The photographer @MarioTestino began collecting photography in the early 1980s — and since then, he has amassed a formidable collection of contemporary photography that is unexpectedly subversive given the over-the-top glamour of his own subjects. In next month's #SothebysxTestino, part of his collection will be auctioned online to benefit Museo Mate in Lima, Peru, a nonprofit he established in 2012. Here, one of our favorites of the lot: Vibeke Tandberg’s 2000 work “Jumping Dad (#1 to #9).” The sale runs from Sept. 1-15. Photo courtesy of @Sothebys.

Cotton Chapt. 7- Grace
Joachim Schmid artist from Berlin who has been working with photography since the 1980s. He uses photographs and images to capture moments in history as a way to encapsulate them. I like the photographs of the people from when they are a baby to when they are an adult and pasted them side by side. Vibeke Tandberg is a Norwegian artist and photographer, she is considered one of Norwegians best artists. She tends to be the subject of her photos and manipulates them. Katy Grannan is an American photographer and has made one full-length film. Most of her photos are portraits with stark white backgrounds, making the people in the photos the main focus.

“On the contrary, [Tandberg’s photographs] add the diffuse fear that perhaps we can no longer distinguish between appearance and reality, reality and simulacrum, or original and reproduction.” - Joan Fontcuberta, Pandora’s Camera pg. 97

Chapter 7- Sky
Vibeke Tandberg often manipulates her images digitally to contort human figures and the spaces they occupy. Her images frequently include everyday subjects and her immediate surroundings, such as the artist’s family, her household, friends, holidays, and stages in her life. She takes on her own body as the subject matter of her probing photography and distortion and uses Photoshop to change her physicality or a family member’s clothing to mask her body. Yasumasa Morimura is known for embedding himself into iconic images appropriated from art history, mass media, and popular culture, producing photographs that simultaneously celebrate, satirize, and explore their enduring influence and the stories they convey. Morimura often uses makeup, costuming, and prosthetics to transform himself into the protagonists he portrays. Jemima Stehli is a British feminist artist. This image is the appropriation of Helmut Newton’s ‘Here They Come’. Newton’s original is accurately reproduced, Stehli pose and outfit resemble almost exactly that of the original model, that on the surface Stehli is as objectified as Newton’s original.
