These are my two favorite preamps. They are both great for recording with microphones as well as DI duties. 

In particular, I like using the 512c for DI electric guitar, because nothing else gives such a snappy response. It is also my go-to for recording vocals, and especially percussion. 

The 573 is my favorite for electric bass. It's not that the other 500 series pre's lack gain, it's just that this one has an extra output knob that adds just enough character (if you want it) to give a little something extra to a bass signal. It's also great for vocals if a little extra harmonic content is desired. Incidentally, the 573 seems to handle the upper register harmonic distortion of my Rhodes Electric Piano the best-- it smooths it out a little resulting in extended clarity.
