This is one of my favorites. I found it when I was searching for fics that had some focus on Mordechai's Jewish background. I like how the author depicted their relationship (not because it isn't romantic), they show genuine care for one another and I want to read more.

Notices how tense you get when he mentioned on taking you to a trip to the lake. He wasn't blind nor was he stupid, the man could sniff out your PTSD a mile away but it was not his place to ask about your trauma.

Start's to rethink his plan for on the little anniversary for you both, he does not want you to be uncomfortable. That's the last thing he want's since this weakened is special.

When you do tell him, he hates that he planed something without knowing your fear and though you tell him it's fine Viktor desperately wants to change plans but when you insist you two spend most of your time in the tent or hiking through the woods.

If you ask to try to go in the water, Viktor holds you close and will only go in the water up to your knees. He keep's you in his arms and refuses to let you go.

Pins what you are afraid of right away and quickly tries to think of a way to remedy your fears though he doesn't know the exact reason why.

Think's that he can fix this because Mordecai does not like seeing you upset. Does his best to think of different ways he can help you.

Tries different ways to help, well he think's he is helping until he see's how scared you got when he mentioned on taming you to the beach and that's when you finally mentioned what happened to you and he regrets what he tried to do.

Once he learned of your fear, Mordecai keeps you away from any form of deep water and scolds anyone from wanting to try and take you in any place that deals with deep water. He's fine with that anyway. You're far more important than going swimming anyway.

•Serafine Savoy•

She already knew your fear and your trauma behind it since you told her. She doesn't mind it since everyone is afraid of something but she does keep a close eye on you.

It's when you two are at the pool and some boy's toss you in the deep end that she really see's how deep your fear is rooted. The woman swears she see's red as Nico is pulling you from the water.

Serafine hates seeing how scared you are, hates that you can't even hear her brother trying to talk to you. Your frantic cries or how you barely register that Nico is trying to calm you.

She is the one that ends up calming you down, pulling you into her chest as you desperately cling to her. She is soothing you while Nico goes to take care of the problem.

Serafine spends most of her time by yourside, she doesn't like you being alone. She doesn't trust any idiots near you, to help you. You're far too important to her than some silly pool anyway.

Doesn't really understand it but like Serafine get's it that people can be afraid of certain things.

Does his best to make light of it, to make you feel better. That its fine to be afraid of things, tells you his fears to make you feel better.

Jokes about he's fine staying away from lakes, pools or whatever that has deep water. Zib is fine with it. He'll happily sit on the beach, pool deck or dry land with you. It's better anyway, he likes to sleep in your arms.

Tease's about taking bath's with you as he lazily wraps his arm around your waist. "I'll keep you safe."

Everyone had bad days, Mordecai knew that having a handful of his own but you, just looking at you he knew something was wrong. He was never good at these things...comforting people but you just looked so hopeless not to mention his own feelings for you so he just had to help you.

Taking a step forward he cleared out his throat as he looked you over. He was silent for a moment once he sat down next to you. His heart hammering in his chest, Mordecai hated seeing you upset. "Are you....no of course you're not." He muttered as he reached out to you.

Letting out a small sniffle, you let your head rest against his shoulder. He wasn't about to complain, not with you anyways, never with you. So instead he held you. Did his best to comfort you in his own ways, he won't speak on the matter but he will always be by your side to pick up the pieces.

Though once Mordecai finds out while you're really upset he will take care of the problem because no one will get away with hurting you.

Viktor held his fair share of nightmares, he knew he had PTSD. You just can't escape surviving a war without coming home with a few mental scars. You would often help him with his own nightmares but now it was his turn to help you.

It was a particular job that went south, he heard about it through Rocky. How you nearly died, that the man trying to kill you died on top of you. He did not blame you for being traumatized, how could you not after what you saw.

Doing your best to stifle your sobs, you brought your knees to your chest. Viktors soft voice broke through your thoughts as you curled into his embrace.

"It is all right...I am here for you." Viktor muttered as he rubbed your back. "You can be scared, do not worry."

"I cannot remove the image from my mind." You muttered.

"You went through so much...just let it out." He whispered still soothing you.

Letting your eyes closed, you let out another sniffle as you nuzzled your face into his chest as you finally calmed yourself down. "Thank you."

"You do not need to thank me."

An Unlikely Friendship betrayed

Mordecai being repressed as all hell and having feelings for the first time in his life for his straight best friend and not dealing with that very well is of course pure delicious angst

But even with an entirely platonic attitude to the tuxedo that doesn't necessarily mean Viktor is less hurt by what happened

Viktor is a man who has always wanted to feel useful and needed. As a farm hand, as a soldier, as a manual labourer, as a handyman for his neighborhood, and as a bootlegger.

But unable to return to the land of his birth, tossed aside by the US government after serving his purpose in the war, losing an eye when striking for fairer pay and conditions, abandoned by his wife who took his daughter with her, Viktor has had that sense of purpose snatched away from him too many times. He starts working for Atlas as much because it offers him a new one as much as any gratitude he had for getting him out of custody.

A BIG part of that new purpose became watching out for and guarding the back of a younger tuxedo cat, trying so hard to appear cold and capable to conceal the desperate lost man inside. For whatever reason, despite all his noise, nagging, criticism, prickliness,and their regular arguements, this unlikely partner he spends most of his time with somehow achieves that rare feat of being considered a friend by Viktor "Vinegar" Vasko

He makes sure he isn't taking needless risks, he goes out of his way to retrieve his eye wear from half way up destroyed stairs in a burning building,he tries to help him improve his weak social skills, he wears a tie he offers him for Christmas, and seemingly even agrees to wearing a matching suit at the 1926 New Years party despite hating formal wear

He has a practical purpose as a mechanic, gunman and the muscle of the Lackadaisy gang, while more personally his circle is not much bigger than Mordecai's.

A good hearted but senile neighbor in Mrs Bapka, a young bright eyed girl who fills the gap where his daughter was, and his eccentric partner and likely both best and only friend.

But then Atlas dies, and not long after one of those people puts a bullet in his one fully working knee. We don't know to what extent if any Mordecai explained himself beforehand, but we have to assume Viktor believes like most other people that is was pure spite and self interest as he left them for their biggest rivals.

Not knowing it was a desperate measure to protect him

Now neither of his legs work properly, he is relegated to tending the bar which he must feel is as bad as being benched completely, and following the pig farmers attack, in part due to the robbery of their weapons by that same ex-partner, he currently can't even do that

He is left sitting at home feeling broken and useless without a clear purpose to keep him going, to distract him from the many bad memories hanging over him

All because of the one person he thought, after so many years, wouldn't abandon him, needed him, would always have his back

Not stick a knife in it.

Viktor and Elsa

A secret passion?

Viktor Vasko and Elsa Bastion (formerly Arbogast) clearly share a connection. This has been clear since the Defiance flashback

This perhaps shouldn't be that much of a surprise. They are both veterans of the Great War, they have both experienced and still bear the inner scars that come with the tragedy and brutality of war and the suffering it brings.

Elsa in her capacity as a nurse, who no doubt saw all manner of mangled and broken men, and Viktor the muddy, bloody, living hell that was the front line of the trenches. It only makes sense that such people would be able to understand each other in ways others wouldn't.

Elsa has no doubt spent plenty of time treating wounded soldiers and seen the emotional anguish, and so would be able to see through that sour intimidating facade that keeps most people at arms length. While Viktor could find reassurance in the company of a kind and compasionate woman like Elsa

But many fans have found themselves wondering if there could be more to it than that.

Viktor spent some time staying at the arbogast household, and it seems in that time Elsa got to know Viktor very well, learning more about his life than even Ivy, someone that can approach Viktor much easier than most as a stand in daughter to him, and even to the extent she knows Viktor would never have agreed to let her put herself in danger

Viktor for his part may also feel more than just friendly towards her, if the face he makes when she is finally able to get through to him by phone to inform him about Ivy putting herself in danger is anything to go by.

Having been in a pit of deep despair over the memory of his far away daughter, plus the poor state of his health with compromised knees and a hole in his chest, hearing from her seems to make that normally scowling face soften

But before we all jump on that bandwagon and "Viktor x Elsa" become our new Lackadaisy otp, we have to consider the jolly British elephant in the room.

Bobby Bastion

Bobby is another war veteran and it was though their service that they met just after the war and later married.

He appears to be a very jolly and affable chap (relative to most bootleggers anyway), which may well be what drew Elsa to him in the first place. Someone who could counter her melancholy from the dark times they went through

He seems to be very aware and considerate of his wife's relative melancholy, by Elsa's own admission leaving a very lucrative funeral trade in the big city to move too a small quiet community that offered little business but gave Elsa the peace and quiet she needed (like Viktor it seems she hates "noise, noise, noise" thanks to the war).

Their involvement in bootlegging in the first place it seems was to compensate for this and provide the income to sustain this relative isolation

But despite this, perhaps their diffent mindset has become more of a barrier between them rather than something that compliments each other?

As the family illustration suggests, Bobby is relatively content and able to smell the flowers, while Elsa remains haunted. Bobby's humour also seems to have little effect on Elas's mood

Could it be that Elsa would be drawn to someone like Viktor, someone who suffers from the same trauma as her and may be more willing to admit to the pain, than a husband who despite the best of intentions is trying to just smooth over the problem? Quite possible

But even with that strong connection and bond between them, even if there is a mutual spark, does that suggest an actual affair? That's the big question here.

While arguably not handling his wife's troubles in the best way, Bobby seems to be a loving husband doing his best for his wife who he cares for deeply. Is Elsa the type of person who would cheat on her kind husband for helping in the "wrong way"?

Plus Bobby not only shows no sign of concern about Viktor staying with them and being around his wife, but, (despite his brother in laws interuption) mentions that he was very grateful for Viktor's help and actually saw him as almost "part of the family"

Is this a case of "ignorance is bliss"? Does he simply blindly trust his wife so much that the possibility doesn't even occur to him, or does he know her well enough to be certain that infidelity is something she simply would not do?

But this is all speculation at this point. What do you think?

Is poor Bobby blind to what happened under his own roof? Is it a matter of two people feeling an attraction but tragically unable to act on it due to circumstances? Or is it just an innocent matter of two wounded souls with shells and screams still ringing in their ears recognizing the scars on each other and offering some understanding?
