Crete Chronicles: Day 7
Today was my birthday, so I got to choose what we did today. So, we went to Knossos. From the villa we're staying at, it is about an one and a half hour drive to Knossos; so we had to get up early.
The drive was mostly uneventful, every now and then a reckless Greek, but nothing bad. We reached Knossos, and were a bit taken aback. There were at least five tourist busses in the parking lot.
But, we went in anyway. Sadly, it was too crowded to really enjoy the sights. And the guided tours were heavily annoying, the groups often times standing still for long times where we thus had to wait.
We looked around, seeing what there was to see but we quickly got bored. We went to the exit and back to the car.
We decided to go to the archeological museum of Heraklion and eat somewhere close to there. But as we drove there, the chances of that happening grew slim.
The traffic was annoying and the gps send us in the wrong direction numerous times. At this point we were just done with everything and we decided to go back to the villa.
We got lost multiple times in the labyrinth that is the streets of Heraklion, but somehow we managed to find the highway. We drove back to the villa, about halfway through having a break to drink some water and eat stroopwafels.
After a quick stop at Lidl, we went back to the villa. We lounged about, had dinner and had some coffee before deciding to call it a day.

A great place to make memories
I’ve been visiting this place since I met my husband over a decade ago. Coming from the Greek mainland myself, Crete -famous worldwide for its natural beauty, cultrural wealth and exquisite cuisine- always seemed to me like a wondrous place to visit; little did I know about Gournes, this little charming village by the sea close to Heraklion, the largest city on the island. However, what really got to me was this beautiful summer house with the colourful garden, I fell in love with it the minute I laid my eyes on it.
Are you familiar with the Greek island architecture? The picturesque white houses with blue doors and windows? This is the case of Villa in the Garden, a 90 sq.m. house built to accommodate the family’s need to relax and enjoy some serious quality time away from the fast-paced city life. The spacious patios offer access to a large garden that features an astonishing variety of trees and flowers (vaudevillians, jasmine trees, hibiscuses, rosebushes, indigenous lilies etc.) .
If you want to blow some steam off...
You’re at the right place! Enjoy every moment of your holiday, spend time in the garden, wander in the orchard, or relax on a hamstring under the thick shade of the eucalyptus and the palm trees. Go swimming, the beach is only 5 minutes away; go walking or riding a bike along the coastline at sunset, feel the cool sea breeze against your skin and let the glorious colours of the horizon amaze you. Visit the Cretaquarium, that is litteraly 10 minutes on foot from home, and discover more than 2,000 marine creatures.
Discover the wild beauty, geographical diversity and cultural wealth of Crete
Crete is the largest Greek island featuring an amazing geographical diversity: a beautiful sandy coastline along with imperious wild mountains, lakes, caves, waterfalls, canyons and valleys. From small villages to large cities and cosmopolitan destinations, the island welcomes a wide range of travellers from across the world.
Its long fascinating history has left tangible marks on the land & the people; no doubt, Crete is an island with a strong cultural identity that spans from unique local costums to art, music and an amazing gastronomy that is considered the quintessence of the Mediterranean diet. Long story short, there are endless opportunities to enjoy yourself, spend quality time with your loved ones and make beautiful memories that will accompany you throughout your life.
Are you ready for a lifetime experience? Find out more about Villa in the Garden!

Karteros, 3km of golden sand next to Heraklion
Karteros is a resort village, 7km east of the Heraklion airport. The bay of Karteros is 3,5km long. On this long bay there are two settlements, Karteros and Amnissos, but because of the rapid tourism development, the two villages are now merged to one.
In this beautiful beachfront, with the golden sand, you will find many hotels, restaurants, coffee shops and beach bars. Unfortunately, Karteros Bay is open to north winds, that’s why the sea is sometimes wavy. There are no rocks here and the waters are shallow, making ideal for families with small children. The less crowded side of the beach is located just next to the Heraklion airport and it is called Florida. In Florida ends up the river of Karteros which during summertime is dry. Around the area, there are two churches, St John and St Nikon, which are built inside a cave. The main beach of Karteros is very well organized and you can find all touristic amenities. The next beach east of Karteros beach is named Xenia, after a local abandoned hotel. East of Xenia beach is the hill of Paleohora. The archaeologists believe that this is where the ancient town of Amnisos was built. The excavations have revealed several buildings, a large temple and a Minoan harbour. To the east, you will find the famous Minoan Lilies villa. This villa is considered to be the resort house of King Minos. East of the villa is the last part of Karteros bay which is called Tobruk. Here you will find a lot of restaurants, hotels and fish taverns. The beachfront is also very well organized with a nice sandy beach.
Karteros is ideal for family holidays or it can be used as a base for exploring Crete. It is a little bit noisy though as the aeroplanes approach the landing airway of Nikos Kazantzakis airport from this part of the island.

Satisfying Youth Dreams in Crete
At the point when I was more luxury villas mykonos youthful, I needed to be a paleontologist. I was into Indiana Jones, the old world, and that large number of fantasies and legends probably founded on "history." My grandma cherished that stuff, and she ingrained in me an affection for it as well. Might Lord Arthur at some point be genuine? Did Jesus have a little girl? Have outsiders visited Earth? Was Atlantis genuine? Who knew?!
However, to my exhausted early-youngster, rural self, that's what I fantasized, perhaps as a genuine Indiana Jones, I'd figure it out.
I was particularly captivated by the Minoans, a civilization that prospered from 3000 to 1100 BC on the island of Crete, cresting from 1600 to1400 BC. They were a strong society, with running water and latrines and reservoir conduits some time before the Romans. The legends of Minos, the Minotaur, and Daedalus? That is all from the Minoans. They are additionally frequently remembered to be one of the potential starting points of the Atlantis fantasy.
Past the Minoans, I knew little of Crete past what I had gathered from articles and general common sense. I realized it made its own style of wine, a great deal of olive oil, was well known for its sea shores and, obviously, every one of the memorable vestiges. In any case, I couldn't actually let you know considerably more than that and, even those things I just knew in the vaguest terms.
In any case, fourteen days prior, I did right by my 14-year-old self and ventured foot onto Crete.
Crete is gigantic, estimating 3,219 square miles, and is the biggest island in Greece. With around a hundred sea shores, many authority climbs, about six significant urban communities, and lots of remnants, it calls for critical investment to appropriately investigate.
Tragically, I just had nine days. In such a major spot and with so brief period, I was simply ready to scratch the surfiest of surfaces.
In any case, that is travel and some time is superior to none.
This excursion, I burned through two days in Heraklion, one in Ierapetra, two in Plakias, one in Rethymno, and three in Chania. It was a "features visit" of the island.
Indeed, even with so brief period, Crete satisfied the picture I had developed to me such a long time. It's downright mind boggling.
To start with, it's is huge to such an extent that getting away from the crowds is simple. Outside a couple of well known sea shores and sanctuaries, there are places one can feel like you're the main traveler on the island.
Second, the sea shores are stupendous. Furthermore, they are shockingly shifted for a spot with a solitary environment. They were a reach: from white to yellow to pink sand, from rough to smooth, and in the middle between. One even has palm trees (which is phenomenal here). Anything ocean side you can summon to you, it's on Crete. What's more, with near 100 of them, you are never distant from one by the same token.
As somebody who loves absorbing the sun, a large portion of my time was spent on these sea shores, away from the groups, paying attention to the waves gradually lap the shore. The water was a reasonable, purplish blue that seemed to be the jungles than the Mediterranean, and a profound child blue farther. I hit six sea shores, with Elafonessi, Chrissi, and Balos being my top picks. I never realized Crete was a particularly extraordinary spot for an ocean side occasion!
Third, the scene rises and falls continually: mountains and slopes specked with olive trees then dive into gorges containing a portion of the island's renowned climbing trails. It's a dry environment as well, particularly in the east. Desolate in the late spring, it feels dry, similar to the land hurts for a drop of water. However at that point you travel west and inland a little, and you track down green slopes, ranches, and olive plantations and wonder about how rapidly the scene changes.
Crete's urban areas, going back millennia, diversion as you'd expect of puts based on remnants of before adaptations of themselves. I adored going through hours investigating every one of the little hiding spots of every city, attempting to sort out which rear entryway associated with which. You'd think you were going one way, just to wind up on a road that turned the other way erroneously. I tracked down Rethymno and Chania particularly amusing to become mixed up in.
What's more, the food? We should discuss Cretan food. On this huge and rich island, the hundreds of years have permitted occupants to develop a novel food and their own style of cheeses and wines. It's an exceptionally occasional eating regimen, comprising of greens, organic products, fish, a little protein, vegetables, grain rusks, and a lot of olive oil. You'll feast on a ton of fish, sheep, pork, and, surprisingly, a neighborhood escargot cooked in oil and thyme.
Presumably one of the most popular dishes is dakos, a dry entire grain bread you'll find all over, similar to a bruschetta. It's frequently served without help from anyone else, yet when requested as a starter, generally it's finished off with a tomato puree and cheddar (either feta or mizithra, which is whey cheddar).
Assuming that you're like me, the fastest way to your heart is through your stomach. The crunchy dakos, the pleasantness of neighborhood cheddar, the kind of the barbecued fish, and the variety of the wine — Crete had probably the best food I had my whole time in Greece.
However, the set of experiences made it wake up for me. I went through hours investigating each gallery I could find. The Archeological Gallery in Heraklion is home to an enormous assortment of Minoan curios (generally from Knossos). I became mixed up in their analyzing old coins, ancient rarities, frescoes, and sculptures. (Fun truth: The principal composed language of the Minoans, Direct A, still hasn't been interpreted. Their second, Straight B, is the principal composed variant of Greek!)
Also, there was the old castle of Knossos. I didn't track down the Minotaur. In any case, I tracked down a manual for show me around and I endured two hours investigating each region that was available to people in general. (Unfortunately, many rooms and regions are shut due to Coronavirus). Despite the fact that a large part of the royal residence is reproduced (and maybe incorrectly as well), it was cool and as similarly stunning to be there in fact. You realize that feeling you get when you've longed for a spot for such a long time and afterward you're at last there? That feeling of rapture and unadulterated satisfaction was the manner by which I felt as well.
All spots have a one of a kind energy. Its kin, history, climate, food, speed of life — every last bit of it meets up like instruments in an ensemble to make an objective's own novel orchestra. At times you vibe with that music, now and again you don't.
The energy of Crete was something I certainly flowed with. What's more, I'm appreciative that, whether I get back there, in the wake of developing it in my brain for north of 25 years, it satisfied every one of those youth dreams.

The property pays homage to its surrounding nature through the considered use of materials and textures. To ensure their vision was properly brought to life, the hotel’s owners sought out the best local Greek designers and craftsmen to collaborate with across the property for an authentic Cretan feel. The rough marble details, natural stones and unrefined wood complement the look and feel of the hotel. The final result is a boutique hotel that is well worth travelling for. The elegant design sensibility is proof that design is fundamental to well-being and that the right luxury resorts can help to transform the location that they’re in for the better. Sustainability plays a large role in the hotel’s ethos, with natural materials sourced from Crete such as stones and wood. Sheets and fabrics are all made from organic materials. Food is sourced locally from small farms on the island, all from an organic kitchen with plentiful vegan and vegetarian menu options available. Every suite and villa in the hotel are accompanied by saltwater private pools with breath-taking Cretan Sea views allowing guests to enjoy ultimate privacy in blissful surroundings. Crete Chronicles: Day 1
Today we got up at three am to go to the airport. Now, our flight didn't leave until 7.55 am, but we had to make a one and an half hour trip to the airport. One of the perks of being on the road that early, is that the highways are basically empty (apart from some trucks).
We parked our car far away from the airport, as it was cheaper to park there and we would be transported to the airport anyways. We reached the airport at around 5.40 am.
The check-in took quite some time as the systems couldn't handle all the people checking in their bagage at once. After everything was checked in, we moved on to the security check.
Security went quite smoothly, the queue moving steadily. Everything was okay and nothing needed to be double-checked.
After the security, we decided to get breakfast. I still wasn't really hungry, so I just bought an iced tea.
As we were waaay too early, we had to wait about an hour before we could go to our gate to board. But, thanks to priority boarding, we were on the plane quite quickly.
We had some delay as fuelling had some hiccups, but within 45 minutes we were in the air, on the way to Crete.
At 12.20 o'clock we landed on Heraklion Airport. The landing was a bit bumpy, but we made it. We quickly were let out of the plane and brought to the baggage-claim.
Now, this took so long. At first, everything seemed to go well, suitcase after suitcase rolled in. But then it suddenly stopped. No more suitcases came out. We still didn't have ours, so we had to wait. After about 20 minutes there came a new wave of suitcases, but mine still didn't come out.
Now, here I was getting slightly stressed. Airports from my country lose baggage quite often, so I thought that had happened to mine. But luckily, after ten minutes it came out.
After a quick bathroom break, we had to pick up our rental car. Here came another bump in the road. (Pun not intended). Apparently our reservation for the car didn't have insurance, so the lady at the desk cancelled our reservation and made a new one with insurance.
After that was taken care of, we dragged our baggage to the car pick-up point. There, we got our car. A slightly smaller one than the one we had initially thought of, but still big enough.
After playing some tetris with our baggage to get it in the car, we were on our way to the villa we had rented. Now sadly, this villa is still a one and an half hour drive from Heraklion so we had to sit and travel some more. But, we quickly got used to the Greek driving this way.
When we thought we had reached our villa, we couldn't find it. After driving in circles for a while, we finally managed to find it. It was hidden behind some big bushes.
After the car was maneuvered in the small driveway, we brought our baggage inside. The villa is even bigger than we had expected and has an amazing pool and a wonderful sunny terrace.
Now, we were getting quite hungry. (As we had completely skipped lunch and barely had any breakfast, or in my case no breakfast). So we drove to a nearby Lidl and got dinner and some quick snacks for in the car.
The snacks weren't amazing, but they helped to still our hunger. We arrived back at the villa and unloaded the groceries.
We had some drinks in the sun and chilled out for a bit. When the hunger kicked in again, we made dinner while jamming to some Eurovision 2023 songs.
We had dinner and unloaded our baggage. As we were still tired from getting up so early, we decided to call it a day. We drank some coffee/tea and went to bed.

DAY 87. OCT 27. Athens, Greece 🇬🇷
For our trip in Crete, Chels has done the majority of the planning around the island, but today is Sam’s itinerary! We are going to Athens, y’all!
We woke up bright and early and left our villa at 5:30am to drive to Heraklion airport (~75 min), where we caught our 8am flight to Athens. Everyone was a little sleepy but it all worked out! Logistics are quite different when there’s 11 of us, instead of the normal duo. When we landed in Athens, we made our way to the metro and rode it into the city, getting off at Syntagma Square.
Unfortunately, because we were flying from Crete we didn’t make it to the square in time to see the changing of the guard, but we all appreciated the beauty of the square all the same. From there, we walked to Hadrian’s Arch where we could see the temple of Olympean Zeus from outside the fence. It was really cool to see something that has been there since the Roman times. And the temple from even earlier! Tour guide Sam even prepared small wikipedia excerpts for the group so we’d learn a little bit about each monument.
After we marveled at the arch for a few minutes, we walked up to the entrance of the Acropolis it was incredible seeing all of this ancient city and the temples and the Parthenon 🏛 learning about how long it took and how much it endured was incredible. Our whole family loved it and it was also incredible to be up so high and see the city surrounding the acropolis below the old and new the balance and importance of this historic place.
We made our way down and we all were hungry so we headed to town and got amazing falafels that Sam had found! After that we split up some to shops and explore a bit we also found a yummy ice cream spot called melt it was so good! and the rest to head to a rooftop bar for some drinks and views of the acropolis and the city.
We all met up at the rooftop bar and had some drinks and then it was getting time to head on the metro and get back to our flight back to Crete! We made it back to the airport after some time and then to our cars and then drove an hour back to our villa! It was a full and wonderful day together exploring and sammy did an amazing job planning it all out!
