One year ago today, I made the decision to let it all go after 5 years of locking. When I started my jouney, I told myself that I would give it 5 years and be done, I didnt know I would grow to love them so much though. People decide to let their locs go for various reasons. I had to let mine go for a few reasons. As you know, I'm a performing artist and actor. The locs worked great on the music front, but on the acting side of things, not so much. Seems theres such a negative stigma attatched to locs as I was only being considered for parts like the robber, rapist, murderer, crook, etc. The second reason I let them go was cost, good LORD!! I was spending a small fortune trying to simply keep my hair looking presentable, I longed for the days where I could just get 15 minute edge up and GO!! I was spending between $90-150 a month.... ON HAIR!! The third reason was the time factor. Ya'll, on a Saturday, I'd have to wake up at 7am in the Bronx, be at the hair shop in Brooklyn by 9am, go through washing, deep conditioning, retwisting, drying and styling, which would normally have me leaving the shop around 1 or 2pm, not to mention stopping in Harlem to the barber for my line up. It would be about 4 or 5pm by the time I finished getting my hair done. While I miss my locs every now and then, the time and money I've saved with my current look is one hell of a trade off.
