I actually hear a lot of VW owners saying VW now. Maybe it's an upper midwest thing???
Haha no, it's not just the midwestern thing!
The popularizing of "VW" was part of the intentional and concentrated effort for the brand to provide more distance from the name Volkswagen and their history of being founded by the Nazi Germany Labor Front in 1937 and the use of slave labor of about 15,000 people at Arbeitsdorf concentration camp to produce their cars, among others.
They were first registered as Gesellschaft zur Vorbereitung des Deutschen Volkswagens mbH (Company for the Preparation of the German Volkswagen Ltd) in 1937, which was maybe shortened to Gezuvor (GeZuVor) for short? And then a year later in 1938 the company renamed to Volkswagenwerk GmbH. (LLC basically). This is also when they open the factory town called Stadt des KdF-Wagens.
The shortening to just Volkswagen instead of Volkswagenwerk happens post war (town is also renamed). In April 1945, American forces capture the factory town and hand over control to the British (it was in their territorial zone). The British could've dismantled the factory since it was used for military purposes also, but they were short of smaller/lighter transport so the leadership and their German assistant....had the factory produce them 20,000 cars. Y'know, the factory that was probably 80% slave labor from concentration camps. The British tries to keep the factory open after the war & tries to sell it, no buyers, offers it to Henry Ford for free, and then finally the German assistant just takes it over and that's how they stayed open.
...also in case anyone's like wow what a fluke, they clearly turned around as a company! Redemption arc?? — Volkswagen do Brasil was accused of spying on workers and acting as police informants of their activities during Brazilian military dictatorship rule in the 1970's, which lead to mass arrests and also the torture of many Volkswagen factory workers.
So like. Weird that the literal torture of their factory workers in the support of terrible military dictatorships kept happening.
The company TODAY does publicly and openly admit this Nazi history on their website, so they're not like, outright lying.
But like this dealership alludes to: "While it took awhile to gain traction in the United States due to the Nazi connection, it (Volkswagen) soon grew in popularity."
The conscious effort to rebrand to anglophones (especially Americans) as "VW" for short was an intentional part of overcoming the distrust of the Nazi origins of the company. The Volkswagen was first brought to the US in 1949, and only two cars sold.
Their real big extremely wildly successful American advertising campaign "Think Small" in 1959 also notably (from what I can tell) doesn't ever say Volkswagen, only VW.
Other campaigns of the 60's-onwards may say Volkswagen in the text, but the VW logo and use of "VW" is more frequent.
Anyways wild they kept the super Nazi Volk related name.
**(the company admitted to this approx number in 1998, and then set up a voluntary restitution fund as a result of being sued by Holocaust survivors).
It's wild that Volkswagen never included a name change in their rebranding. Like even thinking about it for two seconds it's just like, wow, you really stuck with that name, huh?

Volkswagen Limousine (Type 1), 1945. Today, December 27, is the 75th anniversary of the start of series production of the civilian Volkswagen, referred to internally as “Type 1”. The model had originally been planned as a project of the National Socialists (Nazis). However from 1939 onwards the Wolfsburg plant produced armaments instead of vehicles. Up to the end of World War II, only 630 units of the model, which had been renamed “KdF-Wagen” in 1938, left the factory. US troops liberated the Volkswagen plant and the city then known as “Stadt des KdF-Wagens” which was later named Wolfsburg, on April 11, 1945. The trusteeship over Volkswagenwerk GmbH had been assumed by the British Military Government in June 1945. The British planned to use the VW Type 1 to perform transport tasks within their occupation zone. Senior Resident Officer Major Ivan Hirst played a key role in this development, with his enthusiasm for technology and cars, he succeeded in transforming a former armaments plant into a civilian industrial company in an impressively short space of time.

FULL HISTORY OF AUDI MOTORS:
The Name Audi Signifies that it's one the Highly Oldest Company in the World.The Start Up place is located in Zwickau, Germany.
Audi is a German Car producing Company established by August Horch. The roots of this amazing auto-faction date back to November 14, 1899, the day when its organizer, August Horch, set up his absolute first vehicle organization, named as A. Horch and Cie.
Motorwagen Werke, in the area of Cologne where he constructed his absolute first vehicle in 1901.
