Spoilers ahead for Puss in Boots: The Last Wish

I can’t stop thinking about The Last Wish (go see it if you haven’t, seriously, it’s incredible) and I wanted to talk about a moment that I think carries a lot of meaning even though it’s easy to gloss over.

I want to talk about the moments before and after Puss draws his gatito blade against El Lobo del Muerte.

During Puss’s climactic duel with Death, the Wolf slashes Puss’s boot, bats away his hat, and knocks his sword out of his hand. The Wolf is destroying the symbols of the legend of Puss in Boots, stripping Puss’s mortality bare.

But Puss is no longer defenseless before Death. He has spent the movie’s runtime building bonds with other characters, finally letting others into his life, no longer walking alone as his legend demanded. His gatito blade, given to him by Kitty Softpaws, represents this development. Puss has cast aside his legend through learning the value of his life, and in doing so, he can stand against and block Death’s blows.

Ironically, Death’s attempts to take Puss early are the very catalyst for Puss’s success in redefining himself, symbolized by Death’s blocked blow allowing Puss to reclaim his symbols—his hat and sword—with their meaning now changed by the accompaniment of the gatito blade. The unstoppable weight of Death’s scythe has quite literally pushed Puss towards a new life.

The Last Wish is packed with moments of visual symbolism, but this one in particular is the standout to me, both because and in spite of its brevity.

#mouthwashing #anya mouthwashing #daisuke mouthwashing #swansea mouthwashing #curly mouthwashing #<— is this how character tagging works here lol #the visuals of this game are so good. the ps2 aesthetics mixed with a lot of memorable imagery #+ the way that the mechanics/structure of the game are deeply important to its narrative & themes #i.e. the use of pov switches the time jumps & the railroading—#these could have been just stylistic choices but here they are functional AND stylistic #the fact that you are railroaded into decisions…#while in other games this might feel frustrating/simplistic #here it only adds to the impending sense of dread and horror and disgust #especially when they’ve shown you an outcome and then send you back to inevitably be the cause of that outcome #the choice has already been made. it’s already been done.

#kingdom hearts #kh #kh kairi #kh xion #kh namine #i don't really feel proud of my own stuff usually but #i really think this is the drawing i'm most proud of from this past year!! it made me think 'oh maybe i can draw' haha #i'm still kinda bad with colors but something clicked with this one. and i feel like i got the sentimental feeling i wanted!#ooh but this project's about flower symbolism so ramble incoming:#protea symbolizes resilience transformation and diversity; hollyhock means 'please remember me.'#so my general theme was finding a sense of self.#these 3 have struggled with finding their own identity; they tend to get left behind both in-universe and in general plotwise #and naminé and xion both resemble kairi and were overshadowed by her memory. but i feel like all 3 have transformed into their own people #xion and naminé have their faces covered partially by hollyhock to show their wish to be remembered for who they are-#instead of the parts that they share with someone else #and the protea bouquets show how they each held on and resiliently grew into their own person despite it all #i put a little swervy path on the hill behind kairi to give that hopeful sense of growth and moving forward. it's a little hard to see #hopefully that makes sense! i really love symbolism but i think in visuals so i'm really bad with words #but gosh working with everyone on this project was so fun. it was like impossible not to get swept up by the team's hype for this zine #i need to hunt down everybody's work and rb it #ohh and everybody's flowers are so crisply drawn it's insane!! i think if i lined all these flowers and leaves i'd die haha #fan art #my art #project stuff

I’m a simple soul

I see a hot blooded trauma fueled man with an ego and daddy issues become an unwilling single mother who then steps up after multiple trials and errors to grow into a proper parent that fights tooth and nail for his daughter AND face said daddy issues head on for the betterment of his child thus reconciling and healing his own relationship with his father and bringing an enthusiastic grandpa into the mix
