Hey Jay! Recently I have found myself back in the world of veterinary medicine after taking a few years to decide what I wanted to do and finish my undergrad degree in Management instead of Animal Science which is what I was pursuing when I started my college journey. At the age of 27 (for the next two months) I have decided that I do in fact want to pursue my dream of applying to vet school and I have been trying to connect with folks who have experienced applying and I was wondering if you would be open to sharing your experience with me. Hope you're doing well recovering your knee! Talk soon,
GT
Ahahhahhhhaahhh you poor naive FOOL!
I'm just kidding - we're happy to have you back in the field!
But I won't lie to you, the journey to vet school is butts. I'm still on it, still wanting to go the distance, but it's stiiillll butts.
So GT, first things first, RESEARCH YOUR SCHOOLS. You gotta know their minimum requirements, their prerequisites, their DUE DATES, their additional fees (it's all about additional fees), and anything else you can get from their websites, emails, and VMCAS.
Ahahhahhhhaahhh you poor naive FOOL!
I'm just kidding - we're happy to have you back in the field!
But I won't lie to you, the journey to vet school is butts. I'm still on it, still wanting to go the distance, but it's stiiillll butts.
So GT, I’m gonna give you a bulleted list of what I think are the most important things you need to know before and while applying for veterinary school starting in the 2024 cycle.
Set up an account at VMCAS (aka Veterinary Medical College Application Service) The site doesn’t open until January (when the application cycle for 2024 starts), but keep the site bookmarked and check back frequently so you can stay updated.
On that note, check out AAVMC (American Association of Veterinary Medical Colleges) Here you can get the lowdown on ALL the veterinary schools, which can inform your decision on which to apply to
The most important information you are going to want to focus on; 1. DUE DATES - for all applications, fees, and coursework a. Put them in your calendar, on sticky notes, on your forehead - whatever you need to do to not miss them. Once they’re passed, you’re out of luck 2. Minimum prerequisite course requirements (coursework and grades) a. Also, know that prerequisite coursework expires after ten years. It's BS and I’m dealing with that right now ugh 2. Letters of recommendations
You will need at least three - no exceptions - and at least one needs to come from a licensed veterinarian
All your previous academic records, relevant experience, volunteer work, and anything else that is even slightly animal/veterinary related that can beef up your application
You will have to dig back through your old transcripts (you’ll need to get an official one) and get all your old coursework - it is very important to get your grades and courses correct/exact on the application
They’re gonna ask for very specific dates, hours, and numbers so just do the best you can in documenting this
The next part of the application(s) is all about personal essays. The standard application has its own base essays and then each individual application for each school has its own essays.
Spend the most time on this. Every admissions person I have talked to says that the essays are where it’s at. Try to make yourself stand out from the crowd - explain your reasonings for wanting to be a vet beyond “I like animals,” and do your best to tell your story.
Sidenote: If you plan to apply to the two colleges in Texas, there is an entirely DIFFERENT application called the TMDSAS (Texas Medical & Dental Schools Application Service) you will have to make an account for, fill out, have your letter of recommendation sent to, and pay for. It's very annoying because Texas thinks it's just so special. (I live in Texas I can say these things)
I wanna say that’s everything? I’m sure there is more, but the listed websites help a lot too.
I also want to say, don’t get discouraged. Most people don’t get in on their first try. Not saying you won’t! It’s just statistics. So if you don’t get in, keep trying! Lord knows we need more vets!
Best of luck to you and if you need any more help, you know where to find me!

Essay for VMCAS
A team rejoiced that a fractious kitty is back to his old ways, because they know he's feeling better. A Doctor, seeing a family in pain because they couldn't afford treatment, just couldn't stand by and let the terrible come. She chose to pay hundreds out-of-pocket, so the family can love their dog longer. A puppy died; gets brought back to life because a nurse and a doctor wouldn't quit. The week after, on a recheck it is as spry as any puppy could be. A fearful dog listens to my sooth and trusts me to keep her safe as treatments occur. A parent is shocked that a cat licked churu off my finger. "She's never done that before." One of the best things I ever did with my life happened before I ever stepped foot in veterinary medicine, but long after I knew it was what I wanted to do with my life. A friend and I saw a stray kitten, congested, with an eye, glued shut with mucus - what I now know to have likely been a severe URI. We took this kitten to his place, gave it a bath and began searching for someone who could adopt it and afford a Vet. A few weeks later, Fortuna, or “Tuna” for short, was able to keep the eye and was living a happy life. I noticed a mammary mass on a dog 2 years into my first hospital that was missed on the physical; the next week the mass was removed, and from then on no one could stop me checking my patients. During the worst of covid, a pair of kitties came to the hospital to board; Atticus and Romeo; Atticus was my favorite kitty. The carriers were labeled wrong, and I knew Atticus was a kitty with severe heart disease, who needed atenolol and Romeo was a healthy kitty. I insisted on the fact, leading to the parent being called and confirming I was right. I didn’t care about being right, I didn’t want the mistake to cost a life, possibly two.
I do not have one singular defining moment that led me to want to be in veterinary medicine. I have known for a long time that I want to be a Doctor, and I have recurring moments that reassure and reaffirm me through doubt that this is my field. I am simply finding my way to the position where I can do the best for it. I still second guess myself constantly. I wonder if I’m cut out for it, but not once have I been able to picture myself anywhere else. I spent a year in a hospital, full of employees sick with compassion fatigue and I couldn’t give in. I advocated the way I must. It is easy to feel unappreciated in a field where the patients you aim to heal, fear you, and the pet-parents you're trying to help think you're money hungry; and the majority of the employees aren't paid what they should be; and yet, I want to continue doing this. I want to continue helping. I want to continue reminding people why we chose to join this field. I want to give hope to the people who share my dream and are having an arduous path to it the way I am. You, Reader, didn't step into this field for any other reason than animals and/or the good people that help them. We're a lovely bunch, aren't we?

Spring 2023 Update
So, I was able to finish the fall semester with a 4.0, which is the first time I’ve ever achieved something like this! I took break to rest and celebrate, and now am back to the grind for the spring semester.
This semester I am taking three classes and TAing a lab portion for undergrads. My classes are: Physiology of Reproduction, Ruminant Nutrition, and Animal Physiology I. I am TAing undergrad Swine Techniques.
This semester I am going completely digital! I am taking “messy” notes on my Surface Pro before revising on my iPad with GoodNotes, which I’m already in love with!
I’m hoping to be more active on here this semester as having a studyblr does help with motivation, and since I’m going to school and working on my VMCAS (vet school application), I will need all the motivation I can get.

How delulu am I for Vet School?
I start by asking this because I really can't let go of this feeling of wanting to become a Veterinarian. I also feel delusional by how I applied to so many schools with my past VMCAS application, I had barely written most of my experience and the one thing all the schools could heavily look at me with was my poor GPA. I did seek counseling with one of the university's counselors, getting a master's to focus on keeping a good GPA. I still would even consider another Bachelor's... BUT I would definitely need seek more counseling for this. Going back to being delulu about veterinary school, I really have considered other areas where I think I could be more comfortable with, let that be a scientist who advocates for conservation, park ranger who is mostly inclined to conservation and wildlife, zoo keeper, research assistant to other conservation projects... yes to all those things but none of them feel like dream jobs to me. I would LOVE to have that experience but would only be satisfied for a short period.
Working at the veterinary clinic also helped me be delusional for this career. Assisting the veterinary technicians and the vets I was able to only experience what happens in a veterinary clinic but also drove me to think more of the veterinary-client-patient relationship. This relationship is of heavily importance and is the relationship, that I believe, drives so many veterinarian's and their staff to burnout and the compassionate fatigue. I for a fact, did experience this a few times with some cases and have been telling everyone that I love that experience, hence why I think I'm delusional about this career. I have accepted that in this career there will be things out of my control, I can express the best treatment plan and owners may not agree with it, patients may be hard to handle, clients will not follow up with treatment plans and come back asking why it didn't work, clients did bring back the patients and were able to successfully recover, so many things I come with the career and I can't even fathom thinking of different career. Because with this career choice I would be satisfied with myself for trying and giving the client-patient the best service I could. I would also add to this delulu helping wildlife and conservation... I said I don't myself in this area, but I mostly referred to it as less than doctor. I would love to be a veterinarian that is involved in the conservation of species and education of them through the zoo's. My delusional dream job is to be a veterinarian at the Australia Zoo. I could go to other zoo's but Steve Irwin sparked my interest in exotic animals as a child. I sigh just thinking about the show and how I vision myself as a vet in a zoo, working on a lion, crocodiles, sea turtles, rhinos, giraffes, kangaroos, good God, OKAPIS! I don't know how I could explain this delusion to people that don't know me. I am so thankful for the friends and family that never get tired of listening to my delusional dreams.

Applying to grad school
The grad school applications are a bit overwhelming. I’ve detailed some of the things I wish I had known before starting my application in my blog, particularly aimed at nontrad students. Hopefully you might get something from it!

Next steps for my application:
1) Complete the short essays for both UF and LSU
2) Mail in supplemental fees for TAMU and LSU
3) Bug my doctor about submitting my rec letter.

I submitted my application for TAMU today! I also submitted the supplemental apps for both TAMU and UF. I’ll find out in November-December if I get to interview with the schools!
