You never really sang something professionally, just on drunk karaoke nights or Instagram stories so you are a little bit nervous; you would hate to do a bad job and disappoint your friends.

When you finally arrive you find it strange to hear only silence since the boys are always talking loud and laughing. Soon you realize that you are almost alone, the only one here besides you is Joel. He is sitting on the couch with his cellphone in hands, trying to take a good selfie or something like that. You hold a laugh when he starts to film something that probably is for his Tiktok account.

“Hey cringe lord” you say, making him jump in fright.

“Shit!” He says, dropping his phone on the center table.

“Don't stop because of me, please. I was having fun watching you being so ridiculous” you drop your purse at the table, sitting on his side on the couch.

He just rolls his eyes as he keeps recording himself. You two don't get along very well, you think Joel is kinda boring; always trying to be the vampire prince of darkness like Ville Valo or something. It makes you want to puke. “Where are the rest of the boys?” You ask.

“They got tired and hungry so they decided to go buy some food… You know that it's really bad when people have to wait hours for someone” he says, his eyes still locked on the cellphone screen.

You grab the phone from his hands, reading the title of the filter he was trying on: Your love story in 2024. A loud laugh comes from your mouth and you try to hold but the idea of Joel caring about this kind of stuff sounds like a joke to you – even though he is just having fun.

“That's so pathetic!” You roll his eyes.

“I don't fucking care”.

He presses the button and starts to record, and soon the result appears: enemy to lovers. He tries to hide the result from you but your eyes already caught everything. A heath grows in your stomach just to think about the possibility of things changing between you and Joel. Yes, he is very – very – attractive and it would be nice to kiss him if he wasn't such a dumbass.

“Impossible” you say.

I have been so absent from tumblr! In my defense, I just got home from a whirlwind almost two weeks in Finland, where I initially traveled to fulfill a long-held dream of mine to see Ville Valo perform at Tavastia on New Year’s.

On that note, I present to you The Finland Chronicles Part 1: New Year’s Eve

Scoping out the area the day before we queued up.

Looking back, I really don’t know how we were in line for as long as we were in those temperatures, even with food and bathroom breaks, and the occasional escape into Kamppi station (right across the street) when the cold got to be too much. But I couldn’t have asked for better people to queue up with and look, we even met Sampo and Juho, who were as sweet as could be.

Had a nice time hanging out once we were inside the club (despite the occasional belligerent in the crowd). Mandatory pics of the famous ceiling Heartagram and hey, what’s that on my ring finger?

One of the ways Ville has most impacted me outside of his own music, has been his impeccable taste and willingness to dispense valuable knowledge to us all. Zetra is one of those discoveries. I first heard their cover of “Beauty Has Her Way” at the Lisbon show in February 2023, as part of a playlist Ville compiled in the break between Kælan Mikla’s set and his, and it made me feel like my soul was leaving my body (and now it's my blog's header, haha). So getting to see them live almost a year after the fact felt like a full circle moment. After the Tavastia show, I’d have to say my current favorite song by them is “Float.”

Then the owner of Tavastia gave a very emotional speech (someone in the crowd told us he is retiring this year) counted down to 2024 with us, and sprayed the audience with champagne. Followed by The Man, The Myth, The Legend. There’s really not too much I can say, other than the usual. Ville and the band were perfect that night, they gave us two encores, and we got to hear Gone With The Sin and Killing Loneliness live once more (due to Tumblr’s limits on videos I had a difficult choice to make, so here’s a snippet of Killing Loneliness).

And then, just like that, the show and the year of Neon Noir were over. My voice was already going when I got to Finland, but I happily sacrificed what was left of it at the altar of Tavastia. I realize how immensely lucky I am for scoring tickets to a gig like this, which I know is a dream for so many. Here’s to hoping the tradition continues (it’s been more than hinted that it will) and thank you Ville for starting and ending the year with us 🩷

MY YEAR IN REVIEW - 2023

Well what a year its been, a glorious hot summer, festivals, shooting exclusively for Ashnikko, and a few bucket lists ticked off.

Shooting a few rock bands at Lytham Festival (Motley Crue and Def Leppard) and discovering some great new bands at Neighbourhood Festival (CMAT and Picture Parlour).

My favourite photos this year were featured in an article on Louder Than War here:

Milky Way from Wargasm is my ultimate favourite gig shot of the year - I took this after I had done my favourite list. I have entered this into the EPAs photo competition. I love the back lighting on her hair as it flares up just at the right moment, the way the edge of her coat is tinged blue by the lighting. BOOM!

It’s been 15 years since I leapt into the music business with Mudkiss Fanzine. It's 8 years since I started to shoot for academy music group as a house photographer and 10 years louder than war It’s been another memorable year in the pit.

And a thanks to the PR + artists who made it possible to get into shows in the first place. My favourite show of the year to watch was Pink in Bolton - just spectacular. This year's top highlights have been getting interviewed and photographed for the Observer and Guardian on reaching 60 and still using the punk DIY spirit and having a photo shoot with the great photographer Perou. I was delighted to have won a one-off Marilyn Monroe hand-painted jacket by Dave Sharp 2024 has some promising shows lined up (of course pending accreditation). I've also been asked to do a talk/interview in March 2024 and I have entered a photo competition for the first time ever - wish me luck. HAPPY NEW YEAR!!
