Another ‘Grace in the church of the starry children’ AU snippet!!
Part 1
Summary: In one timeline, Grace and her family are still highly devoted to their religion, but they worship entirely different Gods (or, rather, Lords) and have to be a little more hush-hush about it. Her old family friend, Uncle Wiley, brings her two special gifts for her eighteenth birthday: a cool, authentic vintage denim jacket from the eighties and her very own copy of the black book. She promises to use it sparingly until she’s older and she’s had more practice, but when Brenda, the pretty cheerleader at school with an obvious crush on her, confides in her that she’d do anything to get back her sister who disappeared, Grace decides to make an exception for her.
Brenda spends the rest of the lunch period totally not staring at Grace and wondering if she’s drawing strange, occult symbols or writing deep, sad poetry that shows a hidden sensitive side. At one point, Grace looks up and they lock eyes for a moment. Shit, busted! Brenda smiles and waves at her and Grace looks a little taken aback for a second before she reciprocates the smile in a way that’s so awkward it’s sort of charming and waves back, then once again buries her face in her notebook. She’s so high off her two victories today - talking to Grace and getting her to crack a smile - that she can barely hear the story Kyle’s telling.
“…and then my dad made me work, like, every day after school and all through summer to pay for the damage to that Ski-doo,” he says. Brenda blinks, realizing how hard she’s been spacing out.
“Oh, that’s, uh, great,” she says absently.
“Ha, yeah it was!” Max says “see, Brenda gets it.” Kyle glares at him, but can’t say anything back. He sulks quietly until the bell rings again and they all go their separate ways, occasionally shooting a longing glance Brenda’s way that goes unnoticed.
Grace spends her afternoon classes with her head in the clouds. She’s too preoccupied thinking about Uncle Wiley possibly coming by tonight and replaying those interactions with Brenda in her head to pay much attention. She’s never particularly cared about her grades and her parents never push the issue, so long as she isn’t flunking any classes (they’re always saying that they won’t matter in the long run and there are more important things at stake), but considering that almost nobody will talk to her unless forced, she often doesn’t have much to do other than her schoolwork. This has netted her a solid B average and generally, she doesn’t find it too difficult to maintain. She can perform pretty well on a test with minimal studying. Really, memorizing that information isn’t much different than memorizing spells and rituals. Occasionally, a teacher will chide her for spacing out or “forgetting” (not bothering with) her homework, but they leave her alone for the most part. Even the staff here are a little frightened of her.
At long last, she arrives at home and she’s ecstatic when she enters the living room and sees Uncle Wiley seated there with her parents, mugs of steaming hot tea in hand.
“Uncle Wiley!” she shouts, practically running over to him and throwing her arms around him.
“Well, hello there, Gracie,” he says with a grin that some judgmental people might characterize as sinister. Grace knows better, though. That’s just how he smiles. “Today’s the big day, huh? You’re all grown up.”
“That’s right,” she says proudly. She frowns when she pulls back and notices the cuts dotting his face, most notably a nasty gash right above his lips. She looks at his hands and sees that his finger’s been placed in a splint and on his forearm is the beginnings of what’s sure to become a really bad bruise.
“You’re hurt,” she says “you disinfected those cuts, right? You don’t want them to fester and turn into sepsis and slowly, painfully kill you! You should really cover them to keep them clean.”
He chuckles. “All good, Gracie. That meeting today was really more of a …sparring session, let’s say. You think I look bad, you should see the other guy!”
He and her parents all laugh at that, as if they’re sharing some sort of inside joke.
“But enough about me,” he continues “today’s all about the birthday girl, right? I have some gifts for you…souvenirs from today.”
Grace lights up. “Really?”
He hands her two bright green gift bags, each adorned with a curly, flowing ribbon of the same color that almost looks like tentacles. He instructs her to open the larger one first, because the smaller one is really special.
She does as he asks, reaching into the big bag and pulling out an oversized denim jacket. She runs her hands over it, marveling at the solid construction and how it doesn’t feel rough or scratchy at all. She’s very picky about her denim and this is practically custom made for her.
“Almost kept it for myself, but I thought you’d wear it better,” he says.
“Wow, thank you, Uncle Wiley,” she says, eagerly slipping on the jacket. She’s going to decorate it with so many pins and patches.
“Alright, now the second one,” he says “took some convincing for your folks to let me give you this one, but it’s like I always say, you have the potential to do great things. You need the right tools to harness it.”
She removes the tissue paper from the bag and reaches in, her eyes going wide when she feels the leather beneath her fingers. It seems to be some type of book. Can it be? There’s no way. When she slowly lifts the object out and sees the black cover and the familiar symbol, her wildest hopes and dreams are confirmed.
“Oh, wow,” she says in awe, drawing out the word “for real? My very own copy? Are you sure?”
“Well, you’re a young woman now. I’d say it’s about time. Besides, the original owner don’t have much of a use for it.” He and her parents laugh again.
“Thank you, Uncle Wiley,” she squeals, throwing her arms around him once more, a bit more gingerly than last time to avoid aggravating his injuries “thank you, thank you, thank you! This is the best birthday ever!”
“Just make sure to use it responsibly, dear,” Karen says “it’s a powerful thing.”
“Oh, mother, you worry too much,” says Mark “we weren’t much older when we did our first summonings and rituals. You remember those days?”
“Oh, we hardly did anything earth-shattering,” Karen says, swatting at him playfully.
“We sure tried,” Uncle Wiley adds.
Karen smiles. “Oh, the good old days,” she says “where does the time go? Anyways, all I’m saying is she should be careful and use it sparingly, just until she’s a little older and she’s had more practice.”
“Yes, yes, you’re right, my dear,” Mark concedes “promise to use it responsibly and not rely on it too much, at least until you’re more experienced with it, alright, Gracie?”
“I promise,” Grace says.
They sit down to dinner. Grace’s mother made her world famous lasagna, Grace’s all-time favorite. At Grace’s insistence, Uncle Wiley and her parents regale her with tales from the wild days of their youth. It’s so strange to hear about, almost like they’re talking about entirely different people, because her parents seem like such normal, boring adults now. It seems like they had so much fun in those days. They were an inseparable trio, them against the world. It sounds kind of nice, honestly. It’s not that Grace minds being alone. She likes quiet. She likes having alone time to think. Still, sometimes she thinks it would be nice to have somebody to share it with like they did. She wonders if she’ll find that someday. She thinks back to her conversation with Brenda today. She’s not sure why it popped into her head.
Eventually, Uncle Wiley has to head out. Grace hugs him goodbye, thanks him again for the gifts and emphatically reminds him to look after his cuts. She stays up way later than she should, curled up in bed with a flashlight, poring over each page, reading each spell over and over and over again and trying to absorb every bit of information she can. Eventually, exhaustion overtakes her, her eyelids grow too heavy to hold open and she falls asleep curled up with the book, the flashlight still shining. At some point, she stirs awake for a moment and feels somebody draping a blanket over her and carefully removing the flashlight from her hands. She blinks and murmurs before rolling over and going back to sleep, still clutching the book.

39 and 41 for the "these are actually hella fucking cute y'all" asks pls
39. What color do you wear the most?
Besides different shades of grey (I wear a lot of grey joggers and t-shirts) I wear a lot of red. I probably have 9 red t-shirts of a very similar shade. My favorite sweaters are red or maroon, and I regularly wear a pair of maroon converse (or burgundy or whatever), as well as a red flannel shirt and a vintage red ski jacket.
41. What is the last book you remember really loving?
Meddling Kids by Edward Cantero. It’s an homage to Scooby Doo about a group of kids who solved mysteries as children, but now they’re grown up and they’ve gone their separate ways. The story is about them dealing with their trauma and other struggles when they reunite one last time to reopen their final case, which turns out to be much bigger than they thought. Despite the serious premise, it’s also very sweet and funny at times, and a touch gay. 10/10.

Best Snowmobiles Of 2020
Every year our Team Geekwake after evaluating snowmobiles to the upcoming season, Snow Goer titles its Best 10 snowmobiles or snow scooters of this season, alongside the Snowmobile Of The Year.
To see additional analysis of these and other machines, plus aftermarket product reviews, include touring tales, how-to articles, vintage flashbacks, riding destinations, and a whole lot more, subscribe into Snow Goer magazine.
For 30 years, Snow Goer has called a Snowmobile of the Year, an option that has yearly led to also and much fanfare occasional debate. Supporters of the winning brand like to gloat about our selection, while backers of the manufacturers really like to tell us we're mistaken!
Less contentious but finally both important is our annual Snowmobiles listing. Our staff identifies that the machines that best match desires and the needs of cyclists in various sections of the market.
These will be the 10 machines that stand out and -- when added to the collections are one of the 300 best snowmobiles built in the previous 3 decades. For more, visit Geekwake.
Ski-Doo Expedition Xtreme 850 E-TEC
https://geekwake.com/best-electric-scooter-for-5-year-old-kids/
Already dominant in the utility segment, luxury was gone by Ski-Doo with its new Expedition lineup, along with the Xtreme $850 E-TEC is the bunch's very capable.
Found at a beefed-up variant of the REV Gen4 chassis and powered by the dynamic 850 E-TEC double, the Expedition Xtreme can pull off weight and haul gear like a utility sled; haul the mail farther down the trail like a supreme touring device; and float in powder almost as well as a Summit.
From its silent and effective driveline system -- such as transmission cutting edge monitor, and chaincase technology -- to its collection of custom accessories, this boy is the epitome of a go-anywhere, do-anything snowmobile. For more visit Geekwake.
Polaris 850 Switchback Assault
Look up"Outrageous Fun" in the snowmobiler's abridged dictionary, and you should see a picture of the Switchback Assault. On paths or off, in the woods, ditches, fields, or hillsides, for riders who like to have a little rowdy when there is not a sled that is more amusing.
The way it delivers electricity from the 850 search-engine, transfers weight and reacts to rider inputs -- it does all in an instant, allowing helmeted daredevils to jump over obstacles, lift skis on climbs in the trail, carve in a meadow or burst across a frozen river top. If its indicator had a setting for SPM (smiles per second ), it might often be pegged.
Arctic Cat M 8000 Mountain Cat Alpha One
It won Snowmobile of the Year honors a year ago due to its revolutionary design; because it works it returns as a seed in 2020! Backcountry Ability is redefined which allows riders play without limitations in powder and to split.
Tilt and it's super easy to initiate on a single ski, making powder turns, side-hilling, and glancing between trees simple and enjoyable for experts and newcomers.
Its main problem could be that some people over-ride it projecting too much effort into a turn instead of permitting the machine to create the fun with you with subtle inputs. For more, visit Geekwake.
Ski-Doo Renegade X-RS 850 E-TEC
It's the game's best factory rear suspension (rMotion), with the best shocks that the brand provides (KYB Pros) using the easiest adjustment system (the Quick-Adjust bundle ).
It also has the best injection system (E-TEC), the most straightforward running big-bore two-stroke engine (Rotax 850), the best adjustable handlebar system (Forward Adjustable Riser) and best fit-and-finish (REV Gen4).
With that many advantages, how could the Renegade X-RS 850 be missed if naming the 10 snowmobiles? It can't because the total is even more impressive than the sum of its components. For a detailed review, visit here.
From its rack steering system to its transparent handguards, Ski-Doo engineers left no rock unturned when designing this superior ride.
Yamaha Sidewinder SRX LE
For those looking for the luxury allure of a luxury sports sedan, the Sidewinder SRX, and its Arctic Cat sister machine, the ZR 9000 Thundercat, stand above the heap.
Already one of the most stylish machines on the snow, the SRX yields to 2020 in silver and black, adding to the mystique provided by its nearly 200 HP turbocharged engine along with its chassis that is yet spacious.
Upgrades for 2020 and its appeal that is indulgent add together -- such as suspension geometry that is revised, more choices in the adjust-on-the-fly iQS shocksstart, plus a tether. Go ahead, take one for a test drive: It may change your outlook about what a performance snowmobile is.
Polaris 600 Indy XC 129
When it comes to 600-class course sleds, Polaris always finds a way to wow our evaluation team, and also the 2020 Indy XC 129 is your best yet. Like its predecessors, this Indy is quick to respond to an assertive driver's needs, with all the punchy 600 Cleanfire engine, spot-on clutching, and an easy-to- move-around-on chassis that's sensitive to riders' inputs when slung down a twisting trail.
But that same snowmobile may nevertheless be driven comfortably by the proverbial"little old lady" (whether male or female, old or young ) due to the innate stability and equilibrium. The second-year Pro-XC rear suspension is Polaris' best yet while feeling attached to the trail below at soaking up the power out of bumps.
Ski-Doo Grand Touring Limited 900 ACE
Though not at risk of extinction, the luxury two-passenger touring segment has narrowed in recent years, but one brand is keeping it sharply on its radar. Given its Quebec place -- 2-up sales' heart -- Ski-Doo is that new using its Grand Touring Limited machines.
Luxury features abound, including heated grips and seats for the driver and passenger, a heated boot socket, premium end protection, ample storage, and ideal ergonomics to make both riders comfortable for extended cruises on endless trails.
Add in the best-in-class rMotion rear suspension using an adjust-on-the-fly atmosphere jolt, a SilentDrive bundle that limits track howl and vibration, plus the smooth and effective ACE engine , and you have got vacationing perfection.
Arctic Cat ZR 8000 RR 137
Much was written, whispered, or suggested about Arctic Cat's narrow 2020 snowmobile lineup, except for the brand's long-term core audience of ditch riders and racer-wannabes, it showed up in the 2020 Rode Report using a true gem in the ZR 8000 RR.
For aggressive Cat riders in the Upper Midwest and East, this is the machine which fantasies are made of -- agile, forceful, and prepared for abuse, with the usual chassis reinforcements and high-end clicker shocks that include the RR bundle.
New for 2020, though, is revised front suspension geometry that, on this version, in particular, sharpened the machine's handling both on smooth paths and if thrashing through mogul areas. This one for you, aggressive Cat lovers.
Ski-Doo Summit X 850 E-TEC Pro
Ski-Doo just doesn't stop -- each year, raising the bar therefore its riders can raise their riding to another level when it comes to mountain sled innovation. For 2020, the Expert Package -- including a shorter tube, almost non-existent snow flap, distant limiter strap modification, fresh spindle, and ski stopper, streamlined Forty7C seat, revised running boards, and much more -- provides again on that promise, accessible on special-order Summit X 850 versions.
That piles on top of existing Ski-Doo benefits, such as the 850 E-TEC engine, REV Gen4 mountain chassis, and tMotion rear suspension. The unreachable powder is within the easy reach of riders looking to push the boundaries of what is possible.
Polaris Indy Evo
The comparatively diminutive Indy Evo is not likely to conquer the SRX within an impromptu drag race, nor will it out-climb an Alpha, jump through moguls such as an Indy XCR or haul as much timber as an Expedition.
What the competent, affordable and easy-to-operate small snowmobile will do, however, is provide a gateway into the game for people that might someday buy a high-end sled. With its 550 fan-cooled engine, reduced
Pro-Ride chassis and shrunken ergonomics, the Evo is un-intimidating and inviting for youth transitioning off of smaller snowmobiles, newcomers to motorized recreation, and cyclists that are smaller in stature, and its cost ($5,499) also will help make it more tolerable.

For those of you wanting some insights as to the Hanna-Barberian presence at the Wo-Zha-Wa Parade on Sunday afterlunch ...
What made things particularly interesting here was that you have the parade grouped into several distinct categories for the sake of cohesion; something of a peculiar with the Wo-Zha-Wa celebrations that some Dells traditionalists have long seen as the end of the summer season even if it was seen as having ended on Labour Day. But at any rate, as Honourary Grand Marshals you had Snagglepuss, Huckleberry Hound and Crazy Claws riding in an open Nash Rambler convertible of early 1960's vintage, back when Kenosha still had something of a repute for cheap and flimsy-looking automobiles popular with such of a certain class, at parade's start. Followed behind by Wheelie, whose LED-display windshield proclaimed WELCOME TO THE 2018 WISCONSIN DELLS WO-ZHA-WA FALL FESTIVAL PARADE, done up in the Green Bay Packers colours of green and gold ... and the Chicago Bears such of blue and orange; the two alternated for the sake of showing respect to the Chicago crowd as partakes of the Dells every year.
As well, to make the fan-contact experience epitomised at the Arts and Crafts Show even more worthwhile, walkabouts featuring the best of Hanna-Barbera's Funtastic World, walking and mingling among the parade crowds (some even wearing GoPro cameras for the sake of the eventual film documentary), were interspersed throughout the several units. Perhaps some of the more interesting specimens of interactions included:
Yogi Bear sharing in some popcorn from paradegoers;
Scooby-Doo, Goober and Elmo, among others, posing in "Cheesehead" hats for fan pictures;
The Lupine Contingent (as in Hokey Wolf, Loopy DeLoop, Mildew Wolf and Wilford Wolf) marching (and chatting) as one, not to mention Loopy modelling a tuque patterned on the Hudson's Bay Company's famous woolen point blankets);
Wally Gator seeking out such wearing souvenir T-shirts from popular Florida resort areas (Clearwater Beach, Daytona Beach, Sanibel Island and even the Keys being especially favoured over the Orlando Theme Parks) for chat and pictures (and being surprised to learn that "key," as in the Florida Keys, is actually a corruption of the Spanish "cay," meaning a small island);
Hair Bear (of the Hair Bear Bunch) getting the most of his attention among the "selfie stick" element (and partaking of some of the fudge besides that paradegoers offered); and
The Skatebirds doing their synchronised-skate routine to "Skateaway" by Dire Straits, occasionally skating towards the crowds seeking chats (Satchel, given his beak, requiring some especially close care).
So much for the stereotype of politicians kissing babies: Practically all the Funtastics "out and about" kissed a wide range of paradegoers. Even Captain Caveman, who could not resist the sensation of kissing a 91-year-old grandmother (and getting photographed in the process by a fellow paradegoer on his Smartfone).
*************
Perhaps the piece de resistance musically, and perhaps the most unlikely-anticipate appearence, would have to be the joint appearence, on the same float besides, of both The Banana Splits and the Cattanooga Cats, performing jointly besides, much to the disbelief of all in attendance (yet acknowledged that such couldn't have been a more innovative band packaging at Wo-Zha-Wa or otherwise). For the sake of those interested in how the set list came out for this Funtastically Musical Dream Team, 'tis:
"Love Can Make You Happy" (Mercy, 1969)
"The Show Must Go On" (The Banana Splits)
"Falling in Love Again" (Ted Mulry, 1971)
"Love Could Be (Give Your Love to Me)" (Cattanooga Cats)
"Harmony" (The James Last Singers, 1970)
(Mind you, the representative numbers for both popdisk bands were performed jointly, not to mention a bit of silly comic interplay between both bands' members. As well, Kitty Jo introduced on behalf of the Cats; Drooper for the Splits.)
*************
Following parade unit breakup and disassembly, you had further wonderful opportunities for meet-and-greet in the bargain, as if the onset of a slight mist couldn't seem to dampen things. Yet a chili supper arranged at The Keg helped stimulate the friendships a little more ahead of the twilight finale, featuring a release of thousands of paper lanterns into the skies accompanied by a rather casual exercise in renewing old acquaintenances. (Especially touching: Two of kindred appetites, Shaggy and Big H, acknowledging where they couldn't resist a decent pancake supper at Perkins or IHOP. And with their respectivce crews, besides.)
Later that evening ... even as the mist continued to come rather steady, Huck, Snagglepuss and Crazy Claws settled in front of a fire pit over some cappuccino and day-old donuts from Paul Bunyan's to ponder just how inanely crazy, yet wonderful, things turned out. Even as most of the other attendees were getting ready to get back on the road, awaiting what may be their next crazy and silly adventures (and then some).
