what do you think about the comparisons between sansa and elizabeth i?
Traumatizing 😂 Actually, Sansa having a cult of personality in the North with a goddess like depiction in songs, well, it's what she deserves so I guess I shouldn't be too down about it!
Tumblr media
It has merit. The LF and Thomas Seymour parallel alone feels like enough to argue Martin was influenced by her life when writing Sansa's story. But the important thing is what is says about Sansa's endgame and this was written all the way back in 2012:
Disregarded as a daughter, and later marked as the daughter of a traitor (Anne Boleyn), Elizabeth was raised to be a highborn lady. After the death of her father, brother, and the execution of Lady Jane Grey, Elizabeth was held hostage by her mentally ill sister (Bloody) Mary for almost a year before Mary's death, putting Elizabeth on the throne. In government, Elizabeth was much more moderate than the previous Tudor monarchs had been. Her personal motto was, interestingly enough, "video et taceo" which roughly translates to “I see, and say nothing.” (much more--follow the link)
However, many people have made similar cases for Elizabeth of York being the inspo, especially because Martin has mentioned being influenced by the War of the Roses. I found this post from 2013 discussing it:
Sansa and Elizabeth resembled each other and their lives took somewhat parallel courses. Both bounced around various diplomatic marriage proposals. Both wanted to be queens. And, both married or almost married their uncles... (much more--follow the link)
@minitafan wrote about some similarities with Elizabeth of York for me once, and this part of a meta she wrote on it is particularly notable
This I think is a parallel GRRM took straight from the history books: Elizabeth’s young brothers were in line for the throne before her, but they “disappeared” presumably, were killed. To this day historians debate who exactly was the murderer, but for decades after that, several young men claimed to be either Edward or his younger brother, true heirs to the Throne. The story was they have been swapped for peasant boys by York loyalists, and the peasant boys had been murdered in their place. This is very similar to the story of Bran and Rickon being “swapped”. (link)
@trinuviel commented on the parallels:
GRRM has praised Sharon K. Penman’s novel Sunne in Splendour about the Wars of the Roses and it is quite obvious that it has been a big inspiration for his series, especially the first book. (link)
And @kitten1618x wrote a meta about all the parallels between ASOIAF and the War of the Roses, some of which are rather striking:
Amidst the War a King is Born [...] Edmund, a Lancastrian, was taken prisoner by Yorkist forces mere months after his marriage to Margaret, and died in captivity less than a year later, leaving behind a 13-year-old widow who was seven months pregnant with their child -whom she birthed at the tender age of 14. This sounds vaguely familiar -like a lovable bastard prince we know, who’s mother birthed him at a tender age, his father dying in a “rebellion” of sorts -War of the Roses/Roberts Rebellion. (much more--follow the link)
I think there are enough parallels to conclude both of the women were on Martin's mind, and seeing how he translates an influence into his own work is really interesting. Depending on how you foresee Sansa's ending, becoming queen in her own right a la Elizabeth I or marrying Jon as a kind of resolution to the Targ v Stark issues, and more pressingly, the Northern succession, for the Elizabeth of York parallel, one carries a lot more significance. I dislike the possibility of Sansa getting thrown at different guys for other people's purposes, being forced to marry, lusted after and molested by several adult men, without ever having a mutual love interest, so I can't really celebrate the Queen Elizabeth I parallels too much, although it’s nice they exist for QitN purposes.

Sansa’s stans try to compare Sansa to Elizabeth I because Elizabeth taught herself by observing the world around her. Her motto was Video et Taceo (“I see and say nothing”).
Some of her decisions made early in her reign seem to be reactions to her siblings’ or father’s rule: Mary and Edward’s religious fanaticism had caused discord so Elizabeth favoured the middle road, Henry’s marriages had caused strife abroad and Mary’s had caused strife internally so Elizabeth decided against marrying to limit foreign influence, the obsession with naming an heir early in Edward and Mary’s reign had resulted in uprisings surrounding those heirs so Elizabeth steadfastly refused to publicly name an heir all the way to her deathbed, the clipping of coins in Henry and Edward’s reign had ruined the English economy and so Elizabeth implemented economic reform and essentially created the pound sterling (the basis of which were begun in Mary’s reign). It seems she carefully observed what was going on in the political world, makings mental notes on what decisions were successful and which ones brought disaster and then used that to learn how to rule effectively.
But the thing is, Sansa isn’t learning. She keep repeating the same mistakes over and over again. She trusts Joffrey and Cersei and then Dontos Hollard and then the Tyrells and now Myranda and Petyr. Sansa is getting played by Myranda’s words into confirming she’s a Stark, (“Oh, and the Night’s Watch has a boy commander, some bastard son of Eddard Stark’s”, “Jon Snow?” she blurted out, surprised.) How would Petyr’s bastard knows who Jon Snow is ???And what’s funny is she comes to trust Myranda and sees her as a friend on par with Jeyne Poole so it’s something serious and she even recognizes that Myranda likes Harry but she genuinely doesn’t think her impending marriage to him is something that’ll make Myranda turn into the Joker. And Myranda has asked her about Petyr’s dick, like Myranda would not ask her that if she genuinely thought Petyr was her father. Sansa blushes but never stops to ask herself why Myranda would say that to her, anyone would’ve been like why are you asking such questions ?? I don’t know why her stans say Sansa is learning how to rule and knows political intrigue because if she did she’d have immediately understood that Myranda is suspicious. Sansa is NOT meant to rule and that’s OK!
Hello @daenerysne !
So I think this is in response to my response to @ozymalek 's ask a couple of weeks ago, which can be found here.
Exactly. Sansa might be there in the midst of all this political intrigue but she's not absorbing much of it yet. She is more aware about being more wary of people, but her judgement is way off on who exactly she can trust. She thinks she can trust Baelish (I say this because she differentiates between Littlefinger and Petyr on who she can trust or not) but she's wrong, and almost everyone she has ever thought she could trust outside of her family has not been trustworthy to some extent. And the ones she could trust aren't around anymore like Sandor. And her blindness to Myranda just kind of blows my mind, because LF warned her about Myranda. And it's really clear in Sansa's TWOW sample chapter that Myranda was trying to sabotage Sansa with that race they had. Myranda was hoping Sansa would look a mess when she met Harry the Heir. But the thing with Sansa is that she can be flat out told something, told a lot of things, but she never examines anything critically. I mean just look at the things Sansa knows. She knows LF got the Tyrells to poison Joffrey, she knows that LF convinced Lysa to poison Jon Arryn, LF told her point blank that he doesn't get his hands dirty himself, that he has other people doing his dirty work, she knows LF is forcing Sweetrobin to take Sweetsleep, something the Maester is warning her against, but she's pushing for it on behalf of LF, and then she learns that LF plans for Sansa to marry Harry the Heir and be Lady of the Eyrie, and he tells her Sweetrobin will die, yet she doesn't put any of this together? That LF is using her to do his dirty business and that if shit hits the fan he might blame her? Like she doesn't even contemplate any of this. Sansa is wilfully ignorant, forcibly blind to everything that disrupts her daydream worldview of fairy tales and romantic songs and valiant knights at the moment it seems, and I feel like this has just gotten worse since she left KL.
So yes, this is a far cry to Elizabeth I's observational skills and political accumum. And perhaps I would give Sansa the benefit of the doubt if this series was going to be longer than 7 books and if we didn't just see Sansa's willful ignorance get even worse in her sample chapter in book 6/7. Not to mention, Sansa has no leadership qualities or skills at this point in the books either. She's not a leader but a follower. So how does this translate to her becoming an endgame Queen REGNANT and someone equal to Queen Elizabeth I? It doesn't. Sansa is a lady, not a ruling queen. Perhaps one day she could be a ruling lady of a castle, but unless Sansa has major character and political growth in TWOW, that also culminates in her gaining her own autonomy and becoming more proactive and more of a critical thinker, I doubt she would be ruling lady of a castle at the end of the series unless there is a epilogue that spans years. Don't get me wrong, I really, really hope Sansa gets some amazing growth in the next two books, but considering there are only 2 books left and a ton of other characters and plots, I'm not sure that type of growth will happen. Also there is nothing wrong with Sansa's story if she doesn't become some ruling lady or a queen regnant. Sansa has never expressed wanting to be either of those things. Sansa wanting to becoming queen consort in AGOT is not the same as wanting to be queen regnant, and truthfully I think Sansa would be the type of character who wouldn't want to do something "a man is supposed to do" considering she's good with the status quo. I think the most important ending for Sansa is one where she is finally safe and relatively content and/or happy, and what makes Sansa happy is planning and attending splendid events like tourney's and feasts, and what she wants the most is to marry for love and have her own family. I don't understand why so many of her fans don't want this too, but then again these people think Sansa is in some kind of competition with Arya and Dany. *rolls eyes* They seem to think that Sansa has to win it all and become the main female character, but just because she's not going to become a ruler in the end doesn't mean her entire story and character is pointless and it won't be.
But it's like I said in the link, Sansa and Elizabeth I do share some parallels, but none of those parallels have anything to do with queendom or being a good ruler or even politics. When it comes to personality, they are absolutely nothing alike, in fact I think Sansa would disdain Elizabeth for not being passive and for ruling "like a man" and for refusing to marry and have an heir. And when it comes to education and intelligence and political accumum Elizabeth outstrips Sansa by miles and miles. Elizabeth I was pretty much a damn genius and knew how to employ the common touch. She was beloved by her people for listening and mingling with her subjects, lowborn and highborn alike. I can't think of anything Sansa would hate more than doing this. As I mentioned in the link, if anything Elizabeth's personality and political skills and intelligence is more on par with Dany and Arya if we are strictly speaking of main female POV characters, and not Sansa, at least not book canon Sansa. But then again, these people believe that their made up fanon versions of Sansa are the real deal. And since I know what they believe fanon Sansa is, my only guess is that if they think fanon Sansa is anything like Elizabeth I, then they really don't know anything about Queen Elizabeth I.

Yes! I see so much blame out there on d&d and some of it’s warranted, but it’s not exactly easy to adapt an unfinished series with main characters who are never at the same place at the same time. There are way too many worlds and characters and storylines that don’t even go anywhere.
Yeah, I mean, their writing isn’t the greatest even at the best times. That said, I personally really doubt that they ever foresaw being in this situation, having nothing to adapt except notes/ideas.
It’s sort of hilarious to me that I’m taking up for the show-runners, because I’ve seen many a terrible adaptation of works I love. I know all too well the pain of seeing adaptations by people who (at least partially) misinterpret or misrepresent many of the themes of a work [coughPeterJacksoncough] or who twist characters into people whose personalities and actions are unrecognizable to readers [ahemBryanFullerhemhem]. But in this case, I think it’s a little different than your typical bad adaptation since GRRM has the privilege of being an executive producer, which is a rare role (as I understand it) for the author of an adapted work, and since he hasn’t gotten round to finishing. So how angry can I really be at D&D, etc., for their failings? This isn’t their story; like you said, it doesn’t surprise me that without any material, they kind of suck at writing...new material.
I feel for fans who think GOT is a bad adaptation, I really do. I feel the same way about the LOTR movies (and I’ve been told that I’m objectively wrong about that idk how many times since the age of 10, haha). At the same time...I think this is a unique situation in which the author bears a lot of responsibility for that.
I’m honestly shocked that an author would let a screen adaptation finish the story before they themselves have written it!
Same. I do feel kind of bad if GRRM just got stuck. I’m sure it happens. I’ve never written an epic fantasy series, so idk. But from what I’ve read, he has no one but himself to blame. He (apparently) doesn’t sit down and work on his writing every day like a “job.”  He doesn’t use outlines (he says) or set the framework of his books ahead of time--he’s just “a gardener.” I think the fact that this story was supposed to be a trilogy says all you need to know in that regard.
Re: your comment on storylines/characters, I’ve actually seen an analysis that concluded he literally cannot fit all the new POV characters/subplots into one volume (i.e., there’s a certain page length past which publishers will not issue a novel as a single book), which might be part of the reason he’s struggling. World-building is great, it’s a huge reason many people read fantasy--but I think it got out of hand for GRRM, who doesn’t seem to be able to focus on a tight story within the world he’s building while fleshing it out separately in novellas, appendixes, anthologies, etc. (in the way, say, Tolkien did). Judging only by videos I’ve watched and meta I’ve read, he seems to be trying instead to include ~75% of the ideas he’s had for Westeros & its history and culture in the main book series. And as a result it seems ASOIAF has become bloated, unfocused, and has “lost the plot” so to speak.
tl;dr these lyrics from “Write Like the Wind (George R. R. Martin)”* sum it up for me
Lewis took five years to chronicle Narnia; Tolkien had twelve years, and Rowling took ten... You’re not our bitch, and you’re not a machine, And we don’t mean to dictate how you spend your days, But please bear in mind: in the time that you’ve had, William Shakespeare churned out thirty-five friggin’ plays!
*a song that was uploaded in 2012

[left: detail of Elizabeth I from The Armada Portrait, right: recreation of what Elizabeth I probably looked like, based on her death mask]
Elizabeth I (7 September 1533 – 24 March 1603) was Queen of England and Ireland from 17 November 1558 until her death in 1603. Sometimes called the Virgin Queen, Gloriana or Good Queen Bess, Elizabeth was the last of the five monarchs of the House of Tudor.
Elizabeth was the daughter of Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn, his second wife, who was executed two-and-a-half years after Elizabeth's birth. Anne's marriage to Henry VIII was annulled, and Elizabeth was declared illegitimate. Her half-brother, Edward VI, ruled until his death in 1553, bequeathing the crown to Lady Jane Grey and ignoring the claims of his two half-sisters, the Roman Catholic Mary and the younger Elizabeth, in spite of statute law to the contrary. Edward's will was set aside and Mary became queen, deposing Lady Jane Grey. During Mary's reign, Elizabeth was imprisoned for nearly a year on suspicion of supporting Protestant rebels.
Upon her half-sister's death in 1558, Elizabeth succeeded to the throne and set out to rule by good counsel. She depended heavily on a group of trusted advisers, led by William Cecil, 1st Baron Burghley. One of her first actions as queen was the establishment of an English Protestant church, of which she became the supreme governor. This Elizabethan Religious Settlement was to evolve into the Church of England. It was expected that Elizabeth would marry and produce an heir; however, despite numerous courtships, she never did. She was eventually succeeded by her first-cousin twice-removed, James VI of Scotland, laying the foundation for the Kingdom of Great Britain. She had earlier been responsible for the imprisonment and execution of James's mother, Mary, Queen of Scots.
In government, Elizabeth was more moderate than her father and half-siblings had been. One of her mottoes was "video et taceo" ("I see and keep silent"). In religion, she was relatively tolerant and avoided systematic persecution. After the pope declared her illegitimate in 1570 and released her subjects from obedience to her, several conspiracies threatened her life, all of which were defeated with the help of her ministers' secret service. Elizabeth was cautious in foreign affairs, manoeuvring between the major powers of France and Spain. She only half-heartedly supported a number of ineffective, poorly resourced military campaigns in the Netherlands, France, and Ireland. By the mid-1580s, England could no longer avoid war with Spain. England's victory against the Spanish Armada in 1588 associated Elizabeth with one of the greatest military victories in English history.
As she grew older, Elizabeth became celebrated for her virginity. A cult of personality grew around her which was celebrated in the portraits, pageants, and literature of the day. Elizabeth's reign became known as the Elizabethan era. The period is famous for the flourishing of English drama, led by playwrights such as William Shakespeare and Christopher Marlowe, and for the seafaring prowess of English adventurers such as Francis Drake. Some historians depict Elizabeth as a short-tempered, sometimes indecisive ruler, who enjoyed more than her share of luck. Towards the end of her reign, a series of economic and military problems weakened her popularity. Elizabeth is acknowledged as a charismatic performer and a dogged survivor in an era when government was ramshackle and limited, and when monarchs in neighbouring countries faced internal problems that jeopardised their thrones. After the short reigns of her half-siblings, her 44 years on the throne provided welcome stability for the kingdom and helped forge a sense of national identity.

I'll state from the beginning that the images below display the sort of sweet synchronicity to which only love can give life:
Tumblr media
MaAndPaShipping is the best ship, and here are five reasons why:
Tumblr media
1. It Made James
Like the boy do yer? Ever felt the slightest tingle of warmth at the mention of his name?
Well get down on yer knees and give thanks to his mother and father for gifting him to the world!
Where would we be without their remarkable commitment? Could James have grown into the dandified dream boat of your desires if deprived of the safety provided by his parents?
Had they not brought him up, he'd be dead, The Dog of Flanders fantasy made reality. If miraculously he survived, foraging in the wild is not conducive to a foppish personality.
Is that to yer fancy? No? Then let's have a little respect. The luxury Ma and Pa gave enabled his macaroni tendencies to reach such heights.
Their love created him! How can it not be celebrated?
You lot would ship Jessie's parents but you can't, because she has no dad, and I don't suppose you'll ever assent to his obvious identity of Windy Miller, although 'Jessie Miller' has a wonderful ring to it, so what can be done?
Should a Pa Jess be conjured for the purpose, he still buggered off, didn't he? Where's the allure in a faithless git?
I can't comprehend the obsession with Ma Jess. As soon as here she's stiff, and what is there to remember but coercing her daughter into eating snow?
Hey, I named her. What more do you want from me?
I'd rather have the living, visible ancestors, if you don't mind.
Yeah, says the history fanatic.
Why not make the most of the chances offered, and follow a devoted couple whose love made a difference to your existence?
Tumblr media
2. Canon!
There are many ships which I find repulsive for involving depravity, or absurd as the subjects haven't met, or don't inhabit the same fictional universe.
Video et taceo: I see and I say nothing.
Neither does anyone. Forcing decent folk in to incest, bestiality etc. is quite alright.
Perverted ideas are left alone, but woe betide a Rocketshipper, because that's offensive.
It may be the only original ship left standing, with proper evidence and sanctioned by Nintendo, but no, it's fair game for undermining. People pick at your arguments, quibble constantly and NEED to register their objections NOW. You MUST be made aware of opposition. You're not to be permitted your views the way those with twisted tastes are indulged.
Why, out of tens of thousands of combinations, does making Jessie and James an item provoke hostility?
The strength of negativity actually serves as validation, for why be so concerned if it's an impossible relationship?
However sick they are, I'm not anti any ship. I can't muster sufficient interest to do it, and if I scroll on, I forget. I certainly don't attack those responsible.
Anti-Shipping is inherently nihilistic for promoting loneliness. They aren't against Rocketshipping through wanting Jessie and James to be with someone else, as an alternative is not readily available, so the outcome of it is neither finding a companion.
MaAndPaShipping attracts no sourpuss silliness, for 'tis canon beyond question. There's nothing about being 'just friends' when married with a son.
How's the state of your O.T.P.? Not looking too clever I expect, and what's your contribution: wishing, and hoping, and thinking, and praying?
Cast it off! None of that longing is necessary in these quarters, as MaAndPaShipping is a fait accompli.
Hallelujah! Wallow in that Love!
Don't you yearn for at least one ship that all of us accept by default, to the extent these aristocrats are spoken of as a single unit?
Across the internet, Ma and Pa are bracketed as 'James's parents', never 'he' and 'she', always 'they', barely counting as distinct characters. That's how undeniable the love is between them. Sheer indifference has awarded it a blessing from everyone.
MWAH-HA-HA-HA-HA!!!
Of course, now I've drawn attention to it the moaning will start, but we all know a spoilsport when we see one.
If they had any legitimate complaints they ought to have mentioned 'em before this piece highlighted the marriage!
Except it won't have occurred to 'em previously, proving the eternal, indissoluble quality of MaAndPaShipping.
You get good value with this one.
Find a post referring to Ma and Pa as individuals and I'll have written it, for that's what you call ironic.
Tumblr media
3. It's a Fine Rocketshipping Proxy
I was at primary school when Pokémon hit the West like the bright, bearded meteor it is, atomizing all competition for a child's attention.
I have shipped Jessie and James before I knew anyone else did it, unaware shipping was even a thing.
There are other pairs where I think: 'That seems to fit', but it's incomparable to what I feel for them.
It is part of me. I bleed it.
I have shipped it longer than most Tumblerries have dwelt upon the earth.
I used to believe, what with the hints and manga finale, that this resolution was  inevitable, and all I had to do was wait.
Well I've been patient for two decades now, thus when I look at the modern incarnation, and realise it's no nearer to that goal, and instead is further away, waiting starts to wear a bit thin.
I resent the lack of appreciation shown to the fans by the cretins in charge, how any meagre shippy inclusion is done not with an interest in deepening bonds, but with the blatant cynicism of moulding us into performing monkeys dancing to their manipulative tune.
I dislike being treated like a sea lion, expected to clap me flippers at the wave of a fish, or as a panting dog begging at top table, where, because they're desperate to maintain the status quo, every scrap flung down from above now comes with an Anti-Ship kick in the teeth, just to be sure nothing progresses. Not whilst the franchise can still be milked for all it's worth.
I have lost faith Rocketshipping will happen. What passes for Pokémon today carries not the remotest indication of any intention on the so-called writers' part to finish it that way.
Even if it did, it's not my Team Rocket, it's those skeletal, gargoyle bastardisations. My Jessie and James never got the reward they deserved.
I'm somewhat in the market for a replacement. Beneath this loathsome carapace of acid and ice beats the tender heart of a true romantic, and it must have an outlet!
Shipping Ma and Pa provides a certain spurious relief, because it's as close as you can get to Jessie and James without it being them, both biologically as his parents, but they're so similar to the duo it counts as proof in itself.
Holy Matrimony! is prime Rocketshipping territory, not merely the balloon lift, but many slight additions are as important, like the haircuts matching.
Ma and Pa are therefore Jessie and James in the past, present and future:
The past for representing Jess 'n' Jamie gone Victorian, and we've all wondered how that'd turn out.
The present as it's there right now, absent of suffering the shameless whims of morons to get what you want. 'Tis yours to savour.
The future as a glimpse of Jessie and James once married with children, and they agree:
Tumblr media
That's how they play it given the opportunity!
What, James in blue, for his and Pa's hair, and Jessie wearing purple, like Ma's, with a red shawl for her own, and Ma Jess's orange earrings to copy the beads?
• Money!
• Bun!
• 'Tache!
• Classy pad!
• Fancy gear!
• Pampered pet!
• Identical cups of Earl Grey!
Tumblr media
4. Original Blend
Ma and Pa have only got two fans! We care more than the entire fandom has in twenty years!
Rocketshipping art is ten a penny, so why not display a pioneering spirit, sharpen up those pencils and be inspired?
Let your mind expand and marvel at the possibilities of these unchartered territories, and I'll reblog it if it's nice.
Pay attention to the condition of it being nice. I'm not putting up with any old toss.
Real Ma and Pa is what I want too, not those Sinnoh coffin-dodgers.
It's never been done! Every drawing breaks new ground!
I don't like fan fiction, but I wouldn't say 'no' to that either. Recall the 'nice' stipulation again.
Come on, be the first amongst your friends and get ship shape!

5. It Gives Us All Hope
Suppose your favourite amour one day became canon: you imagine that's the end of the matter?
Well it ain't.
Between Ash, Misty, Brock, Jessie, James, Gary and Tracey, there are three-and-a-half out of fourteen parents (Flint doesn't count as a complete man) and one out of twenty-eight grandparents, and that's not enough!
If the series drew to a close with your beloved couple apparently walking into the happily-ever-after, there's no guarantee it'll endure. In fact, the odds are they'll split up within a few years and leave another generation to fend for themselves or starve.
That's right, so don't presume the final episode is all you need to worry about. Can you rest easy knowing it'll go pear-shaped once the camera stops rolling?
It's futile soothing one's worries with:
Oh, but they know what it's like to be alone. They'd never inflict such stress on their children.
Oh really?
Look at that poor showing of grandparents. Either Pokémon has a system reminiscent of the sci-fi film Logan's Run, where everyone over thirty is vapourized, or these disappearing maters and paters were themselves victims of abandonment.
I bet when they settled down, they thought it'd be different for their kids, they'd make sure of it, but no, off they went down that same route of feckless self-indulgence, and that's being kind assuming they intended not to repeat history.
Depressing eh? What's the good in any of us surrendering to romance, real or otherwise, if love is but a mayfly of emotion, and all dreams are doomed to die?
Then Ma and Pa arrive, and suddenly the storm clouds part for a ray of heavenly light.
It's not only that they made the effort in what was probably an arranged marriage and have stayed together from youth, it's that they've stayed together when no one else has, which augments its value.
When separation is commonplace, sticking it out becomes rarer and rarer as any belief in the sanctity of wedlock erodes with every failure.
If they didn't bother, why should I? What's the use when it won't work?
Once that idea enters your head, it's over, and your gloom-laden attitude fulfils itself.
Society is collapsing about Ma and Pa's ears, but they persevere nevertheless, refusing to buckle under the turgid malaise engulfing the arrogant and weak.
It's bloody beautiful, man!
You may suggest an environment of supreme wealth erases normality, and to their class and time period divorce is still taboo, so they don't really have much of choice but to remain wedded.
Ah, but it's not as if they simply tolerate one another for appearances, or carried on for the sake of their son (which is more than anyone else did besides), not when he walked out on them.
They've been married longer than James has lived, so at least eighteen years (don't all squeal at once), and they're still blissfully contented!
They hold hands!
They use terms of endearment like 'dear' and 'my precious'!
They were made for one another!
They work as a team!
They want the same thing for James!
It could bring a stone angel to tears it's so beautiful!
See what success can be achieved when you try? When you endeavour to love the one you're with and make yourself worth loving in return?
Better that than chucking 'em at the first sign of trouble.
Ma and Pa is such an irrevocable union even the despair of losing their only child failed to tear 'em asunder, and that'd defeat many, but not this husband and wife.
Be grateful, for it means all is not in vain.
It doesn't have to be misery and pain: love can last despite the pressure of a wretched, hollow culture bent on self-destruction. Your ship might just succeed too.
God bless 'em for keeping the magic alive!
...
Why do I have the presentiment that I'm going to regret encouraging support?

video-et-taceo replied to your post: Okay, I came across this absolutely awful...
TVQ’s Lettice is a pretty terrible version of her so I’m not really surprised that she would say that. And sadly, based on popular history, I’m not surprised this is the narrative that, if she did any outside research, she would find. I’m sure there was more to Lettice than her looks too but…eh…🤷‍♀️. One of the biggest missing pieces is that Lettice was a Knollys. It’s kind of important when it comes to their relationship. Also the fact that Elizabeth wasn’t ugly…but that’s asking a lot.
@video-et-taceo Oh no, the actress was pretty much aware of their connection, she even said that Lettice was close to Elizabeth. It was her claims that Elizabeth mistreated Lettice before the marriage to Robert without evidence whatsoever, based only on the assumption that Elizabeth must have felt jealous of Lettice’s beauty, that made my eyes roll, heh. Because there were other women at court who were reported to be beautiful, who were Elizabeth’s friends and whom she treated kindly.

It was hard since for some of the shows I want to include, there aren’t any or enough gifs that show up to choose from!  There’s one in particular that I’m not happy with the gif for it, but it was the only gif that came up for it so it wasn’t much of a choice. 😕
Tagging @fernweh-wanderlust @dangermousie @almightypeach @theladyelizabeth @video-et-taceo @lilyparmida and anyone who wants to do this.
