Funktorium Vibranium: Wrapping up my session to the sounds of Steely Dan. I found this ravaged looking copy of this album in a free box of wax yrs ago. Turns out the vinyl was in decent condition & that it would contain my favorite cut by them, The Fez. In the history of American alternative media, independent (or experimental) film & video-makers have been materializing their audiovisual language and forms in an uneasy relationship with mainstream media’s narrative and aesthetic conventions of reinforcing the sense of the reality built upon the dominant measures of seeing the world. Far beyond the mere inclusion of the sensorially distorting or semiotically elliptical sequences within the more accepted format and grammar, these artists endeavored to cast the alternative figures, sensations, tales, and documents of the world by turning to the format of medium itself and its materiality to challenge the ways of sensing the surface encircling the world that we believe to live in. In this vein, they were attracted also to low-resolution mediums – “poor mediums,” so to speak – such as Super 8, Pixelvision, ASCII, and VinylVideo that are no longer produced due to their technological inferiority for the commercial standards of taxonomizing and mapping the world. Pixelvision or the PXL 2000, initially conceived as children’s toy camcorder in 1987 by Fisher-Price Toy Company, was discontinued three years later for its unattractively noisy output due to its recording mediums: a myopic plastic camera and a regular audio cassette tape. However, some risk-taking independent artists in the ’90s tested this failed tool and utilized the unfashionably compressed, sandy, colorless imagery in hopes of attenuating the privileged realism of up-to-date media, concerning how media archives the portrayal and cartography of the world.

Mondo, the company that produces high-quality, limited edition posters, collectibles, apparels, and more, is bring the Castlevania: Symphony of the Night soundtrack to vinyl. The 2XLP will be available on October 24 and is being released in partnership with Castlevania developer and publisher Konami.

“Originally released for the Playstation 2, Symphony of the Night is considered one of the most essential video games of all time, and one of the parents of the genre now known as the ‘Metroidvania,'” Mondo says. “The story follows Alucard, the son of Dracula, directly after the events of Rondo of Blood, and his attempt to stop his father’s castle’s sudden reappearance.

“This double LP features 41 tracks from the game (including seven bonus tracks from the Sega Saturn version of the game) all remastered for vinyl, and featuring all new original artwork by Jasmin Darnell.”

The soundtrack will be available on three different colorways: 2x 180 Gram Black, Gold, and Bone. The bone version is limited to 1,000 copies. It’s also available in Gram Bone or Silver Swirl with a white splatter, or a Gram Translucent Red colored vinyl, which will be available at record stores. The Black, Gold, and Bone (limited), and Bone/Silver Swirl with white splatter, meanwhile, will be available at MondoTees.com. Each of these vinyls will be priced at $ 35 and you can see images of them below.

The next few weeks are going to be quite Castlevania heavy, which will no doubt be welcoming to fans of the series, who have been underserved as of late. On October 26, Season 2 of Netflix’s Castlevania animated series will be available to stream. It is once more written by acclaimed comic book writer Warren Ellis, with Richard Armitage reprising his role as Trevor Belmont.

Also on October 26, Konami will launch Castlevania Requiem on PlayStation 4. This digital release will have Castlevania: Symphony of the Night and Rondo of Blood in one package. Both titles are their original releases emulated for the PlayStation 4, with updates that take advantage of the new hardware. These updates include 4K/1080p upscaling, multiple high resolution backgrounds, different rendering options such as smoothing and full Trophy support.

Sadly, the version of Symphony of the Night included in this package is based on the PSP release that was included in Castlevania: The Dracula X Chronicles. This version, though faithful to the PlayStation original in most respects, removes the iconic “What is a man?” moment from the game, which has come to be quite beloved in the Castlevania fan community.

Week 5: Forum

After having read about the examples in "An Infinite Seance Part 2", what do you think it means for new media artworks to "satisfy that thirst for media-specific art and still fit perfectly into the current trends"? Amidst the constant everchanging sprouts of new media formats, artists are also fascinated by old media formats like the vinyl LPs and have used these fossil forms of media to create art that is creative and relevant today. More than relevancy, most installations are in line with the latest trends like "retro" in Sengmüller's vinylvideo. It seems like these artworks rehash various media forms and work around it to produce trendy pieces that intrigues people and create new meanings out of old and outdated media formats.  To what extent do you agree that the open source movement is reminiscent of a Marxist revolution, and why? I agree to a large extent! The open source movement promotes the free movement of the production and dissemination of creative content and this is very similar to the Marxist cultural revolution. For the most part, the movement focuses on the underclass having access and this social transformation to ensure access is the underlying principle of a Marxist revolution.  What do you think is the particular role that 3D printing has in the critique and imagination of radical futures? The ease of use for 3D printing is set to catalyse this innovation into the daily lives of people. The machine is already gaining popularity amongst professionals, artists and every day people. Although it would have impact on the environment due to its use of plastic, is there a way for us to ensure that the plastic use releases lesser toxins into the environment? I believe that this is definitely possible and only when such an alternative is available, it should be made widely available similar to how we have printing shops all over town.  How do you think glitches can be useful in asking critical questions and generating creative solutions? Glitches, in my eyes, are essentially small failures in the world of technology. Similar to how failures led to innovations that aimed at making our lives easier (say the creation of lightbulbs and telephones), these glitches present as opportunities to generating solutions that are a mile away from being conventional. As what was discussed in the video, various artists have utilised glitches to raise questions on the manipulation of digital media and has even landed a glitch artist a job with Facebook to debug their site. As with every other problem gathered from the physical world, it should work in parallell with the digital world and is set to generate creative solutions.
