The Night of The Storm

September had been particularly warm. It was the end of summer, and the rain was slowly making its comeback. That afternoon, a particular heavy shower came down, announcing the end of the sunny months. An increasingly annoyed Hob had to run home with his jacket over his head to try not to get completely soaked, wondering to himself why on Earth, after accumulating 600 years of wisdom, he would not remember to leave the house with an umbrella. 

Arriving in his apartment, the soaking wet shoes were the first to go. The second thing off were the socks. Hob loved socks, but he had to agree that walking on wet fabric was a pretty uncomfortable feeling. His bare feet were greeted by the coldness of the wooden paneled floor, and he quickly made his way to his bedroom, trying his best not to leave a trail of rain water behind him. His efforts were futile, and all he could do was sigh and think that eventually, he’d need to tidy up. Now, however, all he wanted to do was take off his wet clothes and get into a warm shower. Hob took off his jacket, hanging it on a hook on the door, finally being able to make his way into the bathroom. 

Hob loved showers, maybe even more than he loved bathtubs. He liked how practical it was to just stand under a shower head and feel the tension and tiredness accumulated on his muscles fade away into something soft and relaxed, maybe even sleepy. He liked to step into the shower in the morning, cold water waking up his senses, brightening up his mind. Of course a bath every once in a while was welcome, but for everyday life, he much preferred showers. 

After a good ten minutes, Hob stepped out and warped a towel around his waist, reaching for another one to dry his hair. Now, feeling warm and relaxed, he could go find something dry and clean to wear, and maybe even text his friends to see if game night was still on. Upon opening the bathroom door, however, an eerie feeling overcame him. 

Hob didn’t feel like he was alone. 

The bedroom was dark, save from the light coming from the bathroom. The shadows were sharp and looming, in a way that almost seemed unnatural. Hob had a few encounters with supernatural entities since first meeting Dream, most of which knew well enough to stay away from him, after all, immortals were surprisingly slippery creatures, with all of time on their hands and collecting more and more resources for their own best survival over time. Still, whoever (or whatever) it was, Hob didn’t feel threatened. He reached for the light switch, fingers lingering above it.

“Come out come out, wherever you are…” 

All Hob could hear— well, not hear, but it felt like his ears were picking up something— was a low hum, a rumble of the lowest possible pitch, landing on his stomach and sinking his feet on the ground like quicksand. The shadows seemed to take the light switch too, and Hob pulled his hand away quickly in reflex, before it could take him too. 

“…whoever you are, I have to tell you I have friends in high places. So why don’t you show up and we can just… you know, talk?” 

He didn’t know why he felt so certain he was actually speaking to another sentient being. The entire room seemed to shake a little, and Hob took that as a “no”. 

“Hey, hey—“ He held his hands above his head, trying his best to show he meant no harm. What a weird Friday that was turning out to be. “It’s okay! I promise you I won’t hurt you. I also don’t scare easy, you know.” 

Silence. The shadows seemed to ponder. 

“…look, let me just get some clothes from the wardrobe. I won’t turn the lights on, but I might end up having to wear something silly. You’ve been warned.” 

Hob knew the layout of his bedroom fairly well enough to find the wardrobe in the artificial darkness that surrounded him. He opened the doors slowly, trying to reach for a t-shirt and a pair of boxers. “Look, I don’t know who you are, but I don’t want to flash you, so close your eyes or… whatever you use to see.” 

At that, the shadows seemed to retreat. They moved slowly, at first, and Hob only observed from the corner of his eyes, trying not to pay too much attention. He tried his best to get dressed quickly, and shutting the wardrobe closed, he now could somewhat see where things were again. Hob let out a little relieved sigh before turning around. The only unnatural shadow left was coming from his jacket, landing on the armchair beside the window. 

“Thank you. Never thought of asking the shadows for privacy before. I’ll have to remember to do that from now on.” 

A pair of twinkling lights seemed to appear out of nowhere, and Hob tried his best not to seem startled. He approached the shadow, now somewhat resembling a man, the lights where the eyes would usually be. Hob sat on the bed, 

across from the shadow figure sitting on his armchair, and offered the best smile he could muster. “…rough day? I feel like you’re not doing very well. Don’t ask me why.” 

Are you not afraid, Hob Gadling? 

Again, he didn’t hear anyone speak. It just was there, inside his head somehow. A voice, now recognisable, low, trembling. Wounded. Hob could feel his body fill with worry, reaching out almost instantly to touch the intangible form of what he now knew to be: “Dream?!”

In true Dream fashion, and confirming Hob’s suspicions, the shadow of his stranger retreated, the twin stars Hob now knew to be eyes seeming to sparkle as eyes would widen. He didn’t know how he could understand the expressions, or even see them. He just knew they were there, and as with everything involving his strange friend, he only knew what Dream allowed him to know. So he pulled back, giving Dream his space.

You are foolish, Hob Gadling. There are a myriad of creatures that lurk in the darkness. You should not be so welcoming to them. 

“Well, none of them has done me any harm— besides, it wasn’t any creature, it’s you, you idiot.” Hob let out a sigh, brows furrowed in worry and only a sliver of annoyance. Dream was difficult at times, but the good parts far overweighed the bad. His friend was just having a bad day. “…are you hurt?” 

The diffused edges of the shadow seemed to sharpen into definition, but Hob’s question made the image get fuzzy again, as if it disturbed Dream to even think of speaking of his own state of being. Then again, presenting as a shadow had its own charge of meaning Hob’s mind wasn’t able to not see. “I don’t mean to pry, Dream. But I do worry about you.” 

…in a manner of speaking, yes. 

What was that supposed to mean?

“Physically? Emotionally?” 

I do not have a set physical form. Everything that I experience is a collection of all forms of sensory memory from every conscience in existence. Now, before, and after this very moment.

“But you do feel pain. I’ve felt pain in dreams.” 

It is unfortunate to hear you’ve experienced that, Hob. Would you wish for these dreams to be–

“Nope. I’m interrupting you right there. I’m fine, Dream. We’re talking about you here. Don’t deflect.” Hob knew not to push when it came to Dream. He was always afraid, even if just s tiny little bit, that he’d say the wrong thing and Dream would walk up and leave again. Still, he worried for him, cared more than he knew a friend should. So he swallowed his fears, in hope that Dream could swallow his own pride. “Look, I might not understand what it’s like to be… everyone everywhere at all times. But I do understand what it’s like to feel pain, hopelessness… sadness. So if you need to talk, I’m here. If you just want to sit there and… gather yourself, that’s fine too.” 

You had other engagements planned for the evening. 

“I won’t ask how you know.” Hob reached for his cellphone and turned it off, placing it face down on his bedside table. “Just cleared my schedule.” 

Silence filled the room as Hob now stretched his legs on the bed, hands resting on his abdomen. He’d glance at Dream from time to time, noticing that little by little, he could see the sharp lines of his face, the dimensions of his feathery, fluffy black hair. Little by little, his friend seemed to allow himself to be more and more present. Hob still waited in silence. 

“…the reconstruction of the Dreaming is… tiresome.” 

Hob now could see his eyes, and the gleaming of the tears forming at the edges, blue stained with redness that also spread from the tip of Dream’s nose to his cheeks and lips. It made Hob’s heart ache, seeing Dream like that. He still remained silent. 

“…I’ve lost so many of my creations. All of them, made with the utmost care… they did not believe I would return to them. Some were not strong enough to survive without my nurturing. Countless dreams and nightmares, countless mortal minds left without proper tending.” 

“…the sleepy sickness, right?” It was impossible not to interject at that point. Hob had always been curious about the period of his life with no dreams. He’d been blessed to even be able to sleep and wake up every morning, he knew that much.Dream just nodded in confirmation.

“There is still much left to do. The fragile balance of consciousness was skewed in my absence, and the damages have still not been entirely assessed.”  Dream’s voice was trembling, and Hob could see the tears streaming down his face. Still, his expression remained stern, muscles tense and back impossibly straight, as if feeling anything would tip the scales completely off. 

“…seems like an awful lot to deal with, even for an endless.” Hob kept his voice soft, looking over at Dream with what he hoped his friend could tell was sympathy and not pity. Hob could never know the true weight of Dream’s responsibilities. But he could tell how much they were crushing him just then. 

“It is the purpose of my existence, which I’m currently failing to fulfil.”  

“You are being awfully unfair to yourself, Dream. None of this is your fault. You never asked to be imprisoned. All you’re doing now is your best, and that’s all that matters.” 

Hob couldn’t help himself. Dream seemed to be fully there, enough that Hob decided to ignore his best judgement.  Got up from the bed and walked towards Dream, reaching to take his hands. Dream was startled, but did not pull away. That was a good sign. “I think maybe you need some rest. Can you sleep?” 

“…I don’t require sleep.” 

“But can you?”

“Not in the same way you do.” 

“That’s okay.” Hob smiled, pulling Dream to stand and guiding him to the bed. Hob crawled in first, holding the blanket up for Dream to join him. “These sheets are new. Really soft. I figured if I was gonna start visiting you place knowingly, I should do it in style.” 

A tiny smile appeared in Dream’s lips, who didn’t seem too reluctant to join. Maybe he was too tired to argue, or maybe he was allowing himself a little bit of rest. After all, if all the minds he had to oversee required it to continue living, then surely Dream needed to rest as well. Hob watched him as he settled on the bed, resting his head on the pillow and curling up as Hob tucked him in gently. It was impossible not to smile, really. “Do you want me to leave? I can sleep on the couch.” 

Dream was quick to answer, and it surprised Hob a little to hear him say it. “Stay.” 

“Okay. Not going anywhere then.” 

It was different, seeing Dream so vulnerable. The urge to pull him close was almost impossible to resist, to protect Dream from all the ghosts that plagued him. Hob would rebuild the Dreaming with his own hands if he could. He’d do it gladly if it meant his friend would get some peace of mind. Now, he seemed a little less sad, and that was something. The vision of Dream laying down on his bed, with his head resting on his pillow was something he’d need to file into his memory to appreciate later on. 

The silence between them stretched, until it was filled by the sound of tiny little sobs, that turned into crying. Then, Hob couldn’t possibly hold himself back from trying to comfort him. He let his arms wrap around Dream’s slender, seemingly frail body. Dream didn’t seem to resist him, grabbing Hob’s shirt with his hands, holding tightly onto the fabric as his tears streamed down his cheeks. Hob let one of his hands go to Dream’s back, rubbing circles with his palm, trying his best to soothe him. He shushed softly, while his other hand found the back of Dream’s head, letting his fingers card trough silken black hair. 

Hob didn’t tell Dream to stop crying. He waited, feeling the fabric of his shirt get wet with tears, accepting it gladly. He wasn’t sure of how much time went by, but soon, the sobbing stopped, and Dream’s eyes seemed to be closed. His breathing evened, slowing down to a relaxed pace, as did his heartbeat. Dream was, for all intended purposes, asleep. Hob pressed a kiss to the top of his friend’s head, and stayed there, as he was, holding the universe and all the shadows projected by the stars in his arms. Humanity could wait a little. They all could do with some rest.

🤔 what is the hardest part of writing fanfiction?

Hello! <3

Oh man... for me it's patience. I often times get so excited writing something that I'll just post the first draft without waiting a day to edit it. And then I reread it the next day and it's just awful. I wont even have the patience to go back and edit it cos it's, ya know, already posted so.

I've proven to myself time and time again that if I hold off posting! If I just sleep on it and come back to the document with fresh eyes! It WILL be better and most importantly, I'll like it and feel proud of it.

⭐cancer placements allow themselves to feel their emotions. they may get annoyed by the intensity or the amount of them, but they process them fully, and this makes it easier for them to move on. random thought but writing letters to people they like may be something they do or did as kids haha. they're very romantic

⭐mars in libra avoid conflicts and try to be reasonable about everything, but if they think you crossed a line, you'll see why aries is their sister sign pretty soon. once they tell you off, you'll never see them the same way, so underrestimate them at your cost

⭐having stelliums can be interesting. it for sure puts a lot of emphasis on the influence of that house on your life, and i found that it can be both positive and negative since they face lots of challenges related to their house but also many blessings. those who have stelliums kind of embody multiple characteristics simultaneously

⭐sun in the 11th people glow when they are with their closest friends. they also tend to dream big and care a lot about the world. their friends usually help them in their future goals. they feel a bit different than people in their hometown/country, mostly because they cannot be tied down to a single culture because they enjoy different things, which usually makes them quite open-minded and tolerant. they can be picky about the people they let in super close though

if you have strong mutable (gemini, sagittarius, pisces, virgo) placements then you NEED to write things down if you don't already. all those thoughts that constantly swirl in your head: the frequent tasks, goals, feelings, aspirations, opinions, etc - WRITE THEM DOWN. this is not only therapeutic & stress-relieving for you but almost necessary, or you're going to burn out and overload your own mind constantly.

when you bottle, or when you let plans, goals, dreams, to-do lists, projects, etc live solely in your head - you'll notice you can't sleep as well, it's harder to rest, your memory gets more foggy than usual, you feel burnt out and unable to connect, etc. specifically:

write down your feelings. this will be your ultimate (free) therapy. start to journal, write a diary. make a private twitter/tumblr where you spill your feelings, frustrations, thoughts. you will feel an immense sense of relief by writing or typing your feelings out - even if no one is reading it but you. mutable moons especially. our feelings tend to change rapidly, but it doesn't make them less valid. don't bottle out of the fear your feelings will change/you'll just "get over it"!! write it down and let it out!!

write! to-do! lists!!!!! these don't have to be for important things. you want to learn digital art? you want to study coding? you want to learn french? you want to re-decorate? you probably have a billion things you want to do, and then you get overwhelmed by the options, and do nothing. write down all the things you want to do. make a to-do list for these things. get them out of your head and somewhere permanent/physical. looking at the options in front of you will feel much easier.

make excel project trackers (you can even make these for to-do list items/goals/etc)! mutable placements have a tendency to start a lot of projects or tasks, and never finish any of them. make a simple tracker for all the projects you start. you won't forget what you're working on, and you'll be less overwhelmed trying to remember what you have going on (example of the one i always use pictured below)

talking out your thoughts and feelings is also very cathartic. make fake (or real, i support u!) youtube vlogs where you spill your feelings and talk about your plans, your day, what you have to do, etc. talk to someone you love and trust, vent to them about how things are; or about what you're getting up to. i find writing has an edge, because you can go back to it for reference (mutables tend to forget things easily) - but as long as you're getting the swirl of your mind somewhere outside of your head, you'll feel so, so much less stressed.

mutable dominants tend to constantly live in go-mode, we're restless and always doing something. we feel uncomfortable and sometimes guilty about staying still. our minds don't ever shut off. it's very important for mutable placements to learn how to rest, be present in the moment, and learn grounding. this can be done in many ways, but i've found personally that writing works best for me. other helpful practices can be: talk therapy, acceptance theory, yoga, meditation, hiking, camping, etc.

i also want to remind mutable signs: we change a lot. we have a lot of ideas. there's so much we want to do. we often feel like we have no path, no big goal; we can struggle with purpose as we don't often aspire for permanent things or "one big goal". this is NOT bad. there is nothing wrong with changing your feelings, your mind, your goals, your life path. you CAN do all the things you want to do! you have your entire life ahead of you! yes, you can learn all those languages. yes, you can have three different careers in your life. yes yes yes! don't listen to negativity from others. don't beat yourself up for not having one big goal like some people around you might. cherish and embrace all the things you want to achieve and complete (both big and small). learn to follow-through with and finish the things that matter to you (writing things down will really help with this, make action plans/steps - break everything down into smaller pieces). take the time to slow down and enjoy the moments as they come. you got this!

Mercury was the messenger of the Gods. He was essential to the communication and diplomacy between the realms. Each one trusted him. So, of course he knew them all well... and their dirty laundry.

🐍 Is it no wonder why they seem to know just about everybody and everybody’s business? Do not deny it, Virgo. LOL👀

Although they held more power individually, Mercury held the power of being their collective voice! (Also rules oration) They entrusted him with how and what was said on their behalf… often being a literal translator. (Powerful!)

This is similar to situations many Geminis and Virgos find themselves in. Many will come to you for advice and insert you into their dealings.👀 (As the middleman.)

Geminis on a social level and Virgos often within the family and relationships.

The Gods' divine trust came with plenty of gifts, which you’ll also find true of lovers in this lifetime. People value you and your gifts, which gives you purpose. (A virgo's dream.)

The most significant gift given to Mercury, was perhaps his trademark wand or staff... known as

"The Caduceus"

Per the Greco-Roman mythology, the caduceus was gifted to him by the Sun God, Apollo. A magical olive branch staff with two serpents intertwining around its base.

They say if it touched the dying, it blessed them with a gentle death. However, when applied to the deceased… they would literally return to life. (DUALITY!)

You’ve probably noticed this symbol at our hospitals, on our ambulances, etc.

I like to believe these two snakes themselves are yet another symbol of Mercury’s duality.

One is good and the other bad. One yin. Other yang. One Virgo and One Gemini👀

🐍Mercury was also known as the trickster God or God of thievery!

This is essential to note because I have a theory (possibly far-fetched, but makes so much sense) that this may have a connection to a certain Garden of Eden… where a certain serpent spoke to a certain woman and convinced her to eat the fruit of …. KNOWLEDGE. 🤯

They say that before the caduceus had it's powers, it was just a branch. Mercury was stuck in servitude to the God's.

But…what if… Mercury being the trickster God convinced the maiden (virgo) to bite of the the fruit of knowledge in the forbidden garden and gained a portion of the powers of Mercury that he did not want.

If Virgo took on the need to serve, then Mercury would be free to frolick the realms with his tricks and thievery. He was also remarked as a habitual line-stepper, or boundary-crosser. (This is unevolved Gemini energy all the way)

This really gets deep when you realize that Virgo's sister sign Pisces (whom in my Neptune post, I compared to Persephone) bit of the fruit of Hades in the same curious fashion and was in more or less words cursed!

This does not mean that being of service is a curse in any way, but honestly, the mythology behind this dual planet is fascinating.

I think Virgo actually bossed her side of the energy up to the max. She is the earthy incarnation of her own genius, often never showing just how intelligent she really is... so as not to reveal her cards.

Virgo can bring her wildest ideas to fruition within the Earthy realm! (After it's perfected to her liking of course.) A gift!

However, Virgo can also have some trickery within her nature… often appearing or putting on a more innocent act than she really is.

But, with Mercurian energy there is always the possibility for their beautiful thoughts to come out a bit... wrong.

This brings me to a very important note.

It’s inevitable honestly, as people can’t help but give knowledge to a heavenly messenger.

˚₊· ͟͟͞͞➳❥ chart ruler in 12th house can suggest you moving abroad ( i had my chart ruler- moon in 12th house conjunct Jupiter (travel, foreign) when i moved to a completely new country. also my 12th house was in Gemini which rules over travel and trips so that enhanced it).

˚₊· ͟͟͞͞➳❥ i had my 12th house packed with planetary objects (venus, northnode, uranus, sun, mercury and moon) and that year i was not doing too good with my overall mental health HOWEVER, i was very spiritually inclined that year, i started to develop habits related to spirituality.

˚₊· ͟͟͞͞➳❥ the year that i studied my a** off i had a SR virgo rising and mercury (the ruler) in 10th house in gemini (knowledge, mind, writing). i wrote alottt like loads and loads of notes for my exams.

A hole appeared in the heart of the Dreaming.

Dreams, nightmares and other residents gathered around the crater, horrified and in awe of something they’d only seen before when the last vortex appeared. It couldn’t be another one, not so soon.

The hole appeared after one of Dream’s visits to the New Inn. He’d been on a pretty good mood for the past couple of months, having restored the Dreaming to its former glory. Things with his siblings were mostly in order, and he was becoming a little less shut in. Listening to others and being more open to change was difficult, but it was an effort worth making. Seeing his subjects happy brought a warm feeling inside that he wasn’t sure he remembered. Being loved, not feared. However, the sunshine would not last for long.

“There’s no recorded evidence of this phenomena, my Lord.” Lucienne hated not being able to bring Morpheus a solution. She had a hypothesis about what might have caused the crater, but wouldn’t dare say it out loud. It could make things worse. “…do you think… Desire, perhaps?”

“They wouldn’t be so foolish as to cross me. Not for a long time. The answer lies somewhere else.” The words felt heavy on his tongue, tiring to speak aloud. Whatever could be causing this, it made him feel helpless.

Morpheus couldn’t help but frown at her tone. The shadow of his cruelty still lingered around the edges of his mercurial behaviour. “There’s no need to apologise for speaking your mind. Please, go ahead.”

“…if the solution to this issue is not presenting itself through what we already know… maybe it’s time to search inwards for an answer.”

“…hm. That is… something to be considered.”

“…often times, the most difficult solutions to find are the ones hiding in plain sight, my Lord.”

“Very well.” Morpheus stood, fixing the collar of his coat and reaching for the pouch of sand on his pocket. “Please resume your research through the texts in the library. I shall ask for an outside opinion.”

Lucienne raised her eyebrows, and a spark of hope lit up inside her. “…might I ask who, my Lord?”

“Someone less short sighted than myself.”

It wasn’t common for Hob Gadling to spend his Saturday evenings in, but in that particular November day, the cold had gotten the best of him. He was wearing his snuggliest sweaters, wrapped around his warmest blanket, with a mug of tea in hands as he settled in bed to read.

The sound of knocking on his bedroom door nearly made him spill the tea on himself. At least he’d be warmer, right?

“…Hob Gadling, may I come in?”

Ah, of course.

When Dream began visiting Hob more often, he thought it would be a good idea to invite his friend to come to his flat too. There they’d have more privacy, more time to talk. There was a selfishness to it too, not wanting to share Dream’s presence with anyone else. Not risk the interruption of a colleague or the possibility of another bright creative mind stealing Dream’s attention from him.

Inviting Dream to visit him at his home came with an interesting perk: he’d just show up. At the flat. In the flat. Hob would blink and an empty chair would be filled by his stranger. Look up at a reflective surface to find him looking for a book he certainly had a hand in inspiring right behind him, and, on one very particular occasion, Dream seemed to gather his form from the shadow of Hob’s jacket that was hanging from a hook on his bedroom door. That had been a strange night, one they spent in silence as a shapeless Dream tried to gather himself back into what Hob now knew was just one of the many faces his stranger wore.

Hob stood from the bed, setting his tea aside on the bedside table, rushing towards the door. He might have wanted to seem upset, but it was impossible. Not when those Crystal clear blue eyes seemed to be asking for a friendly shoulder. “My friend, I remember asking you to use the door.”

Dream’s brows furrowed, seeming almost offended that Hob would question his actions. He did use the door, just not the right one. “I did. Is this not what you meant?”

“—nevermind, I should have been more specific. To what to do I owe the pleasure of your company?”

“I am aware of what you meant. This is not the front door, but… I was afraid you might not answer.”

Hob didn’t know Dream to be one to hesitate, or admit that he was wrong. The look in his eyes made Hob’s chest tighten with worry, and suddenly the door debacle felt silly in comparison. Now, he hoped he hadn’t driven Dream away. “…is something wrong, my friend?”

Dream took a long moment to answer, standing awkwardly at Hob’s bedroom door. He looked vulnerable. Whatever it was, it must have taken quite a lot of trust for him to come over. “…I was hoping you could help me. It is matter of utmost importance to myself and the Dreaming alike. If you’re amenable.”

“Of course! Anything you need, Dream.” Hob didn’t mean to sound so eager, but the idea of being able to help his friend with his cosmic scale responsibilities made him feel like he was finally giving back to Dream for the life he’d been allowed to live. “I’ll get you a cup of tea, alright? It will get that frown right off your pretty face—”

“I would much prefer to stay here.”

“…at the door?”

“In the bedroom, Robert Gadling. Where is warmer. I am perfectly capable of noticing the humane needs of your form. While it doesn’t affect me, it is clear that the temperature is inadequate for you.”

Smug bastard, that’s what he is. And while Dream sounds offended, the little smirk on his lips tells Hob he’s very much enjoying being a prick. Hob shakes his head, unable to keep himself from smiling. “Alright, come in then. I’ll share my blanket with you.”

Dream sat next to Hob on the bed, legs crossed over the blankets that Hob very much preferred to hide underneath. While he was trying his best to focus, it was nearly impossible to take a glance at Hob every now and then, with his brown hair falling loosely around his face and his elbow propped up on the pillow, holding up his head and smushing his cheek with his calloused palm.

Hob cleared his throat, snapping Dream’s wandering mind back into the waking. “…so, what is this problem so difficult you had to bring it to the most brilliant mind in the Waking World?”

Dream’s lips curled into the faintest ghost of a smirk, but it was very much there, and he knew better than to try and hide his amusement at Hob’s particular brand of humour. “…a crater has appeared in the heart of the Dreaming.”

Hob quickly sat up, brows furrowing in clear worry. Dream had told him, at length, of Desire’s plotting over the millennia to cause Dream’s demise. “…a crater? Like when Rose—“

Dream lifted a hand, interrupting Hob’s anxious rambling before it could disturb his thoughts even more than it already had. “No. Similar in appearance, but not the same. There will not be another dream vortex for at least another generation. This is… something else. Lucienne suggested the solution to this issue might be hidden in plain sight.”

“Did she say anything else? Maybe something less riddler and more direct instruction?”

Finally, it came time for the part he’d come to Hob for assistance. “…me and the Dreaming are one and the same. Lucienne suggested I should… perhaps, look inward for insight.”

Hob lifted his brows in surprise, going silent for a bit. He seemed to be scrambling for an answer, before his lips curled into what seemed like a very pleased smile. “Dream.”

“Yes, Hob?”

“Dream.”

“…Hob.”

“Morpheus.”

“Are you taking enjoyment from my plight, Robert Gadling? Must I to seek counsel elsewhere?”

Hob was quite enjoying himself, it seemed, but he did his best to hold back his laughter, pulling the ever so serious but kind demeanour he saved for his students in his lectures. “Morpheus. Tell me again where the crater is located.”

“In the heart of the Dreaming.”

“Alright. A crater in the heart of the Dreaming. Now, tell me another word for crater.”

“…there are many words synonymous to crater in the English language.”

Hob rolled his eyes, but even in that, he was incredibly endearing. “I’m looking for one word specifically. Come on duck, it’s half the mark.”

Dream didn’t like being treated like a clueless apprentice, but he did like challenges, and something inside him did backflips when Hob called him duck. “…I suppose hole could be a substitute in this particular instance.”

“Yes! Yes, Dream! You’re getting closer.” Hob’s hands ran through his brown hair, and now he was very much in his teaching energy. How one could be so intelligent and so… endearing, was beyond Dream’s understanding. “A hole in the heart of the Dreaming.”

“Yes, Hob. I believe this has been an established piece of information for quite a while.”

“—Morpheus, the answer is hidden in plain sight. You and the Dreaming, one and the same.”

“Robert, speak your mind this instant or I’ll be left no choice but to scour your brain for it.” Dream wasn’t sure what had overcome him. If shame, anger or nervousness, the amount of time spent in his corporeal form getting to him. Hob was startled for a moment, eyes wide and mouth gaping open. Dream was quick to reach for Hob’s hands, holding them firmly. “I’m sorry, Hob. I didn’t mean—”

“It’s alright, no need to worry duck.” Hob smiled. Most importantly, he didn’t let go of Dream’s hands. Again, something was doing backflips and somersaults inside his very corporeal body. “Morpheus, it’s a metaphor. A hole in the heart of the Dreaming means there’s a hole… in your heart, figuratively speaking. I guess figurative takes literal form in your realm, as do dreams.”

It was Dream’s turn to be surprised. He was right in choosing Hob to help him figure out this particular mystery, but was not expecting to have a truth unveiled that he wouldn’t be able to look away from. He was quick to let go of Hob’s hands, break the physical bond that was creating a direct line to his metaphorical heart. It was aching. Bad. “…a hole, in my heart?”

“It’s more common than you think.” Hob’s expression was so gentle, eyes so filled with understanding, that when he took Dream’s hands back in his, it felt like the utmost relief that their bond was not so easily broken. “Lucienne did well, telling you to look inwards. Heartache is something that can get real nasty real quick.”

“…heartache.” Dream repeated it to himself, as if getting used to the bittersweet taste of longing. Yes, that was exactly what it was. Heartache.

“…but it’s good that we’ve got that figured out. Now, we just need to find a way to fill it.”

“…to fill the hole in my heart?” Bold of Hob to assume it would be possible. So, so bold of him to think that if Dream did act on his desires, the whole universe wouldn’t crumble to bits and pieces.

“Well, yes, Dream. You might be a brooding, self-righteous, prideful prick. But you are deserving of love. And certainly, whoever it is your heart aches for, would be lucky to be able to give it to you.”

Dream saw in Hob’s face a smile he did not miss seeing. A self-deprecating, sad smile he’d worn in 1889 when Dream was too hard headed to accept his own shortcomings, his suffocating loneliness. He looked down at their hands, linked together, and squeezed gently, before letting his eyes fall prey to Hob’s gaze once again. “…I shouldn’t be so lucky as to receive the affections of the one who would be able to… complete the emptiness I’m plagued by. It would disturb the balance of all that is good, having them descend to my level. My previous attachments have ended rather catastrophically, Hob. If… if this crater has appeared now, I cannot anticipate what would happen if—”

Hob shook his head, disbelief at Dream’s words. He knew of the responsibilities of the Endless, but the universe they lived in couldn’t possibly be so cruel as to leave love out of Dream’s cards. “There you go with the self righteous bullshit again. Who do you have a crush on, capital G-O-D?”

Hob looked at Dream with so much kindness it hurt. It felt like the crater would make its way through, like a well sharpened sword cutting trough the flesh of the enemy. Dream would allow Hob to slay him over and over if it pleased him. “He wouldn’t be worthy of you, that’s for sure. Whoever the bastard is, I hope you introduce me so I can have the shovel talk. Might even ask your sister over to help.”

“…it would be useless.” Dream knew better than to indulge himself. He knew better than to hope for love. Hope for happiness. He knew better, his body ached and tried to anchor him in his rules and believes. His heart, however, longed for affection. To be whole again. “He seems quite sure no shovels shall ever cross his path.”

“Oh, really? So he is immortal. The shovel will need to be something else, then. A magical artefact? Can I use the Ruby? Just this once? I promise I won’t do the bastard any harm—“

“Come on, duck. It’s half the mark.”

Hob’s eyes widened in surprise once again, and Dream could notice, even in the dimly lit room, the redness of Hob’s cheeks, flushing up to the tips of his ears. It made Dream smile. A true smile, saved only for Hob’s eyes. “…it’s a metaphor, isn’t it?”

The seconds stretched into hours, and a billion thoughts rushed through his mind. Hob would be his ruin, he was certain of it. His, and of a thousand universes were they to cross paths in any capacity of existence. Dream could die and live again a thousand times over, and Hob Gadling would always be the end of him.

But then again, in his endlessness, endings are always new beginnings. So he would, just this once, allow himself to be selfish again.

“It is.”

When their lips finally crashed, after 600 years of longing, Dream felt like he’d really been reborn. Hob kissed him gently, with both hands cupping his cheeks carefully as if he was made of the finest glass, a holy object of adoration. His arms were strong but careful in bringing Dream close, holding him under the covers, showering him with kisses and tangling their legs together, whispering sweet nothings into the ear of the King of Dreams that would certainly inspire many creations to come. In the end, they’d spent hours and hours together, holding each other, admiring the beauty of love finally found, finally accepted.
