you already know i adore your writing and am constantly in awe of your storytelling, but out of curiosity how did you plan your fic 'ice & blades'? it has such a specific technical aspect (knowing figure skating, specifically pairs, and the sport and global competitions themselves), as well as your portrayal of marinette which requires so much in depth knowledge and care re: neurodivergent people, the abuse she experienced, and her chinese culture. it feels like there's a lot of research that went into this, or it's in depth personal knowledge, and i'm guessing you're a fan of figure skating. i am wondering how much work went into preparing to write this work, or what you did to accurately refer to these things?

What a cool questionnnn!!! Thanks for asking it genuinely! I definitely did have to do a bunch of research as I lack a decent amount of knowledge when it comes to the vast majority of things haha. There's certainly a lot of room for error when browsing the internet for information (and I'm totally positive that more or less of the figure skating content in my fic is riddled with errors). I've been a fan of figure skating ever since I watched the video of Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir's Moulin Rouge skate at the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic Winter Games (which for some reason was only last year, and is actually ice dance not pairs figure skating). When researching figure skating I usually stick to official guides about program requirements, personal blogs of other skaters/fans (usually to reference specific elements and training schedules), and documentaries/books.

Additional things (such as culture, food, and history) are mostly from my own personal knowledge (from friends, acquaintances, or things I've learned throughout schooling). I have done my VERY best to research (and have asked friends from China) Chinese culture, traditions, and holidays as that is something that I'm generally unaware of. Definitely find learning about that stuff INCREDIBLY interesting though, and I thoroughly enjoy it!

As for Marinette being neurodivergent, I have to say that a lot of it comes from what I already know and some of my own personal experience. It's also been very helpful to have others give their two cents as well. Of course, if there's something I'm unsure of I'll do some research online (though, I'm a bit hesitant to use 'medical-ish' websites, and like to stick to blogs with personal insights).

As for the abuse that Marinette has gone through, it's genuinely (and I'm sad that this is the case) not very hard to find stories of people who have gone through the same thing. Unfortunately, nowadays there can be a lot of opportunities for young athletes to be taken advantage of, especially young women. You see problem areas in gymnastics, ballet, and figure skating (lots of sports that women are traditionally associated with), and it's heartbreaking. I think that's important to acknowledge, and that not all abuse is as extreme as Marinette's, though I'm certain that any abuse is undoubtedly impactful.

Basically, I just wanted to write a story about love (Marinette's love for figure skating, the way she comes to understand her capabilities of loving others through that medium, and just how the way she sees the world can be changed by building connections that foster self-discovery) and am now stuck with a giant doc of timelines, research, character stuff, and figure skating jargon.

BUT YEAH! Big into learning and researching things on my own. Love sitting on a mountain of knowledge that I probably won't be able to bring up in conversation ever LOL.

back on my virtue/moir bs from march of this year and i am much less hyperfixated than i was in the spring. can definitely say it is 90% due to 1) they’re hot and 2) they are crazy with the emotions< assuming/implied that this is acting. which in that case they are fucking amazing actors probably the best in the fucking world

scott moir in particular; i think he’s the one who’s like selling these over the top emotional expressions. also whoever is choreographing these dances is horny af because they are so like... intimate. i would never watch this with my mom you know? i fr think that tessa’s out of his league though, like he prolly has a legit crush on her but she doesn’t like him back

God bless whoever coined ‘cunniliftus’ for That Move in the Virtue/Moir Moulin Rouge routine because we were ALL THINKING IT and even the CBC commenters were like “oh nice they’ve changed it with the position of the knee, made the transition faster, which is better aesthetically” but hONESTLY we all realized that if they held that lift any longer it starts to give the impression that they’re both having more fun with it than is acceptable for an all-ages event.

I am once again doing monthly roundups of the books I've read in 2022. I've set a higher goal for myself this year: 58 books. I got off to a good start in January by reading a total of 6 books. I'm also doing the Popsugar Reading Challenge again because hey, why not?

Here's what I read in January:

1. On Top of Glass by Karina Manta

Karina Manta made history back in 2019 when her essay “I Can’t Hate My Body if I Love Hers” was published in the New York Times. Karina was the first female Team USA figure skater to come out as bisexual back in 2018.

Her memoir, On Top of Glass, follows up on her essay with the full story of her coming of age as a figure skater and her struggle to find acceptance in a sport that hasn’t always been welcoming. As a lifelong figure skating fan, I found this to be a fascinating read. I loved learning more about skating culture, training, and everything else. Manta’s writing style is lively and engaging. Even when she was struggling with anxiety and body image, she found her way to make a mark on the sport with her partner, Joe Johnson. Together, they became the first known ice dancers where both members of the team were LGBT and both came out while they were still competing. Fun fact: she also went to the prom with Jason Brown!

2. The Excalibur Curse by Kiersten White

This book is the conclusion of the Camelot Rising trilogy. And what a ride it’s been! I read the first instalment, The Guinevere Deception, way back in 2020. I’m a fan of Arthurian retellings and I’ve been very keen to see how the series would end.

In this retelling, Guinevere is a changeling: an unknown entity sent to Camelot by Merlin to protect Arthur with her forbidden magic. Guinevere faces many challenges over the course of the series - most of all, struggling to find a place in a world that would not accept her if they knew who she truly was. Many key figures from Arthurian legend are reimagined here, including Mordred, Morgana, Isolde, and a genderbent version of Lancelot. Just as Arthur has his knights, Guinevere has spent the series cultivating her own group of loyal and extraordinary women. Seeing them take matters into their own hands was extremely satisfying.

3. Malibu Rising by Taylor Jenkins Reid

My first audiobook of the year and my second TJR book. I finally gave into the hype last year and read The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, which I loved. There’s an interconnectedness between the two books: Mick Riva, the father of the Riva children at the centre of Malibu Rising, was one of the infamous seven husbands. Celia St. James also gets a shoutout.

The story is told in two timelines. It’s 1983, and the grownup Riva children are about to host the party of the year in their beachfront mansion. Between the hours of the day leading up to the party, we get flashbacks of the early years to set the scene. Their parents had a turbulent relationship. One of the kids has a different mother. Their dad was never there. But through it all, the kids had each other. Back in the present, the party starts and drama ensues: the siblings all have secrets. By the end of the party, all their dirty laundry will be aired.

TJR is the master of dual timelines. I was glued to this audio from start to finish.

4. People We Meet on Vacation by Emily Henry

This was one of those books I meant to read last year and didn’t get to. It’s also my third Emily Henry book. Like Malibu Rising before it, People We Meet on Vacation is told in dual timelines. In the present day, it’s been two years since the friendship breakup of Poppy and Alex: a pair of millennials who have been friends since college. They’ve gone on vacation together every year since they met. But two years ago, something happened. Chronological snippets of their past vacations are interspersed between the chapters and eventually a pattern begins to emerge. I kind of guessed what it was that broke them up, but let me tell you: the eventual reconciliation was excellent. Emily Henry nailed the best friends to lovers trope. And lucky for me, she has another book coming out this year!

5. Howl’s Moving Castle by Diana Wynne Jones

One of those classics I’ve been meaning to read for a long time. I watched the movie adaptation a couple of years ago and I loved it. I find that when I watch the movie first, I often like it better than the book - if I ever get around to reading the book at all. But this is one of those instances where I liked both equally. The movie is gorgeous and heartfelt. The book has a slightly different vibe, but it’s also enjoyable.

There are some subplots that were cut from the film and because we get to spend more time with the characters, we really get to see them develop. I loved Sophie in both iterations. She’s a young woman turned into an old lady by a witch’s spell and she gives zero forks. She’s finally able to express herself. Howl is more rakish than he was in the movie, but I enjoyed him too. There were several subplots from the book that got cut from the movie, so it was nice to get more backstory about Sophie and Howl’s families as well. This ended up being one of those instances where I enjoyed the book and the movie equally.

6. Six Crimson Cranes by Elizabeth Lim

I’m always here for retellings - especially fairytale retellings. Elizabeth Lim’s Six Crimson Cranes is loosely inspired by Hans Christian Andersen’s Wild Swans, infused with East Asian folklore. It also takes place in the same fictional universe as her earlier Spin the Dawn duology, but you don’t need to read one to understand the other. The heroine of the story is Princess Shiori, the only sister in a family of royal brothers. She possesses magic in a land where magic has been forbidden. Her stepmother also has magic, and when she finds out about Shiori’s powers, she curses her and her brothers. But not everything is what it seems.

Shiori goes on a journey reminiscent of a Disney princess. I’ve always loved some of Hans Christian Andersen’s lesser known stories - The Snow Queen was a favourite of mine before Frozen came along. The Wild Swans is another story I’ve hoped to see a retelling of and I finally got it with Six Crimson Cranes. It preserves just enough of the original story while also being its own thing. Elizabeth Lim nailed it. Now I’m impatiently awaiting the sequel!

Some Inugang friendship head-canons:

In one human night, InuYasha and Sango competed to see who was strongest. Sango won.

Miroku sometimes helps Kagome study. She keeps the history books away, of course, but he is particularly helpful with literature when she has to read the classics.

She gave up on trying to study math with him, because he was starting to learn much faster than she did, and it made her even more frustrated.

Miroku is particularly interested in her biology books.

Shippou, Miroku and Sango try passing through the well once when InuYasha and Kagome are away. It doesn't work :(

InuYasha notices there is something weird with Sango when she first gets pregnant, but he has no idea what could be, and she doesn't even know she is pregnant yet. It leads to endless discussions of him insisting there is something off and her insisting nothing is different.

After InuYasha, Sango is the one who misses Kagome the most during the 3 years separation. She sometimes went to the well during her pregnancy, just hoping she could update Kagome on what was happening.

Kin-Gyo's first word is "slay", because InuYasha keeps trying to distract them by telling them to "go slay the fox". Miroku was hoping for "dad" and was not pleased.

I'm not really a big kohrin shipper but picture this:

Kohaku being super shy and sending Rin mixed messages because of it. They finally get together because little Hisui, being completely oblivious but also big mouthed child, walked up to Rin one afternoon while she's watching the kids and said "my uncle likes you".

One thing I noticed on my Inuyasha manga re-read/mirsan data project is how long it takes for Sango to smile again.

When we are first introduced to her on chapter 85/86, she smiles very openly. She smiles when greeting clients, she smiles when she is back to the village, she smiles petting Kirara...

... and then Naraku happens.

And she doesn't smile again for dozens of chapters.

Not that she doesn't show emotion. While with the gang she gets curious, surprised, annoyed, angry, determined, uneasy, relaxed... But never a smile.

Not until chapter 182.

This is right after Inuyasha stops Sango from killing Kohaku and herself. Miroku just told her a few pages back she shouldn't be so sad when she apologizes for him getting poisoned because of her. Here is when she walks into Kagome and Inuyasha to thank them for standing by her.

So she only learns to smile again when she goes from thinking herself as a burden to the group because of Kohaku to being thankful for everyone sticking together. (Of course it's a process and she goes back and forth a lot into feeling like a burden, but still, this is the first step)

She is shown smiling in the chapter opening images sometimes before this, but not in the actual story. It takes her 96 chapters to smile again after losing her family, and it's because she found a new one.

born and raised in montréal in a bilingual household (will say bonjour/hi unironically)

her parents are big into competitions... hence why she was already competiting at like 10 years-old

she’s a MACHINE she was so skilled and disciplined and talented and the inevitable happened: she became a national and north american champion.

skated all of her life. at 24, she was forced to stop because of personal issues (such as a breakup with her skating partner, very sad) -- just picture tessa virtue and scott moir but more dramatic and less perfect and younger and actually in love.

she’s filming cute videos with some friendly and lowkey vibes (think amandarachlee but less journaling obviously).

she is visiting whistler for the very first time! you’ll catch her at the dog sledding, horse back riding and ice skating areas. and you best believe she’ll have full instagram photoshoots at vallea lumina! big big big fan of maple taffy on snow, hot cocoa, snow angels and the aesthetic of hallmark channel christmas movies <3

—Why did I choose this song?

This is not the most beautiful video ever. Not even close. But, there’s something special about it.

Chris Mann’s song, “Remember Me”, talks about Alzheimer. This disease make the person forget all the beautiful and unique memories, friends, family... theirselves.

But, in another perspective, this song show us how sick we can be without notice.

We have 24 hours to spend everyday, and sometimes we don’t even spend 5 minutes to call one friend, have dinner with our family or just keep some time for ourselves. We forget the persons we love, we forget the persons we used to be, and some persons forgets us too. And when we notice that, so many years have passed away, and we lost special moments to the cruel and fast time.

A new morning is like a “list of what i need to do”: is the start of a new chance to slow up this ‘Alzheimer’. Is when we accept that mission again - making sure people don’t forget us, no matter how many years passes by our bodies.

I was a privileged to be born in Virtue Moir’s timeline. Maybe too young to have a solid opinion about their life steps, but not too young to notice all the passion, grace and generosity that surrounds them. We should fall in love with beautiful souls, beautiful hearts, and not beautiful faces. And it was so easy with Tessa and Scott.

Thousands of persons are making posts today. People who really appreciate all the wonderful legacy they’ve built, and still building. Wish I can build unique stories and memories, and live enough time to tell them to my loved ones. For now, I follow this beautiful example. I try to make life worth the f*cking way!

I need someone to remember me who I am. And I think I found the right persons.

So, this is my choice. I’m making sure I can finish this mission successfully.

January 3rd: 

- For The X-Files season 11 premiere on Fox, Gillian posted this picture of David, Chris and herself. “Gangs all here! Tonight at 8/7c.”

January 8th:

- David couldn’t be at Gillian’s ceremony but he left her a sweet message. “Gillian, you said you would be next to me when you died, too. Well, you were right. But this isn’t death, it’s a beginning. So much more to come for you. In the meantime, I hope your fans sprinkle chocolate on your star the occasional Hollywood midnight and some kind soul builds a Gilly ramp from your star to mine. January 10th: Gillian keeps going on with the red speedo. “Because I wasn’t in this scene and because this isn’t disappointing, I’m putting this out there.” 

January 12th:

- David makes up tells a new story about how they met for the first time: “Celebrating 25 years, makes me look back when I first met Gillian. It was during the casting, I was looking for some matches and she took them out and approached me, just like that, without saying a word.” (read the interview)
