The Night of The Storm

September had been particularly warm. It was the end of summer, and the rain was slowly making its comeback. That afternoon, a particular heavy shower came down, announcing the end of the sunny months. An increasingly annoyed Hob had to run home with his jacket over his head to try not to get completely soaked, wondering to himself why on Earth, after accumulating 600 years of wisdom, he would not remember to leave the house with an umbrella. 

Arriving in his apartment, the soaking wet shoes were the first to go. The second thing off were the socks. Hob loved socks, but he had to agree that walking on wet fabric was a pretty uncomfortable feeling. His bare feet were greeted by the coldness of the wooden paneled floor, and he quickly made his way to his bedroom, trying his best not to leave a trail of rain water behind him. His efforts were futile, and all he could do was sigh and think that eventually, he’d need to tidy up. Now, however, all he wanted to do was take off his wet clothes and get into a warm shower. Hob took off his jacket, hanging it on a hook on the door, finally being able to make his way into the bathroom. 

Hob loved showers, maybe even more than he loved bathtubs. He liked how practical it was to just stand under a shower head and feel the tension and tiredness accumulated on his muscles fade away into something soft and relaxed, maybe even sleepy. He liked to step into the shower in the morning, cold water waking up his senses, brightening up his mind. Of course a bath every once in a while was welcome, but for everyday life, he much preferred showers. 

After a good ten minutes, Hob stepped out and warped a towel around his waist, reaching for another one to dry his hair. Now, feeling warm and relaxed, he could go find something dry and clean to wear, and maybe even text his friends to see if game night was still on. Upon opening the bathroom door, however, an eerie feeling overcame him. 

Hob didn’t feel like he was alone. 

The bedroom was dark, save from the light coming from the bathroom. The shadows were sharp and looming, in a way that almost seemed unnatural. Hob had a few encounters with supernatural entities since first meeting Dream, most of which knew well enough to stay away from him, after all, immortals were surprisingly slippery creatures, with all of time on their hands and collecting more and more resources for their own best survival over time. Still, whoever (or whatever) it was, Hob didn’t feel threatened. He reached for the light switch, fingers lingering above it.

“Come out come out, wherever you are…” 

All Hob could hear— well, not hear, but it felt like his ears were picking up something— was a low hum, a rumble of the lowest possible pitch, landing on his stomach and sinking his feet on the ground like quicksand. The shadows seemed to take the light switch too, and Hob pulled his hand away quickly in reflex, before it could take him too. 

“…whoever you are, I have to tell you I have friends in high places. So why don’t you show up and we can just… you know, talk?” 

He didn’t know why he felt so certain he was actually speaking to another sentient being. The entire room seemed to shake a little, and Hob took that as a ��no”. 

“Hey, hey—“ He held his hands above his head, trying his best to show he meant no harm. What a weird Friday that was turning out to be. “It’s okay! I promise you I won’t hurt you. I also don’t scare easy, you know.” 

Silence. The shadows seemed to ponder. 

“…look, let me just get some clothes from the wardrobe. I won’t turn the lights on, but I might end up having to wear something silly. You’ve been warned.” 

Hob knew the layout of his bedroom fairly well enough to find the wardrobe in the artificial darkness that surrounded him. He opened the doors slowly, trying to reach for a t-shirt and a pair of boxers. “Look, I don’t know who you are, but I don’t want to flash you, so close your eyes or… whatever you use to see.” 

At that, the shadows seemed to retreat. They moved slowly, at first, and Hob only observed from the corner of his eyes, trying not to pay too much attention. He tried his best to get dressed quickly, and shutting the wardrobe closed, he now could somewhat see where things were again. Hob let out a little relieved sigh before turning around. The only unnatural shadow left was coming from his jacket, landing on the armchair beside the window. 

“Thank you. Never thought of asking the shadows for privacy before. I’ll have to remember to do that from now on.” 

A pair of twinkling lights seemed to appear out of nowhere, and Hob tried his best not to seem startled. He approached the shadow, now somewhat resembling a man, the lights where the eyes would usually be. Hob sat on the bed, 

across from the shadow figure sitting on his armchair, and offered the best smile he could muster. “…rough day? I feel like you’re not doing very well. Don’t ask me why.” 

Are you not afraid, Hob Gadling? 

Again, he didn’t hear anyone speak. It just was there, inside his head somehow. A voice, now recognisable, low, trembling. Wounded. Hob could feel his body fill with worry, reaching out almost instantly to touch the intangible form of what he now knew to be: “Dream?!”

In true Dream fashion, and confirming Hob’s suspicions, the shadow of his stranger retreated, the twin stars Hob now knew to be eyes seeming to sparkle as eyes would widen. He didn’t know how he could understand the expressions, or even see them. He just knew they were there, and as with everything involving his strange friend, he only knew what Dream allowed him to know. So he pulled back, giving Dream his space.

You are foolish, Hob Gadling. There are a myriad of creatures that lurk in the darkness. You should not be so welcoming to them. 

“Well, none of them has done me any harm— besides, it wasn’t any creature, it’s you, you idiot.” Hob let out a sigh, brows furrowed in worry and only a sliver of annoyance. Dream was difficult at times, but the good parts far overweighed the bad. His friend was just having a bad day. “…are you hurt?” 

The diffused edges of the shadow seemed to sharpen into definition, but Hob’s question made the image get fuzzy again, as if it disturbed Dream to even think of speaking of his own state of being. Then again, presenting as a shadow had its own charge of meaning Hob’s mind wasn’t able to not see. “I don’t mean to pry, Dream. But I do worry about you.” 

…in a manner of speaking, yes. 

What was that supposed to mean?

“Physically? Emotionally?” 

I do not have a set physical form. Everything that I experience is a collection of all forms of sensory memory from every conscience in existence. Now, before, and after this very moment.

“But you do feel pain. I’ve felt pain in dreams.” 

It is unfortunate to hear you’ve experienced that, Hob. Would you wish for these dreams to be–

“Nope. I’m interrupting you right there. I’m fine, Dream. We’re talking about you here. Don’t deflect.” Hob knew not to push when it came to Dream. He was always afraid, even if just s tiny little bit, that he’d say the wrong thing and Dream would walk up and leave again. Still, he worried for him, cared more than he knew a friend should. So he swallowed his fears, in hope that Dream could swallow his own pride. “Look, I might not understand what it’s like to be… everyone everywhere at all times. But I do understand what it’s like to feel pain, hopelessness… sadness. So if you need to talk, I’m here. If you just want to sit there and… gather yourself, that’s fine too.” 

You had other engagements planned for the evening. 

“I won’t ask how you know.” Hob reached for his cellphone and turned it off, placing it face down on his bedside table. “Just cleared my schedule.” 

Silence filled the room as Hob now stretched his legs on the bed, hands resting on his abdomen. He’d glance at Dream from time to time, noticing that little by little, he could see the sharp lines of his face, the dimensions of his feathery, fluffy black hair. Little by little, his friend seemed to allow himself to be more and more present. Hob still waited in silence. 

“…the reconstruction of the Dreaming is… tiresome.” 

Hob now could see his eyes, and the gleaming of the tears forming at the edges, blue stained with redness that also spread from the tip of Dream’s nose to his cheeks and lips. It made Hob’s heart ache, seeing Dream like that. He still remained silent. 

“…I’ve lost so many of my creations. All of them, made with the utmost care… they did not believe I would return to them. Some were not strong enough to survive without my nurturing. Countless dreams and nightmares, countless mortal minds left without proper tending.” 

“…the sleepy sickness, right?” It was impossible not to interject at that point. Hob had always been curious about the period of his life with no dreams. He’d been blessed to even be able to sleep and wake up every morning, he knew that much.Dream just nodded in confirmation.

“There is still much left to do. The fragile balance of consciousness was skewed in my absence, and the damages have still not been entirely assessed.”  Dream’s voice was trembling, and Hob could see the tears streaming down his face. Still, his expression remained stern, muscles tense and back impossibly straight, as if feeling anything would tip the scales completely off. 

“…seems like an awful lot to deal with, even for an endless.” Hob kept his voice soft, looking over at Dream with what he hoped his friend could tell was sympathy and not pity. Hob could never know the true weight of Dream’s responsibilities. But he could tell how much they were crushing him just then. 

“It is the purpose of my existence, which I’m currently failing to fulfil.”  

“You are being awfully unfair to yourself, Dream. None of this is your fault. You never asked to be imprisoned. All you’re doing now is your best, and that’s all that matters.” 

Hob couldn’t help himself. Dream seemed to be fully there, enough that Hob decided to ignore his best judgement.  Got up from the bed and walked towards Dream, reaching to take his hands. Dream was startled, but did not pull away. That was a good sign. “I think maybe you need some rest. Can you sleep?” 

“…I don’t require sleep.” 

“But can you?”

“Not in the same way you do.” 

“That’s okay.” Hob smiled, pulling Dream to stand and guiding him to the bed. Hob crawled in first, holding the blanket up for Dream to join him. “These sheets are new. Really soft. I figured if I was gonna start visiting you place knowingly, I should do it in style.” 

A tiny smile appeared in Dream’s lips, who didn’t seem too reluctant to join. Maybe he was too tired to argue, or maybe he was allowing himself a little bit of rest. After all, if all the minds he had to oversee required it to continue living, then surely Dream needed to rest as well. Hob watched him as he settled on the bed, resting his head on the pillow and curling up as Hob tucked him in gently. It was impossible not to smile, really. “Do you want me to leave? I can sleep on the couch.” 

Dream was quick to answer, and it surprised Hob a little to hear him say it. “Stay.” 

“Okay. Not going anywhere then.” 

It was different, seeing Dream so vulnerable. The urge to pull him close was almost impossible to resist, to protect Dream from all the ghosts that plagued him. Hob would rebuild the Dreaming with his own hands if he could. He’d do it gladly if it meant his friend would get some peace of mind. Now, he seemed a little less sad, and that was something. The vision of Dream laying down on his bed, with his head resting on his pillow was something he’d need to file into his memory to appreciate later on. 

The silence between them stretched, until it was filled by the sound of tiny little sobs, that turned into crying. Then, Hob couldn’t possibly hold himself back from trying to comfort him. He let his arms wrap around Dream’s slender, seemingly frail body. Dream didn’t seem to resist him, grabbing Hob’s shirt with his hands, holding tightly onto the fabric as his tears streamed down his cheeks. Hob let one of his hands go to Dream’s back, rubbing circles with his palm, trying his best to soothe him. He shushed softly, while his other hand found the back of Dream’s head, letting his fingers card trough silken black hair. 

Hob didn’t tell Dream to stop crying. He waited, feeling the fabric of his shirt get wet with tears, accepting it gladly. He wasn’t sure of how much time went by, but soon, the sobbing stopped, and Dream’s eyes seemed to be closed. His breathing evened, slowing down to a relaxed pace, as did his heartbeat. Dream was, for all intended purposes, asleep. Hob pressed a kiss to the top of his friend’s head, and stayed there, as he was, holding the universe and all the shadows projected by the stars in his arms. Humanity could wait a little. They all could do with some rest.

🤔 what is the hardest part of writing fanfiction?

Hello! <3

Oh man... for me it's patience. I often times get so excited writing something that I'll just post the first draft without waiting a day to edit it. And then I reread it the next day and it's just awful. I wont even have the patience to go back and edit it cos it's, ya know, already posted so.

I've proven to myself time and time again that if I hold off posting! If I just sleep on it and come back to the document with fresh eyes! It WILL be better and most importantly, I'll like it and feel proud of it.

⭐cancer placements allow themselves to feel their emotions. they may get annoyed by the intensity or the amount of them, but they process them fully, and this makes it easier for them to move on. random thought but writing letters to people they like may be something they do or did as kids haha. they're very romantic

⭐mars in libra avoid conflicts and try to be reasonable about everything, but if they think you crossed a line, you'll see why aries is their sister sign pretty soon. once they tell you off, you'll never see them the same way, so underrestimate them at your cost

⭐having stelliums can be interesting. it for sure puts a lot of emphasis on the influence of that house on your life, and i found that it can be both positive and negative since they face lots of challenges related to their house but also many blessings. those who have stelliums kind of embody multiple characteristics simultaneously

⭐sun in the 11th people glow when they are with their closest friends. they also tend to dream big and care a lot about the world. their friends usually help them in their future goals. they feel a bit different than people in their hometown/country, mostly because they cannot be tied down to a single culture because they enjoy different things, which usually makes them quite open-minded and tolerant. they can be picky about the people they let in super close though

⭐mars in the 6th can procrastinate a lot actually, but they get things done. may get sudden waves of high energy and get things done rapidly and extensively. they expect a lot from themselves regarding their ambitions and aspirations. they try to improve themselves in any way most of the time, but they should also accept their current state if they want to evolve and love themselves. they need to watch out for their moral perfectionism too. it's okay to make mistakes as long as you apologise and strive to change for the better

⭐north node in cancer struggle with accepting their vulnerable side. they hate feeling like things and people can evoke strong emotions in them. they want to be more detached, but those that work on themselves find it very rewarding once they embrace their strong emotions. they can also be really reliable, practical, and thoughtful

⭐fire+water combinations in birth charts-i am sending you a hug. i know exactly how difficult it is to keep all those emotions under check, and that you need a lot of understanding and rest to function. use those emotions and passions well hun, you are strong and capable. you have a lot of empathy and wonder inside of you

⭐leo moon need to watch out for hurting people when their ego is hurt because they can lash out and make lots of damage. take a second to think whether it's worth it or not, since there is no point in trying to "win" in a fight with someone you love

⭐pisces mars can be too forgiving, especially to those they care about. don't let people walk over you dear, no matter who they are. nobody deserves that kind of treatment

Immortals can't die, right? That's the whole premise of the condition. Immortals can't die.

"But you can be hurt, or captured." Hob remembered Dream saying in their meeting way back in 1789. He'd been captured before, sometime around 1640, drowned as a witch. He'd been hurt plenty, now that he thought about it. Apart from that, Hob had been more or less lucky and tried his best to remain out of harm's way. One thing Dream had failed to mention was that human mortals could very much get sick.

The first time Hob caught a really bad flu since having become immortal, he was panicked for the whole duration of it. While his body did heal fast, he did remember how bodies dropped during the Bubonic plague; It wasn't a nice sight at all, and seeing people drop dead around him when the Great Plague of London swept the city in between 1665 and 1666 was awfully reminiscent of how he watched his entire village fall. When the Spanish Flu came around in 1918, Hob had spent enough time feverish and miserable that he vowed to do anything he could to never get sick again. Things did change with time, and medicine took big, long strides that made things significantly easier, but still, Robert Gadling had no intention of ever dying (and also no intention of being confined to his bed for inordinate amounts of time).

The thing is, you can't exactly predict just how and when you'll get sick. You take precautions, you try to stay protected (all the Zoom classes he'd taught between 2020 and 2022 sure made him wish he'd never have to look at a flat screen again), but when it happens, it happens. He was lucky enough to know he'd never die from it, but it still made him uneasy and anxious. It still brought him back to seeing his family die. Trauma was a sticky thing to get rid of.

Autumn in October was usually very lovely. London was mostly grey, but Hob had learned to find colour and vibrancy in unexpected places, and he liked seeing how time affected each and every little thing, even himself. Still, the newfound chilliness in the air did not agree with the rising temperature of his body or the soreness of his throat, nor with the amount of time it would take him to actually walk to the kitchen to grab something to eat and back to the comfort of his warm, soft blankets. He'd just rather stay holed up in bed and wait it out, however long it took. Hob would sleep, wake up, get up to blow his nose and throw the crumpled pieces of toilet paper out of sight, then repeat the cycle indefinitely.

He had no idea what it would invite.

"Hob?"

Hearing Dream's voice out of nowhere startled him. Hob thought he might be hallucinating, but he'd learned to know that even when he questioned what was real or not, when Dream wanted to be present, be it in the Waking or the Dreaming, he was. Hob popped his head and a hand from under the mass of blankets he'd cocooned himself into, waving at Dream. "...oh, hey there, duck. Wasn't… wasn't expecting you here."

"You have spent an unusual amount of time in my realm as of late, Hob." Dream approached the bed, brows furrowed in what Hob now knew to read as worry. He placed an ice cold hand on Hob's forehead, and the sad look on his face seemed to twist into a thousand little different forms of worry and anxiety. Still, his voice was steady and low as ever, only softer than usual. "I became worried for your well being. I apologise for not being able to come to your aid sooner."

Dramatic as ever, wasn't he? Hob chuckled, lips curling into a smile as he made the effort to tilt his head up to lean into Dream's touch. "Ah, don't worry. I'm sure the Dreaming is way over capacity at the moment. Bunch of kids at the uni called in sick this week, it was only a matter of time before I–"

A coughing fit interrupted Hob's spiel, the worry in Dream's face spilling over to the rest of his body as he quickly reached for Hob's back, rubbing circles gently as his overheating body spasmed. While the coldness of Dream's hands (and other parts of him) never bothered Hob, his touch almost felt alien in his current state. "Save your strenght, Hob. I shall tend to your needs for now."

Hob couldn't help but feel smitten. He had no idea how Dream intended to help him, but for someone that had access to every piece of information ever thought by every brain ever (whew!) he trusted Dream to have some insight. "..trust your… capable hands."

"Sleep for now, my love."

Hob felt Dream's lips on his forehead, and was tempted to try and bring him closer. He fell asleep with the blink of an eye.

Dream had no idea how he intended to help Hob.

It was the right thing to do. He had stumbled into enough of Hob Gadling's nightmares to know for a fact that disease wasn't something he took lightly. And Dream knew every piece of information ever thought by every brain ever (whew!) Still, it didn't mean he knew the order of which the information ought to be applied. It also didn't mean Dream wasn't going to at least try to give his lover a bit of the gentle care he was so often on the receiving end of.

Dream paced around the room for a bit, unsure of just where to begin. Did Hob have a physician he could consult? Hob had mentioned his avoidance in having his information be kept in any sort of database, which Dream understood to be paramount to ensure his safety. Taking him back to the Dreaming might also not be a good idea; he had no idea how Hob's body would take to the journey, or even if the needs of a human body (albeit immortal) could be met there. The more he thought about it, the more he felt helpless, and that was a feeling he did not welcome.

Hob had taught him to ask for help when needed. Which was why Dream now waited by the small window at the kitchen, waiting for Matthew. He hoped, for all of their sakes, that he wouldn't regret it.

"Hey there boss! Whatcha need?" Matthew landed on the windowsill, bowing down his head to greet his master.

"I require your assistance." Was all Dream managed to say. He was still unsure of whether that was the best thing to do or not. He felt… embarrassed to need to ask. "Hob Gadling has fallen ill."

"Aw man, that sucks. Definitely don't miss that feat of being human. That's why he kept showing up at the Dreaming all the time, right?"

"...I need insight on how to better tend to his health."

Matthew seemed to perk up, which Dream interpreted as surprise. Was it really that odd that he would want to take care of Hob? "Did he tell ya what he's got? Flu, a bug, somethin' else?"

"...no. He is asleep."

"...did you ask?"

"He is weakened, I sent his mind to the Dreaming for the time being."

Matthew tilted his head to the side for a moment, and let out a sound Dream could only describe as a sigh, but uttered by a bird. "...so you were worried he kept showing up at the Dreaming. You came here to help and… sent him back there?"

(…well, when you put it like that—)

"A well rested mind gives way to a well healed body."

Dream was beginning to see that he was going about things wrong, and he didn't like the feeling. "Look, boss… I think he might need some medication, if it's that bad. Just wake him up and ask him. If you don't wanna wake him, you can just get into his little sleepy brain and ask."

"I should not have to ask."

"Well, we can't all know how to–"

"–Hob never asks. He always knows."

There it was. The discomfort, the anxiety of not knowing, of feeling less than. In the Dreaming, it manifested as rain and thunder, as violent crashing waves in the shores of creation, reshaping his newest creatures in all sorts of twisted forms. The flowers withered, the night was starless. In the Waking World, where he was confined to a physical appearance, it was a tightness on his chest, a constant insecurity, fear of not being quite enough. It brought out the worst in him: the rudeness, a short temper and a disregard for the feelings of others. He should be better than that. Luckily, Matthew already knew him well enough to see right through it. "...boss, I'm sure he does. He asks you stuff all the time, that's how he knows."

"He doesn't contain the entirety of the human intellect and beyond within himself, Matthew."

"And you still come to him for insight, dontcha? You don't gotta know everything. Just have to ask the right questions." Matthew shifts between his tiny feet, before taking flight to land on Morpheus' shoulder. "Go on. I won't tell."

It was admirable how patient his subjects were with him. In all truth, the most admirable patience he was offered was Hob's own, freely given and seemingly never-ending. Lucienne and Matthew came in at a close second. Morpheus allowed himself to show his loyal raven a slight smile, enough to leave Matthew feeling very proud about himself. He certainly would not shut up about it in the days to come, Morpheus was sure of it. "...very well. I thank you for your help, Matthew. You may return to the Dreaming. Tell Lucienne to watch over the realm in my absence."

"You sure you don't need my help with anything else? How long will you be gone?"

"Go on, Matthew. You will know when you’re needed.”

“Jeez, fine. I’m leaving. Tell Hob I said hi!”

A slightly worried, slightly proud Matthew bowed down his tiny head to his master once more, before flying out and disappearing into the night. He'd done the right thing in asking for help, and he was sure Hob would be proud too when he told him of it. Still, Dream didn't have much time to congratulate himself; when finally returned to the bedroom, he found Hob thrashing on the bed.

Hob walked down a long, darkened hallway. He wasn't sure where he was, or how long he'd been there for. He paced slowly, carefully, fluorescent lights flickering against the washed out aquamarine walls and linoleum floor. Elevator doors at the end of the hallway opened, and he walked in.

The doors opened again. Same place, different year. He saw nurses rushing by, heard people crying in the distance, paramedics pushing gurneys with collapsing patients. A hospital, it seemed. Someone approached him and checked his temperature. His head was pressed against a pillow, and his body was littered by wires, surrounded by machines beeping out of sync.

He blinked and the machines disappeared. Same place, different year. The staff wore cloth masks, he could hear someone cry out for their mother in the distance. Someone walks past holding a severed limb. His arms are tied to a bed, feet too. Another hand checks for his temperature.

Different place, different year. His mother looked over him as he laid down in bed. Everything was burning, so so hot. He was so tired, so scared. It got him. And it will get us all.

He's pulled out of it, and the next thing he knows, it's his bed he's laying in, and Dream's arms are around him, holding him close.

Dream had sent Hob straight into the hands of his nightmares. How he could have not predicted it was beyond him, another failure to add to the long list of things that made him unworthy of Hob's affection. He held onto him tightly, with a hand on the back of his head, propping him up to sit on the bed. Untangling Hob's mind from the dream should've been easy, but when the body needs rest so desperately, sometimes it can push back. When he felt Hob's arms curl around him, ever so weak, he let out a sigh of relief.

"I am sorry, Hob– I thought you would be safer in the Dreaming, it was foolish of me to assume no nightmares would find you without me there. I am sorry, I am–"

"Dream. I'm okay. I'm okay."

Dream had no idea how Hob found it in him to be so forgiving. He knew he didn't have it in himself, which made him feel all the more undeserving. He reached for one of Hob's many pillows, quickly placing it behind his back. He had no need to reach for anything. He could just make the pillow's appear in whatever way he pleased. He could do anything he wanted if he could just.

"...duck?"

"I–"

"Are you okay?"

"...yes." Dream didn't need to breathe. He could use a deep breath at that moment, though. "Are you?"

Hob shrugged, smiling gently before pressing a chaste kiss to Dream's lips. "...been better, am better. In your arms and all."

There he was, his Hob. Smiling at him even though Dream did nothing to earn it. Showing kindness even in distress. Dream buried his face in Hob's unusually warm neck, taking in his scent. He wished he had the power to just… make him healthy. "Hob."

"Yeah?"

Hob held onto Dream with what little strength he had at that moment, pressing a kiss to his temple. His love almost hurt to receive at times. It was so bright, so… full. "...how can I… better help you? I am unused to illness. It is not a matter of concern to my kind. I wish to aid you, my love. But I find myself resourceless."

"Oh, duck…" Hob had the kindest eyes Dream had ever seen. He'd existed since time was time and night was night. Nothing bore resemblance to those eyes. "I… I'm just… glad you're here with me.."

Dream was getting impatient, but for Hob’s sake, he would endure his own uneasiness. "There must be something I can do, Hob.”

Hob was always quick to notice the changes in Dream’s moods. In the beginning, it was terrifying to have someone that could see right through him so clearly. It made him feel vulnerable and exposed. Now, he knew it to be a blessing. “…It wouldn’t have got this bad if I’d just…” Hob sniffed, stopping for a moment to cough a few times. “…been more careful.”

“Tell me what you need, my love.” Dream spoke gently, as gently as he moved to finally place the pillows behind Hob, then reaching for the almost finished roll of toilet paper so that his lover could grab another handful to blow his nose. “I am but your servant for as long as you’ll require my care.”

Hob raised his brows, unable to hold back a chuckle. “Don’t talk like that when I’m like this. It’s a big waste.” He took a moment to get adjusted to leaning on the pillows behind him. Even sick, he looked so, so beautiful. “I think I… could do with a shower. Maybe some food?”

“That can be arranged. Anything else, lover mine?”

“I think there’s aspirin somewhere in the cabinet over the sink in the bathroom.”

As quickly as Hob had told Dream of the location, he was able to conjure it to appear on the bedside table, along with a glass of water, room temperature. He was getting less anxious, and it made things much clearer to act on.“Oh, that’s fancy. Thank you, duck.”

Hob reached for the box, but Dream was quick to take it from his hands, grabbing the aluminium blister inside and tearing it with a long, black nail (a claw, really), then handing the pill over to Hob. Before the other could think of wasting his strength on anything else, Dream grabbed the glass of water for him, holding it up to his lips for Hob to drink. Once again, he smiled that beautiful, gentle smile. “If you keep treating me like that, I’m gonna get spoiled.”

Dream felt like he was doing much less than the bare minimum, but Hob had told him, more than once, that he had the terrible habit of being hard on himself. “I shall do it more often, if you so desire. Now, your bath.”

It felt like a dream (ha!) really. Seeing his friend, his lover, his Dream fussing over him like that. The King of Dreams and Nightmares, Lord of the Dreaming, Prince of Stories… Hob Gadling’s personal caretaker now had been added to his long list of titles. He didn’t mean to be surprised, really, but Dream always managed to show him some new, unexpected part of himself. This time, it was in the form of the gentle kisses to his temple whenever he helped Hob shift on the bed, in the strength of his arms when he insisted to carry Hob to the bathroom, the water that seemed to be perfect temperature for the whole duration of the bath Dream had prepared for him. The water smelled softly of lavender and lemongrass, and Hob had a feeling he’d be very, very sleepy by the end of it. The way Dream massaged the shampoo into his scalp, how gently he combed through his damp hair with his fingers… Hob would beg to catch a cold every single day if this is what it got him.

But then again, Hob shouldn’t have been surprised at all; Dream had warned him extensively about how brightly the flame of love burned within him. Of how he still carried the fire of his previous lovers, of how every feeling of longing and want was the material of his sweetest dreams, while heartbreak and jealousy could foster the worst nightmares. He’d warned Hob that being loved by endlessness was the same as trading his soul away; he’d never be alone, even in the deepest of deserts. He’d never be only for himself, but partly Dream’s, for all eternity. Hob couldn’t think of a fate better than that.

After being pampered like a king (Dream would know how to), he was blessed with another one of Dream’s otherworldly talents: he could find food from his memories. Fish them out of time, bring them to the present. With his permission, Dream scoured his brain for the most nutritional meals he’d ever had, and the ones with the most sentimental value, too. He was able to taste a soup his mother used to make him when he was little, the tea his dear Eleanor would brew whenever he was feeling indisposed. He wondered what food made by Dream’s own hands in the Waking World would taste like, and like the master eavesdropper his lover was, Dream hurried to the stove, borrowing the culinary talents of Hob’s neighbour, who happened to be a professional chef, that slept on the flat next to his. Now, his list of favourite dishes had just been updated: Dreamstuff Spaghetti had quickly risen to the top.

Dream insisted on carrying him around, and Hob was not complaining. He’d hold Hob while he was sleeping, always waking him up to take his meds on time, and he was almost sure he caught Dream grading essays for him at one point. It was funny, seeing a creature that knew all and had full domain over every language ever spoken be confused when students were not able to form fully comprehensible sentences. Those were the moments Hob would remember and cherish most, he was certain of it. He caught the hang of it pretty quickly, and soon was discussing the multiple interpretations an answer could have with Hob, who was too amused to tell his menace of a lover that multiple choice questions were called that because you could pick one answer out of many, and not all of them.

By the time Hob was feeling like himself again, a week had gone by with Dream by his side. Still, his dedication to Hob’s well-being was unwavering, and a part of Hob, deep deep down, didn’t want for it to be over. He wished, more than ever, that they could just… be together. All the time.

Hob woke up to Dream’s cold palm to his forehead, smiling at him when his eyes blinked open, leaning in to press a kiss to his lips. They were curled up together, protected by the sheets Dream had changed himself the night before. A gift from the Dreaming, woven from the softest fabric Hob had ever touched. Almost as soft as Dream’s own skin.

“Good morning, Hob. I take it you had pleasant dreams?”

Smug bastard. As if he hadn’t crafted those dreams himself. “…none as nice as this, no offence. Morning, duck.”

Dream smiled. He’d seen so many of these in the past week Hob was begging to think he had in fact died and this was heaven. “Then I shall work harder to keep their quality to your liking.”

Another kiss, now gently placed on Hob’s forehead. He didn’t want Dream to go. He knew Dream had to, knew he was keeping the anthropomorphic personification of the entire collective unconsciousness of this universe (and he suspected all others) stuck in his untidy flat cooking him pasta for over a week. He was quite sure there would be a cosmic scale paycheck waiting for him at some point. So he let out a sigh, taking the gentleness of those blue eyes, to remind himself just why he couldn’t be selfish about this. “You’ve already done so much. Really. I… I’m starting to feel a little guilty, duck.”

Dream seemed surprised, and maybe even a little offended, which just added to how adorable he looked as he tilted his head in confusion, “Whatever for? I am only repaying your unwavering kindness with my own.”

“Well… I’d love to keep you here forever, but… you know, balance of the entire universe and all that. And you don’t have to repay me for anything. Freely given, as you like to say.”

“So is mine.”

Dream was silent for a moment, seeming to contemplate an impossible puzzle. How odd it was, to be able to surprise an all-knowing entity. He sat up on the bed cross legged, looking jovial and restless all at once. Hob sat up too, feeling healthier than he had in years. “I have not ignored my duties while caring for you, Hob Gadling. If anything, I had more time to tend to the ones more dear to me.”

He really had a way with words that made Hob want to ignore responsibility altogether. “…isn’t it easier for you to do that from the Dreaming? I’m not saying I don’t want you here… is just…”

“Robert.” Dream placed a hand on Hob’s cheek, running his thumb over Hob’s lower lip. “I have visited the Dreaming every night while I was here with you. Lucienne has been overseeing the realm during the day, I have full confidence in her capability to maintain order in my absence. For that reason, I have allowed myself to take time away from my duties to be here with you. You must not feel as if my time was ill spent. I don’t regret a moment of it.”

Hob blinked, letting the full weight of Dream’s words wash over him like a tidal wave during a storm. He let it drown him for a moment, re-emerging shaken, almost teary eyed. “…you sap. Come here.”

Yes, he was going to get at least one cold every two weeks from now on. Give Dream a week with him and one at the Dreaming. Hob pulled Dream into his arms, showering his face with kisses. How precious the King of Dreams was, with his hair even more of a bed head than usual, from sleeping on Hob’s pillows, on Hob’s bed. Dream held onto Hob tightly, letting out a content hum.

Now that he thought about it, Dream could use a break from work every once in a while.

if you have strong mutable (gemini, sagittarius, pisces, virgo) placements then you NEED to write things down if you don't already. all those thoughts that constantly swirl in your head: the frequent tasks, goals, feelings, aspirations, opinions, etc - WRITE THEM DOWN. this is not only therapeutic & stress-relieving for you but almost necessary, or you're going to burn out and overload your own mind constantly.

when you bottle, or when you let plans, goals, dreams, to-do lists, projects, etc live solely in your head - you'll notice you can't sleep as well, it's harder to rest, your memory gets more foggy than usual, you feel burnt out and unable to connect, etc. specifically:

write down your feelings. this will be your ultimate (free) therapy. start to journal, write a diary. make a private twitter/tumblr where you spill your feelings, frustrations, thoughts. you will feel an immense sense of relief by writing or typing your feelings out - even if no one is reading it but you. mutable moons especially. our feelings tend to change rapidly, but it doesn't make them less valid. don't bottle out of the fear your feelings will change/you'll just "get over it"!! write it down and let it out!!

write! to-do! lists!!!!! these don't have to be for important things. you want to learn digital art? you want to study coding? you want to learn french? you want to re-decorate? you probably have a billion things you want to do, and then you get overwhelmed by the options, and do nothing. write down all the things you want to do. make a to-do list for these things. get them out of your head and somewhere permanent/physical. looking at the options in front of you will feel much easier.

make excel project trackers (you can even make these for to-do list items/goals/etc)! mutable placements have a tendency to start a lot of projects or tasks, and never finish any of them. make a simple tracker for all the projects you start. you won't forget what you're working on, and you'll be less overwhelmed trying to remember what you have going on (example of the one i always use pictured below)

talking out your thoughts and feelings is also very cathartic. make fake (or real, i support u!) youtube vlogs where you spill your feelings and talk about your plans, your day, what you have to do, etc. talk to someone you love and trust, vent to them about how things are; or about what you're getting up to. i find writing has an edge, because you can go back to it for reference (mutables tend to forget things easily) - but as long as you're getting the swirl of your mind somewhere outside of your head, you'll feel so, so much less stressed.

mutable dominants tend to constantly live in go-mode, we're restless and always doing something. we feel uncomfortable and sometimes guilty about staying still. our minds don't ever shut off. it's very important for mutable placements to learn how to rest, be present in the moment, and learn grounding. this can be done in many ways, but i've found personally that writing works best for me. other helpful practices can be: talk therapy, acceptance theory, yoga, meditation, hiking, camping, etc.

i also want to remind mutable signs: we change a lot. we have a lot of ideas. there's so much we want to do. we often feel like we have no path, no big goal; we can struggle with purpose as we don't often aspire for permanent things or "one big goal". this is NOT bad. there is nothing wrong with changing your feelings, your mind, your goals, your life path. you CAN do all the things you want to do! you have your entire life ahead of you! yes, you can learn all those languages. yes, you can have three different careers in your life. yes yes yes! don't listen to negativity from others. don't beat yourself up for not having one big goal like some people around you might. cherish and embrace all the things you want to achieve and complete (both big and small). learn to follow-through with and finish the things that matter to you (writing things down will really help with this, make action plans/steps - break everything down into smaller pieces). take the time to slow down and enjoy the moments as they come. you got this!

You are always balancing two halves of yourself. Gemini of Air and Virgo of the Earth.

At your core, you’re both here to make connections and say what needs to be said!

GEMINI or the 3rd house apply these gifts in their natural settings: to the mind, communication, social activity, siblings (twins).

VIRGO or the 6th house on the other hand apply these gifts to their everyday routines and relationships. Less talking and more analysis & servitude. (The maiden).

The Duality of Mercury ⚕️

Virgo vs. Gemini

Mercury was the messenger of the Gods. He was essential to the communication and diplomacy between the realms. Each one trusted him. So, of course he knew them all well... and their dirty laundry.

🐍 Is it no wonder why they seem to know just about everybody and everybody’s business? Do not deny it, Virgo. LOL👀

Although they held more power individually, Mercury held the power of being their collective voice! (Also rules oration) They entrusted him with how and what was said on their behalf… often being a literal translator. (Powerful!)

This is similar to situations many Geminis and Virgos find themselves in. Many will come to you for advice and insert you into their dealings.👀 (As the middleman.)

Geminis on a social level and Virgos often within the family and relationships.

The Gods' divine trust came with plenty of gifts, which you’ll also find true of lovers in this lifetime. People value you and your gifts, which gives you purpose. (A virgo's dream.)

The most significant gift given to Mercury, was perhaps his trademark wand or staff... known as

"The Caduceus"

Per the Greco-Roman mythology, the caduceus was gifted to him by the Sun God, Apollo. A magical olive branch staff with two serpents intertwining around its base.

They say if it touched the dying, it blessed them with a gentle death. However, when applied to the deceased… they would literally return to life. (DUALITY!)

You’ve probably noticed this symbol at our hospitals, on our ambulances, etc.

I like to believe these two snakes themselves are yet another symbol of Mercury’s duality.

One is good and the other bad. One yin. Other yang. One Virgo and One Gemini👀

🐍Mercury was also known as the trickster God or God of thievery!

This is essential to note because I have a theory (possibly far-fetched, but makes so much sense) that this may have a connection to a certain Garden of Eden… where a certain serpent spoke to a certain woman and convinced her to eat the fruit of …. KNOWLEDGE. 🤯

They say that before the caduceus had it's powers, it was just a branch. Mercury was stuck in servitude to the God's.

But…what if… Mercury being the trickster God convinced the maiden (virgo) to bite of the the fruit of knowledge in the forbidden garden and gained a portion of the powers of Mercury that he did not want.

If Virgo took on the need to serve, then Mercury would be free to frolick the realms with his tricks and thievery. He was also remarked as a habitual line-stepper, or boundary-crosser. (This is unevolved Gemini energy all the way)

This really gets deep when you realize that Virgo's sister sign Pisces (whom in my Neptune post, I compared to Persephone) bit of the fruit of Hades in the same curious fashion and was in more or less words cursed!

This does not mean that being of service is a curse in any way, but honestly, the mythology behind this dual planet is fascinating.

I think Virgo actually bossed her side of the energy up to the max. She is the earthy incarnation of her own genius, often never showing just how intelligent she really is... so as not to reveal her cards.

Virgo can bring her wildest ideas to fruition within the Earthy realm! (After it's perfected to her liking of course.) A gift!

However, Virgo can also have some trickery within her nature… often appearing or putting on a more innocent act than she really is.

But, with Mercurian energy there is always the possibility for their beautiful thoughts to come out a bit... wrong.

This brings me to a very important note.

🐍Please beware of false gossip.

It’s inevitable honestly, as people can’t help but give knowledge to a heavenly messenger.

However, with the optional tongue of a serpent… be mindful of the power you possess Mercurians! (Think: Parsel-tongue in Harry Potter Universe.) It’s nothing to play with because here in this Earthly realm, Saturn is dominant and it is the ruler of Karma.

You are a divine PROPHET (or Prophetess). Please handle your energy as such. 🫶🏾

In love, they’ll have many admirers in several dimensions.

🐍I imagine a Gemini Mercurian as a sapiosexual, playboy of sorts. You’ll have your choosing of many lovers and will probably choose none… in search of new lands and ideas to learn and add to your beautiful collection.

You'll have an array of different tastes (in the bedroom as well) and will share passion with many, as you are a master of tricks.

🐍 It’s hard to lockdown a Godly intelligent being with the ability to fly away at a moments notice.

Many an earthly sign lover and watery soul will long for you and you will spin whimsical circles around them with ease, for you are too quick to catch.

Nothing too heavy or emotional, you must keep it light for this winged beauty or she’ll float away…

But, I do have to ask…my beautiful Geminis, 3rd housers if it ever gets tiresome to always be on the go?

Connecting too much to your air and neglecting your earthly connections through Mercury could leave you afloat for all eternity… alone. (This can of course be counter-acted with other placements in the natal chart.)

🐍Virgo Mercurians on the other hand are much more Earthy with their approach to love. This is the person who has thought very intricately about what the lover of their life will look like, smell like, and even their speech cadence. She eagerly awaits to be a perfect wife, organizing the home, teaching the children, etc.

Many will try to win her, as her innocent.. maiden-like energy is very attractive. While she may appear innocent, she is not naive!

All of her daily beauty routines, outfit curations, and perfected speech will not be wasted on just any man.

The Virgo's analytical eyes has surveyed many a suitor who tried to win her heart. She is looking for the perfect man. The one whom she can serve and assist while being provided for in return.

Better believe, if she chose you.. you have checked all of her boxes. For, she wants an Earthly promise...(AKA, Where's the money? If you ask me, the perfect suitor is perhaps a Capricorn or Taurus dominant. ) But, my Virgo queens... do not neglect your airy influences of Mercury as well. Life can be more rewarding than the material world.

˚₊· ͟͟͞͞➳❥ chart ruler in 12th house can suggest you moving abroad ( i had my chart ruler- moon in 12th house conjunct Jupiter (travel, foreign) when i moved to a completely new country. also my 12th house was in Gemini which rules over travel and trips so that enhanced it).

˚₊· ͟͟͞͞➳❥ i had my 12th house packed with planetary objects (venus, northnode, uranus, sun, mercury and moon) and that year i was not doing too good with my overall mental health HOWEVER, i was very spiritually inclined that year, i started to develop habits related to spirituality.

˚₊· ͟͟͞͞➳❥ the year that i studied my a** off i had a SR virgo rising and mercury (the ruler) in 10th house in gemini (knowledge, mind, writing). i wrote alottt like loads and loads of notes for my exams.

˚₊· ͟͟͞͞➳❥ in the year my daily routine changed and i had a very difficult time to process it, i had my 6th house in scorpio and pluto (ruler) in 8th house (of death, endings, transformative occurrences). oh and to put the cherry on top pluto was in capricorn so yeahh.

˚₊· ͟͟͞͞➳❥ when i had moon in 5th house i was fantasying a LOTT about romance. i had moon conjunct neptune in PISCESS. i was very delusional about love. i didnt even want to be in a relationship lol i just liked the idea of it.

˚₊· ͟͟͞͞➳❥ the asteroid enterprise (9777) in my 11th house was the year i made lots of job applications through the internet. i sent in lots of digital stuff and had some calls through internet involving my career.

˚₊· ͟͟͞͞➳❥ in the year i had a very healthy friendship my 11th house ruler was in the 7th house (equality, balance, partnership) this was the most stable and very communicative (mercury) based friendship meaning that problems were solved were fixed through communications. mercury (ruler of my 11th house) was conjunct northnode, i received lots of gifts (7th house), opportunities, and she spent money on me on food mostly (in taurus). VERYY fascinatingg

˚₊· ͟͟͞͞➳❥ SR chiron in 6th house is not for the weak. i had this in 18 degress (virgo) and my physical appearance was all i was focused on and was very critical about it VERY.

˚₊· ͟͟͞͞➳❥ uranus in 9th house- i was very confused with my school work, the overall school experience was very unfamiliar to me.

˚₊· ͟͟͞͞➳❥ on the solar return that i had an 8th house stellium (chiron, venus, jupiter, neptune, mars) that year i had lots of luxury gifts given to me (Venus). i went to the movies on my birthday of the beginning of my SR (Neptune) we ate at a luxury restaurant (venus) in that year i got a brand new laptop (Uranus). i got a new set of tarot cards (Jupiter) and was bought a gym membership (mars).

˚₊· ͟͟͞͞➳❥ moon at 1 degree in my SR, i was very sensitive and was overthinking about everything whenever someone would hurt me.

˚₊· ͟͟͞͞➳❥ sun in 10th house in SR, i wasn't seeking any recognition but i had no choice in the matter, others could NOTT leave me alone. i was talking a lot also to new people that i never spoke to before (sun conjunct mercury in Gemini).

˚₊· ͟͟͞͞➳❥ i cant get enough about the 12th house but, the year when i had a 12th house stellium, i started to observe my dreams more and started recording them on paper.

˚₊· ͟͟͞͞➳❥ the year when my 12th house was in taurus (throat, voice), i barely talked, like i was very quiet.

˚₊· ͟͟͞͞➳❥ SR scorpio ASC was very focused on occult things, i spent hours and hours studying (pluto in 3rd house) natal charts, tarot online (aquarius).

˚₊· ͟͟͞͞➳❥ my SR MC in leo was the year i changed my hair completey the way i havent before, i developed confidence with that hairstyle and never went back.
