Czech Easter Traditions

Hello guys, as promised here are some Czech Easter traditions that I would like to share with you.

Barvení vajíček (egg colouring)

Traditionally, in the Czech Republic, we colour or paint eggs for Easter. Very often, we use hard-boiled eggs, or less often (because it is harder to do) we use eggshells (this type of Easter egg is called kraslice). Kraslice takes more practice and because the eggshell is empty inside, it is much more fragile and more likely to break while painting. The hard-boiled Easter eggs are eaten afterwards, while kraslice serve as decoration.

There are multiple ways of colouring Easter eggs – you can buy a colour powder (and mix it with hot water and vinegar), you can paint the egg with wax, you can use natural ingredients for colouring (such as onion peels, blueberries or beets), and much more.

Pletení pomlázky (braiding a whip made from pussywillow twigs)

Another Czech tradition is pletení pomlázky, or in English: braiding a whip made from pussywillow twigs. Pomlázka is then used in a way that may be shocking to some of you.

Koledování

Traditionally, on the morning of Easter Monday boys and men go around the neighbourhood with their pomlázka and a basket, stop at every house, whip the female residents and then receive some goods in return. This process is called koledování. It’s kind of like Halloween in the USA, just weirder. Boys often recite a poem while whipping the girls, and the girls then offer them the already mentioned Easter eggs, chocolates and candy in return. Girls also put a ribbon on the boy’s pomlázka. Very often a shot of alcohol is offered to the adults. The meaning behind the whipping of the girls is for them to stay young and beautiful.

Is this tradition perceived as sexist and weird nowadays? I would say that by some people (mainly the younger generation) yes. I personally quite dislike this tradition, it’s weird and I find it to be quite humiliating. What changed in the last few decades is that in most cases not all the boys visit all the houses anymore, as naturally villages and towns grew bigger and not everyone knows everyone anymore. Now, you would only visit your family members, friends or people you know well. Still, this tradition remains quite shocking to most foreigners... and I don’t blame them. It should be also mentioned that the whipping should be gentle, and if the boy is not gentle then he’s an asshole, sorry not sorry.

A poem that the boys would say while whipping the girl:

Hody hody doprovody,

Dejte vejce malovaný,

Nedáte-li malovaný,

Dejte aspoň bílý,

Slepička vám snese jiný

Loose translation: Give me a coloured egg, if you don’t give me a coloured one, give me at least a white one, your hen will lay another one for you.

Polévání vodou (ice bucket challenge but make it Easter)

There is, however, an opportunity for the girls to get their revenge. Traditionally, after noon (so 12am) or on Tuesday morning, the girls would pour buckets of cold water on the boys. The meaning behind this is also to stay young. However, this part of the tradition is not very present in the Czech Republic, and I have personally never seen anyone doing this (at least not where I come from, I am sure there are some regions where this happens).

Velikonoční beránek (Easter lamb)

A traditional sponge cake baked in a cake pan in the shape of a lamb. I think in the context of Easter it has a religious meaning, as Jesus is often called God’s lamb.

No Easter egg hunt

It may come as a surprise to some of you, but the Easter egg hunt does not exist in the Czech Republic.

Decorations

For Easter, Czech families often decorate their homes. Typically we use colours representing spring such as yellow, green and pink. We make sure to have a lot of flowers at home such as daffodils, tulips or golden rain (laburnum anagyroides). You would also find a lot of bunny, chicken or lamb decorations, as these animals are closely tied with Easter and spring in the Czech Republic.

PS: I would like to point out that there are more Czech Easter traditions in the Czech Republic, I mentioned just a few (those that I find to be the most present and traditional), but of course as everywhere, each family’s traditions can be different. The traditions can also differ based on the location (Moravia has slightly different traditions than West Bohemia for example). So if you are a Czech person and don’t feel happy about the traditions I chose, feel free to correct me or add more.

Hi, ahoj !!

The time goes on so fast!! We continue working online and making the conversations as dynamic as possible and we work a lot on recording the videos and uploading them to Youtube. I really enjoy recording the videos, although I would prefer to have face-to-face conversations.

The restrictions concerning Covid started to decrease the last week, I hope next year, when I come back from Spain, things will be better. This week we have started to do again Nordic Walking, I like it and I need move from being 7h in the office. I booked this month my flight to Spain and I really look forward to coming back home for Christmas. But this Covid situation is annoying me a lot, because I have to do the Covid test 72h before taking the flight and if I am positive I have to stay here in quarantine for Christmas, alone. I am worried about this, and I am a nervous, but I want to be positive, because if you think positive you attract positive things, or, at least, this is what my mum and I think.

But not even this situation makes me staying more time at home. Of course, I love being at home, especially with this cold, je moc zima!! However, I love walking,  travelling and meet some people. As we cannot travel abroad, we have gone this month to visit a friend from the on arrival training to Vysoké Myto. I loved this city, it is small and cosy. The weather was really good that weekend we went and I really enjoyed it, I laughed a lot with Wiebke and Jessica (she is also Spanish). Last weekend we went to Prague, I had never been in Prague and I loved it, although I would have liked to see a lively Prague. I plan to come back again before Christmas and see the Christmas market and lights. We spent the Saturday in Prague, with some friends of the on arrival training, and Prague with a good company is even better!

I love Vánoce (Christmas), and since today the Christmas tree and the market are in the central square. I love Christmas lights. I want to buy my friends and my family vánoční dárky (Christmas presents) and I also want to drink hot wine and I taste some typical Christmas Czech food. I am also very happy because I am seeing snow! The 1st of December when I woke up I saw it was snowing and there was snow on the ground, I love it, I am not used to see snow in Spain. Those days it is snowing, and, for me, Christmas time with snow is much nicer. Moreover, Wiebke and I have bought Christmas decoration for our flat, some lights and Wiebke made some handicrafts (stars). I love feeling the Christmas atmosphere at home. We are also baking sweets together, and it is new for me, I never bake on Christmas, so it is new for me. I want to enjoy Christmas in Pilsen as much as I can before I come back to Spain.

Káva pro každého

(27. 12. 2018) Zrnka, přístroje i doplňkové kávové náčiní definitivně pronikly do zorného pole obecných obchodníků i širší kofeinuchtivé veřejnosti. Co a jakým způsobem svým zákazníkům (nejen) v předvánočním čase nabízejí giganti české elektronické komerce?

Při výběru kávovaru a mlýnku v uplynulých měsících na mě průběžně vyskakovaly reklamy od Google založené na mém hledání a občas se týkaly, vedle krásných a drahých pák, i plastových automatů v rámci nabídky největších tuzemských e-shopů. Jedním z nejčastějších byl Catler, značka, jež spadá do portfolia australského konglomerátu Breville Group, kterému se upsal i špičkový šéfkuchař Heston Blumenthal.

To, že známí oboroví praktici licencují své jméno a pověst výrobcům není pochopitelně nic nového (vzpomeňme alespoň kontroverzně nahlíženou reklamu na instantní vývar Knorr nebo bobtnající porcelánový a pyžamový byznys Dity P.), ale v českém kávovém kontextu jde pořád o věc relativně novou a nezřídka i lehce úsměvnou a moc by mě zajímalo, jestli to espresso Petře Veselé a cappuccino Zdeňku Smrčkovi opravdu chutnalo. A nezbývá než doufat, že má přední česká baristka ve svém školícím centru vedle špičkového profesionálního Nuova Simonelli i dostatek instruktážních mašinek Sage, neboť účastníci by mohli pociťovat jistý rozpor mezi možnostmi obou strojů. Ale budiž: každý jen trochu poučený divák nebo fanoušek kávy si udělá názor sám. 

Snad nejzábavnější v rámci doporučujících návodů našich velkých e-shopů je video vyhledávače Heureka, který si dělá legraci z ustáleného piccolího stereotypu, ale zároveň se dopouští několika chyb a zjednodušení, což reflektuje i diskuse pod videem (zpočátku může dle tvrzení autorů příprava kávy z páky trvat přes 15 minut a časem se lze dostat i na méně než polovinu, káva se pěchuje do sítka “ze vzduchu”, varování před prodražením šálku kávy z kvalitních zrnek apod). A že je scéna strašlivě zahlcena tvrdým světlem a prominentním logem Jura...

Tuzemské webové obchody mají často své kávové videonávody rozdělené na několik částí, ale nás pochopitelně nejvíc zajímá espresso. Alza si najala na svou instruktáž Roberta Trevisana, průkopníka italské kávové kultury v ČR, který jistě udělal pro popularizaci a osvětu mnohé, ale proč dává ve videu, které by mělo být vzorové, posyp na cappuccino, mi zůstáva záhadou. Plastový tamper, nevysvětlení některých termínů (ví laik, co je to puk nebo dvojitý výměník zmíněný v dalším videu?) a koneckonců i nepříliš dobrá čeština (proč nemůže kávový odborník připravit textovou část a školený hlas to k nastříhanému videu přečíst?) jsou věci, které by mě coby předpokládaného zákazníka Alzy asi odradily. 

Ale je hezké, že největší český e-shop už má i svá vlastní zrnka. Nejprve jsem sice nechápal, co znamená 25x vystaveno (s nižším číslem označení se setkáváme u spotřební elektroniky, která je ve vitríně nebo na vyzkoušení a pak má vlídnější cenu než nerozbalený produkt), ale zde je tím zřejmě míněno, že pytlíček si může člověk prohlédnout a osahat na 25 kamenných pobočkách. A zamýšlet se též nad vizuálním motivem na obalu i laxním přístupem pražiče v doprovodném videu (potrhanost na balónu cremy zřejmě způsobují lana vedoucí ke koši). To Mall.cz je ve svém videu o výběru pákových kávovarů daleko konvenčnější (15 barů, káva v podech i výsledek v podobě cappuccina budí spíše nedůvěru). 

A to je dnes prosím vše. Podívejte se na videa a příští pondělí, 31. 12. 2018 v 10.00 hod., se zde objeví vyhlášení nejlepších káv a baristů uplynulého roku. Moc se těším a už pár dní si třídím záznamy o tom, která espressa a cappuccina byla skutečně nej... :-)

Rok 2018 je za námi a tenisové dvorce se po zimní pauze opět probouzí k životu. Oko diváka bude moct sledovat nejen hráče bojující o body, tituly a grandslamy. V pozadí by neměli zůstat ani sběrači míčků, bez kterých by to zkrátka nešlo. Připomeňme si veselé momenty, které přinesl uplynulý rok a ve kterých byli v hlavních rolích právě malí pomocníci.
