Andretti Autosport’s ultra-successful rallycross partnership with Volkswagen has come to an end and the Indianapolis based team have decided to put its rallycross activities on hold for the time being.
Having won an astounding five consecutive drivers’ titles between 2015-19 Andretti Autosport took both Scott Speed (2015 - 2018) and Tanner Foust (2019) to American rallycross' top step.
Despite Scott Speed switching to Subaru and Volkswagen reducing their involvement 2019followed the same pattern as the previous years with an Andretti Autosport Volkswagen Beetle claiming top honours.
This is not the end of Andretti Autopsort and off road racing though, the team are preparing for the first round of the 2021 Extreme E championship. Nor have they left rallycross for good, team boss Michael Andretti hinting they could return for the new Nitro Rallycross class for electric cars as early as 2022.

Volkswagen of America und Andretti Autosport haben den rennfertigen Volkswagen Beetle GRC für die Global-Rallycross-Meisterschaft enthüllt. Vor dem dritten Saisonlauf der Serie in Washington D.C. wurde der 544 PS (400 kW) starke Allradler vorgestellt, der später in der Saison debütieren und von Tanner Foust und Scott Speed pilotiert wird. Yammine: Scott Speed and the VW Beetle are the First Ever Amercas Rallycross Champions
Scott Speed today earned his fourth straight rallycross driver’s championship title, taking the inaugural season of the Americas Rallycross series.
The series, which takes over from the now-defunct Red Bull Global Rallycross, had a four-event season, which Speed led coming into the final race weekend at Austin, Texas’s Circuit of the Americas.
Scott’s main competition came from his Volkswagen Andretti Rallycross teammate, Tanner Foust, who was in second place. And although Foust won the event this weekend’s final race, Speed had earned enough points over the course of this weekend to be guaranteed the title if he started the weekend’s final heat.
The Beetles finished first and second ahead of Loenbro Hoonigan’s Steve Arpin in a Ford and two Subarus.
The one-two finish in the race and, indeed, the driver’s championship will be familiar to anyone who has kept up with American rallycross racing in the last couple of years. Having won the final three seasons of Red Bull Global Rallycross, Speed has lived up to his name, despite a less than speedy mantra.
“Our mantra for the weekend will be to stay consistent and out of trouble,” said Foust ahead of the weekend. “This is the first chance my family’s had to come to a race this year, so I’m looking forward to enjoying it with them.”
With no official word on the series fate next year, this weekend may have been a finale as well a final for Americas Rallycross. For its part, though, Volkswagen has indicated that it would be interested in racing again next year if the series returns.

Después de un arduo fin de semana que demostró lo mejor de la determinación, velocidad y trabajo duro del equipo, Tanner Foust, de Volkswagen Andretti Rallycross, logró terminar en tercer lugar en una final del Nitro Rallycross. Una aglomeración de los que iban a la cabeza en la primera vuelta sacó a Scott Speed del evento y abrió la posibilidad de que un hábil Foust alcanzara el tercer escalón del podio.
El fin de semana para Foust no fue fácil y el equipo del Rockstar Energy Drink Beetle Rallycross No. 34 estuvo muy ocupado, pues tuvo que reparar los daños causados por la compleja pista y los autos tan pegados unos a otros. Foust alcanzó su Challenger Heat a pesar de tener un auto dañado y los mecánicos en ambos lados del garaje de Volkswagen Andretti Rallycross trabajaron juntos bajo una tremenda presión de tiempo para preparar al Beetle multicampeón del rallycross para la Semifinal.
En la Final, Foust comenzó en la mitad posterior de la alineación únicamente para surgir del caos que se formó en la primera vuelta y llegar en tercer lugar. A pesar del sustancial daño sufrido en la aglomeración, el No. 34 Rockstar Energy Drink Beetle Rallycross siguió de cerca a los líderes, pero no pudo rebasar esa posición antes de que cayera la bandera con cuadros.

TCR Scandinavia Titel für Kristoffersson – Meisterschaft in der TCR Scandinavia geht 2018 an den Golf GTI TCR
Champion daheim: Johan Kristoffersson (S) hat die TCR Scandinavia 2018, die weitestgehend in Schweden ausgetragen wird, für sich entschieden. Der aktuelle Rallycross-Weltmeister sicherte sich beim Saisonfinale mit einem Sieg im ersten und Platz fünf im zweiten Rennen den Titel – und drehte damit den Spieß auf der Zielgeraden noch einmal um. Nachdem Konkurrent Robert Dahlgren (S, Seat) in der Woche vor dem Saisonabschluss am grünen Tisch zunächst aberkannte Meisterschaftspunkte wieder zugesprochen bekam, ging Kristoffersson mit einem Sieben-Punkte-Rückstand in die abschließenden beiden Rennen. Die Führung holte sich Kristoffersson bereits im ersten Durchgang zurück, im zweiten musste Dahlgren mit einem technischen Defekt frühzeitig aufgeben – damit stand der 29-Jährige zum zweiten Mal nach 2012 als Champion fest und entthronte in Dahlgren den Titelträger des Vorjahres.
Kristoffersson hat zudem die Chance, mit Volkswagen innerhalb von acht Tagen zwei Titel einzufahren: In der FIA Rallycross-Weltmeisterschaft (WRX) geht er am kommenden Wochenende in Austin (USA) mit 73 Zählern Vorsprung an den Start – verbleiben davon 60, steht er als neuer und alter Weltmeister bereits fest.

Nitro World Games „Bronze“ für Foust: starke Leistung mit dem Volkswagen Beetle beim Nitro World Rallycross
Tanner Foust (USA) hat beim ersten Rallycross-Rennen in der Geschichte der Nitro World Games „Bronze“ gefeiert. In Salt Lake City/Utah (USA) beendete Foust mit dem Volkswagen Beetle das Finale mit acht Supercars aus verschiedenen Rallycross-Serien auf Rang drei. Volkswagen Andretti-Rallycross-Teamkollege Scott Speed (USA), der die Qualifikation als Zweiter beendet und sein Halbfinale gewonnen hatte, wurde Opfer des Chaos in den ersten beiden Kurven. Er wurde vom späteren Sieger Timmy Hansen (S, Peugeot) in einen Dreher gezwungen und musste frühzeitig aufgeben. Foust setzte sich dagegen in der turbulenten Anfangsphase durch und sicherte sich trotz eingebüßter Frontschürze und damit eingeschränkter Aerodynamik Rang drei hinter Mattias Ekström (S, Audi).
Die Nitro World Games wurden 2018 in Salt Lake City/Utah (USA) ausgetragen – auf einer eigens für den Rallycross-Wettbewerb durch Travis Pastrana entworfenen Strecke, die das Spektaktel erst möglich machte. Etwa durch einen „Gap Jump���, einem weiten Sprung zwischen zwei Rampen, alternativen Linienführungen und Steilkurven. Die Besonderheit: Neben Supercars aus dem Americas Rallycross waren auch jene aus der FIA Rallycross-Weltmeisterschaft (WRX) am Start. In einer Woche in Austin/Texas (USA) sind beide Rallycross-Serien erneut auf ein und derselben Strecke – wenngleich in unterschiedlichen Wettbewerben.

FIA Formel-3-Europameisterschaft Platz vier das Maximum – Rückschlag für Ticktum im Titelkampf
Daniel Ticktum (GB) geht mit einer großen Aufgabe in die letzten drei Rennen der FIA Formel-3-Europameisterschaft beim Saisonfinale in Hockenheim. Denn die Läufe 25 bis 27 der Nachwuchsserie in Spielberg (Österreich) bildeten einen Rückschlag für den Tabellenführer, der seinen ersten Platz in der Meisterschaft ausgerechnet auf einer seiner favorisierten Rennstrecken einbüßte. Ein achter Platz im ersten Durchgang und ein Vierter im dritten blieben das Maximum für den Motopark-Piloten. Im zweiten wurde Ticktum zudem in einen Rennunfall verwickelt, bei dem er frühzeitig ausschied. Aus einem Drei-Punkte-Vorsprung wurde ein 49-Zähler-Rückstand – zwei Siege sowie einmal Platz zwei gingen in Spielberg an Mick Schumacher (D, Dallara-Mercedes), der die Tabellenspitze übernahm. Ticktums Teamkollege Jonathan Aberdein (ZA) feierte im dritten Rennen „powered by Volkswagen“ ein Podiumsresultat. In der Gesamtwertung führt Schumacher (329 Punkte) vor Ticktum (280).
Das Saisonfinale der Formel-3-EM wird vom 12. bis 14. Oktober in Hockenheim (Deutschland) ausgetragen.

TCR Germany Finale mit guten Resultaten – Volkswagen Kundenteams in Hockenheim in den Top Ten
Benjamin Leuchter (D) und Niko Kankkunen (FIN) haben in der TCR Germany die besten Resultate „powered by Volkswagen“ gefeiert. Leuchter erreichte beim Saisonfinale der nationalen TCR-Serie mit dem Golf GTI TCR im ersten Rennen Rang fünf, Kankkunen im zweiten Durchgang Rang sechs. Beim Saisonabschluss fiel zudem die Meisterschaftsentscheidung zugunsten von Harald Proczyk (A, Opel). Luca Engstler (D, Hyundai), der den Anfang der Saison mit dem Golf GTI TCR bestritten hatte, wurde Vizemeister.

Rekordfahrt Bonneville 338,15 Kilometer in der Stunde – neuer Geschwindigkeitsrekord durch den Jetta
Volkswagen of America hat mit einem speziell vorbereiteten Jetta auf dem Bonneville-Salzsee im US-amerikanischen Bundesstaat Utah mit 210,16 Meilen pro Stunde (338,15 km/h) einen neuen Geschwindigkeitsrekord aufgestellt. Pilot Scott Goetz (USA) unterbot mit dem 447 kW (608 PS) starken Rekordfahrt-Jetta den bisherigen Geschwindigkeits-Weltrekord seiner Klasse für Landfahrzeuge. Für den Vortrieb griff Volkswagen of America auf einen Vierzylinder-Turbomotor (TSI) der Baureihe EA888 zurück. Zur Leistungssteigerung setzten die Volkswagen Ingenieure unter anderem neue Pleuel, Kolben, Ventile und Nockenwellen sowie einen größeren Turbolader und eine neue Abgasanlage ein. Der serienmäßige Motorblock und die Kurbelwelle blieben unverändert.

Five Minutes of Fury: 2017 Los Angeles Red Bull Global RallyCross
Car racing can be difficult to watch. NASCAR is found by many to be boring for its lack of right turns and Formula 1’s long midrace parades can induce sleep. Many just don’t seem to have the patience or care to focus on cars going around in circles for more than 10 minutes. Thankfully, there’s a series that can compete with your smartphone for five-minute bursts of entertainment.
Though rallycross was born in Europe 50 years ago, Red Bull Global RallyCross (GRC) has won over legions of fans in the seven years it has been racing in the U.S. Affordable production cars like the Volkswagen Beetle, Honda Civic, and Subaru WRX STI are stripped down and heavily modified to become 600-horsepower rally beasts that sling mud, launch off 40-foot jumps, and reach 60 mph in less than 2.0 seconds. They feel louder than modern F1 cars and sound terrifyingly better. And once a year, residents in Southern California are treated to this bite-sized racing spectacle in their backyard.
The Port of Los Angeles in San Pedro, California, is home to the final race of the Red Bull GRC season and also serves as the series’ home race. Like all courses on the calendar, the L.A. circuit consists of a tarmac and dirt section complete with a jump that sends cars soaring through the air, many times while side by side. The course features a “joker lap” section that offers a shortcut, which can only be taken once to throw strategy into the mix. Sailboats cruise by in the harbor alongside the track and even the Space-X Falcon 9 was on display, fresh from its trip to space only days before.
Attendance at the race has grown each year, and 2017 is no exception. The grandstands were packed with people wearing various team hats and shirts. The audience was contagiously responsive to every pass, crash, and jump the drivers treated it to.
“It’s the motorsport for people with Attention Deficit Disorder,” says Tanner Foust, two-time series champion. “The races are only four to five minutes long, with a drag-racing start, with pushing and jumping and sliding and gravel and tarmac. Basically all the highlight reels you find in motorsport all packed into those four or five minutes.”
Even the paddock is frantic, as battle-scarred cars limp back to their garages, where mechanics throw themselves over and under the cars attempting to make any repairs they can before they’re sent back out to do it again.
The paddock also offers fans an opportunity to get up close to their favorite drivers for impromptu selfies and autographs, which the drivers give without a single scowl. This accessibility is reminiscent of scenes from motorsports past, where cars drive by walking spectators and fans can get up close to the ensuing drama as it unfolds in the garage—a far cry from many modern motorsports series.
Racing consists of qualifying before they begin a series of heats that award championship points. Heats consist of three to five cars that run flat out over just five laps. Next come the six-lap semifinal races, where the field is split into groups and more points awarded. The top four finishers of each semifinal progress to the main event race, while the rest compete to finish in the top two positions in a four-lap last chance qualifier race. The main event race is the longest of the competition, but still only 10 laps.
The championship has two classes, Supercar and Lites. Supercar features legendary open-wheel racing names like Andretti, Rahal, and Herta as team owners, and former World Rally Championship drivers such as Chris Atkinson and Patrick Sandell. Lites provide equally exciting races, although with half the horsepower, and represent the rising talent that will proliferate the Supercar class in the years to come.
Scott Speed, a former F1 and NASCAR driver, headed into the weekend’s race as the driver to beat in the Supercar class. He’d won the last two championships and held the championship lead over his Volkswagen Andretti teammate Foust with a comfortable margin. Speed just needed to finish, while his teammate needed to dominate.
For a while, it looked as though a championship upset was in the cards. Even Foust had a glimmer of hope in his eyes as he stepped out of his Beetle after a heat victory, while Speed finished fourth, losing valuable points.
“It’s maximum attack, as Scott has everything to lose, and I’m trying to do all I can to gain,” said Foust, sweat dripping off his face. “If there’s a chance, I’ll go for it for sure.”
Foust did everything he could to steal the championship away from his teammate by winning his heats, semifinal, and even the main event race. But Speed had done enough. He won a heat and finished second to Foust in the main event race, ultimately winning the championship by 19 points.
“I’m feeling great. It was an incredible day,” said enthused team owner Michael Andretti moments after the race, with a rare smile. “To finish one-two in the race, one-two in the championship, it’s been a great year.”
The year has been great for Andretti and his drivers, and the day has certainly been wonderful for everyone in attendance at this year’s GRC finale.

The year has been great for Andretti and his drivers, and the day has certainly been wonderful for everyone in attendance at this year’s GRC finale.
