Checking my Waterdeep tag, I discovered I have never poster my Davil portrait! So here he is, Davil Starsong, a mastermind behind Doom Raiders, an old-school goldenheart hooligan, and a sleek businessman today.

In my Waterdeep campaign, I made Davil related to Cassalanters. I had too many random unrelated NPCs, so I tied them up this way. See, one of my players is a fourth Cassalanter child, and this makes Davil her granduncle, and an uncle of Victoro Cassalanter, and a son of Caladorn Cassalanter, who was a noble adventurer and became an open lord of Waterdeep back in the day.

When he was young, Davil followed his farther's steps as an adventurer, but got sucked into Zhentarim shenanigans. He made his own gang of Doom Raiders, and stepped out of criminal business when he made enough money to try to legalise his deeds. Victoro Cassalanter avoided adventuring and did banking business for a while. He denies being related to a Zhentarim member.

Today Davil hides his old Zhentarim tattoo (winged snake flying downwards on his neck) behind high collars, helps his little grandniece adventuring and hides her from her cultist family.

I tried painting him as a person who is 550 years old, who seen a lot of shit back in the day, and who pulled himself up by his bootstraps. Family is important to him, and he cares a lot about them, although is denied being a part of Cassalanters' life. He helped out my adventurers a lot, and they now see him as a family as well.

Giving Victoro a new design for a new adventure in the Feywild 8)) He got his ass kicked back to level 1 but is keeping both his Barovia and Waterdeep backstories so it's gonna be an interesting new beginning :)

some item details: Vic carries an inactive Tome of Understanding as a memento of his past and gone 22 WIS (T_T), skulls of his old familiars (one of which was a skull of a dead mage, he hopes to talk to him again when he will regain his Speak with Dead powers, maybe this time ask him his name, cos funny enough, this selfish brat never did it), and a notebook full of unsent letters to his wife who is trapped in a mirror that's locked in a bag that's stashed in the Ninth layer of Hell T_T

Direct Mayhem: Dragon Heist, Chapter 15

aaaaaaaaanybody got a devil we can borrow?

Tariq, the shapeshifter warlock; Sadi, the tabaxi monk; and Carlin, the gnome rogue, are all on a mission to find the remaining two keys needed to open the mysterious Vault of Dragons and recover the stolen half-a-million gold dragon coins!

Except they have no idea where to begin.

The key they’re on the hunt for now is a ‘devil’s claw’ and the only leads they have on devils is the Cassalanters, a noble family in the Sea Ward who Tariq is scared witless of. As they try to formulate a plan, Tariq and Sadi decide to start attuning to their new magical weapons.

This is interrupted by a knock on the door, which turns out to be Dema, the woman who taught Sadi how to fight. Dema says she was in the neighborhood after helping some old friends of hers take down a ‘monster attack’ in the Field Ward, and wanted to stop in and say hi.

The monster attack turns out to be a group of Spined Devils, which of course piqued the party’s interest. They were apparently summoned by a woman who was taken into questioning by the Order of the Gauntlet, a group of fighters dedicated to protected the masses from forces of evil.

After Dema heads back home, the party goes up to the Field Ward to check in on the site of the fight. They don’t find much, except evidence that the fight occurred outside a soup kitchen owned by the Cassalanter family.

The group heads to the home base of the Order of the Gauntlet next, to talk to this prisoner. It takes them a while to convince the order to let them question her, but eventually they do, relying on Tariq’s Charm Person spell after she won’t talk.

She tells them she’s a member of the Cult of Asmodeus, led by the Cassalanters, and that she summoned the Spined Devils in order to help protect the cult’s interests. This is apparently something members of the cult do fairly frequently.

Then they ask her about other members of the cult, and she reveals that the Shields, Sadi’s birth family, are in the cult as well. Sadi flashes back to a time when she was a child, when she saw a symbol of Asmodeus in her parent’s house but didn’t recognize it, and she realizes her parents must have been devil worshippers all this time.

Savra Belabranta, one of the leaders of the Order of the Gauntlet, tells the trio that the Cassalanters can’t be arrested for devil worship. She also has to turn her prisoner over to the City Watch in a few hours, so they don’t have time to have her summon another devil for them to kill.

The party heads to the Blackstaff tower to talk to Vajra, hoping she can direct them to someone else with the ability to summon a devil, but it turns out the Blackstaff isn’t in her office.

It’s starting to look like their only option is to visit the Cassalanters, and try to find one of their summoned devils, or to find another member of this cult to summon a devil for them. Sadi has no desire to see her parents again, so they all agree to stake out the Cassalanter villa. Carlin quickly runs over to Thort’s Findings in the North Ward, where they were that morning, to buy a +1 shortbow, so he isn’t without a magical weapon in this fight.

They watch the Cassalanter villa for a few hours, see Victoro return home in the afternoon, and then get bored. They decide to head home and wait until later that evening, when it’s dark enough to try to break in.

They get almost to their front door when they’re stopped by Vincent Trench, their neighbor detective, who politely asks if they would stop in to help him with a problem. The party agrees and he takes them upstairs, where they find another neighbor, the fire genasi Embric. Embric has ash covering the top half of his face and part of his arms, and he looks angry to see Vincent has asked the trio for help, but Vincent calms him down and promises that everything will make sense in a few moments.

The party then sees Embric’s husband Avi, lying almost dead on the kitchen table, covered in infected-looking scratches and wounds. He has the same ashen makeup as Embric. Tariq tries to heal him to no avail, and everyone realizes he must be infected with something bad.

Carlin and Sadi talk to Embric and he tells them what happened. Apparently he and Avi often go out fighting, to secretly ‘protect’ the people of the city from dangers. They’d heard about something bad nearby and were hunting it down when it almost killed Avi - Embric has no healing abilities, that was Avi’s job, and Vincent found them and hid them in his home.

Some of this rings familiar to Sadi, and she asks him if there’s anything he uses to hide his identity during his vigilante fights - at which point Emrbic pulls out the same red sash Sadi uses when fighting criminals down in the Dock Ward.
