the thing that gets me about possession horror is that it's very often used an excuse to justify inflicting some seriously aggressive and violating measures on a person in order to "exorcise" them of the malevolent influence puppeteering their body, if with the frankly nauseating consolation that the people doing so feel miserably guilty about it, but oh-so-selflessly push through their discomfort to continue hurting the person they claim to love "for their own good". which i guess is fine and all, given that entities that can literally invade and manipulate your body and mind like a marionette are only a problem in real life for bugs (cordyceps), and fiction can be a valuable tool for exploring ideas that would be impossible and/or unethical to recreate in reality, but it'd be nice if more people were willing to consider just how closely a lot of "possession horror" mirrors the very real forced institutionalisation and incarceration of people with already highly stigmatised mental health issues and maladaptive defence mechanisms developed in response to trauma. and that maybe trying to beat/starve/cut/otherwise torture the "demon" out of someone by punishing their body until they succeed in performing to your standards for socially acceptable behaviour only serves to push them further towards responding with hostility and/or self-destruction as a defence mechanism rather than the fulfilment of any kind of fantastical saviour narrative. like if a person runs into the arms of someone who just beat them within an inch of their life and thanks them for their help, i think we can all agree that's not a sign of anything good.

in order to unlearn racism u have to be willing to accept that u are racist. it’s not a bad thing to want to change for the better. it’s not a bad thing to say hey, the way i’ve been acting is racist and i don’t want to be racist anymore. when people of color are telling u ways in which u have been racist, it’s actually not cool to brush it off and say, well i didn’t mean it that way.. u actually have to make an effort to stop doing those things if u want to be able to actually say ur anti-racist. u can’t just say ur not racist because u don’t wanna be seen as racist. that’s not how unlearning racism works.
