utah for the 2023 edition of Affirmation’s International Conference.
————————————————————
I arrived on Thursday and had lunch at Crown Burgers (I had a pastrami burger) with friends of mine who live in Eagle Mountain, Utah. I’ve known them for a long time, they used to live in Florida. Aaron and Sara are really wonderful. Aaron’s twin brother is gay and this has opened their eyes and they see the many issues the LDS Church has for queer people.
Sara volunteers at the Encircle House in Provo. They’d like to do more to support queer people who are/were LDS. They’d like to open their home to have regular get togethers where queer LDS people and their family & friends can gather to feel loved and supported. If you’re interested, contact me and I’ll put you in touch.
Tumblr media
—————————
Thursday evening was a social held at the Encircle House in Salt Lake City. I was an hour late and when I arrived, I was informed a group had come asking for David and I wasn’t there. The President of Affirmation got very concerned, wondering if there’d been a problem with my flight, was I okay, would I be on hand for the 2 sessions I’m supposed to do at the conference on Saturday. I’m very sorry to have missed those who came to meet me and I didn’t intend to make anyone worry. Sometimes things don’t go according to plans.
I did meet @jacclo and really appreciate that he came and waited. I felt like we had a good conversation and that I learned more about him and his journey. Honestly, getting to meet and connect with other queer Mormons is one of the greatest things.
My favorite room in the Salt Lake City Encircle House is the music room. They have filled the wall with black & white photos of famous queer people. I find seeing all that queer greatness very moving.
Tumblr media
They also have a black sheep in the room, which is such a good symbol of how a lot of queer people feel their role is in their family. The Provo Encircle House also has a black sheep, I wonder if this is something they put in every one of their homes
Tumblr media
When you walk in the house, the door swings open and you don’t see the hidden message until you’re ready to leave and open the door from the inside and see the words painted on the inside edge.
Tumblr media
————————————————————
Friday I spent much of the day in Board meetings and in trainings. That was a new experience for me as a new member of the Affirmation Board of Directors.
Lacey Bagley, the founder of Celebrate Therapy, is on the board and in our meeting she said something that struck me. I sometimes hear people complain that in the LDS Church it is cis gay white men who are seen and heard and who dominate the conversation. Lacey reframed this by calling them the Founding Fathers of the LDS LGBTQ space because they were able to break through the silence and bring visibility and some understanding. They were the most palatable to the wider community and thus were the ones who were listened to. AFAB women and gender nonconforming people are now having a moment and this opportunity has come thanks to the door being opened by those Founding Fathers.
—————————
Then I went to the Provo Encircle House for a social. I met some very cool people and learned things about the house, including that it was originally home to a polygamous family. My favorite room was the meeting room on the 2nd floor. The walls feature black & white pictures of teens & young adults who came to the house during its first week of being open. Seeing the very people who are helped by this house really touched me. Plus, the window with the rainbow colors frames the Provo City Center Temple in a beautiful way.
Tumblr media
The outside of the home is beautiful and I learned the landscaping is done so that there is always something in bloom no matter the season.
Tumblr media
—————————
Friday concluded with dinner and the opening plenary session of the Affirmation Conference. Álvaro Mora was the speaker and the big take away from his remarks was that no one is going to die for you so don’t live your life for others, live life and live it for yourself.
———————————————————
On Saturday, the conference had 4 rounds of break out sessions. You could choose the sessions and groups that most interested you. I was in charge of 2 of the sessions. The first one was called Navigating Living Waters, and the second one was about building community for LGBTQ members in our churches. I was happy to meet @raspberryusagi when she attended one of my sessions.
In the evening Tekulvē Jackson-Vann spoke about how people often say they don’t see color, and how that feels so invalidating. It’s the same as if someone were to say they don’t see queerness, instead they see everyone as just the same. It’s a way to avoid uncomfortable conversations. If you can’t see all of me, you get a muted version of me. Can you imagine watching the Barbie move in black & white, you’d miss so much!
Tekulvē ended by asking a series of questions, for which a person of color gives mostly the same answer and white people have a different answer for each question: What color were you when you were born? What color are you when you’re hit hard? What color are you when you’re sick? What color are you when you’re cold? What color are you when you’re dead? And yet, I’m the one who is ‘colored.’
Laurie Lee Hall also spoke and the big message I took is “Live a life that leaves a mark that cannot be erased!”
—————————
Saturday night, @loveerran and I went for ice cream at Leatherby’s in Orem, Utah. Their serving sizes are generous. We met @sky-the-trans-guy00 and had a very good conversation. I learned some more about him. He is a high-quality individual
Tumblr media
————————————————————
On Sunday, Stacey Harkey was the keynote speaker at the plenary session and he is very entertaining. He followed his remarks by doing a Q&A in which he was open and vulnerable.
He spoke of a dung beetle and how it is conditioned to roll dung, and will never roll a precious gem. Likewise, we are surrounded by people who have been conditioned to prize the dung, and that may cause you to wish to be dung, but you are not. Don’t be ashamed to be you. A gem is valuable because it is uncommon.
The main points of his remarks were: Be who you are! (you have to explore & discover who you are) Live who you are! (as you come to understand yourself, start living true to you) Own who you are! (you don’t need to apologize for being you, you get to be you and be proud of who you are)
—————————
After the conference, I have extended family who hosted dinner for me and some of my friends. Being surrounded by friends and family in a space that is warm, loving and supportive was a great way to end my trip.

RVC9 Article - December 2023
From Rachel Kibler, RVC9
Happy December, Region 9! As we move out of autumn and into winter and the holidays, I’m getting more and more excited about… Mensa national elections! Yes! It’s that time! As I’ve been saying from the beginning, I would love for there to be a contested election in Region 9, regardless of whether I run. I’ve heard some rumblings from folx who are interested and would love to hear more! You need to have been a member in good standing for at least six months prior to March 31, 2024 (those months don’t need to be consecutive!), and you need to have your membership dues for the 2024-2025 year paid by the end of January. On that note, consider renewing early just in case! If you haven’t yet talked to me about what it means to be on the national board, either in a nationally-elected position (Chair, Secretary, Treasurer), or in my regionally-elected role (Regional Vice Chair), please do. It’s both a lot more work than you might expect and also a lot more opportunities for joy than you might think. You can email me at [email protected]. Please don’t go into this blind.
If you want the opportunity to talk in person, I’ll be in Tucson and Phoenix in January, at the GLAAM (Greater Los Angeles Area Mensa) Regional Gathering in February (https://www.glaam.org/regional-gathering/stargazing-2024/), and at the San Diego Mensa Regional Gathering in May! For Mensans in my beloved state of Utah, I’ll be at some events, and I’m always up for coffee or hot chocolate with those here and those passing through! Let me know if you’re in my neck of the woods, and I’ll make time for you.
Thanks for all you do in Mensa. Keep engaging (kindly) with each other. Show up, volunteer, debate, dine, answer trivia questions, and generally be excellent to each other. Y’all make Mensa what it is.

Hayduke Day 48: After stopping to get caches for @artemis_hikes, @heavyteva, and @involuted, we continue up to the road where, through the magic of unlimited Garmin inReach messaging, we are expecting to find @oldmanrigney and @kasekittykoopkat waiting for us (or arriving shortly). Not long after we reach the road, they arrive with food and beverage. Huzzah! They plan to hike the section between here and the Bill Hall Trailhead. They’ve arranged for a shuttle to pick them up from here and take them to Bill Hall. However, I volunteer our group to drop them off at Bill Hall with their car and then drop the car off back here. While we’re considering it, the shuttle arrives. However, the driver says he’s having an issue with one of his tires and may need to get a new one in town. I’m not supportive of this shoddy shuttle service, and I advocate telling them to get lost. You have one job, shuttle man. The shuttle drives back to town (alone) to see if they can find a new tire. After much deliberation, it’s decided. The shuttle will be abandoned, and we will facilitate the dropping off of our fellow Ducks before returning their car and continuing our hike. And since this will require us to pass through the town of Kanab, Utah, we might as well stay the night there. We did almost ten miles today; that’s deserving of town food, right? Somewhat ironically, we get a flat tire driving to town. However, the spare goes on in record time, with everyone jumping at the opportunity to help (and the promise of town). @heavyteva has a car in Kanab, and so it’s decided that he will drive @oldmanrigney and @kasekittykoopkat to Bill Hall while their car gets new tires. We say goodbye and check into a room. I pick up the car when it’s ready and then retrieve @heavyteva from his car’s storage parking spot (which costs just $30/month) when he’s returned. It’s Mexican food for dinner, and we close down the restaurant with some friendly waitstaff. Tomorrow, we drive back to Hack Canyon to continue north. Pretty epic nearo day today. Day: Hack Canyon to Hack Canyon Trailhead Distance: 7.94 mi / 12.78 km Elevation gain: 1,122 ft / 342 m #hayduketrail #EXTREMEWALKING

The first step is to let your employees know about the upcoming clothing drive and encourage their participation. You can do this through email announcements, posters in common areas, or during company meetings. Excite your team about the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of children in need and inspire them to clean out their closets for a good cause.
Step 2: Arrange Collection Barrels for Donations
To facilitate the clothing drive, BBBSU will provide collection barrels to your company. Placing 2-4 barrels, with one barrel per floor, is a recommended approach to increase convenience and visibility. These barrels will serve as a constant reminder of the ongoing drive and motivate employees to contribute.
Step 3: Schedule Donation Pick-ups with BBBSU
Once your clothing drive is underway, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Utah will coordinate regular pick-ups to collect the donated items. Typically, we schedule pick-ups once a week, ensuring a smooth and efficient process. However, if your company generates a high volume of donations and requires more frequent pick-ups, simply give us a call, and we'll gladly accommodate your needs.
The regular pick-ups will keep the donations flowing and maintain enthusiasm among employees, knowing that their contributions are making a meaningful impact.
Step 4: Set the Duration of the Clothing Drive
Corporate clothing drives typically span 1-2 weeks, but the duration can be adjusted based on your company's preferences and the response from employees. Longer drives can result in a larger collection of donations, while shorter ones can create a sense of urgency and prompt immediate action.
Regardless of the duration, every piece of clothing donated will make a difference in a young life, and your company's efforts will be greatly appreciated.
Step 5: Donate Preferred Clothing Items
BBBSU appreciates a wide range of gently-used clothing items. Some of the items we love receiving include:
- Used clothes in good condition
- Tops and sweaters
- Pants and shorts
- Footwear (shoes, sneakers, etc.)
- Hats
- Bags and backpacks
- Belts
- Bedding (sheets, pillowcases)
- Blankets
- Towels
These donations directly benefit the mentees, providing them with essential clothing items to boost their confidence and self-esteem.
Step 6: Enjoy the Benefits of Corporate Sponsorship
As a corporate partner supporting Big Brothers Big Sisters of Utah through clothing drives, your company will receive sponsor credit on our website. This recognition showcases your commitment to making a positive impact on the community and aligning with a cause that promotes youth empowerment and mentorship.
Additionally, BBBSU will give your company a social media shoutout, thanking you for your valuable contributions. This not only recognizes your efforts but also inspires others to follow in your footsteps and support this important cause.

How to Write a Travel Article
A travel article is an account of a trip or journey that features descriptions, anecdotes, and comparisons from a first-person perspective. It can be published in daily newspapers, popular magazines, or specialist travel publications. Travelling koh phi phi
An effective travel article makes the reader want to go on a trip to the destination in question. To write a travel article, you must have a clear idea of what your readers are looking for and how they like to read about their travels. more info
Getting There and Getting Around
Getting there and getting around are two of the most important aspects of any trip, especially when you’re traveling in a foreign country. From figuring out what the best route is to finding the right bus or train, there’s always something new to learn when it comes to navigating the roads of a different world.
Whether you’re in the market for a first-class flight or an inexpensive city break, the right mode of transportation is the key to making the most of your time and money. If you’re not sure where to start, ask your travel agent or hotel concierge for recommendations on the best route from A to B.
When it comes to actually getting around a new place, the metro or subway is usually the most logical choice for many travelers. It’s a great way to get a feel for the local vibe and see how well your hotel is located within the network of rail lines, and you can often save money by purchasing a day pass rather than buying a roundtrip ticket each time you hop on or off the train.
It’s also a good idea to try and be as active as possible during your stay. There’s no shortage of things to do in a large city, so take advantage of your time and get out and see what the town has to offer! From exploring the town’s landmarks to catching the latest show at the local theater, there are plenty of ways to enjoy yourself.
Festivals and Special Events
Festivals and special events are a great way to see a new place while interacting with other travelers. They are also great places to explore your own interests and get a glimpse into the culture.
While destination articles focus on a traveler’s overall experience in a particular location, special-interest pieces explore a specific aspect of the region or country. These can include art in Colombia, ghost towns in the U.S., trekking in Patagonia, alpaca farms in Australia, motorbiking in Brazil, railroads in France, volunteering in Tanzania – the list goes on!
Generally, festivals are large-scale events that involve thousands of people and bring together music, food, and other attractions. They are usually organized by cities, regions, or countries, and can be a key way to introduce visitors to a destination’s culture.
In some destinations, they’re the most popular event of the year. For example, Utah’s Imagine Dragons puts on a huge three-day music festival twice a year. It’s a celebration of the LGBTQ community, and it’s also a chance to raise money for human rights organizations.
Another type of festival is a religious celebration, such as the Hindu Holi, the Jewish Hanukkah or the Muslim Eid. These are also important ways to showcase local culture and history, attracting international tourists.
Tourists are drawn to festivals for a variety of reasons, but they usually want to immerse themselves in the local community and culture. They want to learn about the country’s traditions, meet locals and experience a different side of life.
Festivals and special events are a great source of revenue for many destinations. The monies generated by them are often distributed to local businesses, including restaurants and hotels. They are a great way to bring visitors into town, and they also give local businesses the opportunity to promote themselves.
While it’s common to think of festivals as a way to celebrate the culture of a destination, it’s important to remember that they can be a way for destinations to boost their tourism revenue and create economic growth. They can also be a way for people to connect with each other, helping visitors form lasting bonds.
When To Go
Traveling to a far off destination can be an incredible experience. Whether you’re looking to see the world or just to get away from it all, there are some things to consider before you book that trip of your dreams.
Among the many considerations, one of the most important is the time of year you want to visit the place in question. The right time of year will determine everything from the weather to the tourist traffic to the amount of attractions open or closed to the public.
Choosing the right season for your adventure can make or break your holiday, so it’s well worth spending some time considering when to go on your next vacation. Besides, the right time of year can also affect your pocketbook by securing better deals on airfare and accommodation. The best time of year to go on a trip will depend on the region you’re in, but most experts agree that spring is generally a good time of year to be traveling in the northern hemisphere. From April through to October, you’ll be able to enjoy more sunshine, more flowers and less crowds than in the summer months.
Unique Experiences
If you’re looking for a truly unique travel experience, it’s important to keep an open mind and seek out opportunities that are outside your comfort zone. This will help you to push your boundaries and have an experience that will leave you with memories you’ll cherish forever.
If your bucket list includes experiences that are out of your comfort zone, make sure to get in touch with locals to find out about unique events or activities that you can participate in while visiting a new destination. Many cities and towns host festivals, concerts, and other special events throughout the year, so be sure to check out these opportunities when planning your trip.
One of the most unique travel experiences is diving into the Great Barrier Reef, where you’ll swim alongside schools of colorful fish and admire intricate coral patterns. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced diver, diving is a truly incredible experience that can change the way you see the world.
Seeing polar bears in their natural habitat is another experience that can transform your perspective on the world. These powerful predators can weigh up to 1,500 pounds and are adapted to living in the harsh Arctic environment. Adding this experience to your bucket list will give you the chance to see these amazing creatures up close, learn about their behavior, and create memories that will last a lifetime.

The OP wrote a lovely post and it's message is beautiful.
I also think this is an example of the LDS Church in Utah is different than it is in other places. There is a density which allows them opportunities to do things which aren't scalable to other places where members are fewer.
I live in the Tampa Bay area and the 4 counties here have 3 million people, which is about equal to the entire state of Utah, but we have 4 stakes compared to I don't have a clue how many are in Utah. We have 1 young single adult ward for this area. I was surprised when I learned that Utah has mid-singles wards, and I'm glad they have enough population to do that. I've seen difficulties locally in accommodating people with disabilities, we just don't have the resources or the training to do this, especially since we operate on volunteer labor with frequent turnover. There's also the Genesis Group which serves the needs of African-American Latter-day Saints in the Salt Lake area. I know members here who would appreciate the opportunity to attend a similar group.
It makes me wonder if the church in Utah could have an LGBTQ branch? Could queerstake actually become an irl group?
Come, all ye that are heavy laden
One of the things that has really stood out to me the last few weeks is that Jesus and the gospel are for everyone. I recently attended church in a ward where most of the attendees are or were incarcerated. Almost all had been excommunicated and were no longer even members of the church. But still they came, and the spirit was there and it felt raw and real and relevant.
In a ward where most people aren’t members, adjustments have to be made. A way is found to help people who are under armed guard feel welcome. Service opportunities and assignments for them and their loved ones are made available. They are specifically welcomed and encouraged in their spiritual journey toward God, regardless of where on the path they may be at the moment. There is an understanding that the need for healing is real.
I imagine this ward exists, at least in in part, to provide a socially and spiritually safe and encouraging environment for those who might be ostracized in a typical family ward because of their history and non-conformity. I am glad the church is seizing the opportunity to minister to these men, extending love, kindness and compassion in a sensitive and caring way to them and their families. I am truly heartened to see how traditional ward structures are stretched and modified to accommodate them and make things work, to meet the needs of the moment and the individual - despite circumstances that might cause others to recoil or cross to the other side of the road and pass them by.
I appreciate how clear it was that those men are specifically invited, despite their past deeds, any feelings they may have about where they are in life, or the internal and external shame that they may feel. They are told repeatedly that Jesus wants them and that their ward family wants them too. That is real Christianity.
Love, Erran

Why is it that I have to remind people I interviewed with to tell me if they filled the position already or not when they said that they would let me know either way? Like, if I interview, I expect to hear back one way or another. I shouldn’t have to email them again basically going “so you know how you said you would let me know either way by the end of last week? yeah, you haven’t emailed me at all yet what’s up with that”
also I’m just really frustrated that out of the four interviews I did in the past two weeks, two have been no’s (one required prompting to actually tell me that), one I literally could not understand more than 50% of his words at best because he had such a crazy thick accent and my hearing isn’t the greatest, and the other.... well, it’s a volunteer position, and doesn’t run as long as some of the others, but they’re waiting on me to confirm that I can do it rather than the other way around, which is nice. I guess I’ll have to email them and confirm that I’ll be working up in Canada for just over a month later this spring.
