Webtoon Canvas is pay-to-win now, I guess.

DISCLAIMER: All of the series I show here is for the sake of comparing statistics and criticizing Webtoons' Super Likes system. I have nothing personal against these series or their creators and I do not want anyone to get the impression that I am encouraging any sort of action against these creators. The following rant is merely my own observations and opinions concerning Webtoons itself as a platform.

I found out today that Webtoon has implemented a Super Likes ranking board.

This does exactly what it sounds like - it ranks Canvas series based on how many Super Likes they have. Whether or not this ranking board is on a weekly rotation (like the Originals rankings) or just overall, I don't know, but something immediately felt off with this system and it took very little time at all to realize what was really going on here.

When you actually click on the series listed here, it'll tell you how many Super Likes they've accrued overall. The first thing that made me raise an eyebrow was the fact that the Super Likes listed in the ranking boards isn't the same as what's listed in the comics' landing pages, but I chalked that up to a simple delay on WT's end as I can assume the ranking board doesn't refresh at pace with whatever Super Likes are coming in.

But the real red flag was this:

Limitless : Untold is a series with 1,657 followers and seems to get an average of 35-45 likes per episode.

But it somehow has 1,715 Super Likes?

Anyone who's run a Patreon, Ko-Fi, Ad Revenue, or any other sort of revenue-based system with their content will probably realize how that doesn't add up. The reality is that regardless of how many readers / followers you have, only a small fraction of them will actually spend money on your work or to support you. Not every person reading an Originals series is FastPassing. Not every person reading a webcomic is supporting the creator on Patreon. This ratio is even apparent outside of income-based statistics - for example, not every person who follows will read new updates each week and hit the like button (which is why you can have a comic with 1700 followers that only gets a few hundred views and a handful of likes per update). This ratio can be influenced by all sorts of different things, but one thing that doesn't typically happen is for the ratio to flip itself in this fashion.

To put it bluntly: how can a comic with a high of 45 likes in the past 3 months possibly accrue 1,715 Super Likes since it was launched just last week? You've probably already come to the conclusion on your own, but for those who haven't: there's very strong evidence to suggest that creators are buying their own Super Likes to get on this ranking board.

That's assuming the worst of this, though - after all, maybe some of these creators just have super supportive friends who are tossing them a ton of Super Likes? It costs $1 for 5 of them, in this example the amount of Super Likes comes out to approximately $343 (assuming my math is right lmao) which isn't massive amounts of money but it's, again, still really impressive for a comic with only 40 likes on average.

Bu Limitless : Untold isn't the only one in the rankings board that's like this. In fact, the top three spots are occupied by webtoons with the same tilted ratio.

But then, suddenly, after those top three positions, the following webtoons Super Likes totals that make a LOT more sense and reflect the usual ratio more accurately:

The Little Trashmaid, one of the most popular Canvas webtoons of all time and the first one to hit the 1 million subscriber mark in the Canvas section has only accrued 355 Super Likes so far... and you seriously want me to believe a comic like Limitless : Untold with only 0.08% of its readership is somehow genuinely earning five times the amount of Super Likes?

I want to make it clear yet again that I have nothing against the series that have managed to break the system in their own favor. None of this is meant to "slam" them or judge their work or anything of the sort, I'm simply comparing the numbers here and coming to a very reasonable conclusion as someone who's well aware of how ratios like this tend to work in webcomics and content creation. It's just not feasible for the top three comics in the Super Likes ranking boards to organically earn that many Super Likes relative to the sizes of their audiences, especially when compared to the bigger comics that are only pulling in a fraction of that amount. The ratios of Super Likes : actual likes for those bigger comics actually looks reasonable and expected, the ratios for the smaller comics that are sitting at the top are not.

If anything, Webtoons has created a broken system and these creators are simply using that system to their advantage. And I'm not necessarily going to fault them for that because I can get wanting to do whatever it takes to get eyes on your work.

But it does raise the question of what kind of system Webtoons has cultivated here - a system where creators are resorting to Super Liking their own episodes to bump themselves up in the leaderboards.

And before anyone asks me how I can be so sure that these creators are Super Liking their own works - I literally opted into the Super Likes system myself and proceeded to Super Like one of my own episodes.

(this is like the one helpful thing with my work still being on WT even though I'm not updating there anymore, it lets me test shit like this LOL)

So yes, this is a thing that creators can do and it would certainly explain the massive discrepancy in the ratio of Super Likes : regular likes for these smaller series.

This is literally pay-to-win. And who do we have to blame for this? Webtoons, full stop. Not only for implementing a ranking board for an optional monetization service while still allowing creators to use that monetization system to support themselves as a way to climb up that ranking board, but for creating this gross psychological dependency on the platform as the "only way" to build an audience, to the point that people are now paying Webtoons out of their own pocket just to have their thumbnail visible in a ranking board and maybe get some extra views (and 49% of their money back if they hit that $100 threshold). And on top of all that, further putting on the pressure of competition and 'exclusivity' among many budding creators who are doing what they do for free and for fun. Why are creators now being forced to compete in a metric that's solely determined by how much expendable income their own audience has?

Sure, at least this means creators can get themselves into a ranking board by their own power unlike the other categories that are hand-picked by Webtoons and / or determined by daily stats, but at what cost? The literal financial hit of paying for advertising with extra steps, and the ethical dilemma of essentially paying for potential views with microtransactions. This is no better than paying bots on Instagram to follow your profile and inflate your worth to those who aren't following you. None of it is real, it will not legitimize your work to throw money at Webtoons just to have your thumbnail visible in a ranking board. These are microtransactions meant to benefit Webtoons, not you, the creator.

The sun reached past the skyline, its soft golden hue blending into light pinks and purples. Beautiful. That’s how Taesan would describe it, however, there was a more beautiful sight next to him. You. He quietly admired how the sun smiled at you, making you look more breathtaking, even as the sun began to hide behind the clouds.

“It’s pretty, isn’t it?” You manage to say after finishing chewing a chocolate-covered strawberry. Your eyes sparkle in wonder and awe at how beautiful the world is, mind drifting to how lucky you are to have found Taesan. He gazes fondly at you, quietly whispering, “Yeah. The view is really breathtaking.” You didn’t know he was referring to you.

Shaking his head, he lets out a small giggle, picking up a cracker. As he chews, you turn to him, grabbing both sides of his face, and squishing his cheeks. You laugh, the kind of laugh that makes him think of his childhood and makes him fall for you more.

"I love you.” The words fall from his lips so easily as though loving you has become his second nature. Eyes momentarily flicking towards your lips, he smiles softly, slowly leaning in. You gaze up at him, tracing small circles on his cheek with your fingers, getting lost in his eyes. You lean in, closing the gap between the two of you, and the world stops. His lips move perfectly against yours, a silent profession of his enduring love for you. It's a sweet kiss, the kind of one that you've only dreamed of with violins playing in the background.

You both pull away, blushing and laughing through hushed "I love you's". Taking another strawberry, you bring it up to Taesan's mouth, giggling as he takes a bite. You finish the rest of the half-eaten strawberry as the soft colors of purple, pink, and orange reflect on your picnic blanket. There was nothing better than doing nothing with him. In other words, it was a perfect Valentine's Day, and both of you cherished moments like this.

Companions of Christmas, Dec 1: Santa Claus

Santa or Saint Nicholas (“Santa” means “Saint,” and “Claus” is short for “Niklaus/Nicolas) was born to wealthy parents in a small port city in Asia Minor. Nicholas became a gift-giver at a young age when, upon learning that three sisters who wished to wed their loves could not do so because they had no dowry with which to pay their future husband’s family, he tossed coins through their window in the dead of night. Finding that he could so easily change lives for the better and bring hope to those who had little through these small acts of generosity, he sold his property and belongings and used the money to continue helping those he found in need. As he was already following his god Jesus’s order “sell what you possess and give the money to the poor,” it was only natural that he would adhere to the next dictate “then come, follow me,” which he did, becoming first a Christian priest, and, soon after, the bishop of Myra.

Nicholas, a noted brawler even during his bishophood, never backed down from a fight in service to others. He frequently found himself rescuing the innocent from execution, saving children from those who would exploit them, and battling monsters and creatures long viewed by the Christians as servants of evil. But instead of killing these foes, Nick would recruit them. Using both force and Christian magic, he would make them accompany him on his errands and missions of mercy, and the exposure to his generosity and kindness changed their perception and their hearts, turning them from forces of destruction to forces of good, though few lost any of their wildness.

Nicholas was born a mortal man, and died one, at the age of seventy-three, on December 6, 343. His devotion to his faith and service to his neighbors ensured his place in heaven, but heaven was no paradise for Nick, who fretted constantly for the children of the world. He petitioned the three aspects of God for a charter, to return to earth and bring joy and comfort to its children through acts of charity and joy. His charter was granted, and he returned to earth one year later, and he has done his good works each December since.

She didn’t expect them to go towards Phoenix’s house, more specifically towards the beach behind Nat’s house. She blinks as he rolls the Bronco to a stop, smiling back at her, “...oh I see.” she smiles, “This is the special place,huh?”

Rooster nodded with a grin, his eyes sparkling. "Yeah, this is it," he confirmed, his tone filled with anticipation. "I thought we could use some time away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, just you and me."

Beatrice's heart swelled with warmth at Rooster's thoughtful gesture. She glanced out the window, taking in the breathtaking view of the beach stretching out before them, the sound of waves crashing against the shore filling the air with a sense of tranquility.

"It's beautiful," she murmured, her voice filled with awe.

Rooster reached out, taking Beatrice's hand in his as he leaned in to press a tender kiss to her lips. "Not as beautiful as you," he whispered, his voice soft with affection.

Beatrice's cheeks flushed with heat at Rooster's sweet words. She leaned into his touch, returning his kiss with equal fervor. "You always know how to make me feel special," she admitted, her voice barely above a whisper.

Rooster smiled, his eyes shining with adoration as he gazed into Beatrice's eyes. "You are special, Bea," he said earnestly, his tone filled with sincerity. "To me, you're everything."

With a shared smile, Beatrice and Rooster stepped out of the Bronco, the warm sand squishing beneath their feet as they made their way towards the beach. They walked hand in hand, the salty breeze tousling their hair as they strolled along the shoreline, the sun sinking lower on the horizon.

They walked in comfortable silence for a while, content to let the sound of the waves and the gentle rustle of the palm trees fill the air between them. It was a rare moment of tranquility, a chance for them to reconnect and reaffirm their love for each other.

Eventually, they came to a secluded spot on the beach, a cluster of rocks jutting out into the sea. Rooster led Beatrice to a spot where they could sit and watch the sunset, the sky painted in hues of pink and orange as the sun dipped below the horizon.

They settled onto the rocks, their shoulders brushing against each other as they gazed out at the breathtaking view before them. Beatrice leaned her head against Rooster's shoulder, reveling in the warmth of his embrace as they watched the colors of the sky shift and change.

"It's moments like these that remind me how lucky I am to have you in my life," Beatrice murmured, her voice soft with emotion.

Rooster wrapped an arm around Beatrice's shoulders, pulling her closer as he pressed a kiss to the top of her head. "I feel the same way, Bea," he whispered, his voice filled with tenderness. "You mean everything to me."

She chuckles softly, “Oh stop it.”

He reached up, gently tucking a loose strand of hair behind her ear as he met her gaze with a warm smile. "I'm serious, Bea," he insisted, his eyes shining with sincerity. "You're my rock, my anchor in this crazy world."

“And it’s been crazy.”

‘Very.”

She leaned into his touch, her fingers tangling with his as she returned his smile. “It’s been a while since we’ve been here."

Rooster nodded, a nostalgic smile tugging at the corners of his lips. "Yeah, it has," he agreed, his gaze drifting out towards the horizon. "But it feels like just yesterday when we first knew I was just a goner when it came to you."

Beatrice's heart fluttered at the memory, “Go on."

“Well,” he chuckles, “You were wearing that dress…you are the cutest drunk ever and I was just…If I didn’t ask you on a date soon I’d go insane. Everyone wanted me to do it too- god Nat almost grilled me every single day.”

“And they all had bets on us.”

He snorts, “They all had bets on us.” he licks his lips, “It just feels nice knowing my gut feeling was right.”

Beatrice's cheeks flushed with heat at the memory of that night, a fond smile playing on her lips. "I remember that," she replied, her voice tinged with amusement. "I…was so nervous, and I was… well, a little tipsy."

Rooster chuckled, his eyes sparkling with mirth. "Yeah, you were," he agreed, his tone laced with affection. "But even then, you were the most beautiful woman in the room."

She leaned in closer to him as her cheeks warmed up, resting her head against his shoulder as they watched the sunset together. "And you were the most charming man," she murmured, her voice barely above a whisper. “Still are.”

Rooster smiled, pressing a tender kiss to the top of Beatrice's head. "I'm glad I worked up the courage to ask you out," he admitted, his voice soft with emotion. "It was the best decision I ever made."

Beatrice smiled up at Rooster, her eyes shining with love. "It was the best decision I ever said yes to," she replied, her voice filled with sincerity. “...;I’m sorry for being so nervous when you asked,I don’t think I ever apologized.”

He gives her a weird look, “You don’t have to apologize.” he says, “At all…gorgeous it’s completely understandable.”

Beatrice shook her head, a small frown forming on her lips. "I know…but I still feel bad about it," she admitted, her voice tinged with regret. "I was just so caught up in my own insecurities and doubts that I almost let the best thing in my life slip away."

Rooster reached out, gently cupping Beatrice's cheek and turning her face towards him. "Hey, hey,none of that matters now," he said firmly, his eyes locking with hers. "We're here, together, and that's all that matters. And I put a ring on your finger and we got three kiddos already. I say that’s a success."

Beatrice's eyes softened at Rooster's words, “And you are about to be promoted.” his eyes flickered for a second and she smiles gently, “Still nervous about it?”

"A little bit," he admitted, "But I'm trying not to let it get to me. I know I've worked hard for this promotion, and I'm ready to take on whatever challenges come my way."

Beatrice reached out, threading her fingers through Rooster's as she squeezed his hand gently. "You've got this, Roos," she said confidently, her voice filled with unwavering support. "You're the most capable person I know, and I have no doubt that you'll excel in your new role…what bothers you about it still? Did you write your speech?"

Rooster's gaze softened at Beatrice's words, gratitude shining in his eyes. He squeezed her hand back, feeling a sense of reassurance wash over him at her unwavering support. "Thanks, Bea," he murmured, his voice filled with warmth. "And yeah, I wrote the speech...several times. And I threw them all away."

Beatrice chuckled softly, her smile widening at Rooster's admission. "You always do that," she teased gently, her tone affectionate. "But I'm sure whatever you come up with will be perfect."

He grinned, his shoulders relaxing as he leaned in closer to Beatrice. "I hope so," he replied, "I just want to make sure I do justice to the occasion, you know?"

"I know," Beatrice said softly, her gaze unwavering as she met Rooster's eyes. "But remember, you don't have to be perfect. Just be yourself, and that'll be more than enough."

Rooster's smile softened at Beatrice's words, and he leaned in, pressing a tender kiss to Beatrice's lips, savoring the warmth of her touch. "Thanks, gorgeous," he murmured against her lips. "I needed to hear that."

Beatrice smiled against Rooster's lips, “Tell me what your wrote.”

“Huh?”

“I’m your audience.” she smiles, “Try it with me.”

“You sure?”

“Yes!”

Rooster's grin widened at Beatrice's suggestion "Alright, here goes nothing," he said, taking a deep breath to steady himself. "I…” he pauses, “...I…am happy to be promoted to Lieutenant Commander…”

“Go on Roos, you can do it.”

Rooster took another deep breath, his gaze focused as he continued to recite his speech. "I am honored and humbled by the opportunity to serve in this new role," he said, "And I want to thank each and every one of you for your support and guidance along the way. Without your encouragement, I wouldn't be standing here today."

Beatrice listened intently as Rooster spoke, her heart swelling with pride at his words.She just leaned on her hand as she watches him.

"As I look back on my journey," Rooster continued, his voice tinged with nostalgia, "I am reminded of the…challenges and obstacles that I've faced. But with every setback, I've emerged stronger and more determined than ever to succeed."

Beatrice smiled, feeling a surge of admiration for Rooster's resilience. She knew firsthand the trials and tribulations he had endured to reach this point, and she couldn't help but feel a sense of pride.

"And so, as I embark on this new chapter in my career," Rooster said, his tone filled with determination, "I promise to uphold the values of integrity, honor, and service that have guided me thus far. I will lead by example, always putting the needs of others above my own, and striving to make a positive impact on the world around me."

"Finally," Rooster said, his voice filled with gratitude, "I want to thank my family for their love and support. My wife,Beatrice, you are my rock, my inspiration, and my greatest source of strength. I wouldn't be where I am today without you by my side, and I am eternally grateful for your support."

Tears welled up in Beatrice's eyes as she listened to Rooster's heartfelt words, her heart overflowing with love for her husband. She reached out, squeezing his hand tightly as she whispered, "Oh wow."

“Good?”

“It’s great.” she sniffles, “You made me cry.”

“...I think I’ll change a few things though.”

Beatrice chuckled through her tears, "You always find a way to make me cry," she admitted, her voice filled with affection.

Rooster grinned sheepishly, his cheeks flushing "Sorry about that," he said, his tone apologetic. "I didn’t mean to."

Touched by Rooster's words, Beatrice leaned in, pressing a tender kiss to his lips. "I love you, Roos," she murmured against his lips, her voice filled with warmth.

"I love you too, gorgeous," Rooster replied, his gaze softening as he met Beatrice's eyes. "Now, let's go back home. I'm starving." he stands up and holds out his hand to her, “Shall we?”

The evening air was cool against their skin as they stepped outside, the soft glow of streetlights casting long shadows across the sidewalk. Beatrice breathed in deeply, savoring the crisp night air as she leaned into Rooster's side.

"You will do amazing, Roos," she said softly, her voice filled with admiration. "I'm so proud of you."

Rooster smiled down at her, his eyes shining with happiness. "Thanks, gorgeous," he replied, his voice warm. "I’ll try, you know."

“You’ll do great.” she whispers, “...come on, let’s go home. We gotta prepare for Saturday and the kids need us at home, i'm sure my parents are…a bit tired by now.”

As they approached the car, Rooster pressed the key fob to unlock the doors, and they both climbed inside. The interior of the car was warm and inviting, a welcome respite from the cool evening air.

Rooster started the engine, and they began the journey back home, the soft hum of the car's engine filling the silence between them. Beatrice leaned back in her seat, her mind drifting to thoughts of the weekend ahead.

"I can't believe Shell's getting married," Beatrice mused aloud, breaking the silence, suddenly remembering the information. "It feels like just yesterday we were all in college, dreaming about the future."

Rooster nodded in agreement, his gaze focused on the road ahead. "Yeah, time really flies," he replied, "But I'm happy for her. She's found someone who makes her happy, and that's all that matters."

Beatrice smiled, her heart swelling with affection for her friend. "Yeah, she deserves all the happiness in the world," she agreed, her voice filled with warmth. "And it’ll be fun too.” she hums, sinking in the Bronco’s soft seats, “...god I really love this car.”

“Yeah?”

“Yeah…every time I see it I just remember you so,” she smiles, “...im kinda sleepy.”

“I noticed gorgeous.”

“M not makin’ sense…”

“It’s okay beautiful.” he smiles, “You can nap as we go home…sounds good?” and much like the first time he noticed he fell in love with her…she was out like a light, head tilted to the door and brown hair falling over her shoulders “...damn pretty girl.” he smiles, ‘You just got me so good.”
