This intricate nest was created by a village weaver (Ploceus Cacullatus). The exact date of their introduction to the island is unknown but it is thought to have arrived with ships of the slave trade from West Africa. During breeding, males perform a spread-wing, flapping display at the best, often hanging upside down. Love this image of a little male village weaver doing what it does best by @catherine_conroy_photography! Weavers are famous for their nest building activities, leaving many intricately weaved balls of grass and plant material throughout the park and its rest camps. Not all weaver species weave though - the nest-builders are referred to as ploceus weavers and the males do the constructing during breeding season, hoping to impress and attract as many females into his humble abode as possible!
