People posting images of extremely computer enhanced practical effect images and saying "see this is why practical effects are so much better than computer effects!" is the exact same energy, to me, as men who say "look how much prettier women look without make-up!" and post a picture of a woman in a fully, heavy face of make up.

can you explain more about jimin's vocals sounding different? i noticed something but i know nothing about singing 😭😭 he said that he had been taking singing classes for 2.5 months tho
Ofc I can explain. I'm not very good at explaining things and I tend to trail off into tangents, so just bear with me for this.
To understand how his vocals have changed, we have to look back on his old vocals and what made them “bad” compared to today. I'm sure youve unfortunately seen the clip all the antis use to drag jimin from the fake love performance with charlie puth. I hate the clip because Jimin seemed super tired and sick, but it is regretfully the best clip to show the difference between then and now. In the clip, he sings his lines, but they’re super shaky and it just doesn't sound good. You can hear that he sounds tired. His vocals lack control and stability and pitch. It’s just not good.
Now this doesn’t mean Jimin was a bad singer. Jimin has never actually been a bad singer, but he did use some techniques that put a lot of strain on his vocals. This on top of bts’s crazy schedules at the time meant Jimin's voice was getting overworked. It led to his voice sounding quite tired at times and fatigue in general, manifesting in sore throats, losing his voice, voice cracks and even getting sick, like the fake love performance. if you wanna kinda feel what i'm describing, just try and belt incredibly high notes for 5 minutes straight very loudly and see how your voice feels after. I mean, you can just yell for 5 minutes straight too. it's exaggerated, but your voice becomes super tired and raspy after it and trying to sing nicely after it is super hard and your voice is super shaky after it.
In the minimoni music episode, jimin mentioned how he needs to learn balance between his new and old techniques and said to sing older songs, he sings forward and up in his head, near his nose. Generally, when belting high notes, you want to aim for the power behind it coming from your diaphragm and your abdomen. Jimin saying that's where he sang makes me think he hit all those bts high notes by tightening his vocal cords to hit high notes. This is not good technique if you want to produce healthy sounds. When you watch him sing you can tell it takes a lot of effort to reach and sustain the note. The high tone he has is beautiful but his producers assumed high tone = the capability to belt high notes.
Jimin's voice sounded best when he would use falsetto and head voice. when he would use chest or mix it could sound a bit shaky and weak. this and his vibrato was inconstant and shaky as well. Sometimes these problems would completely disappear, but that’s not a good thing at the core because it meant he lacked consistency to continue with good technique. These are the main things that I notice a difference in. The key word for Jimin's old technique would be "tight.” If there’s anything i’d want you to focus on it’s listening to how high and tight jimin’s vocals used to sound. They sounded thin. It lacked the depth it needed to thrive.
So what’s the difference now? Well if i described jimin’s old vocals as tight, high, and thin, I would describe his new technique as open, deep, and resonant. I’ll have to find some clips to show the difference side by side.
he's not tightening his vocal cords to produce higher notes. if there is a note that's very high, he leans more towards a mix voice (head voice and chest voice) to produce a sound that can sound like belting without actually belting and puts breath support behind it to really push the resonance or he goes straight head voice. He’s not trying to hit challenging notes by pushing himself and hurting his voice anymore. he's pulling the weight of singing from lower down now for those more middle to lower notes and then leaning more into a mix for those higher notes. you can start to hear the difference back in the like crazy jazz version. He skips the highest notes to catch his breath and his voice sits more at the back of his throat instead of up in his nose making a lovely sound. I know to make the difference happen in my own voice but i don't know how to explain it, so you’ll have to try to sing the difference for yourself?
Jimin saying that he knew his technique would hurt his voice really was the confirming detail for me. We knew he was never satisfied with his vocals, but we never saw him outright say he knew how he was singing was wrong. I think the lack of vocal lessons back then was probably from their insane schedule and simply just a lack of time to get them done. No time to do vocal lessons meant that their schedule was packed to the point of overwork, which is another reason he was sounding off at that time. With the huge break bts got to work on solo stuff, there was so much more room for lessons, and i'm glad he took the opportunity because now he sounds amazing!! All these differences aside, Jimin still sounds like Jimin, and that’s the most important part
here's a little comparison video so you can try to hear the difference
I explained the fake love clip already, but when you listen to the who clip, you can tell he’s singing from a deeper spot and he’s really pulling strength from his breathing. Those higher notes are actually easier to sing when you use a “deeper” sounding tone. (and earlier in the clip when he sings the pre-chorus the final phrase sounds so crisp and clear an resonant and i basically swoon each time i listen to it)

For those who didn’t follow me from Twitter, you might not know that I’m a CG/VFX character animator by day. Here are all the movies I’ve worked on!
Captain America: Winter Soldier - digi-double stuff on the quinjet bridge fight, lots of shield bouncing animation
Sausage Party - too many things to mention, all of them suitably unspeakable
Surf’s Up 2: WaveMania - I animated the Fish Milk scene (and I’m sorry)
Hotel Transylvania 3 - lots of random shots here and there, biggest one is the dog running up the kraken tentacle at the end
Aquaman - more digidouble stuff, sharks and fish and Atlantean machines
Pokémon: Detective Pikachu - the Mr Mime scene of him putting out the match, some Mewtwo fight scene stuff, crowd animation
Sonic the Hedgehog - uncredited work on the original version
I pivoted to cute kids TV animation a few years ago so no more movies for me (probably) but it’s been a ride! And having a webcomic to work on has kept me sane throughout~

Btw I need you guys to know there are many youtube channels and other content producers out there that are not the artist of the work they host, and do not necessarily disclose that information.
A dear friend and fellow animator has a repeat commission client that hosts their work on youtube without credit, and yet, every comment is a compliment of how good the animation is, or how much they've "improved."
I'm not saying to stop watching, as clients vary, especially online. Income sources are income sources. But, be aware that this is a common dynamic between comissioners and artists.

seeing the anti-cgi post going around and it...bugs me. I agree! that cgi is overused and practical effects/set design/etc need to be included way more. a little nitpick is that while cgi falls under the vfx department in live action movies, cgi and vfx are different things. cgi is specifically using 3D models, while vfx is any effect done in post production. this includes! editing in things like practical effects that need to be edited into the film!
cgi, while the term often used only in a live action context when discussing, is what 3D animated films are. toy story is the first fully cgi movie. you like any 3D animated films or shows? cgi.
maybe I'm biased because this is what I'm studying and it will be my job but I think in these conversations it isn't acknowledged the skill it takes to create cgi elements of a film is A Lot. people go on about the skill of all the people working on practical effects...vfx and cgi also require a lot of work with minute details. vfx requires precise timing, often going frame by frame through thousands of frames. cgi requires knowledge of anatomy, movement, physics, to pull off successful models, rigs, and animation .
a great example of how these things can mesh well together is honor among thieves! there's so much praise for the practical effects, the costumes, all that and there absolutely should be. but the owlbear is cgi. the displacer beast and gelatinous cube are cgi. the dragon is cgi. and vfx artists put all those things together within the live action shots.
all this to say. I'm pretty tired of vfx and cgi being totally shit on without nuance. the industry needs to be criticized and changed significantly but that doesn't mean cgi and vfx are useless for anything other than erasing wires.

I thought there were many trans/nb people on my uni (animation/games/vfx) course when I was on it 5-7 years ago and there were like 5 of us in each year group, but the sheer amount of ppl I found out afterwards have transed their gender since (2 in my year group, 1 lecturer, and 1 in the year group above and below ours to my knowledge at current count if I haven’t forgotten about anyone) is both impressive and fairly unsurprising

Sometimes I think I don't explain The Artist's insecurities very well in Cyberpink 1824, but on the other hand...
IT'S JUST THE RESULT OF BEING IN A PROFESSION SPENT 75% INSIDE YOUR OWN HEAD AND DEPENDING ON THE SUBJECTIVE REACTIONS OF OTHERS TO GET YOUR BREAD.

Girl help I really need to do the test tasks for a new job or else my life is gonna get very bad real soon, but all I want to do is draw ttrpg characters.
#majek says shit#ok so Im jobless since august but I had a safe amount saved to live a little too comfortably until about now#and now I have money left to live relatively normally until January and after that uhhhhh bad 0 money left#I got caught in a trap of “animators are always wanted in gamedev you'll find a job in 2 weeks” thing everyone seems to genuinely believe#turns out every studio on earth is looking for Seniors and Leads or 3D animators that turn out to be 3D generalists able to do everything#from concept to every kind of model optimised for games and texturing and rigging and mocap and keyframe stuff and vfx is also nice#and I'm like “hello am animator know how to make character move. i can give them skeleton but not necessarily if in 2D”#“have a few years of experience in gamedev but got fired just before the premiere of my one title that will list me as animator”#got fired along with many others because the publisher backed out and there was no money to keep most of the artists this close to launch#so far only two studios followed through with the recruitment. one makes casino games and asked me 3 questions through mail#they wanted to know why im looking for a job. have I heard about them before and how much I wanna earn. also added that my personality#should shine through my answers. sure xd. the other is a mocap studio and they want me to do a test. in software I last used 5 years ago#and its mocap which I dont like and know almost nothing about how to do it#and I WANNA DRAW. I made a disaster of a cleric to replace Cayden in the old party and Im itching to draw him properly#also there is secret satan and a whole queue of scenes from recent sessions#including the lase one when Cayden was possessed by an ancient wizard (?) for a few seconds and now has mild ptsd#there were such cool visuals there because he was connected to a tentacle that pierced the back of his neck and his eyes went black#and I had to fight the party from that moment. hit them once with a big fire damage spell and then passed a save. and then failed again#fortunately the party destroyed the artifact that did the posessing and it ended. but my boy simultaneously experienced some cosmic horror#beyond his comprehension. and kinda saw his own hands casting fire at his friends. all while he was fighting in his head with some tentacles#and being watched by first disembodied black eyes and then by a shadowy figure#now he has weird nightmares of more cosmic horror and gets uneasy if he looks at the night sky for too long ;o;#I also have a drawing of the party celebrating their promotion to captains and like 3-4 sketches and one other big scene#in which Cayden has a romantic tension moment with another character while casting prot from evil on them to save them from mind control#also I have a commission to finish that a friend paid for LAST NOVEMBER#but that mocap studio is waiting for this test for so long now I have to do it if its the last thing I do in my life
