breath comes in ragged pants as she runs through the trees. risking a quick glance back, she sees the creature is no longer following her, but she knows it can't be too far behind. eyes dart around wildly as they try to get their bearings - there's a gate round here somewhere, but in their panic, they can't think where. tears threaten to spill onto her cheeks but she tries to blink them back.

sounds coming from the opposite side of the clearing has her cowering behind one of the rotting trees, waiting for the chilling screech of the demogorgon, but instead she only hears desperate panting. curly head peaks around from their hiding spot to try & see who's there, who else could possibly be wandering around the upside down.

as he walks this hellspace with this little girl no older than lyra, lee can't help the heaviness in his heart. they knew this place like the back of their hand, like the horrors amongst them were nothing they weren't used to. at first he'd tried to make conversation, but she didn't seem like talking, so he'd taken to just humming and singing to himself -- a nervous habit. the hare daemon at his feet didn't bother to sing along, too busy being on high alert like the prey animal she'd settled as.

❝ yes. ❞ she'll find them a way out. & if she can't find one ? she'll make one. they try to clear their head, swallow the panic swelling in them. once they get to the edge of the forest, it takes a moment for el to get their bearings. sure, they know hawkins, but the upside down has a way of making things feel unfamiliar.

nadine is definitely not fully processing this, because they just kind of nod their head in response. it's not that they don't believe el, how couldn't they, but more that this is just a lot at once. seems like the smarter thing to do is just go with it and question it all later. they could make a list, if they really needed to.

"do uh... do you think that we can get out?" nadine asks, words slow because they're actually paying attention to where they're walking for once. it fucking sucks, actually. "like, we can get back, right?" if el knows this place, there has to be a way out. they hope.
