Crete Chronicles: Day 1
Today we got up at three am to go to the airport. Now, our flight didn't leave until 7.55 am, but we had to make a one and an half hour trip to the airport. One of the perks of being on the road that early, is that the highways are basically empty (apart from some trucks).
We parked our car far away from the airport, as it was cheaper to park there and we would be transported to the airport anyways. We reached the airport at around 5.40 am.
The check-in took quite some time as the systems couldn't handle all the people checking in their bagage at once. After everything was checked in, we moved on to the security check.
Security went quite smoothly, the queue moving steadily. Everything was okay and nothing needed to be double-checked.
After the security, we decided to get breakfast. I still wasn't really hungry, so I just bought an iced tea.
As we were waaay too early, we had to wait about an hour before we could go to our gate to board. But, thanks to priority boarding, we were on the plane quite quickly.
We had some delay as fuelling had some hiccups, but within 45 minutes we were in the air, on the way to Crete.
At 12.20 o'clock we landed on Heraklion Airport. The landing was a bit bumpy, but we made it. We quickly were let out of the plane and brought to the baggage-claim.
Now, this took so long. At first, everything seemed to go well, suitcase after suitcase rolled in. But then it suddenly stopped. No more suitcases came out. We still didn't have ours, so we had to wait. After about 20 minutes there came a new wave of suitcases, but mine still didn't come out.
Now, here I was getting slightly stressed. Airports from my country lose baggage quite often, so I thought that had happened to mine. But luckily, after ten minutes it came out.
After a quick bathroom break, we had to pick up our rental car. Here came another bump in the road. (Pun not intended). Apparently our reservation for the car didn't have insurance, so the lady at the desk cancelled our reservation and made a new one with insurance.
After that was taken care of, we dragged our baggage to the car pick-up point. There, we got our car. A slightly smaller one than the one we had initially thought of, but still big enough.
After playing some tetris with our baggage to get it in the car, we were on our way to the villa we had rented. Now sadly, this villa is still a one and an half hour drive from Heraklion so we had to sit and travel some more. But, we quickly got used to the Greek driving this way.
When we thought we had reached our villa, we couldn't find it. After driving in circles for a while, we finally managed to find it. It was hidden behind some big bushes.
After the car was maneuvered in the small driveway, we brought our baggage inside. The villa is even bigger than we had expected and has an amazing pool and a wonderful sunny terrace.
Now, we were getting quite hungry. (As we had completely skipped lunch and barely had any breakfast, or in my case no breakfast). So we drove to a nearby Lidl and got dinner and some quick snacks for in the car.
The snacks weren't amazing, but they helped to still our hunger. We arrived back at the villa and unloaded the groceries.
We had some drinks in the sun and chilled out for a bit. When the hunger kicked in again, we made dinner while jamming to some Eurovision 2023 songs.
We had dinner and unloaded our baggage. As we were still tired from getting up so early, we decided to call it a day. We drank some coffee/tea and went to bed.

Where to live in Greece choices of the locals and foreigners
Tumblr media
Greece is full of beautiful places with a distinct and different identity, from which one can choose the most ideal one to live the dreamy life. Large towns, picturesque seaside and mountain villages, small and large Greek islands, rural and tourist areas, isolated or full of tourists. The list is endless.
This variety is perhaps the main reason that attracts more and more people worldwide.
Anyone, who truly takes an interest in this country, will eventually face the question: what is it that the Greeks themselves choose from this striking variety? Where do they look to if they want to set up a business or if they want to build or find a house for sale to fit a big family?
As they say, if you want to find the best tavern in a Greek seaside village, pay attention to where the locals go out for lunch. This rule is accurate also for choosing a place to live. However, with some reservations.
So, for example, the young locals, who are more into apartments for rent, prefer big cities, for it is there where they can find more opportunities to study and build a career. Athens and Thessaloniki accept a large number of young people, who are admitted to universities or have found their first jobs and are starting out on their careers.
At the same time, the Greeks with young families are looking for places that are more kid-friendly. Their basic requirement is that the kindergartens, schools, health care facilities, malls to be at a reachable distance. According to these criteria, the big cities of the mainland and islands, such as Patra, Kavala, Alexandroupolis, Heraklion, would be a good choice. These places have a wide array of houses for sale; thus, it is possible to find a house perfectly suitable for a family.
Given that many Greeks are employed/work in the tourism industry and many of them own a tourist property (e.g. small hotels, taverns, souvenir shops, etc.), they prefer to have their homes where their business is. Mostly it is the Greek islands, which attract masses of foreign tourists every year.
However, if we are considering foreigners who relocate to Greece, their choice of places to live mostly comes from their financial resources.
Middle class, students, and young families prefer places with a maximum of services available, well-developed transport and social infrastructure, big expat communities. Often such foreigners are more interested in apartments for rent (long-term).
A big number of Russian nationals live in Thessaloniki and work in tourist regions of Greece. In Athens and on Santorini you can find big Chinese communities.
A foreigner’s choice of a place to live in Greece has also to do with their personal goals. The ones relocating to Greece would rather choose big cities, whereas the ones who are only looking for a vacation would choose the islands and other vacation spots.
The more financial resources a foreigner, who decided to relocate to Greece, has, the more he tends to look for something exclusive and isolated. In such case, one would look to picturesque places, mostly Greek islands. There you can often find large property for sale, which is often the first choice of rich foreigners. The global elite chooses Greece over and over again. On Antiparos, Spetses and other Greek islands, many of the most famous and richest people in the world have decided to buy a villa. Some of them went even further and bought the whole islands. The Greek islands, of which there are around 3.500, have enormous potential. Buying property there might become a trend, given that Greece has something to offer even to the most demanding buyers.

10 of the best family-friendly hotels and villas in Greece | Travel
Sifnos, Cyclades
It’s rare to find a hotel that appeals to children of all ages. Verina Suites does so brilliantly, and has plenty of perks for adults too. Staff in white deliver homemade lemonade to the squishy day beds that line the turquoise pool. Kids can mess around on giant inflatables or play table tennis, while their parents wind down with outdoor yoga sessions or summery cocktails. Suites in sandy hues are set among fragrant gardens, with terraces where you can doze to the sound of the waves. Shallow Platis Gialos beach is across the road, with pedal boats, paddleboards and a lively strip of tables-in-the-sand tavernas and beach bars to choose from. • Doubles from €110 B&B in low season (fully booked in 2019 school summer holidays), kids up to 16 stay free in their parents’ room Getting there Five hours by ferry or three hours by catamaran from Athens
Lesvos, North Aegean
Every soothingly simple villa at Little Bird on the north coast of Lesvos has full-blown sea views. There are shady gardens, flagstone terraces for backgammon sessions as the sun sets behind the Byzantine castle of Molyvos and an infinity pool (and children’s pool) from which you might spot monk seals or flamingos. Skip down to Avlaki beach for a dip before breakfast at the Bird Café. Kids will love the fruit smoothie and home-made bougatsa (custard pie). Parents can while away the afternoon sampling the island’s most famous products: sardines, olive oil and ouzo. • From €90 a night (from €150 in high season) for a one-bedroom villa (sleeps three); €120 (€185 high season) for a two-bedroom villa (sleeps five), not including breakfast Getting there Thomas Cook charter flights from Gatwick, Manchester and Birmingham. From Athens, daily flights (50 minutes) with Aegean or Olympic airlines, or it’s 11 hours by ferry. Little Bird is 60km from the airport; car hire recommended
Arcadia, Peloponnese
The nine-suite Villa Vager guesthouse, owned by Nicholas and Marina Vager, is homely yet stately. Marina, an interior designer, created the handsome alpine vibe, softened with lace curtains and wildflower bouquets. She also makes the tastiest pies, cakes and pizzas, (served beside a roaring fire in winter) after a day hiking the Menalon trail or river rafting. Most rooms have stirring views of rolling plains and fir-clad mountains. It’s a great base for active families with older kids; Nicholas’s adrenaline-fuelled quad-biking tours will have teenagers raving. If you want to drag the kids around some ruins, it’s an easy day trip to Mycenae and Olympia. • From €120 a night for a room sleeping three (from €170 in high season), including breakfast Getting there An hour from Kalamata airport or a two-hour drive from Athens
Elounda Bay, Crete
This spot on the island’s north-east coast is a byword for super-luxe holidays. The laidback Elounda Island Villas, blissfully isolated on a tiny, sandy cove, are refreshingly unpretentious and affordable. The open-plan, solar-powered houses are the epitome of understated Greek island style: slate floors, built-in beds dressed in pure white, locally made pine furniture, and canvas chairs on verandas overlooking Spinalonga bay. Breakfast is served in an open-air snack bar, where you can while away the afternoon while the kids (who must be six and over) build sandcastles on the beach. Take older kids kayaking or snorkelling around the sunken ruins of Olous or rent a motorboat to explore Spinalonga island. The houses are self-catering, but there are seaside tavernas within strolling distance. • From €130 a night (from €150 in high season) for a two-bedroom maisonette for four to five Getting there Heraklion airport (an hour’s drive), is served by several flights a day from the UK (in season only) and Athens. The ferry from Piraeus to Heraklion takes five to eight hours
Evia
The 10,000-acre Candili Estate on the underrated (and Greece’s second largest) island of Evia, north-east of Athens, is part English country pile, part Greek history lesson. It’s been in the Noel-Baker family since Edward Noel, a relative of Lord Byron, bought the estate in 1832. Somehow, it has survived – a slightly threadbare but charming throwback, all sagging bookshelves, creaky wooden floors and hand-woven bedspreads. It’s the perfect setting for big family gatherings. The granary has been converted into 10 bedrooms overlooking a pool glittering in a glade. Also in the bucolic grounds is an icy plunge pool fed by a mountain spring, a ping-pong table, trampoline, and croquet lawn. Philip Noel-Baker, the puckish lord of the manor, encourages kids to pile into (and onto) his vintage Land Rover for off-road adventures. At dinner, everyone gathers around communal tables to swap stories over Stavroula’s wonderful Greek cooking. The whole place can also be rented as one, for up to 25 people. • Family weeks from €65 per adult, €40 per child (under 13) per night half-board and including snacks and drinks. Children under four stay free Getting there Two hours’ drive from Athens
Zagori, Epirus
Want to let your kids run amok in the wilderness? Zagori is just the ticket. This mainland region of soaring peaks, craggy gorges and rippling streams is gradually getting the attention it deserves thanks to lovely lodges like Astra Inn. Open year round, it’s in Megalo Papingo, one of 50-odd villages camouflaged in the hills. There are six wood and stone cottages and the cosy restaurant serves Greek comfort food (river trout, nettle pie, stuffed courgette blossoms) using ingredients reared, grown, or sourced locally by Kostas and Spyros Tsoumanis, brothers who will take you truffle or mushroom hunting in season. Tweens and teens can go wild swimming in rock pools, canyoning, rafting or hit the hills on ebikes. • From €100-€120 a night all summer, €15 per child, including breakfast Getting there Daily flights (45 minutes) from Athens to Ioannina, then one hour by car to Megalo Papigo
Laconia, Peloponnese

Laconia, Peloponnese
Surrounded by more than a thousand olive trees, Eumelia, a biodynamic farm, is sustainably minded and beautifully designed. The five guest cottages have dusky pink and ochre walls painted with natural pigments, beamed ceilings and geothermal heating. Activities change with the seasons: grape pressing, olive harvesting or cooking lessons using organic produce from the farm. Kids can help the owners, Frangiskos and Marilena, to feed the animals, plant vegetables and forage for the herbs that find their way into the wild asparagus omelette, lavender biscuits and fig and prickly-pear preserve served for breakfast. There are free mountain bikes if you want to explore Laconia’s towering mountains or serene coastline. • €160 a night for a family of four (kids under 12), including breakfast Getting there The closest airport is Kalamata (1¾ hours). It’s a 3½-hour drive from Athens
Chania, Crete
Ammos is the gift that keeps on giving for frazzled parents of babies and toddlers. Every year, the owner, Nikos Tsepetis, adds more designer – or as they put it “museum grade” – chairs (yes, every year they add a few new ones) and contemporary art to the all-white sunny living/dining room, more kid-friendly treats to the extravagant breakfast spread, more toys to the playroom and heated pool. After upgrading the rooms, this year he’s redesigned the lobby in undulating white marble. The jackpot: four hours of free childcare from Monday to Friday, leaving parents free to loll on the sandy beach below or have a massage. • From €125 a night in low season and €190 in high season (10% of the room rate for kids from two to 15; 5% for under-twos). Breakfast is €11 for adults and €7 for children aged two to 10 Getting there British Airways, easyJet, Ryanair and Norwegian operate direct flights to Chania (four hours); flights from Athens (55 minutes) with Aegean and Olympic airlines and Sky Express. Ammos is a 30-minute drive from Chania
Kardamyli, Peloponnese
Wedged between the Taygetos mountains and the Gulf of Messinia, the little seaside town of Kardamyli is where Patrick Leigh Fermor hung up his walking boots and laid down roots. Giorgos and Maria (who also run Fermor’s favourite taverna, Lela’s) have created the Notos Hotel, a cluster of stone apartments and studios tumbling down the hillside above the town. Open all year, the plain but spotless houses make a handy base for exploring the medieval castles, limestone gorges and shingle coves of the outer Mani. You’ll need to make (or pre-order, for an extra charge) your own breakfast and there’s no full-time staff on site. But Giorgos and Maria will point you in the direction of all the best local secrets. • From €100 a night (from €160 high season) for an apartment sleeping four, not including breakfast Getting there Thomas Cook, easyJet, BA and Aegean fly to Kalamata, an hour’s drive away. Car hire recommended
Syros, Cyclades
For Nick and Elspeth Geronimos, the Good Life is all about the humble pleasures that drew tourists to Greece before package holidays and fancy resorts. They have restored a smattering of 200-year-old cottages on Syros, an island with a lively year-round population and cultural scene. Surrounded by olive groves and vineyards, the self-catering houses are off-grid but brim with thoughtful features for families: washing machines, barbecues, filtered drinking water, baby equipment and kids’ bikes. You can help yourself to eggs, vegetables and fruit from the garden. It’s a five-minute stroll to peaceful Voulgari beach – ideal for toddlers. Older children can learn to sail or go pony riding. • From €90 a night for a villa that sleeps 4 (from €210 in high season), not including breakfast Getting there Ferries depart from Piraeus, Lavrio and Rafina to Syros (3 to 3½ hours); daily flights from Athens (35 minutes)

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW BEFORE GOING TO CRETE?
1. WHEN TO TRAVEL?
The worst time to visit Crete is the start of June, because at this time Greek students go on educational trips around their country and besides buzzing around the most popular sightseeing spots on the island, they don’t show much interest in the acquired knowledge and unfortunately disturbs others.
In July and August, air temperatures in Crete increase up to an average thirty degrees, especially when the island is reached by sirocco - a hot wind from the Sahara; so if someone does not mind the heat, but also the hustle and bustle, because the middle of summer is the peak of the tourist season, can boldly book travelling dates. Be aware that in August strong, winds called meltemi can blow on Crete and they are even able to turn over the sunbeds!
September is the perfect month for sunbathing and swimming, because the water in the sea is very warm, and the temperatures are not that high anymore, while the nights are still warm. The later autumn, the more rain, the colder evenings, but also the lower prices and the less tourists. If, therefore, you are setting out to explore Crete almost exclusively for little money, you should choose the period from November to March. Unfortunately, sunbathing in these months is practically impossible, and bathing in the sea is excluded due to high waves and gusty winds.
 2. HOW TO GET TO CRETE?
The easiest way to get to Crete is of course by plane. Depending on the place of residence, it is worth observing flights of low-cost airlines such as Ryanair, WizzAir and EasyJet. It happens that tickets cost less than 20 euro one way with hand luggage. I also recommend checking offers of travel agencies, where you can buy not only an organized trip, but also only the flights. There are two airports in Crete: near Chania and Heraklion; from both you can get directly to the city by bus for about 2.50 euros or by taxi for around 15 euros.  However, the plane is not the only way - you can also take a ferry to Crete from mainland Greece. Prices differ from the line and class, and seats are usually not numbered, so even in the higher class it is possible not to get one, which means standing the whole journey, if you are too late.
 3. HOW TO TRAVEL AROUND CRETE?
The easiest way to travel around Crete is by a rented car, for which you have to pay about 30 euros per day. It is worth renting a car with stronger engine, because the roads in Crete are winding and often lead uphill. In order to get to the most interesting beaches, you have to enter the gravel road and unfortunately, usually the insurance does not cover the repair of a tire punctured on such surface, so you have to be careful. You can rent a scooter for around 15-20 euros - helmets are mandatory!
There is no railway on the island, public transport is buses only. There is no problem with connections between larger cities, especially in the northern part of Crete, but to less popular places buses sometimes run only once a day and during the working week, so it is worth checking the timetable before the trip.
Hitchhiking in Crete practically does not exist, it is unlikely that the drivers will take tourists catching the ride, and it may happen that after the lift they will demand payment.
4. WHAT DOCUMENTS ARE REQUIRED?
Greece belongs to the Schengen zone, that's why EU-citizens will only need to have identity card on them and, of course, a driving license if they plan to rent a car or scooter. It is worth having a copy of the documents hidden in a different place than the original - preferably with you, in case of theft or loss of luggage.
 5. WHERE TO SLEEP?
The standard of Cretan hotels is expressed in letters, not stars and it looks like this: A = 4 stars, B = 3 stars, C = 2 stars, D/E = 1 star, L = de luxe. The most profitable is to rent villas as a larger group, preferably for a minimum of a week - then even in the season the price can be very low. In addition to traditional accommodation search engines, I also recommend using the website: www.grhotels.gr.
 6. WHAT TO EAT?
Greek cuisine is a typical Mediterranean cuisine, full of fresh vegetables, herbs, olive oil and seafood. Snails and juicy fruits such as watermelons and oranges are also popular, while tomatoes, aubergines and okras are dominating vegetables on the island..
The Cretans don’t eat red meat, because cattle is not raised there. The production of cheese is also negligible, which is why the famous feta cheese is usually imported and normally not eaten by the natives.
It is worth paying attention to the Cretan herbs, the variety of which is very impressive. On the island grows, among others: rosemary, basil, thyme, oregano, lemon balm, periwinkle, calendula, burdock, mistletoe and nettle.
 7. WHAT TO DO?
In Crete, you can easily indulge in blissful laziness (you can read about the most beautiful beaches HERE), or organize an active rest and not be bored a single day. Popular sports available for tourists include diving, sailing, rafting, mountain climbing, canoeing and golf.
