🗣 NY Liberty are the MF Champs!!! 💍🏆

The kid in me who waited for this moment in 1997 when she was 9. This feeling is surreal, indescribable. But now I know what it feels like. Elated beyond words. NY is a basketball city. The mecca of streetball. We take this shit serious. But always seem to fall short or far from reach of winning the big chip. In the midst of that, we never give up on our teams. Y'all know our phrase: "It's iight! Knicks got it next year!" Same with the Liberty.

I watched this team tip-off for the first ever WNBA game against the Sparks 8 days after Jordan and the Bulls took home more rings. The year prior was the '96 Olympics win for USA women and their episode on Martin. This was must-watch tv. Eyes fucking glued to the screen. I just knew my short ass would play in this league one day lol. For Spoon, Lobo, Kym, Sophia, VJ, Trena, Kisha, Sue, Blades, Crys, and Cass to set the foundation here.

The Liberty garnered fans from the 5 boroughs. Played with heart. The Garden went from being packed to damn near empty during those rough seasons years later. I vividly remember being at the first (and last 🙃) outdoor WNBA game at Arthur Ashe. I was fucking hot from the heat and that score. (At least win that one.) A decade later, the new front office direction and big move to Barclays came. For Joe Tsai, Sandy, these players, Ellie 😏, and entire organization to make the adjustments needed in their respective areas to seal this victory for this state. Baybee. This shit is a Cinderella dream come true.

The definition of a team sport. Passion, trust, grit, mental agility, and teamwork. Fatigue got them best of the Liberty (mostly) and the Lynx. Stewie and Sabrina led them as far as they could. Running on fumes. Benijah owned game 2. That knee is blessed. Fiebich is a defense machine always looking to pick your pocket and make the best scoring decision. (To be drafted by the Sparks then traded to Chicago but neither team contacted her so NY made the home call. Come to BK, love.)

Sabally and KT are energy boosters and magnets making great decisions defensively and offensively who can change the trajectory of a game with their aura. (Sabally like Betnijah dealt with injuries this year.) Jonquel changes the trajectory of a game with her presence, when she locks in on keeping the ball high, and them sexy 3s 😮‍💨. Sloot had a solid season in the beginning before her mom passed. Her return on the night of the Commissioner's Cup still makes me sad because I know the team really wanted to win that game for her.

Lynx took the cup, but the Liberty 🗽 took them MF rings. It's funny cuz I'm a Lynx fan (they played their heart out) and love a lot of players from other teams, just not when they're playing the Liberty. Same with the Aces. Love 'em. But home team love first, baby. Some of our former players showed up tonight for this championship ☺️. I ain't even gon hold you. I wanted to see Becky there 🙃. Just a pop up lol. I'll forever love this game and this league.

old age with the hula dancers welcome but mostly i try not to let anyone die!

2. Alpha CC or Maxis Match?

i’m somewhere in the middle, i have a game thats more heavy on the semi realistic content and another that’s more maxis match-y.

3. Do you cheat when your sims gain weight?

i wouldn’t say i cheat, but i do have them work out a lot to change back

4. Do you use move objects?

of course but i usually wait until the end of the decorating stage to do that.

5. Favorite mod?

i don’t use a lot of mods but i guess whatever one adds custom sliders or at least the bodyshop sliders to regular CAS

6. First expansion/game/stuff pack you got?

Well my simming career started back in the sims 1 release days and I got double deluxe base game followed quickly by unleashed shortly after it’s original release.

7.  Do you pronounce “live mode” like aLIVE or LIVing?

i am very partial to Malle, Echo, Abba, and my legacy founder VJ!

in the past yes but i never really did much with her. there might be a saved file of her stashed away somewhere...

very few outgoing points, plenty of nice points, a good handful of active

umm i tend to make lots of blonde sims but not with EA’s yellow blonde...so Brown I guess??

i’m more in it for sim creation and decorating that playing or building.

yeah i’ve got a whole downloads tag worth of it but i wouldn’t say i am good at it and i don’t do it very often.

i’d like to think you’re all my friends but a few are closer/more interactive than others

TS2 forever, with a special space for sims 1 in my heart

no, not really my thing

i tried dabbling in sims machinima at once point way back in the day, even had a couple voice actors record lines for the start of my little story. i made a little prologue video that i posted on youtube. not sure if it’s still around in some dusty corner of the internet....

20. How has your “sims style” changed throughout your years of playing?

while i have embraced and started leaning a little more maxis match since coming to simblr wayyyyy long ago, i would say it hasn’t changed too much, it’s still a mix of everything that i like and falls victim to my current mood and whims, but it’s maybe a little more cohesive now. i’d like to think someone could recognize twofee style decor or sim.

i don’t need it for sims as my install is off the discs but i think it’s twoffee

22. Who’s your favorite cc creator?

everyone who makes cc!! no way could you narrow that down!

23. How long have you had a simblr?

my archive says January of 2013 is when i finally gave up lurking!

24. How do you edit your pictures?

wow it’s been so long since i’ve done it, but i’ll crop, run a super old action i got from another popular simblr, then resize and be done. if i feel fancy i might add a little boarder shadow thing. but really not much.

25. What expansion/game/stuff pack do you want next?

i just want more content of any variety. new hairs and clothes, new decor items, floors and walls, conversions from other games, new recolors of everything. maxis match and semi realistic. or even bringing back some long lost content. I have an entire folder of 2000s content on an old external HD that I would love to just plug into a fresh game folder and see whats in there. it was all stuff i downloaded to save while i was in college and not able to play but didn’t want to lose or forget.

Programming Update

With the con just three months away, we’re preparing for a weekend jam-packed with vids, panels, activities and socialising! The full schedule will be released closer to the con, but we can now share some news about what you can expect to find in it. First of all, vidshows! Look out soon for VJs calling for vid suggestions and possibly premieres. We’ll also have panels including: Anatomy of a Vid Aspects of Aspect Ratio Women Behind the Camera Year in Vidding A major update - this year we’re trying something new with the group vidding workshop! The workshop is a big part of the VidUKon experience, but our new hybrid format presents some additional challenges compared to a fully offline or fully online workshop. So this year, we’re taking the workshop back online, moving it to a pre-con challenge with a longer timeframe, and making some other changes that we hope will retain the chaotic spirit of the workshop while making both running it and participating in it a bit simpler. Watch this space for more detail soon. And finally, we’ve chosen a theme for this year’s vidder-submitted themed show! The theme is Antagonism. Whether it’s nemeses, enemies to lovers, villains or feuds, we want your vids all about hostility, rivalry, contention and opposition. More details coming soon on exactly how to submit. The deadline will be May 6. Premieres are particularly encouraged but back-catalogue vids are very welcome too.  Fearless. Three stories. 

Bob Pittman was my boss (I wrote about Bob as one of my mentors here), the one who gave me a lifetime career in television, when I was positive I was going to be a record producer. Like great bosses can sometimes do, he drove me nuts on more than one occasion (God knows how many times I annoyed him!), but more often than not gave me the rope to hang myself (thanks Bob!). But over the years I watched him succeed over and over and I finally have had enough distance to see...

...that Bob is fearless. A fearless competitor, fearless leader, fearless mentor, probably a fearless flyer. It’s one of the many qualities of Bob’s that’s brought him from radio and MTV to the heights of media.

I had a first hand look on this numerous times, with Bob as a boss, then a client, and finally as a friend. Here are three stories that not only have stuck with me for the past 40 years but have affected my own behavior, but personal and professional ever since.

1.

Very early on at MTV Networks, we had a management offsite meeting in Montauk. I’m not much of a joiner and not a drinker, but one night I found myself in a packed car of party co-workers; seven folks in a car meant for five. I was stuffed in the back with Bob and someone sprawled across our laps. 

You have to know how isolated Montauk is, and at night there are no streetlights, and here we were barreling through the darkest of roads. Suddenly, Bob leaned forward and put his hands over the driver’s eyes.

“We did this all the time at home in Mississippi. No one ever got hurt!”

I wasn’t so sure his luck was going to hold.

The woman on my lap leaned in close and said, “That’s what I like about Bob. He’s fearless.”

Bob was 25, I was 27, he was my boss as the head programmer at The Movie Channel, a start up, early cable channel owned by Warner Amex Satellite Entertainment (WASEC), a joint venture between two huge corporations, Warner Communications and American Express. Every expense was heavily scrutinized for efficiency and effectiveness, and my first production assistant was brought on as a freelancer only. He was creative, smart and funny, if a little disorganized.

A few months in he up and quit. “I’ve got an eye disease, I’ll be legally blind in a few months. I’m going to go live with my parents and I’ve sold my comics.” He’d been collecting since he was in grade school.

It came out that his vision was kind of like being underwater with eyes open and the degeneration would stop at a certain point. Reading was possible but only with a machine that could take books and papers and blow the type up by several inches. Insurance would pay for it, but he was a freelancer with no coverage.

“Well, I’m not going to let you quit. Your problem isn’t your vision, you’re just a little messy and undisciplined. Let's see what I can do.”

Back in the day, corporate health insurance wasn’t as computerized and organized –or quite as necessary– as it is now and maybe I could pull a weasel move and back date him as an employee for health coverage and get him his machine. I didn’t know Bob all that well, we’d met through my first media mentor, but he seemed like a real corporate type –at least compared to me– and he’d have to clear it.

I held my breath and launched into the PA’s issue.

“It’s simple, backdate his employment, get him insurance.”

The PA stayed, got his gizmo, and legally blind or not went on to become the company’s worldwide creative director for sister channel Nickelodeon.

Bob wasn’t a corporate weasel after all, he was a fearless warrior for his people.

A month into my gig at The Movie Channel, Bob announced The Music Channel and asked me to lead the creative efforts of the channel-to-be. He had a clear vision of a format that would be, exclusively, music videos 24 hours a day, interrupted occasionally by “VJs.”

“So,” I asked Bob, “what else will be in the clock? Jingles, like Top 40 radio?” I hoped not, but I couldn’t really picture anything else.

“No! Are you kidding? NO!!! We’ll do animated logos.” Remember, we didn’t have a name no less a logo.

He could tell I was a little confused. “What?”

“Imagine this.” He was already sounded triumphant. “There’s an animated cow grazing around. All of sudden! An axe comes of of nowhere and cuts off its head. The head falls to the ground, veins spurting blood. The cow vomits! And in the vomit is our logo!!!”

Wow, I thought. Bob will let me do whatever I want!

Bob’s creative fearlessness was the beginning of a change in television that would reverberate for decades.

By the way, we’d never produce the vomiting cow, but...

Sat here locked down, like everyone else, I am looking through the window at a beautiful day. This is turning into one of the nicest years weather wise we have ever seen and the full funfair industry is non existant. I know some that are struggling with the lockdown, it's not just financial, but the mental strains are starting to tell, after a friend took his own life at the start of the year, a lot of friends actually started talking more about mental health. What became clear was just how fragile some people are, with an awful lot of friends I know personally on anti-depressants to control their moods. The strain of the lock down is starting to open some cracks up and its worrying. 6 Years Of War With it being VE day I have sat and thought about what they suffered. Almost 6 years of being at war. Nutcase German pilots visiting nightly with the express intention of dropping a bomb on your head. Loved ones serving in the forces, away from home sometimes for years at a time, and you had no idea from one minute to the next whether they were safe, or some crazed little Japanese man was trying to stick a sword up their harris. Don't forget, we didn't have email, Whatsapp, Facebook or mobile phones then. A husband or father could have been killed, and it might well have been weeks, if not months before you found out. I should imagine every knock on the door, or visit from the postman became a psychological ordeal. Funfair In The War Years To a large extent the funfair started the war as it is now, closed. Eventually the government came up with the idea of holidays at home to boost morale, and allowed some limited operations. Some enterprising operators managed to set up inside buildings and operated throughout the period. In many ways it was actually easier for them than dealing with the virus. With radar and air raid sirens you did have a bit of warning that Franz and his Heinkel were coming to get you. The virus doesn't afford us the same courtesy. Today This should have been one of the busiest days in our calendar, not just the traditional funfairs, but the corporate hire market was well booked up to boot. Obviously nothing will actually go ahead, and for a change we will all be sat doing very little on a bank holiday. I saw an interview on morning television the other day where the gentleman being interviewed had a clear acrylic 'Tommy' sat on his desk. He was asking people to put them in the window for VE day, the funds raised from making them directly supports ex armed forces. Unfortunately it was too late to order one for today, but we have placed an order and will put it in the office window in tribute. As bad as this virus is, I don't think it can compare to charging into machine gun fire on the beaches of Normandy, or trying to hold Japanese Banzai charges back in Kohima. They were a tough breed then, woman keeping the family together, little more than kids taking to the skies in Spitfires and Hurricanes to face overwhelming odds in the sky. Sailors on Arctic convoys, braving the twin terrors of wolf packs and weather. I think in the news recently, Captain Tom, sorry, as he has now become Colonel Tom, exemplifies just what Hitler was facing, poor simple silly sod to think that he had a chance against men like that. A debt of gratitude is owed to all who served 75 years ago. As the NHS front-line are our hero's today, they are our hero's of then. VE Day and VJ Day should never be forgotten.
