Last December I collaborated with @victoriagranof & @bossgonecrazy in New York on a personal project A Carp in The Tub. With the help of @owen__evans @darkroomdigital_uk this turned into a self published book which is now stocked @thephotographersgallery @magculture @donlonbooks & soon more independent bookshops. This is a dream come true and one of the projects I’m most proud of. Thank you @victoriagranof for sharing your story. Not Natalia’s Borscht. ・・・ “She was poor but that was no excuse. I suspect that even if given free access to high quality ingredients, Natalia’s borscht would still be awful.” ・・・ A Carp in the Tub is an artist collaboration by Food Stylist Victoria Granof, Photographer Louise Hagger and Prop Stylist JoJo Li. In words, pictures and recipes, it tells the weird and wonderful story of  Granof's winter-long journey to adopt her infant son in Ukraine. 
 The work is presented as a set: a folded poster and a booklet. Inside the booklet are a suite of seven photographs with corresponding recipes, and a not funny-but funny essay written by Granof. Wasn’t long before I realized the nurses had been reusing a very few diapers, whilst selling the rest for cash. And doing a brisk business in honey cake”. No matter how American he is now, Feodor Valery (Theo)will always be a Ukrainian, with a heart that is strong and kind and courageous. Right now he is complaining about his homework and not being allowed Coca Cola for dinner but if he was there, I know for sure he would be taking up arms and fighting for his motherland. Repost @victoriagranof 💙💛 There are no hotels in the Ukrainian town of Cherkassy. When I arrived in the winter of 2005 to adopt my son, a very kind nurse from the orphanage moved her family into her mother’s house so I could stay in their krushchyovka - a typical Soviet-era concrete-block apartment. Every few days she would check in on me and put a new batch of bread scraps on the radiator to dry. With these she made kvass, (a fermented drink akin to kombucha) to feed the children. . Theo and I created a fundraiser to help World Central Kitchen @wckitchen feed displaced Ukrainian families at the Polish border. Please give - every little bit helps.
