TheLreads, Vigilantes ch 121, Replies Part 2
1) “Aizawa what the fuck, you guys are the cavalry
Well, until All Might get here that is
Sorry koichi, you already got put on the bench for the finale of your own story.”- Koichi’s fine with that. He likes the bench, it’s his comfort zone. 2) “Apparently yes it is. Can’t believe that Groose came back for the finale.
Suck it, Captain Celebrity, you’re less important than fucking Groose.”- Well, up until the epilogue and Koichi needs a “friend” overseas to emigrate with.
3) “I have a feeling you’re having fun with this, Aizawa.”- He’s protecting a child, fighting a villain and teaching a valuable life-lesson (always listen to Aizawa) all at the same
4) “YOU MOTHERFUCKERS KNOW THAT’S NOT HIS NAME WHAT WERE THE LAST THREE YEARS EVEN FOR AGAIN?”- Some things never change. Frankly, Koichi had to leave the country before he could get away from the name.
5) “THANK YOU TENSEI, YOU’RE ABSOLUTELY DOING A PHENOMENAL JOB GETTING PEOPLE AWAY FROM THE MONSTER.”- It’s not like he can knock them out to transport them away from the danger that way. Heroes have to convince civilians to leave the hot zone without physically manhandling them unless in cases of immediate danger, least they risk a lawsuit being filed.
6) “PFFFTTT-
Alright that never gets old. Can’t wait for him to yeet Koichi into the crowd”- Aizawa’s not in it for the fame, but dam if it don’t sting every time somebody brings up his anonymity.
7) “oh my god every single motherfucker to ever show up decided to appear for the finale, we’re going full shonen now”- It’s like All Might vs AFO again. Unfortunately, Nomura ego is much more fragile than AFO’s and everybody egging on Koichi to win against him just makes him spiral into his final self-destructive attack. 8) “good fucking job Koichi
Besides, they don’t even know your actual name even after three years.”- The advantage of fame is not always a good one. Ironically, Izuku’s completely avoided that with the masses in his own series through sheer chance, despite being the guy that AFO’s evil plan is not focusing on going forward. 9) “How many times are we gonna make the Nomu cry in this story honestly?”- As many times as it takes to make him sympathetic and tragic, like Tomura. I think it’s a bit of a wash at this stage, frankly, but Furuhashi’s not on to quit. 10) “Oh you’re still thinking? Even though your brain is pretty much frying from the inside out?”- What Nomura’s focusing on doesn’t require a lot of brainpower. Just killing Koichi and hating him for how he’s getting everything in life he ever wanted.
11) “Well he never asked for it. Also, to be fair, it all happened because you decided to mess with him, otherwise he literally would have stopped and lived a normal life.
Good job McBee.”- Villains traditionally create their own heroes, but Nomura truly went out of his way in his efforts to become the hero of his story, and in the end, all he did was pave the way for Koichi to rise to success through his one-sided decision to antagonise him. 12) “…
I swear to god if we have another one-winged angel transformation…”- Well, kina? Less transforming into a new form and more splitting what he has down into a more-unstable version of his humanoid plasma self. 13) “Fear not, all those building were conveniently empty.”- And now Nomura goes out the same way he introduced himself to the public; sic’ing a bunch of exploding “minions” on civilian targets. 14) “Poor Groose, hopefully he had a hearing aid support item after going to school with them.”- Honestly, as his best buddy, Aizawa should have one of his own, after being around him all the time.
15) “OH MY GOD WHAT THE FUCK IS IT NOW”- It’s another excuse to crack out the booze! @thelreads

You are a Child of God
Therefore, it is beneath your dignity to kiss the earthly rings of tyrants and shine the boots of oppressors.
Remember that your kingdom, like Christ's, is not of this world. When Jesus taught that we should render unto Caesar that which is Caesar's, he meant money. Not souls. Not the dignity and self-possession that is ours by birth.
It is against our religion to accept violence from the State—not for ourselves, and not for others. Read D&C 121-123 again. That's what they say. That's what they mean.
How can we hold any other position when the Prophet Joseph Smith was executed through vigilante justice? How can we choose false imprisonment for anyone when it was exercised against our own people so many times?
The God who told our prophet and our people "fear not what man can do" in the face of state violence will not forgive us if we side with jailers of the innocent. Not in this moment. Not in any moment.
Seeking redress against state violence is a sacred duty bestowed upon us by God. D&C 123:7 says "It is an imperative duty that we owe to God" not to allow such things to stand as long as there is anything we can do to stop it.
If you need the words to express to the Trump supporters in your life why supporting the current administration is immoral and unacceptable for us as a people, here they are. To love our neighbors as ourselves means we cannot tolerate their oppression because it (allegedly) benefits us in any way.
God has withdrawn protection and prosperity from our nation because our people have supported and allowed this evil to happen to our neighbors. It will continue until those who are responsible repent. And if they don't, the promised suffering that was promised to our own oppressors will come upon us:
13 Also because their hearts are corrupted, and the things which they are willing to bring upon others, and love to have others suffer, may come upon themselves to the very uttermost;
14 That they may be disappointed also, and their hopes may be cut off;
15 And not many years hence, that they and their posterity shall be swept from under heaven, saith God, that not one of them is left to stand by the wall.
There is moral rot among the Saints in the United States. If we do not purge it from among ourselves through repentance and restitution to those we have harmed through this corrupt administration, we will be destroyed from the earth by that administration. We will fall into the pits we have dug for our neighbors. And we will have no one but ourselves to blame.

PART 4
Chapter 11
October 2023
The day everyone returned…
Calina counted down the seconds slowly.
186, 185, 184…
She concentrated on holding her position - knees locked, forearms braced against the carpet, and gaze fixed straight ahead.
167, 166, 165…
Nika’s wet nose nudged against her cheek, but she shooed the dog away. “We’ll play later. Go lie down.”
140, 139, 138…
The Widows were on a rest period. A series of back-to-back missions in far-flung locations across the world had worn them all out. So the powers that be had granted them a week off. It was only day two, and Calina was bored.
122, 121, 120…
The other Widows were currently in the rec room, watching a movie and gorging on popcorn. Calina didn’t enjoy movies now. Or reading. Or dancing, or baking, or any of the other hobbies that had once passed her time.
The serum saw to that.
So she was in her room, alone, working out. She’d started with a hundred sit-ups, then a hundred pushups. Now she was in a plank, trying to beat her own record.
99, 97, 96…
The exercise reminded her of meditating with Matt all those years ago. The stillness of it. The way it helped focus the mind, in order to free it.
79, 78, 77…
She liked that she could think of Matt now, and not have it spark off a torrent of grief and pain. It made her wonder if she even needed the serum anymore. She’d been taking it for three years, after all. And it had been more than five years since the Vanishing. Maybe enough time had passed.
Maybe she’d be fine now, without that crutch.
55, 53, 52…
She spied a stray vial of the serum under her bed. It had rolled there after she’d dropped it last week. She stared at the amber liquid, and tried to remember what it was like to feel - to really feel something - instead of just the hints and echoes she sometimes experienced.
40, 39, 38…
She shook her head, banishing those dangerous thoughts. She concentrated instead on the slight tremble in her arms and the burn in her stomach muscles as she fought to hold her form.
22, 21, 20…
The blare of an alarm broke her focus. She collapsed to the floor as the siren screamed from the corridor outside her room. Nika started barking, adding to the cacophony of noise. Then the tannoy system kicked in. “All able-bodied personnel, gear up and report to Helipad B. Repeat, all able-bodied personnel report to Helipad B.”
Calina sprung to her feet and hastily shoved on her Widow’s suit over her sports bra and shorts. She grabbed her weapons, flung open the door, and started sprinting through the compound, Nika bounding beside her.
“What’s going on?” she asked Sonya as the other Widow emerged from the rec room. She’d been injured during their last mission, and was hobbling around in a walking cast. She’d obviously been left behind when the rest of the Widows had raced towards the helipad.
“No idea.”
Calina slowed, and put a hand under the other Widow’s arm. Sonya waved her off. “Go. I’ll catch up.”
Calina nodded and started running again. She barrelled through the back door of the compound, raced passed Nika’s agility course and through the small wooded area that separated the barracks from the helipad.
As she emerged into the clearing, she saw the other Widows checking their guns, braiding their hair, and priming their Widow’s bites.
They were gearing up for a fight.
She found her second-in-command. “What’s happening?”
Drassa nodded to two asian men standing in the centre of the helipad, both dressed in robes in muted shades of blue, yellow and purple. Calina recognised them as being Masters of the Mystic Arts - the same order that Dr Strange used to belong to. “They need our help, apparently.”
“What for?”
The older of the two sorcerers answered. “To build an army. In order to defeat Thanos, once and for all.”
“Thanos is dead.”
“One version of him is.”
Calina frowned, and looked around at the other Widows for answers. But they all seemed as confused as she did.
“We don’t have time to explain,” the sorcerer called out. He had a kind face, but his voice was firm and his eyes held the look of someone ready for battle. “My name is Wong, I’m the Sorcerer Supreme, and I’m here to tell you that a war is taking place in New York, right at this moment. We’re looking for volunteers for the fight. It will be brutal - like nothing you’ve ever faced - but we need as much help as we can get. The entire universe is at stake.”
Calina swallowed, a tiny hint of fear leeching through her glass barrier. ‘No pressure’, she thought.
The sorcerer - Wong - stretched his arms out in front of him. He held the left in place, and made circles with the right. Sparks erupted in the air, which coalesced into a spiral before stabilising as a glowing golden portal. “I have to gather more troops. Those of you who wish to fight, follow Ariann.” He nodded to his companion, before stepping through the portal and disappearing.
Calina looked at her teammates - her sisters - and could see fear and trepidation on their faces. But also determination. “Are we doing this?” Calina asked.
But she already knew the answer. They’d all been battling for years to try to make this world a better place. They’d taken on gangs, and thugs, and cartels and cults. They’d killed and been wounded, and suffered under the weight of their failures.
But they’d always kept on fighting.
Calina didn’t know each individual Widow’s reason why. Whether it was because they knew of no other life, or because they wanted to balance out some of the bad they’d done under Volkov’s command, or simply because they felt it was the right thing to do.
Whatever their reasons, they kept on fighting. And today would be no different.
“Of course” Sanvi said.
“Obviously,” Drassa replied.
Each Widow in the clearing gave their version of ‘yes’.
Even Nika woofed, as if offering her own assent. Calina crouched down next to her dog. She scratched behind her ears and smoothed the thick fur over her back. “Sorry, Neek, I don’t think this mission is for you.”
Nika was a great soldier when it came to stealthy incursions and recon work. But she wasn’t built for war. And Calina couldn’t bear to lose her - she remembered the love she held for this dog, even if she couldn't feel it. She looked to Sonya, the only Widow unable to fight. “Watch her for me?”
Sonya nodded and called Nika over to wait by her side.
“It’s time,” Ariann said, his voice soft and calm despite the circumstances. He performed the same magic as the other sorcerer, and within seconds a golden gateway was waiting for them.
Calina moved to the front. She was the leader, and one of the oldest and most experienced of the group. It was only right that she go first.
She glanced over her shoulder, at the rest of her squad milling behind her. “Survive,” she ordered them.
Then she took a deep breath, and stepped into the unknown.
———
The sky was black, smoke from burning rubble blotting out the sun. Calina blinked, adjusting to the sudden change from the bright light of Geneva. Then she took in the rest of her surroundings. Small fires blazed in the wasteland that used to be the Avenger’s compound. Calina recognised it from the lake in the distance, but everything else looked alien - literally. An enormous black spaceship filled the sky, spewing out dragon-shaped ships - the same ones that had reigned terror on New York over a decade ago. And on the ground, hundreds of creatures amassed in a horde behind an armoured Thanos.
Seeing him in person - the despot responsible for the single most devastating event in Calina’s life - caused a wave of anger to overtake her. The force of the emotion was so powerful, it broke through the serum’s numbing effect. Calina clenched her jaw, and grabbed both guns from her holsters.
The Widows on either side of her armed themselves too, and the army surrounding her - growing in number by the second as more and more portals opened - prepared for battle. Calina didn’t spare them a glance, her focus on the enemy across the field.
Then it was time to engage, and with a thundering roar, Calina and the Widows and the rest of Wong’s army descended on Thanos’ troops.
Chaos ensued.
The sounds of gunfire, and thunder, and the clashing of giant creatures deafened Calina as she fought against alien soldiers. Lightening forked through the sky. Ships fell from above, and crashed to the ground. Bright blue energy bolts blinded her, and the heat of explosions seared her skin.
But she kept fighting. She knew she was no match for the larger combatants, so she concentrated on doing as much damage as possible to the more humanoid aliens and the smaller, six-legged creatures that scurried over the field like rats. She fired and fired until her ammo ran out, then grabbed whatever discarded weapons she could find and kept on fighting.
Until something went horribly wrong.
She was stabbing a creature with an electrified spear when something very large blotted out the dim light of the crater she was standing in. Drassa screamed a warning at her. Calina looked up in time to see an 8-foot-tall leather clad and heavily-muscled alien drop into the crater next to her, his landing shaking the ground beneath her feet. Calina dropped her spear and ran from him, up the edge of the crater. She scrambled to reach the safety of the ridge, but before she could make it, she heard the whistle of air as the alien swung his giant hammer-like weapon. She felt the crushing blow against her legs, then she was suddenly airborne from the force of the hit.
She crashed back to the ground several feet away, the pain of the impact stealing her breath.
Then the pain stole everything else, and her world went black.
———
November 2023
4 weeks later
“Miss Balashova?”
It took a few moments for the strange sounds to form themselves into words.
“Miss Balashova, can you hear me?”
At first they were distant, as if coming from the end of a long, echoing tunnel. Then louder. Clearer. Until Calina realised they were being spoken by someone right next to her.
And they were talking to her.
She was Miss Balashova.
She was Calina.
More sounds intruded. The steady beep, beep, beep of a heart monitor. The hum of electricity. Soft shoes padding across a tiled floor.
Then sensation. Soft padding beneath her back. A pillow under her head. Cool dry air over her skin.
With sentience returned, Calina tried to open her eyes. Her eyelids felt heavy, like she needed all her strength just to flutter them open. A crack of bright light appeared, searing her with pain.
“Take your time,” the voice said. “Your eyes won’t be accustomed to the light.”
Why?
What had happened to her?
Calina struggled to remember. She’d been in Geneva. Then someone had come to them for help…
A golden portal.
A dark sky.
A battle.
The pain in her legs…
The steady beeping suddenly sped up. Calina could feel her heart start to pound in her chest in time with the staccato beeps of the machine.
“Please be calm,” the voice said. “You’re in a medical facility in Wakanda. You were portaled here after being injured on the battlefield in New York. But you’re fine now. It took a little longer than expected, but you’re fine.”
Calina forced her eyes to open, needing to gauge that for herself. Needing to understand what ‘fine’ meant. Because she remembered what had happened to her legs. She remembered them being crushed by that alien’s weapons…
And there was only one way to save her from that type of injury.
Amputation.
She blinked against the light again. Then slowly turned her head to look at the person standing next to her. It was a young woman.
“My name is Shuri. This is my lab, and you’ve been in a healing stasis for the last four weeks. We’ve just weaned your sedation, so you may still feel a little weak and groggy.”
‘Weak’ was an understatement. As Calina tried to take in her surroundings, each movement felt like wading through wet cement. Eventually she was able to glance down, and saw that her lower half was enclosed in some sort of plastic pod.
But it was clear plastic…and through it she was able to see her legs.
Her intact, still attached, and apparently uninjured legs.
She wiggled her toes, as if to prove to herself that what she was seeing was real. “How?” she croaked out, her throat dry and scratchy from disuse.
“Cutting-edge stem cell regeneration therapy,” Shuri explained. “We essentially rebuilt your legs. I can only take part of the credit. I was working on the technology prior to the blip, but my team perfected it over the next five years. This”—Shuri patted the plastic pod— “is also proprietary tech. It's designed to stop infection while you heal. It also provides sedation and pain relief and administers electro-stimulation to your muscles to prevent atrophy. Which means you should be up and walking in the next couple of days.”
Calina frowned, the thought of walking right now feeling impossible. She could still barely move. And her eyes felt heavy again.
So heavy…
“It’s fine,” Shuri said, her voice sounding further away, back in that tunnel again. “You can sleep now. We’ll talk more when you wake up.”
Calina felt the pull of unconsciousness…and gave in.
———
The next time she woke, the process was easier - like drifting out of sleep, rather than dragging herself from the depths of some abyss. She opened her eyes and realised she was in a proper bed, half propped up against a stack of soft pillows. She looked around, and saw four similar beds to her right, and three on her left, only two of which were occupied.
The room she was in was large and round, at once industrial-looking - with large steel beams and a black glossy floor - and high tech, with walls formed of read-outs and scans, all glowing in orange. Technicians and doctors milled around a series of pods on the opposite side of the room - presumably containing people who needed even more healing that she had.
If that was even possible.
Still unable to believe that she really was okay, Calina shifted up the bed until she was sitting properly. Then she removed the thin sheet covering her legs and studied them. They looked like her legs, albeit paler than they were before.
That’s because the skin is brand new, the analytical part of Calina’s brain observed.
That fact was proven by the absence of the scar that used to run down her right shin. Two years ago, she’d collided with a rock while parachuting into Cambodia. She'd sustained a large laceration which had healed with a thick shiny scar.
But it was gone now.
She tentatively flexed her ankles. Then bent and straightened her knees. Rotated her legs at the hips, checking her range of movement. But everything felt fine. More than fine, in fact. The faint stiffness she’d carried in her right knee since her fight with Matt all those years ago was gone.
She laughed out loud, the sound almost delirious. They really did build her legs. It felt like something out of a science fiction movie. But considering her old legs had been crushed by an 8ft-tall alien during a battle for the fate of the universe, the fiction part of that equation was all relative.
Calina was so engrossed in studying her new extremities, she didn’t register the woman walking towards her across the laboratory floor. Not until she softly called out her name.
“Calina?”
Calina glanced up.
And saw a ghost.
———
Katya knew she’d made a mistake straight away.
Anya had told her to wait. To let Calina hear the news from someone else. To let her have some time to process. But Katya thought she knew better. She thought what Calina needed was to hear the truth as soon as possible. And she’d thought her friend would be so happy to see her, the shock of her sudden appearance wouldn’t matter.
But she’d been wrong.
So wrong.
When Calina glanced up after hearing her name, her face drained of all colour, and she actually flinched away from her, her whole body recoiling.
“It’s okay,” Katya said, taking another step closer. Which was another mistake.
Calina practically jumped out of the bed trying to get away from her. Her legs wobbled briefly and she clutched at the wall to keep her balance. “Y-you’re dead,” she stuttered, shaking her head.
“No, Calina. I came back. We all came back.”
“What? When?”
“The Avengers fixed it. They fixed what Thanos did - that’s what led to the battle in New York.”
Katya had blinked into being again in the middle of Central Park, Anya by her side. The two of them - with Calina - had been walking Yelena’s puppy down a leafy footpath before they’d been unceremoniously snapped out of existence.
Barely minutes after the shock of their return had worn off, a sorcerer had appeared in front of them and they’d been transported to the middle of a war zone. After victory had been won, they’d taken stock of the wounded…and found Calina. Katya and Anya had been in Wakanda ever since, watching over their sister and willing her to heal.
Now that she had, Katya had been too excited to wait.
Hence, her colossal mistake.
Calina shook her head, as if trying to process the news. The machine monitoring her heart beat sped up, the fast beeps ringing out across the room. “You- you all came back?” she panted, her breathing faster now too. One of her hands went to her chest and she clawed at the collar of her medical gown.
“Yes,” Katya replied, slowly coming around the bed. “Calina, you’re scaring me. Why don’t you get back into bed, and I’ll call a doctor,” she said gently.
Calina didn’t seem to hear her. Her breathing got faster still, and she stood there panting as if she’d just ran a marathon. “Did Matt…?” she whispered, tears filling her eyes.
“Yes. Matt came back too.”
A harsh cry escaped Calina. Then she suddenly collapsed. Katya lunged forward to try to catch her, but Calina fell to the floor, her knees cracking harshly against the black tile. She stayed there, hunched over in a ball as she struggled to breathe.
The machine went crazy, alerting the doctors on the other side of the room. They came running, and managed to get Calina in bed. She was hyperventilating now, her breaths coming in shallow hitched sobs, her eyes wide and panicked.
“Calina!” Katya cried, as one of the nurses pulled her away from the bed.
A doctor grabbed a syringe from a nearby cart and injected it into Calina’s arm. Calina took another strangled breath, then slowly collapsed back onto the bed.
“Is she okay?!” Katya called out again. “What the hell is happening?”
One of the doctors came over to reassure her. “It looks like a panic attack. We’ve sedated her, and she should be fine when she wakes up.”
“A panic attack?”
Calina had never panicked in her entire life.
What the hell was going on with her sister?
———
The answer came a little later that evening, courtesy of Shuri.
Katya had gotten to know the Wakandan princess a bit over the last month. She was the head of the scientific facility, and an exceptionally intelligent woman. She also wasn’t known to sugar-coat things.
“Calina was on some kind of drug.”
“What?” Katya said.
“Are you sure?” Anya asked. “That doesn’t sound like Calina.”
“We ran a toxicology screen before she was put in the pod - standard procedure. It flagged up an unknown compound. My team have been analysing it in our spare time - not that there’s been much of that around here.” Shuri sounded somewhat disgruntled. Her thoughts on all the outsiders filling her medical beds were well known, but Katya suspected it was all a front - Shuri would never turn away someone in need. She was too kind…and too scientifically curious.
“We think we’ve got to the bottom of it now.” Shuri handed them a printout of her findings.
Anya took the documents and started skimming through them. She shook her head. “No. This can’t be right.”
“What is it?” Katya asked. She grabbed the papers from Anya but couldn’t make sense of all the chemical formulas and notations.
“It looks like a modified version of the serum,” Anya explained. “The serum.”
Katya reared back in shock. “How is that possible?”
“I don’t know what serum you’re talking about,” Shuri said. “But best we can figure, the stuff Calina was using targeted the neurotransmitter signals within her amygdala. It would have significantly dampened her emotions - if not blocked them completely. Which may explain her reaction earlier.”
“In what way?” Katya asked
“If she’s been chemically blocking her emotions, she may not have the ability to process them now. They might all feel so overwhelming that it-”
“Manifests physically,” Anya finished. “As a panic attack.”
“Right,” Shuri agreed.
The two of them started discussing the other side-effects and unintended consequences of messing with the amygdala, but Katya tuned them out. She was still feeling dazed at the thought of Calina being back under the serum’s effects.
She couldn’t understand it.
And she needed to know one thing above all else:
Had someone dosed her against her will?
Or…had she willingly done it to herself?

On August 27, Sabir Malik, a migrant worker in the Indian state of Haryana, was lured from his home and beaten to death by a mob of at least 10 Hindu men. They suspected that Malik, a Muslim, had eaten beef. Lab tests run by local police would later find that he hadn’t. But it didn’t matter: The attack was led by “cow vigilantes,” the name for Hindu nationalist militias and mobs that take it upon themselves to violently enforce Hindu supremacy on India’s minority communities, particularly Muslims.
A new report from the Center for the Study of Organized Hate (CSOH) shared exclusively with WIRED found that Instagram, which is owned by Meta, is becoming a key avenue for cow vigilantes to share their violent exploits with a wider audience, and even raise money.
“It's clear that Meta is complicit in the proliferation or the flourishing of cow vigilantism in India,” says Raqib Hameed Naik, founder and executive director of CSOH. These practices, Naik says, are likely in violation of Meta’s own policies around hateful and violent content.
Between February and August 2024, CSOH identified and analyzed 1,023 Instagram accounts run by users involved in cow vigilantism. Researchers found that 30 percent of the accounts shared content showing physical violence against Muslims involved in the cattle business. Some videos flagged by CSOH show high-speed car chases down India’s highways, where cow vigilantes tail and try to pull over trucks carrying cows. Others are more graphic, showing vigilantes beating men who they claim are engaging in cow slaughter or the cattle trade. One video, which garnered 5,200 likes, showed three frightened Muslim men in the trunk of a car. Another video shows a cow vigilante beating an older Muslim man with a wooden bat. That video received more than 1,200 likes.
The 121 Instagram Reels analyzed by CSOH showing physical violence against people transporting cattle garnered over 8.3 million views, and most were not labeled with the Meta filter that warns users of graphic content. CSOH found 53 accounts that had posted violent content were eligible for Instagram’s “Send Gift” function, which allows approved creators to earn money directly from donations from their followers. Other accounts would post bank details in their Reels or comments sections. “That means anyone on Instagram who likes their work can send them money to continue doing that violent extremist activity,” says Naik.
To test Meta’s systems, CSOH reported 167 posts that depicted violence using Instagram’s on-platform reporting systems. None of the posts had been removed as of October.
According to Meta’s policies, it does not allow “content that glorifies, supports, or represents events that Meta designates as violating violent events,” including “hate events” and “hate crimes.” Meta spokesperson Erin Logan told WIRED that Meta has “strict policies against violent or graphic content on our platforms, and we enforce these rules impartially. We will review this report once we are provided it and will remove any violating content and disable accounts of repeated offenders.” Logan declined to answer questions about whether Meta considers cow vigilantes as part of “violent or hateful groups.” Last year, the company removed profiles associated with Monu Manesar, a cow vigilante who was arrested and accused of instigating violence in Haryana.
Cow protection is not new in India, where Hinduism holds cows sacred. But the country also has a substantial minority population that includes Christians, Muslims, Buddhists, Sikhs, and Adivasis, or indigenous people, that have no religious prohibition against eating beef. Dalits, the group at the bottom of the Hindu caste system, also sometimes consume beef. Due to their marginalized status, Muslims and Dalits in particular have long relied economically on the cattle industry.
Since India prime minister Narendra Modi and his Hindu-nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party swept into power in 2014, several states have passed stricter laws when it comes to cow protection. A Congressional Research Service report released last week noted that cow vigilantism was one of several types of “religiously motivated repression and violence” used by Hindus and supported by the country’s Hindu nationalist government against minority communities. According to an April report from Armed Conflict Location and Event Data, cow vigilantism was the motivator for 22 percent of all communal violence by Hindus targeting Muslims between 2019 and 2024.
“Vigilantes organize their targeting to disburse punishment to minorities through extrajudicial means,” says Angana Chatterji, chair of the Political Conflict, Gender and People’s Rights Initiative at UC Berkeley. “Hindu nationalist leaders in government have aligned with these militias, and their speeches often function as dog whistles to rally people, reportedly stirring them to commit these extrajudicial acts that have included home invasion, theft, and lynching.”
Chatterji says that making the violence public on a place like Instagram allows cow vigilantes to recruit new members and rally other Hindu nationalists in different parts of the country. “For Muslims and minorities and their allies, Instagram messaging is calculated to spread terror with impunity,” she says. “To indicate, ‘Stop protesting. We are going to come for you and there will be nothing to stop us,’ especially as law enforcement is often either absent or in collusion.”
Naik worries that the problem is much deeper than just the accounts he and his team were able to identify. Earlier this year, Meta shuttered CrowdTangle, its tool that allowed researchers to track content across its platforms. “I would say it's the tip of the iceberg,” says Naik, because there is no public access to Meta’s data for journalists and civil society organizations.
India is an important market for Meta—it accounts for more than 362 million users on Instagram alone—and in the past, the company has been hesitant to take action on content that could put it in the crosshairs of the Indian government. In 2022, The The Washington Post reported that Facebook allowed hate speech and propaganda to stay on the platform under pressure from India’s government. (Meta’s shareholders later voted against an inquiry into the issue.) In 2020, The Wall Street Journal reported that employees in India worried that Meta’s then-head of public policy for India was unevenly applying the company’s hate speech policies to allow violent rhetoric from Bharatiya Janata Party politicians to stay up on the platform.
“It is interesting to note what is stopped by social media platforms—because some messaging is stopped immediately—and what is allowed to grow,” says Chatterji. “Just the extent of violence in the images requires that they should be taken down.”

Fuck my liver, it had it good enough for too long, it is time for it to get its head back in the game. That's right, it Vigilantes time. The brainstorming is going smoothly so far, but with every chapter I go through in the actual series I feel like I'm digging myself deeper with that idea. Anyway, that's a problem for the me of the future, let us get started, with Chapter 121: Reinforcements.
Tumblr media
Right where we left, dead jeanist telling the mob of morons that it might be a good idea to move away from the giant monster destroying everything.
Tumblr media
yeah, All Might will be here any second now.
Any second now...
I'm starting to feel like he's gonna show up at the last chapter, probably will be here for Pop's funeral.

If you think that's bad you should see him back at the main series.
What's left of him at least.

Plot
edit
Suzu Naito is a third-year high school student living in the rural Kōchi Prefecture of Japan, with a lost passion for singing and songwriting. As a child, Suzu witnessed her mother rescue a girl from a flooding river at the cost of her own life and thus resents her for "abandoning" her for a stranger's child. Suzu remains in contact with a group of older choir teachers who were her mother's friends but is alienated from most of her classmates, except her childhood crush and self-appointed protector Shinobu Hisatake, popular girl Ruka Watanabe, sportsman Shinjiro "Kamishin" Chikami, and her genius best friend Hiroka "Hiro" Betsuyaku.
At Hiro's insistence, Suzu signs into the popular virtual world "U" and is appointed a beautiful avatar with freckles (through the AI engine's biometric analysis[7]), whom she names "Bell", the English translation of her own name. Upon logging in, she finds herself capable of singing again. With the assistance of Hiro, who appoints herself Bell's manager and producer, Bell becomes a hit on U's music charts, and people start referring to her as "Belle", meaning "beautiful" in French.
During one of Belle's concerts, an infamously strong and near-unbeatable user, "The Dragon" (or "The Beast"), arrives, fleeing from the Justices, a vigilante group led by the self-righteous Justin, who fight the Dragon and accuse him of disturbing the peace of U. Justin plans to unveil the Dragon's identity to the public using a specialized program mostly reserved for U's owners. Intrigued by the Dragon, Suzu begins to gather information about him. She discovers that he is popular amongst children, who consider him to be their hero. She meets the Dragon and his five guardians AIs. Belle and the Dragon grow close. In the real world, Ruka confides to Suzu that she has a crush on Kamishin. Suzu helps the two confess their feelings.
In U, Justin captures and interrogates Belle, threatening to unveil her identity to the world if she refuses to cooperate. The Dragon's AIs rescue Belle, but their intervention allows Justin and his group to locate the Dragon's castle and burn it down. The Dragon flees before Belle can find him. Suzu and Hiro work to find out the Dragon's real identity before Justin can and warn him. They find out the Dragon is a third-year junior high school student named Kei who is being physically and verbally abused by his father; Kei's protectiveness over his younger brother, Tomo is what gives the Dragon his unbeatable strength in U. Suzu contacts Kei offering help. Kei does not believe that she is Belle, and generally distrusts everyone who offers him help, since nobody has ever followed through. Shinobu, Ruka, Kamishin, and the choir teachers reveal their knowledge of Belle's true identity and urge Suzu to sing to gain Kei's trust. Suzu unveils herself to the world in the U and sings. Tomo convinces Kei to trust her and they try to contact her again. When Kei's father sees that evidence of his abuse has been posted online, he terminates their internet connection before Kei can tell Suzu their address.
Using context clues, Ruka and Kamishin deduce that Kei's hometown is Kawasaki, Kanagawa, near Tokyo. Since authorities cannot intervene on abuse charges until 48 hours have passed, Suzu locates Kei and Tomo on her own and protects them from their father. The next day, she and her father warmly greet each other at the station. Shinobu praises Suzu for her bravery and deciding she no longer needs his protection, finally feels free to pursue the relationship he has always wanted with her. Finally understanding her mother's selfless actions, Suzu makes peace with her death.

Production
edit
While Studio Chizu worked on the project, they had help from veteran Disney animator and character designer Jin Kim and Michael Camacho on the design of Belle and studio Cartoon Saloon for the background work of the world of U.[13][14]
Hosoda initially intended for Belle to be a musical, but considered the idea difficult due to Japan not having a culture of making musicals. However, he still wanted music to be central to the film, so he searched for a protagonist who could sing. He stated that he preferred the same person doing both speaking and singing voices to make it convincing and searched for a singer who could express their feelings through song and move people, even if they don't understand Japanese. He then found Kaho Nakamura, whom he considered relatively unknown, but a perfect choice for the role. Hosoda stated that Nakamura was also involved in writing lyrics, so she could feel the lyrics she was singing.[15]
Release
edit
GKIDS acquired North American distribution rights in June 2021, and released the film theatrically with a nationwide release date of January 14, 2022,[16] and previews in select IMAX theaters on January 12,[17] [18]
Sale rights to the film outside Japan were handled by French company Charades who pre-sold the rights internationally, including Kismet in Australia and New Zealand, Anime Limited in the UK,[19][20] Ireland and France (with Wild Bunch), and Koch Media in Italy and German-speaking territories. The deal size was due to the popularity of Japanese anime and the international status of Mamoru Hosoda.[21]
Music
edit
Main article: Belle (soundtrack)
The music for the series was composed by Taisei Iwasaki, Ludvig Forssell, and Yuta Bandoh. The soundtrack album was released on August 18, 2021, by Ariola Japan.[22][23]
Reception

Belle is the third-highest-grossing Japanese film of 2021, accounting for ¥6.53 billion in box-office rakings as of December 12, 2021.[5][6]
In the film's U.S. opening weekend it made $1.6 million from 1,326 theaters, and a total of $1.8 million over the four-day Martin Luther King Day holiday frame.[24][25] The film dropped out of the box office top ten in its second weekend with $570,213.[26] The film was released on May 17, 2022, on DVD & Blu-ray by GKids (through its distribution partner Shout! Critical response
edit
On the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, 95% of 129 critics' reviews are positive, with an average rating of 7.9/10. The website's consensus reads: "A remarkable story brought to life with dazzling animation, Belle finds writer-director Mamoru Hosoda setting a brilliant new benchmark."[28] Metacritic, which uses a weighted average, assigned the film a score of 83 out of 100, based on 31 critics, indicating "universal acclaim".[29] American audiences polled by PostTrak gave the film an 86% positive score, with 63% saying they would definitely recommend it.[30]
At the 2021 Cannes Film Festival, the film received a 14-minute-standing ovation.[31][32] Joe Morgenstern wrote for The Wall Street Journal that "There's too much plot for the film to manage, but its heart, and sumptuous art, are so firmly in the right place that its appeal comes through sweet and clear."[33] Manohla Dargis of The New York Times praised the visual quality, character development, worldbuilding, and called the film "unfailingly touching."[34] Justin Chang of the Los Angeles Times praised the visuals and story, writing "It’s a tale as old as time and as newfangled as TikTok, in which the virtual world, though packed with fantasy and artifice, can bring startling truths to the surface."[35]

The film has received five Annie Award nominations, including one for Best Independent Animated Feature. Its total makes it the second most nominations for a Japanese anime film ever at the awards, tied with Ghost in the Shell (1995), and behind Suzume (2022) and The Boy and the Heron (2023).

Aside from that, they are dating Byakuya Togami (one of my main f/o’s 💖)
they are also 149cm in height! (4’11” in cm), their weight is 55kg (121 lbs) and their chest size is 28” (70 cm)
Full Body reference underneath!

TheLreads, Vigilantes ch 121, Replies Part 1
1) “Fuck my liver, it had it good enough for too long, it is time for it to get its head back in the game. That’s right, it Vigilantes time. The brainstorming is going smoothly so far, but with every chapter I go through in the actual series I feel like I’m digging myself deeper with that idea. Anyway, that’s a problem for the me of the future, let us get started, with Chapter 121: Reinforcements.”- With an anime now on the way, I think it’s high time I also got back to trying to finish this blogging. 2) “Right where we left, dead jeanist telling the mob of morons that it might be a good idea to move away from the giant monster destroying everything.”- Truly, Furuhashi has captured the spirit of any citizen nearby a spectacle, trying to find the sweet spot between safety and a good view and oftentimes misjudging the distance.
3) “yeah, All Might will be here any second now.
Any second now…
I’m starting to feel like he’s gonna show up at the last chapter, probably will be here for Pop’s funeral.”- Actually, it’s only one more chapter, just in time to upstage Fires Georg once again!
4) “distressed denim
I’ll keep that one close to my heart forever.
Probably will store it where my liver used to be.”- Always good to throw out things you no longer need. That liver was only weighing you down anyway!
5) “well thank you a fuckton edgshot, it’s not like we can’t see him from halfway across town by just looking up.”-Also, he’s made of plasma, and thus, glows in the dark. Like a walking nightlight just being around him, especially in still-dark lighting conditions like this.
6) “…
Sure, enlisting civilians to help is absolutely something heroes do on a regular basis. fine. it’s not the first we saw of it anyway, and here comes another bottle of gin”- I’m willing to say this was something Ingenium did on his own initiative given how many sidekicks he’s got operating underneath him, he’s trying to spread them out to maximise efficiency.
7) “No Koichi you can’t die now, we still need to bury Pop first, get your soul back to your body right this instant boi”- It’s ok, Aizawa’s here to bind them together for him! 8) “…
now what the fuck was that Aizawa”-  Aizawa showing that the medical world missed out on a skilled prodigy here, if he can perform first-aid at a distance using nothing but his wrappings. 9) “Also, don’t worry Aizawa, he can cover his whole body with his quirk, you don’t need to bandage him. whatever the fuck you managed to do that.”- Well, Koichi still needs to focus to achieve that armour shielding/brace around himself, and he can’t use it to help fix his damaged internals. Aizawa providing him some kind of relief is appreciated, especially since Koichi’s pretty much run out of steam to fully fight on his own anymore.
(Vigilantes ch 109)
10) “Oh right, that reminds me, what about Aizawa?”- Koichi’s other mentor is here to give him physical support alongside Knuckles’ spiritual aid once the situation turns into that Kaiju attack straight from the opening chapters. Don’t you just love a good book-ends?
(Vigilantes ch 110)
11) “Yeah Koichi, by the way, what about Aizawa?”- Still waiting for his turn in the spotlight helping Koichi, needs to wait for Knuckles to finish up his surprise visit first. (Vigilantes ch 110)
12) “Oh nice, at least that did got some real blood flowing, Koichi is slowly getting into the beaten state that brings forth heroes”- Did you mean “brings forth Koichi’s inner heroism” or “brings forth heroes to help Koichi on his last legs”? Either one works now.
(Vigilantes ch 115)
13) “No and shut up Koichi, you’re delusional because of the blood loss, there is no All Might, he’s a figment of your imagination. This fight will end the good and christian way
that is, some other hero is gonna save your ass. Probably Aizawa.”- Well, he did step in, but only after Koichi finallystepped up and saved himself instead of waiting for somebody else to do it.
14) “If you think that’s bad Aizawa you should see what your students will get too back in the main series.
Boy, are you not gonna have a good time.”- I cannot help but wonder how often Aizawa’s reminded of Koichi’s antics by Izuku’s own recklessness.
15) “Also, now the million dollar question: will Aizawa’s quirk do something against McBee, or is his presence here will be as awkward misplaced as that arc about his past?”- Short answer, No, but he’s still got a handy mobile body to help pull Koichi around with. Not to mention, all it takes is one good look and Aizawa shutting off Nomura’s Quirk – which is the only thing holding him together – kills him instantly, so have to avoid that outcome so he and Koichi can have a proper send-off. 16) “well, that’s fucking conveniently, isn’t it? I mean, it makes sense, but knowing that wouldn’t, I don’t know, lead to you getting a support item to help deal with it? You know, lenses to correct the brightness so you can use your quirk?”- Once again, Aizawa’s nerfed because he has too little support items to actually fight as a hero without the fallback of his own Quirk to even the playing field. If he had more tech, such that using his Quirk was the backup ploy, he might actually resolve more issues even Fires Georg.

Excerpt from: Spider Gwen and the Small Town Spider Person
“And there are at least three others?”
“Many, but the most active are Ninja Talon, who SpiderGirl often teams up with, the Shadow, the fourth vigilante and Dafoanairi,” Nikki answered.
“So, the fourth doesn’t identity themselves?”

Excerpt from: Consequences
Charlie wasn’t sure. He had been keeping tabs on what was happening. He was sure that the parents had a case.
At the same time Mr. Salt was talking to his lawyer.
“…Given what you have told me about the lack of safety features in the factory, I think you have a very good case.”
“What about her anguish?”

Excerpt from: Mysteries of Aurora
Freya returned to Sigrun Sigurdottir Hall as the sun set. It had been a very good day. ‘It’s good that I’m able to get that support when I need it.’
Dana saw Freya enter the Dining Hall. She wondered how her day had gone and waved. Freya waved back as she headed to the servery.
“…And so Alexia and I then went to the sports center,” Freya concluded.
“Sounds productive.”

Excerpt from: Spider Quinn
“Dafoanairi?”
Dafoanairi groaned. She rubbed her arm. “I’ll be fine, other than a bruise, but he’s getting away,” she said as she grabbed the quarterstaff and allowed the Enigma to pull her to her feet.
“We have to just keep up and stop him hurting someone until nightfall.”
“It might not be as simple as that, but it’s a better plan than having none.”
“True,” the Enigma said as she turned and began following William again.
Trent opened the door to find Quinn at the door. “Hey, Quinn, Daria’s not here.”
“She isn’t?”
“No, she just dropped Janie off, apparently.”
“Oh, she’s looking for the fourth vigilante,” Quinn said.
“That’s what Janie said.”
“Can I talk to Jane, then?”
“She has gone out again,” Trent answered.
“Oh, I’ll be off then.”
After Trent closed the door, Quinn ran across the road to the woods and then changed to SpiderGirl. She then took out her portable radio.
“…Reports are coming in of the fourth vigilante and Dafoanairi chasing some bestial looking man to the south of Eichler Street, heading towards the hospital.”
“The hospital,” SpiderGirl murmured. “Why would he go there?” She had some idea. ‘Is it because Osborn is there?’ She then started swinging in that direction.
The Enigma and Dafoanairi ran up to the main entrance of the hospital. “There are too many entrances to cover,” Dafoanairi pointed out.

Mariner arrived at the spot. “Rutherford! Tendi!” she called into the Jefferies Tube.
There was no answer.
“Great! I have to go after them,” she groused as she entered the Jefferies Tube.
But she didn’t have to go far before she heard them.
“…And so, the sensors should be able to pick it up earlier,” Rutherford said.
“Thanks,” Tendi said. “I don’t want to cause problems.”
Mariner then spoke up as she came up to them. “Oh you’re already are.”
“Did Cerritos send you here?” Rutherford asked.
“What do you think?” Mariner asked.
“Of course she did,” Rutherford said. “Because I disabled the speakers in this area before I started work.”
“And I didn’t want to be disturbed either,” Tendi added.

“True, but I know where he is and can move to block. We could delay him long enough.”
“I hope that will work out.”
“Probably won’t,” the Enigma responded. “But I will try.”
SpiderGirl arrived at the hospital and saw William approaching and the Enigma and Dafoanairi waiting at the main entrance. ‘I know Harry is here with his father. I’ll warn him as the usual Quinn first,’ she decided. She swung to the roof where she changed and then headed down.
Harry was aware that the Hospital staff were anxious about something and he had heard about a dangerous person loose in Lawndale from radio. He then saw Quinn enter the room. “Quinn? What are you doing here?”
“Hi, Harry,” Quinn said. “Daria told you about the boy who’s been writing those poems, right?”
“She did,” Harry confirmed.
“Well, it turns out that his parents were keeping him locked up because of something Oscorp did to him.”
“What do you mean?”
“There was some sort of drug trial and somehow it caused him and others to transform when they were exposed to sunlight,” Quinn answered. She walked over next to his father. “He may be on his way here.”
“Oh,” Harry said. “I promise, I’ll look into who may be responsible.”
“But he believes that your father is responsible.”

Excerpt from: Spider Quinn
“You mean, he’s coming here now?”
“Yes,” Quinn answered. “And some of the vigilantes are in action in the hospital trying to stop him.”
“Which ones?”
“The fourth vigilante and Dafoanairi, and SpiderGirl not long after them.”
“Great, the fourth vigilante and SpiderGirl could fight,” Harry groused.
“Stay here, watch your father. I’ll be back.”
“Wait!”
“I won’t be in danger,” Quinn said as she dashed off.
“I’ll try to protect you, Father.”
Meanwhile, Peterson pulled up outside the Hospital, near the Emergency Room. ‘Yet another thing going down in Lawndale, and it seems SpiderGirl, Dafoanairi and the Enigma are already responding.’ She hoped that the Enigma had given thought to what she had talked to her the previous night and wasn’t intending to confront SpiderGirl in the hospital. She got out of the car and headed inside.
William came up to one of the hospital’s side doors and found the fourth vigilante waiting. “You couldn’t stop me before,” he said.
“No, but I can delay you.”
“Until nightfall, I doubt it.”
“Like, we’ll see,” the fourth vigilante said.

Excerpt from: Spider Quinn
He looked around and saw a window open on a higher floor. ‘There!’ he thought. He turned around.
‘What is he doing?’ the Enigma asked herself. She was tiring but still quite alert.
She the saw William running up. ‘Two can do that!’ she thought as she lowered her forcefield and pointed her hands down, ready to jump up.
William then jumped up towards the open window, but the Enigma also jumped as she pushed downwards telekinetically and fired projections.
William collided with the Enigma and she found herself pushed through the open window.
“I’m in!” William said as he clambered off of the Enigma and ran out of the room.
“Come back here!” the Enigma called out as she clambered up. ‘Dafoanairi and I need some walkie talkies!’ she thought.
At the same time, Quinn entered the Emergency Room, where Brittany was still waiting for her X-Ray.
“Quinn?” Brittany asked when she came up to her and Ashley-Amber.
“There’s something I need to talk to you about,” she said in a serious tone.
“Sure,” Brittany said.
“Right now?” Ashley-Amber said.
“It’s to do with school,” Quinn dissembled.
Brittany raised an eyebrow at that, and smirked a little.
“What is it?” Brittany asked once she and Quinn were out of earshot of Ashley-Amber and the other people in the waiting room.
“William is here, at the hospital,” Quinn said quietly.
“How did that happen?”
“She’s after Osborn because of what was done to him.”
“That’s not good!” Brittany said in concern.
“And the Enigma and Dafoanairi are also here.”
“And you’re concerned about that too?”
“Yes,” Quinn answered. “I thought I would let you know.”
“Thanks.”
Quinn was about leave the Emergency Room when Peterson appeared. “Quinn?” she asked. “I’m sure you know about William being here.”
Quinn nodded.
“I’m about to put the Hospital on lockdown, so if you’re going to do something, you need to be quick about it.”
‘She definitely still suspects,’ Quinn thought. “I’m just me,” she said.
Peterson sighed. “You can trust me, Quinn. I know you are more than who you appear to be. But, go, help the other two who are here.”
