Week 8: Transmutation - Prestidigitation

This last image took me a while to do because I scrapped my original idea after already working on it for a week. And I'm glad I did! Because I love the look of this one way more!

From the start of this art adventure, I knew I wanted to draw Volo at some point and since I ended up drawing the schools out of their planned order, I guess I saved the best for last. I absolutely adore his portrayal in Baldur's Gate 3 and having Volo in my camp is simply a delight! It's too bad he doesn't have a bigger story, but getting to hear him greet me so cheerily every time always puts a smile on my face.

There aren't a lot of transmutation options for a level 1 wizard. Fortunately he has prestidigitation! Here Volo is using that show magic to add some flare to his retelling of the attack on the Emerald Grove—that moment when the goblins showed up flying banners of the Absolute and leading a massive dragon! There were flames and blood and hordes of enemies...That's how it went down, right?

Volo had done pretty well for himself, making his way across the islands via hitchhiking, walking, and asking Pokemon to take him across the waters. Sometimes he had to take a boat, but that wasn't too bad either; sometimes it was nice to take things slow and leisurely and he didn't outright hate the company of others. Especially since he got to hear of interesting sights, such as the ruins off of Route 13 on Ula'ula island.

It was home to one of the Guardian Deities of the islands, and he was quite interested in at least taking a look at it from the outside. He would never intrude without permission though from either the locals and the deity itself, no matter how curious he was.

The motel at the entrance of the desert was a good place to stop for the night. It wasn't too busy surprisingly - perhaps because of the heat - and Volo could take a chance to settle down. Not too many noisy tourists at least. Though to say that he was expecting to see the damn Taki Cookie kid hanging around the place would have been a lie.

He wavered for a moment, standing awkwardly in the doorway to the motel with his newly acquired key in hand, and grimaced slightly. Only slightly. He didn't mind them that much, it was just the principle of the matter, but he might as well acknowledge they're existence.

"Oh, you!" Volo called cheerily, shoving his hands into his pockets and stepping out of the doorway so he wasn't blocking the motel entrance. What was the kid's name again? Had he even gotten it in the first place? Whatever. Didn't matter. "Fancy seeing you out here. Not a lot of customers out here, you know. Not that I've seen anyway."

funniest thing about the potential cyrus volo giratina dynamic is that volo would be obsessed with cyrus but cyrus would absolutely despise volo hour long discussions about the nature of the world and the value of spirit where volo is like "actually the world is flawed inherently and thus we need to remake it, becoming god is the answer of course because hardships and suffering are an unecessary part of this world and I (graciously of course no need to thank me) will become god for everyones sake" vs cyrus going "actually its the people who are inherently flawed and need to be reset into unfeeling perfect beings (including myself ofc godhood is for losers) in order to erase suffering because otherwise id have to acknowledge my trauma and i refuse" with their giant fucked up centipede dragon dog looking down at the two pissed because it fell for volos pyramid scheme out of genuine pokemon affection and after being defeated was like "oh...yeah ok i can see how destroying the world might not have been the right play" and is now like "cyrus listen to me you cant handle they/them godhood dont try to bcome god" but neither of them get that cyrus WASNT trying to become god he was just trying to set off a universal nuke because he refused to go to therapy and inherently just wants to be understood by others. volo is also a catty minimum wage worker who has infinite amounts of patience (for his plans) but also messes with people so after a while he decides itd be funny to Not Shut Up (volo is as insufferable as melli here (well. anyways)) but cyrus' face is long locked into the eternal grimace of 4 am espresso shots for a degree that went nowhere so he cant be crack by even the harshest of karens, the only thing that makes him crack is the fact that giratina actually does like him and try to give him a chance because unlike volo cyrus def feels like he has way less options, ultimately resulting in a yakuza 0 style brawl between the two because they also share the same tendency to just to absolutely berserk and volo wouldnt be able to handle that fact that not only god but satan also passed him over
