Either we need to revive Imagine Software's meaning for "megagame" or we need to adopt a simple system I have just invented where each "A" represents another studio or publisher that the game passed through before being released, so Duke Nukem Forever is about a AAA-AAAA game, because what was it? 3d realms with apogee as the original prospective publisher, to gearbox who brought it to compleation with 2k as publisher. Meanwhile undertale is a single A-AA game depending on how you count the 8-4 japanese localisation, and Brataccas would be a AA-AAA game because it started under Imagine Software before they folded, worked its way over to Psygnosis and then was published in north america by Mindscape.

This would also solve a lot of the "what is an indie?" arguments too

an AAAAA game can't just be "game we put a lot of money into", that's not enough to kick it into the next bracket. the development needs to be on the level of medieval cathedrals: spanning multiple generations and involving hundreds of accidental deaths

the horrible foreskin monsters in Slitterhead look so good - and they're so much a good version of the "we've got silent hill at home" style of psychosexual videosgame monster that it then sets up the audience to be surprised when it then presents a boss with what I can only describe as a tim burton-esque monster design, complete with stop motion animation style jerkiness, and& look far more GENUINELY unreal and strange in the grimy setting than the foreskin monsters do.

From "oh is that a floppydoppy?" to "what the actual fuck am I even looking at!?", creates a real neat effect - a lot of horror games need to make use of the the ability to shift styles more, having things that look genuinely "out of place" is a whole other way to unsettle the player that can be used really well if done with intent and purpose

also helps a fuck ton that Akira Yamaoka seems to be doing good music again - after silent hill 4 he kinda got stuck as "the guy who makes silent hill music" so most of his work has been him doing SH3 style stuff (his work on Shadows of the Damned felt kinda sad in that sense as he was practically just doing remixes of maybe 1 or 2 tracks from sh3 over and over), so it's cool he's able to do something else for a change - just great hearing a good artist play around again

I think it's funny how discussion around Mouthwashing was fine for like 2 days (ignoring Anya's character for some mid toxic yaoi is ☠️) and then everyone just decided to be dumb again and have black and white views in everything and on what someone can and can't write.

There's nothing wrong with Curly/Jimmy or Anya/Curly and you would know that if you didn't see it as shipping, but as an exploration of dynamics. In a "happy" ending wether Anya has a miscarriage or keeps the baby it would still inflict trauma upon her. What would her feelings be about having an abuser's baby? And what about her feelings towards Curly after that? these are interesting scenarios to explore but apparently that can never be explored for.. some reason???. Curly would still be disabled and suffer the consequences of not noticing Jimmy was rotten as a person, this isnt a happy ending where everyone is fine and doesn't suffer from their actions.

And don't get me started on the mischaracterization happening around Curly bc there's no way I saw multiple people saying he ignored Anya on purpose and even consider him on the same level or even worse than Jimmy! He truly does care about Anya, but his inaction fails to save her and ends up siding with her rapist implicitly. He's an enabler but not the way y'all think! 😭

Discussion around topics like abuse and trauma are just impossible to have because every single time people can't help but project onto characters instead of treating them as their own. Jimmy is not your abuser, Curly isn't your enabler and Anya isn't you. Take the fandom goggles off for 5 seconds please.

There's a game about being a stealthy little goblin creature called Styx where the devs left a weird debug room outside the usual bounds of a few levels level but close enough some are reachable if you clip out of a wall and then climb and jump around the invisible backside of bits of level geometry, so the speedruns are accidental platforming challenges around invisible OOB geometry to reach these platforms and skip the level to it's final state and then climbing back out of OOB to the level exit.

And adding a combination of the spelunky ghost and the one NPC from Minit who....talks... so.... slowly... that... the... timer....that... makes... the... world... reset...runs... out... right... after... he... finally... tells... you... a... passcode...so... one... loop... of... gameplay... is... always... just... clicking.... through... his... text... boxes...

Well combine all those on purpose into a game would be hilarious, especially if the speedrunner can't go into the menu and restart while the ghost is talking to them and it doesn't matter how bad the normal way to play your game is people will be climbing over each other to declare the "speedrunner mode" a hilarious subversion of videosgame expectations

Implementing strict out-of-bounds checking in my 3D platformer, but instead of actually forbidding the player from going out of bounds I just use it to create a demon that chases you around the OOB space, and if it catches you it engages you in a lengthy unskippable dialogue about the tabletop RPG it's writing, thereby killing your speedrun.

actually i like the game having an intricate scoring system that i have to really know to master i like the game having all sorts of small interactions to know in order to maximize i like when the game rewards you with more stuff if you're dedicated enough i like when fucking up is a genuine threat to your game but risking things going wrong can have massive payoffs i like challenge and depth

idk you are 16 years old and you care about someone you care about him so much it hurts and he has to die. and it’s not like you actually have to kill him yourself, exactly, but you have to see it coming and you have to do nothing about it. again. you have to do nothing about it again. but there’s another option, is the thing, there’s another choice where everyone lives and everything is happy and he doesn’t have to die. sure it goes against everything you stand for, but in a perfect world you wouldn’t need to stand for anything. you know you’ve already decided that it’s the wrong choice but you are sixteen years old and you would never need to worry about making a wrong choice again and you care about someone you care about him so much it hurts.
