the one single thing that sucks about only listening to downloaded music on 3 different apps (none of them are apple or spotify) is that you never get to have an accurate wrapped
anyways these are my 3 weed-smoking girlfriends who i love very much
#foobar2000 is stuff ive downloaded from youtube#so nearly all vocaloid except for a few yonezu kenshi and kitani tatsuya#jams on toast is for torrented albums#which is hirasawa susumu and serani poji#bc i want to listen to the songs in album order but also shuffled by album. which jams on toast is built for#flacbox is for my game ost collection. 617 files in there#it has nice organization and im too lazy to convert flac to mp3/wav/ogg/whatever so its perfect#- neo

weirds me out sometimes knowing i have music in my music collection that i know doesn't exist online anywhere. wtf is up with that.
#like yeah i have quite a bit that i know isn't on spotify#but i also used to be really into the niche vocaloid community (where songs had like 500 views max)#and some of them i downloaded onto my phone to listen to them later and then the artists vanished from the internet#freaks me out sometimes#and is also the reason i back up my music collection in so many different places#reminding me bc im reorganizing my music hoard since it's in a new mp3 player now#it speaks#edit; oh yeah and how could i forget my favorite geology album that is just. Not Online. At All.

Sad she only got one album out before everything went to shit, but what's a girl to do?
This is a fake album cover for my dnd character, Helvia, and her fake band THREAT DISPLAY!!! Context for this piece and Helvia as a whole under the cut because once I start I can't stop talking about her <3
SO the campaign hasn't started yet, but Helvia is my character for a science fiction campaign. She's robot!!! Well I guess that's obvious now. BUT the basic gist: Helvia was manufactured as an industry-controlled and maintained electronic "punk" singer. When the project ended up making no money, everything related to it (including her), was abandoned. Three years later, she wakes up out of stasis with no clue what happened, an insane debt, and a failing memory. You will look at her !! Her full name is Helvia Cardinalis. This is just a genus of mantis it doesn't have any special meaning I just like bugs <3
-she has generated "background" memories of an entire life, but there's no telling which of those are real. I don't actually know which of them are real. My dm does!!! We'll be finding out together!!
-sometimes she uh. Doesn't know basic information. Whenever something she should reasonably know gets brought up I get to roll a flat d20 to do a "memory check", the checks getting harder the older the memory is. When she fails, she gets to lie or change the topic etc because she would rather DIE than admit anything is wrong with her.
-the album cover is kind of an intentionally really poor introduction of her character. She's more silly than anything? The entire project was meticulously micromanaged by the company that made her. The "novelty" and aesthetic of having a construct as their lead took forefront in its advertisement. There were two other members of THREAT DISPLAY!!! But she has no memory of them because they were considered comparatively SO unimportant to advertising and to her that they have gone... forgotten.
-Helvia herself is. A real character alright!!! Based entirely in what a corporation thinks a "cool alternative girl" is, she's impulsive, selfish, and just. So fucking stupid. She's firmly a "might makes right" type of person who was designed to appear counterculture but still ultimately serve and be fine with the status quo as long as it benefits her. She's going to do anything that grants her immediate satisfaction, and is obsessed with maintaining her image as "cool and above it all", even as her body is actively breaking down. She easily falls for flattery.
Notes about the piece: yeah I downloaded and used splatoon fonts for the nonsense text. I think I typed gay sex like twice I'll be real none of it translates to relevant information. I think there's something in there about how I hope it came across as an adequate parody of machine girl album covers (my main inspiration). The composition of the piece itself is meant to feel kind of skeevy and exploitative because well. It is!! It's drawing the fine line between 'wow this is so cool and counterculture of us wow!!!' and fetishistic? Etc etc missing the chestpiece as an analog for putting a woman topless on the cover. There's actually a separate sketch I did as a canonical "mock up" for the design that originally included the other members, treating them like props because they're so unimportant, before they were scrapped from the final design because they were That Unimportant.
Notes on Helvia's design: I pulled from a few sources for this!! Notably I looked at so many pictures of that band Tramp Stamps. Remember Tramp Stamps? I don't. They're like the direct analog I think to her. I also pulled from vocaloid designs!! Impractical, cool, kind of "anime" feel. This comes across most in her hair I think which is just so beautifully impractical. The yellow gloves are so stupid important to me actually they're kind of ugly but it's the only way her name ended up being important: helvia cardinalis (mantis) is Bright Yellow and raises its 'arms' in its threat display, which I wanted to pull from for potential posing of her!! So. Bright stupid yellow gloves <3 they're an easy way to tell her character apart too & mean I don't have to worry about drawing all the nonsense on her arms. The translucent skirt also comes from the mantis, sort of pulled from its wings!! Original concepts for her included synthetic skin rotting away but her design was already more complicated than I normally go for and we ultimately ended up realizing her being openly and visibly a construct was important for her image in her music career so it worked out well! She is at least missing an eyeball :] doesn't affect vision since the mechanics are still in place but I guess she just gets that fun sans glow socket <3 her outfit is meant to look simultaneously cool, vaguely expensive, but also super super cheap?? Overall I'm happy with the fact that she looks both cool and really stupidly impractical in that classic 2000s deviantart oc way <3 it's important to me! Ultimately:
#Palart#robot character#robot art#robot oc#my art#character art#art#dnd character#dnd art#dnd oc#oc: helvia#cw suggestive#? pretty. idk I've stared at this too long to know anymore#described by me#synth.solo#I think I've talked about her before a little bit but <3 she's just all the tropes I like jammed into one character I refuse to apologize#accidentally started the draft on this blog instead of my art blog so oops guess it's here now!!

Fave track: That's My Floor
My neighbours maybe do not like vocaloid or Perfume as much as I do but I think I'm about to go through another childish phase and use them to wake me up every morning...
Fave track: Perfume by Perfume, Music Like Magic by OSTER Project
City Girl released a new proper song!! It's adorable and I'm still forever grateful for all their lo-fi that I have downloaded for studying.

Theme Announcement for the March 2024 Vocaloid Song Tournament
It is once again time for a Vocaloid song tournament! I was thinking that we had several months in a row dedicating tournaments to specific Vocaloids, we should take a break from that. In fact, I wanted a tournament where I leave the songs competing up to chance. That means the theme for this month are Vocaloid songs that came up when I hit "shuffle"!
The following are rules that I set in place when shuffling the Vocaloid songs I had downloaded and determining the competitors:
Unknown Mother Goose by wowaka and Evil Food Eater Conchita by mothy are ineligible to compete on the basis of them winning two tournaments each.
There will be no more than 5 songs by the same Vocaloid producer competing, so that other songs by different producers have a fighting chance.
Songs used by all existing vocal synths (i.e. Vocaloid, SynthV, CeVIO, UTAU, etc.) are allowed to compete. Remember that I use "Vocaloid" as an umbrella term.
Album exclusive songs without an official PV are eligible to compete.
Original songs only. No covers unless they are made by the same producer as the original.
80 songs have been shuffled and selected to compete in this month's tournament starting next week, March 10th at 7 PM CT. As such, please do not be too upset if any of your favorite songs did not make the cut. There will still be off-season polls with songs from last month's tournament daily at 2 PM CT, so please continue to vote, reblog, spread harmless propaganda, and have fun! :)

the heavenly yard blog infomine, part 2: uploading Daughter of Evil, collaboration, new songs, and karaoke
I wanna make clear again these posts are NOT translations of mothy's blog. They are me reading his blog and summarizing or paraphrasing the info in them.
11 August 2008 ~ 1 December 2008
---August 2008---
11th
-he's entering regret message into the 20th VOCALOID album
15th
-back to Daughter of Evil discussion, and mothy's thoughts on finishing the song.
-mothy was very disappointed at how much of the plot he wrote had to get cut in the finished product. this led to him having an idea!
-he's being coy about it but essentially when he decided to make Servant of Evil, he went back and adjusted some things in Daughter of Evil to foreshadow the twin switch.
16th
Page 1
-mothy describes his tribulations in getting the Daughter of Evil PV made. he wanted it to look nice, so him drawing it was out.
-He tried finding some illustrations on Piapro but there wasn't much to be found in the way of "Medieval Rin" pictures. However, this does remind him that a lot of uploaders will recruit illustrators on Piapro by uploading their work and then tagging it "illustrations wanted", so he decides to do the same.
-The only problem is that he's practically a nobody at this point so he's unlikely to get a lot of takers.
Page 2
-mothy again has to tell people that he is NOT doing karaoke unless Joysound contacts him on their own because he doesn't want to go to the hassle.
-also too busy to reply to emails
19th
-this entry has a lot of cute emojis in it
-Though mothy was expecting it to take a long time for someone to illustrate the song, Ichika wound up making him one pretty much immediately. Mothy looks into her and sees some of her other work on NicoNico (including her PV for Cantarella, which is most well known). Naturally he is overjoyed and immediately starts work on making the PV with the illustration.
-Funnily enough, he closed the illustration recruitment after that thinking no one else would bite and someone left a disappointed comment because they'd been drawing a picture for it too (he's very sorry about that)
31st
-mothy's working on a Rin and Len song, notes it's Miku's first year anniversary
---September 2008---
6th
-onto the making of the DoE PV. Mothy admits to being a novice in this area, with only Windows Movie Maker to work with. He put more work into it than his previous videos, wanting to grow his talents some, and then uploaded it.
17th
-mothy's finished his new song but he's going to upload it at a later date.
-Daughter of Evil might be getting distributed on MikuMoba (he says maybe because he has the wrong phone type to download it)
-Answers some questions. Says he's okay with people making doujin content and fan videos using art they made themselves, and asks they get permission from any other illustrators whose work they use.
-people are still asking him about karaoke. He MIGHT do karaoke.
24th
-mothy talks about how Daughter of Evil exploded in popularity after he uploaded it (he finally made the site's official ranking), which of course he was really excited about.
---October 2008---
1st
-mothy relates how he got a really swelled head from Daughter of Evil getting in the ranking only for it to fall off the next day. Still, the song outperformed his expectations going in, so he was happy for that.
-He decided to focus on making the next song (incidentally, Daughter of Evil's views went up after he uploaded Servant). He suggests that Daughter of Evil's popularity is what gave him the motivation to keep going.
-This concludes his comments on Daughter of Evil's production, though there's still more to tell (which he may cover when talking about Servant of Evil, if he ever does)
6th
-mothy finally uploads his new song, which is Tale of Abandonment on a Moonlit Night
-Naturally the video was done by Ichika. He's been wanting to try doing a "Hansel and Gretel" theme with Rin and Len, and so did it here. He does hint at the song being part of a broader story, but doesn't say what that story is.
-Though there are commenters who want mothy to go into his making of Servant of Evil, he's not sure he will because A) he already talked about the plot concepts in it with Daughter of Evil, and B) he worries he'll look egotistical spending all his blog time talking about how a novice like him got popular (I think).
-Some people have asked him if he could teach them composing. He admits to being a bit green in that area as well and suggests they ask someone else.
-again confirms doujins are fine.
7th
-uploaded Abandonment's mp3 and karaoke to Piapro
9th
-mothy's grateful that people really like Abandonment, he's gotten a lot of views.
-He got interviewed by something called the Yamaha Mook series ("Let's Enjoy VOCALOID"? idk at a glance it looks like some kind of Japanese sheet music magazine). It also has some comments from Ichika.
10th
-He talks a bit more about Abandonment. He has a slightly roundabout way of saying it but he seems to have based it on the Grimm Fairytales version of Hansel and Gretel specifically rather than any later version.
-he mainly used RinLen act 1, but also used act2 in areas where act1 wouldn't cooperate with him. This song required a lot of adjustment. Melodically he feels it's closer to his earlier work before he made the Daughter of Evil songs, which he personally prefers.
15th
-he entered the ranking again
16th
-He talks about illustrations for his videos here, and how Abandonment is the first time he's actually commissioned someone to draw the art for one (incidentally, I didn't know that Regret Message's video was done using a stock photo)
-He was nervous that Ichika wouldn't go for it, but she was happy to work with him, so he's grateful for that (moreover, he was just expecting her to make an illustration for it, she was the one who went to the trouble of making a full video with that illustration, which impressed him greatly).
-mothy added lyrics using Premier Elements (which he bought recently)
29th
-He's been busy working on a collaboration so his blog got put on hold for a bit.
-His upcoming Rin song is part of that collaboration (pretty sure he's talking about South North Story)
-He'll be attending VOCALOID Master 6 to promote the CD that this collaboration song will be on.
-He asks people to be patient on the karaoke front but suggests they register on Joysound for it.
-Also says he's okay with people performing his songs non-commercially like in a school recital or something.
-I think in his last comment he's responding to Ichika for something, so without seeing what she said I'm not 100% sure what his reply means, sorry.
31st
Page 1
-Yep, his collaboration is South North Story with uniMemoP (I believe all the collaboration for this song and others on the CD it's for is being done on RinLenSNS), talks about upload schedule etc
Page 2
-the karaoke versions of Daughter, Servant, and Regret Message are in the running for Joysound, but they need to be voted in.
---November 2008---
3rd
-he seems to have installed a piapro player as a widget on the blog? (I can't find it so idk if it stopped working at some point after this post)
5th
-he's getting a lot of votes on JOYSOUND, with servant getting the most so far.
-he bought some books on digital music making, and also MEIKO and KAITO.
-thanks people for the votes and has two responses I can't really understand without context (one is about the player? i think?)
10th
-releases the crossfade for cheeRfuL, the CD with South North Story on it.
-more commentary response. Joysound is still getting votes. I believe he comments here on how working with KAITO and MEIKO is coming along (they're hard to use).
16th
-poor Regret Message is getting left behind in the Joysound voting.
25th
-he'll be uploading South North Story soon.
-as said earlier, he'll be at VOCALOID Master6. It's his first time going.
-Regret Message is still floundering in Joysound
28th
Page 1
-South North Story is up
Page 2
-mothy talks a bit about his participation on the cheeRfuL album and his collaboration on South North Story. It's interesting to hear some of his thoughts on it but it's not really related to Evillious so unfortunately I won't be summarizing it here.
-I will say the song was originally going to be called "Kimagure Kousaten (Whimsical Intersection)" but he changed it to reference RinLenSNS. He also wanted the lyrics to reflect the nature of the collaboration itself.
-Someone called "Deko(maru)" did the illustrations I think?
-Tale of Abandonment on a Moonlit Night has entered the hall of fame.
---December 2008---
1st
Page 1
-mothy talks about having attended VOCALOID master 6, what his weekend was like, etc. It sounds like he had a great time and things went well.
-He was a little overwhelmed and there were some things he missed out on, and people he missed out on talking to due to some miscommunication and whatnot, but that's okay. He'll be prepared next time.
Page 2
-it's karaoke time all three of the songs he submitted got voted in :)
-his other songs may get in sometime in the future.
Page 3
-he thanks everyone for voting on JOYSOUND, and says he'll talk with uniMemoP about when and where to upload the MP3 for South North Story
And with the JOYSOUND arc having come to a close, I think that's a good point to stop. More to come when I feel like reading it.

None of you were here for UTAU drama involving American kids recreating the voice of like, Michael Jackson for fun in JPN abandonware in 2015 and it shows. People have been making freeware synths to imitate famous people without their consent for ages with fucking freeware. The problem goes beyond AI.
Just some random ones from a precursory search:
Michael Jackson UTAU + VB
Rick Astley UTAU (This is unlisted, since they know they're doing something worth flaming them for, but duckduckgo could link me to it (?))
"Unreleased" Michael Jackson UTAU "Maikeru Jakusan" who appears to be abandoned since 2015. It says it's unreleased, but you can find downloads for the VBs on the Facebook page in here.
Michael Jackson UTAU video from 2017
And that's only the ones that haven't erased themselves entirely from the internet. It was definitely a big deal back in the day that people (see: hobbyists) (see: kids) would make UTAUs out of random celebrities without much thought into the ethics of the matter given that they were 13. They'd get flamed and they'd take the thing down. Like. You don't need neural nets to do this shit, you need freeware and free time, both of which kids unsupervised online can easily get.
Meanwhile, professional AI speech synth products DO obtain consent from their singers to train their synthesizers. From Solaria's (SynthV AI) product listing page: "While a standard voice is recorded as brief phrases sung at a static pitch, SOLARIA is based on entire song samples from her voice provider Emma Rowley." What they're referring to is how Vocaloid and normal SynthV banks are made: a singer sings syllables at one pitch with no vibrato, etc. and these are combined to form syllables and tuned by the voice engine and the computer.
Even something like a SynthV AI voice requires isolated vocal samples from the VP's songs, and to get those at a quality to use in a product you're selling, you... basically have to get them from the singer. Since differences in microphones between albums will give the product a different tone, I'm not convinced the singer still didn't have to sing fresh samples for them in a studio for this.
Stop using AI as a catchall word for "technology I don't understand and don't like". Fearmongering about what AI is capable of HELPS companies sell their AI products. Spreading misinformation about "unique" capabilities of AI, like imitating peoples' voices without their consent, helps them too. You are doing their advertising for them.
"You aren't OK with AI Voices but you're OK with Miku????"
First off, never insult my dearest friend Miku like that ever again.
Second, Miku isn't stealing the voices of other people. That's the issue with AI voices. They're stealing other people's voices. Miku is her a funky little hologram with a funky little hologram voice.
Big difference.

Look what I found in this old relative's closet, locked away and covered in dust - it was the PS3 Slim I used to share with my cousin! He bought it since the one we used before wasn't ours. We hadn't seen it in years, and I was thrilled to see it still turned on. I gave it a quick “cleaning” because man, that thing had its own ecosystem. It's still kinda dusty, though, like the old english keyboard I found.
I don't remember where, when or how it got dented on the left side, neither does my cousin. It probably was pretty funny.
To my surprise, it had almost all the games I remembered, including two of my favourites: Tony Hawk's Project 8 and Project Diva! I felt like I had a little piece of that 2000's nostalgia in my hands. It also had all the anime OST, Vocaloid tracks and punk rock I used to listen to back then. I was kinda of a product of that era, huh.
I remember my favourite song during that time was Paranoid Android by Radiohead and my favourite album was Favourite Worst Nightmare by Arctic Monkeys. It makes me smile looking back at how I listened to music for hours without really playing anything on the PS.
Back then I used to dress very “boy-ish” so my parents didn't like me playing videogames that much since they though it wasn't very femenine, but I did anyways since my cousin was always asking me to play with him, and most importantly teaching me a lot about videogames.
Sadly, I couldn't find the anime I had downloaded on it, back in the day I used the PS3 to watch anime and listen to music since I had to unplug the PC to plug the TV and PS3, so I just moved a bunch of stuff to the console. I still can picture that 240p video quality in my mind.
Despite the lack of anime, playing games with my cousin took me back to the good old days. He's leaving the country soon, so he decided to give the PS3 to me as a gift. I can't wait to spend some quality time with it, especially since it's been ages since I've ever touched the thing. Sometimes I miss my little Vocaloid phase, even though it's a bit shameful. Back when I used to play anything with online on it and chat on IRC... IRC? When was the last time you heard that name? I feel old.
I got the chance to play Project Diva (i lost my skill). We played CoD:MW3 (yes, we were too lazy to make a profile to play Survival) and Tony Hawk's Project 8 (i'm actually pretty good at it still!)
Time does fly when you're having fun, huh?

The circle is still active, but Rin (the composer) has been focused on original works. Mostly vocaloid/Synth V stuff.
They released a crossfade for their newest album this month on niconico
The likely answer is that Rin may have grown tired of it. It's a lot of work to arrange every song in a game/album. I respect the amount they did. (The real answer may be buried on their twitter somewhere. Their livedoor blog is gone.)
I do wish Rin would re-upload the older House Sets onto their site The free downloads from Melonbooks have expired so not all of them are available anymore.
Anyone know what happened to Kuroneko Lounge? Like why is there only one song in the idola set?
