This 1937 house in Medfield, Massachusetts is rare. It's only the 2nd Bauhaus style home I've ever found. Has 7bds, 6ba, plus the sale also includes a mid-century modern home with 3bds, 2ba, that is rented. Both homes - $2.598M.
There's a spacious entry hall with a terrazzo floor.
The home's been fully renovated and retains all the original details.
The most stunning feature is the glass block staircase.
Next to the living room is a family room. The original floor has been refinished and both rooms are divided by a middle wall that you can walk around to access either room.
This great built-in shelving unit goes around the middle wall.
Note the original folding wood shutters on the windows. The spacious dining room has a lively floor and a fireplace.
Delightful round sun room. Love the blue terrazzo floor.
The kitchen redo is simple. Those could be the original cabinets. The new appliances are chef's grade.
Next to the kitchen is a matching pantry.
Off the kitchen is this beautiful conservatory.
All of the baths in the home have vintage sinks, tubs, and modern toilets.
At the top of the stairs is a sitting area. What a great hang-out spot.
The primary bedroom has a fireplace and a terrace.
The bath has been renewed and is quite nice, especially the twin vintage sinks.
This secondary bedroom is also quite spacious and has a fireplace.
The bath has a vintage tub and sink.
The mid-century modern home on the property has a nice carport.
This house has also been completely renovated and is open concept.
Outside is a patio, and you can see the terrace above.
There's a very large lot- it's 8.79 acres.
The property also includes the Mill Brook.
What a great house.

Blending Boho, Mid-Century, and Farmhouse Styles for an Eclectic Living Room Full of Charm
Achieving a cozy, eclectic living room with a mix of boho, farmhouse, and mid-century styles creates a space brimming with warmth, personality, and timeless appeal. This unique blend combines the rustic simplicity of farmhouse design, the relaxed global aesthetic of boho, and the clean, functional lines of mid-century modern, resulting in a room that feels inviting and curated.
Here’s how to master this artful mix and bring the boho-mid-century-farmhouse vibe to life.
1. Setting the Foundation: Neutral Yet Warm Color Palette
Begin with a neutral color palette as a grounding base to balance the different style elements. Farmhouse style brings in whites, beiges, and soft earth tones, while mid-century often incorporates pops of color. Add warmth with shades like caramel, clay, and terracotta, which bridge the rustic farmhouse and boho tones. For instance, creamy white walls can make the perfect backdrop, allowing bolder elements like patterned rugs or mid-century chairs to stand out.
A neutral base also provides flexibility, allowing you to layer in a variety of textures, colors, and accents from each style without overwhelming the space.

2. Mixing Furniture Styles: Clean Lines Meet Vintage Charm
A great way to blend styles is through your furniture selections. Mid-century pieces add sleek, clean lines and functionality, while farmhouse furniture brings a comfortable, lived-in feel, often with reclaimed or distressed finishes. In this mix, boho style complements by adding a hint of global flair and craftsmanship.
3. Textures and Patterns: Layering for Depth and Interest
In any eclectic room, layering textures and patterns is essential to bring the space to life. The boho style thrives on layered textiles, so adding a mix of materials like jute, leather, and woven fabrics brings a tactile element.
4. Incorporating Natural Elements: Plants, Wood, and Stone
Natural materials are the common thread that can tie these three styles together. Farmhouse decor often emphasizes wood and stone, mid-century brings warm wood tones, and boho embraces natural fibers and indoor plants.

5. Art and Decor: Eclectic Accents with Personality
Finally, let your room's story shine through curated decor. Mixing decor from different styles can turn a beautiful room into a room with personality and charm.
6. Personal Touches: Bringing It All Together
The beauty of an eclectic style is that it feels personal and lived-in. Add items that reflect your unique tastes and experiences—whether it’s vintage finds, handwoven textiles, or art with sentimental value. This will bring warmth and individuality to your space, ensuring it feels like home.
The boho-mid-century-farmhouse combination brings out the best in each style, creating a room that’s sophisticated, warm, and endlessly interesting. With the right balance of textures, colors, and decor, your living room can become a cozy haven where rustic, global, and modern sensibilities harmoniously coexist.

Embrace Mid-Century Modern Sophistication with a Sheesham TV Unit
When it comes to interior design, the mid-century modern style has experienced a significant resurgence in popularity. Its timeless appeal and clean lines make it a perfect choice for those seeking a sophisticated and stylish living space. If you're looking to infuse your home with mid-century modern vibes, a Sheesham TV unit can be an excellent starting point. With its rich and warm tones, Sheesham wood adds a touch of natural elegance to any room. Combine it with the distinct design elements of mid-century modern decor, and you'll have a stunning focal point for your entertainment area.
A tv unit with tapered legs and clean geometric lines is the epitome of mid-century modern sophistication. Opt for a unit that features a sleek, minimalist design, allowing the natural beauty of the wood to shine through. The tapered legs add an extra touch of elegance and create a sense of visual lightness.
To complement your Sheesham TV unit, pair it with a retro-inspired sofa that captures the essence of mid-century design. Look for pieces with low profiles, clean lines, and textured upholstery in warm, earthy tones. Add a vintage vinyl record player or a collection of classic records to enhance the nostalgic atmosphere.
When it comes to decor, the mid-century modern style is all about simplicity and functionality. Incorporate mid-century decor pieces like ceramic vases, sculptural lamps, or geometric wall art to enhance the overall aesthetic. Aim for a warm color palette with pops of bold, retro hues like mustard yellow, teal, or burnt orange to create a vibrant yet balanced look.
Remember, the key to achieving mid-century modern sophistication is to strike a balance between sleek simplicity and retro-inspired accents. Let the Sheesham furniture be the anchor of the space, and carefully curate other furniture and decor pieces that complement its style. By combining the warmth of Sheesham wood with the iconic design elements of mid-century modern, you can create a living space that exudes timeless elegance and charm.

Where to Stay in Crete
Hello fellow travelers, and welcome to the largest island in Greece and the 5th biggest one in the Medditirean sea! I think Crete is one of the best places to stay in the country and the picturesque views of the White Mountains and traditional food will make sure you’ll share the same opinion by the time you leave! This place is every historian’s dream come true! There’s an archaeological museum at every corner and an ancient ruin in all the towns!
Are you looking for where to stay in Crete? Then you’ll be happy that here you’ll find the dreamiest crystal clear water surrounding the heavenly beaches from this island. I’m sure you’ll enjoy the Cretan air as well; apparently, it has healing powers! Hippocrates, known as the “father of medicine,” said that, so I guess we can take his word for it!
The villages on the islands are full of family run businesses, the best hotels, and local tavernas. Walk around the old town and admire the Venetian architecture and stop at one of the tavernas to eat some fresh fish!
In this article, I’ll present the best Cretan hotels and areas in the village for each type of visitor. From luxury hotels to on-budget Airbnbs, I have made a list of some of the best places that you can find here. Even if it’s the biggest Greek island, make sure you book in advance as they sell out quickly! Plus, most places have a free cancelation policy, so there’s no risk if you change your mind!
Let’s go! We have many villages to visit!
If you are in a hurry
Below you can find some luxury hotels and cool accommodation options for your next trip in Crete, all located in the central area of Chania:

Here is a map of Crete that will guide you through all the areas that I’m going to talk about:
1. Chania – where to stay in Crete for the first time
Are you ready to get lost on the streets of this stunning town in Greece? Also known as Hania, this beautiful village located in the west part of the island is one of the best places to stay in Crete. If this is your first time here, you should stay in Chania, as it is the second largest town and the most beautiful one if you ask me, so you’ll have plenty to do or see! Just make sure you book in advance to get the best deals!
Divided into two parts, the new village and the old one, you’ll fall in love with the vintage architecture, colorful villas, and small streets full of plants and multiple stairs. In the old part of Chania, you’ll find the harbour that has an authentic Old Venetian lighthouse that will transport you back in time.
Sit at one of the local bars and restaurants fronting the sea, wander around the old town, explore all the souvenir shops and boutique hotels, mingle with the Greek people, and enjoy this magical romantic sight.
In the new part of this western Crete town, you’ll find more shops; however, they are bigger, and some are designer! Stop at one of the nearby stores if you’re in the mood to treat yourself. You’re on vacation, so why not! You’ll find large hotels in this area as well, but the best part about Greece is that there’s a historical site at every corner!

2. Rethymno – best place to stay in Crete on a budget
I’m sure you’ll want to visit this perfect little village on the Greek island once you find out about the amazing hotels and little local shops around this area. The town is located in the north, just 45 km (20 miles) away from Chania. The long sandy beach will be the best place to relax and spend some time admiring the crystal clear water and enjoying the sun.
Travelers who go on holiday on a budget will love this place in Crete, Greece because it is a university town filled with students and you’ll find tons of affordable hotel options.
The streets are paved with cobblestones, so it will be like traveling back to ancient times. Explore the beautiful beaches of Rethymno; they are great for water sports enthusiasts. Take advantage of the unique mountain scenery and wander around the charming traditional hillside villages but don’t forget to visit an amazing museum or two in town.
The history in Greece is so rich you’ll catch yourself falling in love with every little stone and fortress that has a hidden story and meaning. This medieval town is very well preserved, probably the best out of all the villages in Crete, so the atmosphere near the Orthodox churches and mosques is quite fantastic.
Spend your holiday nights at the greek tavernas, under the moonlight, starry sky, with a glass of the best wine, and enjoy this unique experience. If you want to visit more parts of Greece during your holiday; check this complete article on where to stay in Mykonos!

The capital city, also known as Iraklio, which lies on the island’s north coast along the Sea of Crete, combines the modern and urban vibes perfectly with the older part of the town. Even if you decide to set your base here and stay at a boutique hotel, you can take the ferry to other islands as Heraklion has great traveling connections. Who doesn’t love traveling by boat?
Don’t let the designer shops and cool restaurants or bars fool ya; this fantastic island is filled with traditional old tavernas, history sites, and museums. You can visit the archaeological site of Knossos place, it will take you 20 minutes by car to get there
Still acting as a fishing village, you can go in the morning and see the fisherman catching the prey of the day and while you’re there, make sure you check out the 16th-century fort (it’s located within a walking distance) for some amazing views. If you stay in Crete, Heraklion, you’ll find many valleys with vineyards and olive groves that look very romantic, just like the ones in movies, so couples are going to love these spots!
Although it’s an urban city, you should explore the old city walls which the Arabs built. Initially, there were seven bastions in case of combat, but only the Martinengo Bastion managed to survive. You can find the tomb of the famous writer N. Kazantzakis and check out the stunning views! Have fun in the sun on the beach during the day and get drunk on cocktails in town during the night! If you’re still in the mood for some exploring, don’t worry Malia still has tons of ancient archaeological spots too.

You’ll probably find a young European person at every corner of the city looking to have some fun as this is the best area to stay in Crete for nightlife. Everyone is very friendly in this town so don’t be scared to mingle with everyone in the bars!
If you need a break from all the bars and restaurants, spend a night wandering around the small streets of Malia that have beautiful pastel-colored houses and plants hanging from the windows. Famous movie stars, like Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, have spent their holiday here so you’ll find the best luxury resorts and beaches. That’s not the only thing that makes Elounda a top tourist location, the picturesque landscape of the blue lagoon visible from the Gulf of Korfos harbour will take your breath away!
If you’re looking for an extravagant place where to stay in Crete, I’ve found your match! You can enjoy many things in this perfect city; you can go shopping around town or have dinner in a fancy restaurant and admire all the high-class people who are strolling around Elounda. Although this area has many contemporary aspects, you’ll still enjoy that old town vibe and get to see archeological sites.

BONUS: The 5 best beaches in Crete
Whether you’ve already planned your holiday here or you’re debating with the whole family about where to stay in Crete during your vacation, one thing is certain: you have to pack lots of bathing suits because here you’ll find some of the best sandy beaches out of all of the Greek islands.
I know you’ll have lots of famous archaeological sites to visit, not to mention there’s a museum at every corner, but I’m sure you’ll also be in the mood for some good old beach fun. And if beaches are your main reason to visit Crete, you might want to make sure you stay near some of these beauties.
FUN FACT: Zeus the King of Gods was born in a cave and he was raised on mount Ida. A place in Crete that has now become a popular ancient excavation site!
If it’s good enough for the Gods, it’s good enough for me! Let’s see some of the best beaches in Crete that you should check out during your holiday! Everyone I know who went on vacation here recommended that it’s best to rent a car, just so you can move easily from one place to another, so I think you should consider this so you’ll have the best Cretan experience!
1. Elafonisi Located on the southwestern corner of the island, this perfect place is just a 1.5 hours drive away from Chania. The beach is famous for its pinkish sand, which was white before but it turned this color because of the shells.
This lagoon beach in Crete can get quite busy during the summer, you can’t be surprised since it looks like paradise, with blue water and pink sand. Families will like this place as the water isn’t too deep so the kids can play in peace. You can explore around and discover some nice restaurants with traditional food.
2. Falassarna This beautiful tranquil spot is located on the west end of the island just 40 km (20 miles) away from Chania by car. On the road to Falassarna, you’ll see tons of olive groves and greek villas.
The water is amazing, although it’s not really recommended for families to come here as the currents are really strong; however, windsurfers should check out this friendly beach in Crete. There are also many restaurants and tavernas that you can visit after a full day at the beach
3. Preveli A remote beach located on the south of the Cretan coast just 1.5 hours away by car from Chania; cliffs surround this place, so if we have any adventure fans here, then check out this one!
It might be a bit tricky to access the beach just because you have to go down a steep path, but hey, looking on the bright side you can get some exercise done during your holiday! Make sure you stop at one of the tavernas before going down to the beach for some delicious refreshments.
4. Balos Located 55km (30 miles) northwest of Chania, this white sand beach is one of the best places on the island. Surrounded by rocks and crystal clear water this beautiful place doesn’t have any restaurants at it’s shore so you should buy a meal to go from one of the restaurants you pass on the way. Be careful on the road, it’s quite rocky but once you get here it will be so worth it! Enjoy the silence!
5. Seitan Limania Just 20 km (10 miles) away northeast of Chania, this hidden beach is worth the climb down from the top of the rocks surrounding it. The views are as beautiful as from above and from below. It’s quite small so you won’t have any other activities than tanning and swimming in the blue water!
Frequently asked questions about Crete

🌅 What is the most beautiful part of Crete?
The northern part of Crete is definitely the most beautiful and one of the best places to stay as it has most of the major towns mentioned above and the top tourist attractions.
💙 Which part of Crete is best for couples?
If you’re wondering where to stay in Crete with your loved one then Malia should be your destination on the island. It is filled with many romantic restaurants, friendly locals, and picturesque views. Ikaros is the perfect resort for a romantic getaway.
🌞 Which side of Crete is warmer?
Although the south part of the Cretan island is usually a couple of °C warmer, temperatures are roughly the same in all areas.
Conclusion
I hope you had fun during this virtual written tour of the villages in Crete, I sure did! I’m happy I’ve got the chance to help you find the best area to stay on the islands and which hotels are best suited for you! Make sure you book in advance as these sell like hotcakes! Remember you can always pick one as a base and explore from there.
I know I’ve given you tons of hotel choices from where you can choose the best one to stay in during your holiday in Crete but here are my top two favorites hotels from Chania:

Aw, maaaannn, another one of my dream houses is back on the market, but this time, instead of the $3.5M price tag it had in 2018, it's now listed for $9.75M + $1,967mo. common charge. The 1910 building is located in the East Village, a desirable trendy part of New York City. It's a large duplex with 5bds, 4.5ba.
The entrance is thru an iron gate and a forest green door.
The property consists of a penthouse with a cottage on the roof.
In the living room is a lovely fireplace and a mezzanine on the 2nd level opens the space, giving it some architectural interest.
The home was renovated and has a renewed staircase, yet retains an original niche. A ceiling-high glass block window lets in light.
Open concept dining room lined with windows for lots of natural light.
The open space ends with the kitchen.
Love the vintage look flooring. The kitchen island is unique- it looks like a mid-century modern sideboard.
The mezzanine is basically just a walkway, but it has a wall of shelving and enough room for a chair or two.
There's also a nook for a small desk or writing table.
The primary bedroom is a nice size, gets good natural light, and has a small nook for a chair, plus a lovely fireplace. It also has a view of the patio. And, it's located in the rooftop cottage.
Very nicely remodeled vintage style bath.
Hallway with a built-in closet and a bedroom used as a TV room.
This bedroom is designed the same as the primary, but on a smaller scale.
Lively turquoise subway tile bath and bedroom #3.
And, another lovely tiled bath with bedroom #4.
The rooftop cottage and brick patio looks like a beautiful home you'd find on the ground.
It's like the best of both worlds, living in the city and the country.
There're even trees, lawn & gardens.
View of the city.

ARTIST IN PRESERVATION
Author: Lindsey Shook via California Home + Design
L.A. artist Flore opens the doors to his Florida home that honors original, mid-century design.
The painting is by Flore entitled Jackson, created in homage to Jackson Pollock. The original Marshmallow chair by George Nelson is covered in Alexander Girard fabric produced by Herman Miller. The Eames storage unit in background faces an Eames molded plywood coffee table. Photos by Dan Chavkin Photo.
In the dining area, Andy Warhol’s Flower’s hangs near a yellow velvet Eames lounge chair. A Knoll tulips-based kitchen table with walnut top is surrounded by DCM Eames chairs, below a George Nelson bubble lamp light fixture.
The kitchen features original appliances and wood cabinets with a new Andy Warhol rug. Jean-Michel Basquia’s The Head (1983) peers through in the background.
Originally designed by Gene Leedy, who was one of the pioneers of the Florida modernist movement and founders of the Sarasota School of Architecture, Flore wanted to honor the home and leave most of the original details intact. “When you walk into the house nothing stood out to you being new,” he says. “I wanted everything to look period-specific, like you walked into a home from 1963.”
The Le Chaise Lounge by Eames sits in the primary bedroom with matching vintage credenza and MCM bedside tables that hold vintage orange bedside lamps. On the wall is Keith Haring’s Statue of Liberty.
In the primary bathroom, the original cabinetry that matches the kitchen faces a walk-in jacuzzi tub and shower which opens to the back patio. Flore found vintage Rya rugs for the floor.
Aside from paint and a few updates here and there, Flore left the interior finishes untouched and focused his creativity on decor and art selections. “I love low lines in furniture, which you will see reflected in most pieces I have chosen for my homes. In addition, I always approach a space with a theme (time period, color, etc.). My loft in Miami was inspired by Japanese architects, where as the Gene Leedy home was inspired by mid-century design.”
At the foot of the bed is diamond Bertoia chair by Knoll. Original DCM chair is next to a teak bed that holds crushed velvet pillows.
With his goal of maintaining the home’s bones and enhancing with pieces that paid tribute to the original design, Flore created a contemporary peek into historic modernism. “I want to live in spaces that inspire me and be surrounded by designs that I admire,” he says. “Everything becomes pieces of art.”
Globally respected for his Urban Cubism collection, the final design inside the Leedy home inspired Flore to create his now popular series, The Modernist, all available through L.A. gallery Art Angels. A symphonic display of chaos and color, each work evokes the explosion of hues inside the Leedy home. “There is not a lot of separation between my life and my art.”

Bespoke Shelving Ideas For Kitchen | Bespoke Shelving Essex
The kitchen is one of the most used and engaged areas in the house. That is the reason everyone needs to have beautiful and durable kitchen shelves. As the well-built kitchen shelves add an alluring look to your kitchen.
When it comes to select kitchen storage, you can never be satisfied with one choice. Ideally, you want to add a variety of storage options including, eye-level cupboards for dinnerware and glassware, deep drawers for pots and pans, smaller drawers for cutlery and serving ware and, of course, a generous pantry for storing all your food staples out of sight, and so forth. So, let us find out some of the trending bespoke shelving ideas for your modern kitchen. Read this article until the end and finalize your choice.
1. Give a try to vintage freestanding kitchen storage: Before finding innovative kitchen storage ideas, please don't forget that there are many great storage options available. Some storage solutions look equally at home in a dining area or living space, making them well suited to open-plan spaces.
This is a perfect match if you're planning for a vintage kitchen or traditional home kitchen. It is good to have a kitchen sideboard to accommodate stacks of plates, glassware and table linens. However, wardrobes were very famous in Mid-century interiors too and have become fashionable again in recent times, so you can find some tremendous second-hand versions in charity shops or at auctions or can design that also.
2. Wall to wall shelves: Well, this buzzing trend in the interior industry. Instead of occupying the space, the bespoke kitchen's focal point is the row of glass paintings, the simple super-long shelf lined with pretty bottles, pots and vases, and the antique chandelier hung deliberately. These add some extra punch in the dull kitchen and save a lot of space occupied by a particular unit.
3. Go for drawers as well as cupboards: Our houses are becoming small, and the size of the family is increasing. Utilizing each corner of the house is essential, as well as the need of every household. Having drawers and cupboards are fitting perfectly in modern-day kitchen demand. This kitchen storage is ideal for keeping the kitchen both more comfortable and tidier. Mostly if your drawers range in size, from slim (for cutlery) to medium (for kitchen linens) and large (for pots and pans). This will keep your utensils separated and untangled.
4. Have kitchen storage with sliding doors to give extra space in a small kitchen: This is ideal if you are looking for kitchen storage ideas for a small kitchen. Having a cabinet with sliding doors can provide a perfect place to throw general kitchen clutter when you have limited space and the guests coming over. If you are running for a space problem, get the sliding doors as they optimum choice for your modern kitchen.
5. Cook's kitchen: This is the most suitable design to fulfill a large family's demands where they all are keen cooks. This kitchen has a vast cooker, deep larder and chalkboard for recipe essentials. With simple scaffolding, shelving makes it easy for you to grab utensils when they're needed.
6. Explore more about the niche kitchen storage ideas:
If you have decided to invest a whole new kitchen storage solution, you can try those extra features that will help keep your worktops clear. Because of narrow storage for chopping boards and baking trays will keep them out of the way of prep areas, without cluttering cupboards. You might also want to use small nooks for bottle racks or even a bin cupboard.
7. Add some extra slides in crates for fruit and veggies:
Every kitchen needs to be functional. A practiced cook knows that a lot of fruit and veggies do much better when stored out of the fridge. But how to do that? Well, modern interiors find the solution to every problem. Go to experienced designers. They will surely help you.
8. Select modular kitchen shelving for adaptable kitchen storage:
It is an excellent fit for minimalist interiors. Well, customizable and flexible modular shelving has revolutionized the current storage systems. It can be dressed up or down to fit in any kitchen style. What's more, to ask for, the shelves can be moved around to adapt to your storage needs.
Well, this is not the end. The list is too long. The kitchen interior has been changed a lot in recent years. Today kitchens can be easily customized depending upon the requirements and the pricing. Professional cooks required different customizations as compared to a general household. If you are looking for bespoke shelving in Essex, you can contact Burton Joinery and Burton Laminates LTD. They are known for offering bespoke shelving in Essex and nearby areas. They provide budget-friendly and quality services for bespoke shelving in Essex. my brain is still doing the thing where you’re somewhere new and it’s like oH!!! TIME TO NOTICE!!! NOTICE ALL THE THINGS!!!!! so here’s my account of the little details while they’re still fresh and I’m still aware of them
also I should note, I rented this apartment teeeeechnically sight unseen. I was not expecting to move for a few months, but then coronavirus happened and I needed to get away from my roommate ASAP. but because of everything going on, I couldn’t tour the place in person. the realtor arranged for the tenant to take me on a video tour, so I still got to see something more authentic/trustworthy than just photos, but still. it’s different finally getting to SEE a place
around here, a majority of the apartment buildings are from the 20s. I’ve gone from a building built in 1920 to one built in 1925
so I still have a lot of those “old building” details that I love and that I had in the last place—that exact same molding that every 20s building seems to have around doorways, old doorknobs and interesting doorknob plates, tile lobbies with marble stairs (old, worn, and cracking, but definitely original and definitely cool)
however, the kitchen and bathroom in my last place had DEEEEFNITELY been redone more recently. I’m going to guess the kitchen and bathroom in this place hasn’t seen a significant renovation since the 50s, based on nothing but “it reminds me of my grandma’s house which was built in 1950 and never renovated. and also I googled 50s kitchen/bathroom sink and yep those are my sinks”
the kitchen cabinets are metal, which is fascinating and also feels very mid-century. the counter beside the kitchen sink has drainboard grooves imbedded in it (I haven’t used the oven yet, but fortunately that’s newer. some vintage things are cool, but you don’t want an oven the same age as your parents)
the windows are wood. you can see the chain in the window frame for the pulley system. I thought this would be a pain, but honestly they’re way easier to open and close than modern windows
the bathroom floor has that octagonal tile, and the walls are tiled up to the chair rail. the tub is encased in a sort of box, which is also tiled. the faucet is along the side of the tub, not at the front. (I haven’t tried to take a bath yet, but it seems somewhat deeper than a normal tub, and my lanky 5′10″ self is hype)
the bathroom sink is absolutely the same sink as my grandma’s bathroom. porcelain, jutting out of the wall, no cabinetry beneath it. separate faucets for hot and cold. that’s a little inconvenient for finding a good temperature to wash your hands, but right now the nostalgia factor is winning out over the practicality
there’s a thingy on the wall by the front door that’s mostly been painted over, but I’m pretty positive it’s the original doorbell mechanism? it’s fascinating.
THERE’S A WINDOW IN MY CLOSET???? WHICH IS ACTUALLY QUITE LARGE???? (there’s only one closet and I was not shown it on the video tour, so I was assuming I’d have minimal closet space. it’s actually really big and it has?? a window????)
in the wall by the bathroom, there’s a built-in linen cupboard and built-in drawers, which is adorable and I’m obsessed with it
this has nothing to do with the building being old, but I love the placement of this particular unit. I’m on the top floor (rip me with groceries) but on the plus side, it means I get a ton of light. I face the back of the building, so instead of being along a busy street, I overlook a grassy patch behind the building
THE AFOREMENTIONED BED NOOK!! WHICH IS A NOOK, FOR MY BED!!!! it’s this little triangular alcove off the main room and my bed fits into it perfectly, and it’s really nice because a) sleeping in a bed nook is SUPER COZY, but b) even though I’m in a studio, it still feels like I have a separate “living space” vs. “sleeping space”
the radiators are actually hidden by these nice wooden boxes, which is nice and nostalgic for me, because the house I grew up in had encased radiators like that
I just really love old details on buildings? The house I grew up in was built in 1888 (granted, WAY MORE MODERNIZED than any of the 1920s apartments I’ve lived in) and there’s something about those historical details that just really makes me feel homey
yes, there’s some drawbacks to living in a place that hasn’t been recently redone. the sinks and tub are far from sparklingly clean because they’re old, I’m going to miss having a dishwasher and a garbage disposal, there’s wear and there’s cracks, radiators clank and bang and are hard to regulate. but god there’s also so much CHARM.
#apartment adventures#IT'S SO NICE TO HAVE SOMETHING FRESH IN LIFE#is moving during a global pandemic EVEN MORE STRESSFUL than regular moving? YES!#AND YOU WILL CLEAN THE NEW PLACE WAY MORE THOROUGHLY THAN YOU EVER WOULD HAVE NORMALLY#is moving during a global pandemic also kind of nice because finally something in life changes and you get to be in a different environment?#also yes. particularly when that different environment no longer has a messy passive aggressive roommate#you know when something is Different and New and you can just FEEL parts of your brain waking up and feeling invigorated#my brain feels so Fresh
