Cap-IM Rec Week - Cap-IM Sunday
It's day 7 (the final day) of @cap-ironman's rec week event! Today's recommendations feature stories created for previous Cap-Iron Man events. Thanks so much to them for organizing this event, and all the other events that inspired the following fics!
I Look and in the Mirror the World Shatters by @navaan, art by Caz and KakushiMiko (616, Mature, 25,807 words)
Created for: 2022 Captain America/Iron Man Big Bang
Summary: After Pleasant Hill, Civil War II and right in the middle of Secret Empire, Steve Rogers (the real one) comes back and realizes a copy of himself is now leading HYDRA and has taken over the world. With Tony dead and only an AI copy of him existing and nobody trusting the face of Steve Rogers, he decides to make things right and help the heroes trapped inside and outside the planetary field. One way to do it: Infiltrating HYDRA by playing the role of the other him. What he finds is more than he bargained for.
Tabula Rasa by @sineala, art by @veryvincible (Captain America Corps, Explicit, 37,819 words)
Created for: Captain America/Iron Man Reverse Bang 2022
Summary: Sometimes superheroes save the world. And sometimes they're too late. Captain America's longtime villain Superia had a plan for revenge. She stopped the Avengers from ever finding Steve in the ice, tore the Avengers apart, and turned the world into her own personal authoritarian dystopia. A team made up of Captains America from across the multiverse came to set things right: they united all the remaining superheroes, took down Superia, and made sure the world would find Steve again. Tony spent Superia's hellish reign as her prisoner, a suicidally-depressed disembodied brain trapped in a jar for years on end, begging the Avengers to kill him and put him out of his misery. The Captain America Corps instead gives him his freedom, a brand-new body, and even the Avengers -- including his very own Captain America. But Tony's not entirely sure he wants to be here. He's walking wounded, and he thinks some wounds are too deep to heal. He thinks there's no chance the Avengers will ever be what they could have been. He thinks there's no way Steve will ever be the friend and partner he could have been on so many other worlds. Luckily for Tony, Steve happens to disagree with that.
More below the cut!
A Little Confused But He Got the Spirit by jellybeanforest (@jellybeanforest-a-go-go) (MCU, Mature, 3,298 words)
Created for: 2021 Captain America/Iron Man Holiday Exchange
Summary: On their third date, Steve decides to come clean about his lycanthropy. Tony is surprisingly understanding, almost too much so. Based on a prompt by DepressingGreenie.
on the inherent homoeroticism of cake decoration by Welcoming_Disaster (@welcomingdisaster) (616, General Audiences, 8,191 words)
Created for: 2020 Captain America/Iron Man Holiday Exchange
Summary: “She’s matchmaking, Barton,” Carol sighed. “We,” Thor corrected, thumping himself hard in the chest, “art matchmaking.” “Who, Cap n’ Tony?” Clint asked, his mouth full. “Cap and Tony,” Janet confirmed, cutting herself a thin slice of egg and gently depositing it on her whole grain avocado toast, “it’s getting ridiculous.” “Wait, I thought they were—“ Clint frowned, glancing around the room as though to confirm. Nothing but confused faces met his questioning gaze. “Huh. I really thought they were fucking.” “And there is the crux of the issue,” Jess licked a bit of spaghetti sauce off her lip. “Aye,” agreed Thor, “there’s rub.” ----------- The team tries to set up Steve and Tony. Things don't go as planned.
An Error in the System by orphan_account, art by Jellybeanforest (@jellybeanforest-a-go-go) (MCU, Mature, 45,224 words)
Created for: 2020 Captain America/Iron Man Big Bang
Summary: When the Avengers faced Ultron, they believed that Vision completed his task to lock Ultron out of the internet. After Sokovia, no one thinks that Ultron survived. Everyone is wrong. Ultron’s code persists, hidden in the deepest trenches of the internet. Soon, it rises to cause chaos around the world and the only way to stop a catastrophe is to meet Ultron face to face. But Ultron is computer code – elusive, persistent, and viral. The only way to confront him is to meet the AI on equal footing within the bowels of the internet itself. Steve and Tony enter the virtual world of Ultron’s mind, passing through the rims to get to the center Hub of the AI’s existence. Along the way they face challenges and nightmares, hardships and truths. Truths that hurt and haunt them. Now they have to deal with a genocidal killer AI, and a truth that could destroy them. Steve blames himself for everything that went wrong with his relationship with Tony, but that doesn't mean he isn't still hoping and pining for someone who will never love him in return.
The Fabric of Reality by Neverever (@captainneverever), art by Jayjayverse (616, Mature, 26,210 words)
Created for: 2019 Captain America/Iron Man Big Bang
Summary: Tony loves being Iron Man and the Avengers. But anyone can see that the Avengers are struggling as a team. While he helps Jan solve their problems, Tony meets freelance Artist Steve Rogers. Tony believes that everything is going to turn out great -- the Avengers will pull together, Tony has a gorgeous boyfriend, and the supervillains will be defeated. What more could the modern superhero and CEO want out of life? Except that Tony has a few secrets that threaten to undermine his happiness. For one thing, Tony remembers that Captain America was an Avenger when everyone else thinks he died at the end of World War II. And that's just the tip of the iceberg.
The Don'ts Of Dating (And How They Can Win You A Man) by Mozzarella (@muchymozzarella), art by @acachette (Marvel, General Audiences, 5,162 words)
Created for: 2019 Cap-IM Reverse Bang
Summary: In which Steve Rogers fills in the Don't column of "Cosmo's Dos and Dont's of Dating" and somehow makes it work, while Tony Stark marvels at the fact that he's picking this weird (yet unbearably sweet) artist from Brooklyn over Captain Goddamn America. AU where Tony is known as Iron Man but Cap's identity is secret even to the other Avengers.
The Moon and the Sea by @dirigibleplumbing, art by Bella (MCU, Explicit, 81,058 words)
Created for: 2018 Captain America/Iron Man Big Bang
Summary: Steve has lived his whole life in the coastal California town of Nublado. He’s spent the last few years trying to move on from a traumatic event in his past, and he finds new joy when he befriends—and quickly falls for—reclusive local billionaire Tony Stark. Then Tony abruptly breaks things off and won’t reply when Steve reaches out. Steve’s friends Clint and Nat have his back, at least. But… is someone following him everywhere? What’s with the human teeth Steve and his friends found while they were out fishing? How did the Scarlet Witch know so much about him? And why are there so many crows around?
Tony Stark and the Subterranean Escapade by @veldeia (Iron Man Noir, Teen And Up Audiences, 20,279 words)
Created for: Captain America/Iron Man Bingo 2016
Summary: Soon after the end of the War, a French cave explorer contacts Tony for help concerning a mysterious artifact found deep underground. It's time for a new era of adventures for the hero of Marvels, together with his friends, including a certain war-time acquaintance named Steve Rogers, with whom he has grown quite close. Bingo fill for the prompt "Infinity Gems (Make Life Difficult)”
Dreams of War, Dreams of Liars by @teaberryblue (MCU, Teen And Up Audiences, 34,438 words)
Created for: 2014 Captain America/Iron Man Holiday Exchange
Summary: When Steve succumbs to a malevolent attack that puts him permanently to sleep, the only way to wake him up is to unearth a technology that hasn't been used in twenty years. Welcome back to Dreamvision, Tony Stark. This is an MCU canon-compliant story that incorporates the science of Inception, rather than a straight-up AU or crossover.
Phantom by Del_Rion, art by Gabbi (MCU, Mature, 28,426 words)
Created for: Cap/Iron Man Reverse Bang 2013
Summary: After Steve gets mysteriously possessed by dark magic, the Avengers must contain the situation and save their leader without losing their own lives in the process. Steve keeps escaping, however – and unerringly migrates towards Tony every time. Written for: Cap/Iron Man Reverse Bang 2013. Story based on & inspired by the beautiful art by the talented Gabbi!
If Through a Door by jibrailis, art by tripperfunster (MCU, Explicit, 44,036 words)
Created for: Cap/Iron Man Big Bang 2012
Summary: Tony is accused of murder on an alien planet; Steve marries him to bring him home.

SteveTony Weekly - September 17th
Happy Sunday, friends! Here’s today’s list--it’s gonna be kinda light over the next week or two, because work is kicking my ass. Enjoy though! And be sure to leave a comment/kudos for the fic you enjoy!
~*~
Transistor-Powered Teammate by veryvincible
“You know, I always thought Tony Stark would be the one to master time travel. When I first got here, I half thought he must have a time machine laying around somewhere.”
Heart’s desire. by captainstars
Neither Steve nor Tony could have reacted in time to the purple blast that exploded out from the stone, bathing both of them in the warmth of its eerie light.
“You will realize it.” The man professed, his gaze startlingly clear for someone who had been rambling until then.
“You will realize your heart’s desire.”
OR
The fuck buddies + ABO AU.
make me yours by complicationstoo
Steve sighs, “With the way the serum made me look and the strength it gave me, I know you were expecting me to be, I don’t know, more dominant in bed, I guess. And I know it’s a fair assumption, I’m not saying it isn’t, but it’s not really true.”
Tony is grateful that Steve can’t see his face right now, because he can’t mask the utter surprise on it when it finally clicks.
“Oh,” Tony says. “Oh, that’s - oh.”
tomorrow by complicationstoo
“She’s just a friend, you know,” Natasha says, and Steve nods. He does know, because Tony told him himself a few days ago, then again tonight when he introduced her to everyone. But his hand was on her lower back, and hers was on his arm, and they were both smiling and so clearly familiar with each other that it didn’t matter that they’ve known each other since they were kids. All Steve could see was that someone else was Tony’s date for a gala he didn’t even want to come to in the first place, making the whole night that much more miserable for it.
Foot, meet mouth by itsallAvengers
Peter finds a ring in Steve's jacket pocket.
Peter confronts Steve.
Peter discovers it is, in fact, not actually Steve's jacket.
Peter contemplates how long his dad is going to ground him when he finds out what he's just done.
Put Me Back Together by AvengersNewB
Steve holds it together to see through what needs to be done, with Tony missing in space and half of the universe snapped out of existence.
Only until Tony comes back to earth.
---
Infinity War fix-it.
A Bit Of Sweet Sugar (For The Veins) by dingadur
Steve finds a flogger in Tony's underwear drawer and promptly freaks the fuck out.
They figure it out, though.
fun & games by welcoming_disaster
In which Steve Rogers keeps making bets he's going to lose.
Captain Planet by tsukinofaerii
After the Red Skull incident, Steve needs to get away from things for a while. Tony, being the caring and considerate person he is, makes arrangements. But the Steve that comes back might be a little more than the world can handle.
buy the brooklyn bridge by plingo_kat
It’s a whole new world, and Steve finds himself fitting in pretty well. Especially with Tony Stark as a guide.
My Heart Would Benefit From a Little Tenderness From Time to Time by SuperstringSymphony
“Come with me.” Tony licks his lips, blue eyes lifting to meet Steve's. “We've both had a long week, I thought you might like to relax.” Tony's gaze darts from side to side. Steve has noticed since they started this that Tony only ever truly looks nervous when he's talking to him. “The car is around the front, what do you say, weekend getaway?” Tony smiles, stroking a hand down his back with a featherlight touch. Steve just barely represses a shiver, eyeing Tony for a moment. With other people he's always a little shuttered. Here though, with Steve, his expression is unguarded, eyes bright with hope. He looks a little strained though, as if the week has taken its toll on him as well.
When I think about you by sirona
Five times someone saw Steve sass the hell out of Tony and one time Tony finally bought a clue. Also known as the story of Captain Sasspants more than handling his own with Tony Stark at his most devious.
Two Out of Three (Ain't Bad) by plingo_kat
It blindsides him one morning in the middle of his customary third cup of coffee; Steve walks through the door in loose cotton pants, shirt pulled up to wipe the sweat off his face from his usual morning workout, and Tony thinks: adorable.
Not a Breakup by Annie D (scaramouche)
Tony knew it was a bad idea to start sleeping with Steve. It could mess up team dynamics, make things even more awkward between them in the future, or just plain get in the way of their trying to save the world. Tony foresaw all of the above but not the advent of feelings, and at the most inopportune moment.
For a Certain Definition of Happiness by Neverever
Steve Rogers should be happy - he has a job leading the new team of Avengers, friends, and a steady girlfriend. He works well with Tony Stark, who has retired as Iron Man and provides financial backing and technical support for the team. Steve's life becomes complicated when the Avengers encounter a mysterious supervillain crimewave, Helmut Zemo wants to legislate the Avengers out of existence, and his relationship with Sharon begins to fall apart. Then, after the death of a close friend, Steve begins to question if he is truly happy.
And, worse, why can't he get Tony off his mind?
Ares & Vulcan by Captain_Panda
"I am the god of war. And I’m here to fight the mad Titan Thanos."
Tony Stark dies. Steve Rogers endeavors to fix that. In the process, he transcends.
An Endgame Greek god fusion. Because time travel.

If you could write an official Cap or IM run right this second, what would you write?
Thanks for asking!
I had to give this a bit of thought, actually, because my instant answer to this question used to be "a Cap/IM team-up book" but, uh, that's actually happening. Hooray. In my dreams it would be an ongoing, though. And also in my dreams it would be named Tales of Suspense because... well... yeah.
I am assuming Marvel wouldn't let me make them bi. Either of them. I'd settle for just Tony being canonically bi. Alas.
I feel like I'm pretty transparent in my Iron Man desires, which is that, basically, I want an Iron Man book about Tony Stark -- someone else can even be Iron Man! I'm not picky! he just has to be alive and in the book! -- where Tony is a good and kind person and people like him. I miss when he had friends and not just one randomly selected redheaded woman as a sidekick and also now the entire world hates him for existing. I'd have Rhodey around more consistently. I'd probably put Pepper back in the book. I would, actually, bring Happy back to life, because he's been dead since Civil War and everyone else gets to come back so why not him? Also then I'd get Happy and Pepper back together.
I feel like a lot of Iron Man writers are determined to make their mark on the character, which means that something big and transformative happens and Tony gets massively injured, usually. I might give him a heart problem again, though. But I feel like I wouldn't want to go as far as, like, killing him again and I'd just write something with a lot of nice character moments and settle for making a mark on the character as "writing an Iron Man comic that the people who haven't liked an Iron Man comic since Director of SHIELD will enjoy."
I would pull, like, the most obscure one-off Silver Age villains I could find and put them in. Because why not. It doesn't really matter to me who the villain is -- although, yes, there are certainly characters I always like -- but I feel like upping the stakes by adding bigger and more destructive villains doesn't up the stakes as much as Marvel thinks it does, and I'd be happy with someone who just wants to completely wreck Tony's life on an emotional, personal, individual level (this is probably why I like Ty and Whitney as much as I do), probably with some punching included somewhere because I bet editorial makes you include some punching. The stakes just have to be big to him, I think.
I think it's harder for me to say what I'd do with a Cap run because I feel like Marvel comes up with way more Iron Man runs that are not to my taste than Cap runs that are not to my taste. There are a lot of Cap runs that aren't my absolute favorite but mostly they aren't terrible, either. They're just... there. I also think Marvel has been generally more consistent about Steve's personality traits over the years than they've been about Tony's.
In terms of things I'd like to see in a Cap run that I've never seen much of, I think I would like for Steve to be wrong about something and apologize for it. A lot of times, everyone in canon treats Steve as an infallible moral authority and he's... just a guy, you know. A really great guy, but he's still human. I just want to see him make a mistake and deal with it. I think that would be fun. I think he'd learn something. I'd like to see it. I still want him to be a good and kind person too! I just want him to learn to deal with doing something wrong! It would be a learning experience for everyone. Tony gets to make massive mistakes pretty frequently! Why not Steve?
I think that any comic book about a guy whose name is "Captain America" is of necessity going to be political in some sense whether or not certain segments of fandom like it. And I think Steve is at his best when he earnestly, though not uncritically, believes in the dream. I guess I'd like him to embody America the same way I'd like canon to treat Steve's character -- aware of flaws and injustices and problems and things that could stand to be improved, but with hope that things can be better for everyone someday. I would like both Steve and America to recognize their problems and work to correct them, I guess. I want Captain America to stand up for everyone and I want him to be compassionate and understanding about the problems that people who are not cis straight extremely-able-bodied Christian white men face. I think the feeling I would most like to feel from a Cap book is optimism about the future, honestly. That always makes me happiest.
I don't think I am necessarily the person I would want to write this, because I feel completely unqualified, but I sure want to read it.
(While we're at it I'd like a Captain America book that is really, really clear that fascism is not good, and I don't mean, like, putting him up against Hydra and calling it a day. I would like it to be explicitly clear what fascism is about and how to recognize it (like, more than "Hydra wears fancy uniforms") and who exactly fascism is against (and I mean real people and not, like, Inhumans -- sure, yeah, we all like a good Mutant Metaphor sometimes, but I don't think this is the place for that) and that all of this is Really Bad. And I don't think this is a big ask for a character who was introduced punching Hitler in the face. They used to have Cap comics about this all the time! I think now would be a great time to do that again.)
In terms of villains, they're not all necessarily villains all the time, but I have always thought that it's really fascinating that there are so many characters in Steve's orbit who can basically be described as "Steve But What If He Were A Bad Person." William Burnside. John Walker, to an extent. Frank Simpson. Hydra Steve. There are also people who ended up with the serum (or variants) who did not end up Bad, and I'm thinking of, like, Isaiah Bradley and also people like Brian Falsworth. And I would honestly be really interested in seeing a Cap run that tackles all of this and is like, okay, why did some of these people turn out this way? Why is Steve different? How does he feel about all of these people? Do they make him feel differently about being Captain America? How does he understand being himself? What does the shield really mean to him? I think it would make a change from "Wow, the Red Skull is alive again and he wants to take over America again and he's probably got a Cosmic Cube again. You don't say."
Anyway. Yeah. That's never gonna happen. But it'd be nice.

Ooh, expand on Museum of Thought and Minds cape Thing? 👀👀👀
“Museum of Thought” is a Star Trek AOS Kirk/Spock thing. The current title is taken from a song of the same name and is in reference to mind melds. This thing is like, 30,000 words already, maybe 33% drafted and I have it 90% outlined but I haven’t worked on it in awhile. Title subject to change.
The plot is like... Farscape’s “Nerve (Part 1)” / “The Hidden Memory (Part 2)” meets TOS’s “The Enterprise Incident,” “The Naked Time,” and “The Conscience of the King” meets Voyager’s “The Q and the Grey” meets “The Voyage Home” meets Star Trek [SPOILER REDACTED] plus a lot of mind-melds. There are two heists, Spock seduces a Romulan commander, Kirk pretends to be seduced by a woman of Alien Species I Made Up to save his crew, Kirk gets sexually harassed a lot, Kirk and Spock get captured by three different villains (once due to a misunderstanding), they’re stranded on a planet briefly, a “Kodos was right” group is hanging around, there are Romulans, Klingons, and Alien Species I Made Up after them, Q is there a couple times, consequences from “Into Darkness” show up and hopefully it’s a slight fix-it for one of my least favorite things about that film, they meet space whales, the Enterprise disobeys direct orders from Starfleet, and the climax is when nearly everyone converges on [SPOILER REDACTED]. There might be a “Turnabout Intruder” bit. There will probably be an “Operation -- Annihilate!” bit happening, to some extent.
The “mindscape thing” is 616 Steve/Tony. I’ve barely started it. It’s after Civil War and Tony and Carol are in some kind of alternate universe or illusion without knowing how or why they got there. The only difference between where they are and their universe is that here, Steve is alive and he and Tony are in an established romantic relationship. EXCEPT, lol, my filename is actually a spoiler because... that is not what is actually happening. In reality, post-brain-wipe Tony is mid-brain-download and trapped in a recursive mindscape thing and Steve goes into his mind to try to get him out.
(this is in reference to this post, send me an ask or leave me a comment if you want to know about any of my other WIPs!)

hello! sorry for the ask out of nowhere, but i was wondering if you had any steve-centric fic recs, especially any dealing with hurt (comfort optional) or emotional whump?
hello dear! never say sorry for sending an ask, i truly love to receive them, even if i'm not at capacity to respond immediately!
here are some steve centric hurt/hurt&comfort fics from moots that i think deserve some more love! mind tags as some of these are dead doves!
After the Devil is Gone by Ironlawyer
When Steve leaves to travel the country on his bike, Tony comes with him. But Steve is not ready to face those particular demons yet.
troubled man, troubled home by Welcoming_Disaster
“I need to not be able to think right now. I need you to drown it all out.” Steve reaches up, setting a hand on the side of Tony’s face. It’s intimate, almost uncomfortably so. “Hurt me.”
as if we'd never left by veryvincible
Steve's been alone in his town for quite some time; his lover disappeared, possibly even left, after he was infected with lycanthropy over a decade ago, and the townspeople hardly want him around. But he's useful to them, at least, and when a string of thefts along the northern building strike fear into the hearts of the townspeople, he takes initiative and investigates. He's not prepared for what he finds.
5, 4, 3, 2, 1 by Kiyaar
In another world, on another Earth, the Superhuman Civil War has a darker, bloodier end.
you can think that you’re in love, when you’re really just in pain by lomku
Every day, they take Steve, and every day, he comes back a little less pristine.
A Borrowed Body by dirigibleplumbing
After Steve shows up in San Francisco, Tony uses Extremis to make him strong and beautiful again. Tony wants sex in return, and Steve gives it to him—he owes this body to Tony, after all. Every month after that, he visits Tony to keep up his end of the bargain. That will just have to be enough for him.
Black Space for Many Dreams by Missy_dee811
The search for Tony is on. Finding him in an abandoned warehouse, Steve wonders if he should say the things that are on his mind.
-
and two self recs of fics i've got ongoing! :'))) stop bath
It’s not complicated. One piece of paper. Short, to the point. Times New Roman. Repulsive. Continue engagements with Tony Stark until further instructions. ‘Engagements.’ Such a pretty, innocuous term. ‘Until further instructions.’ Such a sweet, auguring threat. They don’t even have to say, or else. Steve gets the message: keep his private life private and his employment gainful by continuing to suck dick.
Devils In the Canyon
It’s been eight months since Steve survived Fisk’s attempt to shoot him dead in the street. Now, he has been captured by vampire hunters who are looking to torture him for information about Tony Stark’s daytime retreat location. But, Steve’s not much good at following directions or giving into pain. And as he refuses to give up Stark, Timely refuses to give up on their Sheriff. They’ll find him, he knows it. Steve just has to hope it isn’t too late to save what’s left of him.

feel free to add more anyone! go forth and comment love!! 💟

Cap-IM Rec Week - Fluffy Friday
Day 5 of @cap-ironman's rec week event!
Please enjoy some nice stories where nice things happen - many are also very funny!
Work of Art by veryvincible (@veryvincible) (616 | Mature | Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings | 5,656 words)
Summary: Tony smelled… off. Wrong. He smelled strange in a way that would justify the cold, Steve thought. There was a metallic layer to blood that Steve was used to smelling, and in Tony, that was distinctly not present. So, Steve concluded, Tony must have had an iron deficiency. Something to that effect, at least. He became faint without warning, he was chilly as the dead, and he was as pale as any man Steve had ever seen. - Tony Stark is a vampire. It's common knowledge, at this point. Somehow, Steve isn't aware of that little fact.
Whatever sorrow shakes from your heart by BlossomsintheMist (@blossomsinthemist) (616 | Teen And Up Audiences | No Archive Warnings Apply | 7,866 words)
Summary: Steve gets hurt, and the team bands together to make him feel better. Set in the early classic days of 616 canon, not long after Steve joined the Avengers; written for Project Happy Steve.
Machines and Marvels by rainbowninja167 (@rainbowtitania) (MCU | Teen And Up Audiences | No Archive Warnings Apply | 23,443 words)
Summary: "The only future in which you have a hope of defeating Thanos is one where the Avengers remain whole and undivided. Do you understand? No matter what else happens, it’s imperative that the Avengers stay together." “Wait. What the fuck are the Avengers?” Or: In an alternate timeline where the Avengers never formed, Steve and Tony need a crash course in team bonding. Stephen Strange just had to take that literally.
More below the cut!
On the Wing by FestiveFerret (@festiveferrets) (MCU | Teen And Up Audiences | No Archive Warnings Apply | 1,572 words)
Summary: "You have a seagull on your head."
inside man by Mizzy (@mizzy2k) (616 | General Audiences | No Archive Warnings Apply | 1,085 words)
Summary: Steve realizes that Iron Man is a great source of inside-knowledge for his first date with Tony Stark! Also available as a podfic read by Cathalinareads (@cathalinaheart)
Get Some Now by Sineala (@sineala) (616 | Teen And Up Audiences | No Archive Warnings Apply | 10,376 words)
Summary: Avengers Mansion has a mysterious feline infestation. Meanwhile, Steve just can't figure out how to ask Tony out on a date. And the thirteen teleporting cats sure aren't helping matters any. Also available as a podfic read by where_thewind_blows (@flowersthroughthecracks)
no matchmaking before breakfast by nanasekei (@elcorhamletlive) (MCU | Not Rated | Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings | 3,435 words)
Summary: “I don’t even find Steve attractive,” Natasha says, eyes following greedily every drop of coffee the machine pours, for once in her life genuinely unaware of the impact her words are about to cause.
More Than Skin Deep by Sineala (@sineala) (616 | Teen And Up Audiences | No Archive Warnings Apply | 3,521 words)
Summary: Tony can just about accept the fact that he and Steve were kidnapped and replaced by Skrulls for three months. But what he can't figure out is why none of the Avengers noticed. And what he really can't figure out is why none of their teammates will tell them what the Skrulls did while they were gone. Gift With Purchase by sabrecmc (@sabrecmc) (MCU | Teen And Up Audiences | Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings | 5,599 words)
Summary: “Just…” and Tony could practically hear Pepper attempting to rub the tension out of her temples. “Just so we are clear,” Pepper began, trying to sound business-like, as if this were just any other phone call about stocks or production or whatever it was Pepper was usually blathering on about, “At the gala event for the Wounded Warriors Foundation, of which Stark Industries is a major donor, you met one Steven G. Rogers, Captain, U.S. Army Special Forces, one of the most decorated soldiers in all the armed forces, one of the handful of living Medal of Honor recipients, the man People Magazine dubbed “Captain America” in their front page story about his battlefield heroics that saved multiple lives, which went on to detail how his spare time is devoted to, and I’m quoting here, “providing art therapy to troubled and disadvantaged youth from the Brooklyn, New York area where Capt. Rogers grew up,” and you mistook him for a high-priced hooker and then proceeded to proposition him.” Tony paused, breathing in deeply. “Well, when you say it like that, it just sounds bad.”

SteveTony Weekly - June 18th
I read so much this week!!! And so much was delightful I’m super excited about this list! I did re-read Bulletpoints this week which is 100% reflected in my fic reading as well. Enjoy that.
Check out this week’s reads and be sure to leave your author a comment/kudos!
~*~
Time, Space, Flesh by veryvincible
“I’ve got a hotel room,” Tony said.
“And if we’re seen?”
Tony’s response came quick, too confident. He’d given the same spiel many times before. “Oh, you know. Good friends. Had a bit to drink. Maybe we’re French— you know how it is. Besides, we’ve been here for how long, now? If anyone was going to notice you, you’d think they’d have done it by now.”
The Day Before Tomorrow by lastdream
Less than twenty-four hours before the Iron Man's last fight, Steve Rogers gets an evening to himself.
Icebreaker by Sineala
Months after Tony is murdered on a strange, starless world, a world almost no one remembers, Steve plummets from a drone plane into the cold waters of the North Atlantic. He's fully expecting not to survive -- but instead he wakes up on another new world, where he meets a very familiar stranger. And it turns out the two of them have a lot in common.
Not Your Reality (The Time-Out Remix) by Veldeia
An unlikely visitor crash-lands at Natasha Stark and Steve Rogers' doorstep on the eve of their wedding. Just who is this alternate universe Iron Man?
Marriage and Mate Chases by NotEvenCloseToStraight
A Regency-ish AU:
Strict, stern Alpha Captain Steve Rogers is firmly in control of himself, his army, and his life and intends to marry an Omega who shares the same ideals while wild, flighty Omega!Tony loves to flaunt Howard's rules, society's expectations and has no intention of settling down.
An arranged marriage forces Alpha and Omega together, but Steve's constant disapproval and Tony's refusal to compromise leads to anger and arguments, missed heats, harsh ruts and a lack of bonding bites. Vicious rumours fly about the Omega's fidelity and the Alpha's ability to control his mate and when Steve runs away to war to distance himself from his unpredictable husband, Tony turns to new friends and illicit activities to hide his hurting heart.
Steve returns from war a changed man ready to be a good husband, dedicating every minute of every day to winning Tony's heart back, but Tony is tired of being ignored, busy with his own projects and unwilling to give the Alpha another chance.
With outside forces plotting to ruin what little happiness they have, are Steve and Tony doomed to be unbonded husbands, married but never truly mates?
Some Dragons Are Famous Dragons by Eudoxia
Bucky's not surprised when Steve beings home stray cats, dogs, and even a raccoon once, but a dragon?
Really, Steve? A dragon?
A dragon that likes to steal tools and watch the news about missing persons, too.
Anthony and Natasha by TheCityLightShow
On Steve's sixteenth birthday, as was the norm, he woke up with a name on his wrist, etched beautifully into his skin. In blocky, scruffy handwriting now sat “Natasha Stark” on his left wrist.
It was elegant handwriting, but not in a way that anyone other than Steve would share the notion.
Now, he's out of the ice, and he lifts his wrist to his face as his vision swims for a second. Oh thank god, he thinks at the sight of the black blur that mars his wrist, and then his thought processes stutter and screech to halt because it's changed.
The handwriting is still the blocky scruffy script that he loves, that holds comfort for him in the cross of the t and the arc of the r, but it's not Natasha. It doesn't say Natasha Stark any more.
No, the name on his wrist is Anthony Stark.
This time – this new time, Director Fury explains to him, this time sixty seven years in the future – this time he will find him. Whether they're ninety like he should be, or closer to his actual age, Steve won't make the same mistake twice.
He doesn't tell SHIELD that the name in their file is now wrong.
Emergency Protocol by navaan
In New Avengers V1 era, Tony and Steve discuss the Avengers Protocol for Bang or Die situations. It's awkward. It gets hot - and then it gets out of hand but maybe they're getting to the heart of something that they should have discussed a long time ago.
You could have my heart, and I would break it for you by Missy_dee811
The mission they’d been on had been an abject failure. Even if the rest of the Avengers had been able to stay on task, it wouldn’t matter. Two of their own were missing: Iron Man and Captain America.
Sacrifice the Gift by hollyandvice (hiasobi_writes)
When a biological agent nearly takes the life of Captain America, Iron Man risks everything to keep his friend alive. Now Tony Stark needs to deal with the fallout.
Sleepwalking by NotEvenCloseToStraight
Every year on Tony Stark's birthday, his soulmate Steven Grant Rogers crosses time and distance to spend the day with him...until the day the Valkyrie goes into the water in 1943.
Fifty years in the future, Tony starts a desperate search to find Steve beneath the ice, racing against time and fate to bring his soulmate into the newest century so they can finally be together.
like daylight by ohjustpeachy
Because through all of it, the slammed fists and the miscommunications, the people he invited into his bed and kicked out in the morning, he never thought that it would be Steve Rogers in the end.
Or, Tony thinks back on past relationships and why they never worked out.
Nothing Else but Miracles (An Ancient Secrets and New-born Dreams Remix) by Muccamukk
In the rough and tumble of the Lower East Side, the only constants in Steve's life are the solid black letters of the name on his wrist. Because even with the law and society against them, his world falling apart piece by piece, and his search for his soulmate taking him to stranger and wilder places, Steve has faith that finding Tony Stark is only a matter of time.
my one and only by meidui (orphan_account)
Tony has been self-conscious about his laugh lines lately, but Steve always takes his hands and kisses his face, telling him he loves them. It’s the truth. Tony looks so beautiful with them, and they remind Steve of what a privilege it is to grow old with him.
A bullet to mend our hearts by tonymystark
Tony is stuck in a time loop; he keeps getting thrown back to their fight in the quinjet before the whole invasion. He finally figures out how to end the loop.
Safe Haven by gottalovev, zappedbysnow
It's been three months since the Battle of New York. Four since Steve woke up in the future. Everything is still too fast, too bright, too glib. And then, as if it wasn't enough, Steve is dragged through a portal into an alternate universe. Other Him is happy, though, and that feels like hope.
No Good Deed by raeldaza for merelydovely
Steve’s not happy in the future. Tony gets it in his head that he’ll be a good friend and create a time machine to send Steve back to the 40s.
But as time ticks on, and Steve and Tony grow closer, do either of them actually want Steve to use it?
I (created from fantasies) exist solely for you by Mizzy
Six years ago, without the Avengers Initiative there to save the day, scientist Dr. Eric Selvig sacrificed himself to save the world, the almighty demi-god Thor was lost to a terrible storm, and vigilante Iron Man – spotted with a nuclear weapon trying to take advantage of the situation – was forever labelled an enemy of SHIELD.
This is a comic book office AU, where Steve is defrosted a year too late, Thor has forgotten who he is, and no one knows Tony is Iron Man.
Also includes: office pranks, inappropriate post-it notes, and superheroes who like pina coladas and getting caught in the rain.
Bright Things and Fair by sheron
The course of true love never did run smooth — and neither did time-travel to retrieve the Tesseract. When circumstances outside their control force Steve and Tony to spend more time together in the 1970, they do what two people with their history do under the circumstances: work together and try to get through it without unnecessary feelings getting in the way. Falling for each other is definitely a bad idea, isn't it?

if this is a question that interests you-- if you had to ship one of tony's exes with one of steve's exes, who would you ship?
Huh!
The thing is, I feel like most of Steve's exes are Good People who for the most part don't deserve to have most of Tony's exes happen to them. Lemme think.
The most disaster pairing I can think of is Cynthia Glass/Indries Moomji. Disaster in the sense that everyone else would be suffering.
I think Bernie/Rumiko would actually be pretty fun; they seem like they'd get along well. Well, have gotten along well, anyway.
I don't know who I'd put Rachel with. Jan, maybe. Not as wild as Ru, no, but I think Rachel would enjoy Jan's lavish lifestyle. I mean, okay, yeah, Rachel/Ru would be fun too.
There's Nat/Sharon, I guess. I feel like people ship the two of them anyway. Same for Maria/Sharon. Assuming that we're counting "people who slept with Tony a couple times" as exes, and in that case I also want Emma/Rachel.
(Emma/Marianne seems like kind of a gimme. Telepaths forever.)
In the "people who discovered they don't want to be dating Steve and/or Tony because they morally object to them" I think Roxanne Gilbert (who Tony stopped making weapons for because she was a pacifist and then she didn't date him) and Connie Ferrari (who as far as I can remember was super not a fan of Steve being Captain America) would get along or at least swap terrible "wow you dodged a bullet there" stories.
I don't think Whitney wants anyone but Tony anymore.
(@blossomsinthemist has suggested Bernie/Shulkie. Lawyer power couple!)

fic brand tag game
@welcomingdisaster tagged me to answer these questions: What is your most on brand fic you’re done? What’s your most off brand? What is a fic SOMEONE else has done that you feel like came from your own heart it was so perfect?
I think the most on-brand fic is one of my first ones and also the one I am still writing to this day, The Engineer. It’s got everything that I consider my brand: angst, some kind of Tony whump, character study and character introspection, longwinded internal thoughts, a focus on technology and the Iron Man armour.
The most off-brand fic might be Stark's Moving Castle, because it is much more lighthearted than what I usually write, is a full-fledged AU, it’s Steve POV, and both Steve and Tony are younger than what I usually write.
As for a fic that someone else has written but I feel came from my own heart.....Very hard to say. There are so many good fics, but almost none that I would have written, or at least not in the exact same way. There are some fic writers whose fics I really really vibe with though, such as dirigbleplumbing.

Favorites Rec List
so, I haven’t done any of the rec list challenges this week. to put it plainly, I don’t keep close enough track of the fics I read to be able to remember enough for every challenge. I did want to rec some of my favorite fanfics, though! these are all stevetony fics I’ve read recently and really enjoyed. an anger you can crush and fuel by @starvels (3k, T, 3490) “I’m mad at you,” Natasha says, gripping Steve’s collar so tight the shirt seams strain. Steve glances down at her hand, and his arm quivers beside her head. “I know,” he says, voice rough. notes: extremely well balanced dynamic between steve & tony. masterful use of tension. great characterization. nice to read when you want complicated feelings and also a happy ending. look at this photograph by @airplanejam (3K, T, 616) Every photo taken of Steve and Tony just seems to turn out that way, no matter what Steve does. notes: very cute, fluff, had me grinning as I read. I read this one a lot as a pick me up fic. Genesis by teaberryblue (616, 35k, T) Reluctant to make the truth about their secret weapon known, the American Government tells the world that Captain America is a man named Steve Rogers. According to public record, he died, tragically, in 1945, and he became legend. In 1998, the Avengers find a body trapped in ice. She's alive. Her name is Eve. She has Captain America's shield. notes: this is just masterfully written. I’m always a huge fan of well-done genderswap, and this really delivers. the historical sections and everyone’s emotional arcs are crazy well-done. I would read a book of it. Love (Actually) by @veryvincible (1k, ults, G) “Okay, you’re not actually mad about me making fun of Love Actually, are you?” Tony asked, sitting back. Steve huffed again. notes: This fic is an instant moodlifter. I cannot read it without smiling.
empty side of the bed by @oluka (4k, 616, M, ANGST) “You should get out of bed.” Tony doesn’t open his eyes. “Go away, Steve.” notes: read this and weep lmao

um PLEASE bring up the angelic true forms
THANK YOU, DON’T MIND IF I DO!
Briefly: my take is that even if their grace is absent, former angels and nephilim are dragging their true forms around with them everywhere. Angels and some other supernatural beings not only can perceive their true forms but in some cases also recognize people by them.*
Not briefly at all:
It’s weird to me that I never see fic that explains how angels recognize Cas and Jack even when they don’t have grace, and I’ve definitely never seen one where it’s because their true forms are being perceived. Maybe it’s because this is never addressed on the show so it’s just accepted that it works Somehow, but I think it’s also because a lot of fandom really wants de-graced Cas to be human. Whereas part of this headcanon is that Cas is never really human. In season 9 he doesn’t mind being referred to as human, because functionally, he is. But he’s actually a different kind of being entirely that’s squeezed into Jimmy’s empty body, only now he can’t get out or do things that would ordinarily be as easy for him as breathing is for a healthy human.**
Meanwhile: humans. Supernatural lore suggests that a human is made up of: body + soul + something else, which I’m going to call consciousness.
Given how we see soulless people act, it seems like the soul is where the empathy, compassion, love, and personal ethics/morality are stored. But soulless people still retain their memories, knowledge, and to some extent, goals. That’s what I’m calling the consciousness. Ghosts (which are stated to be souls without bodies***) retain their their consciousness to varying degrees (Bobby and ghost Mary being strong examples)—so we know consciousness isn’t simply an extension of the brain/body. They’re separate parts of a whole.
This fits with the implication that not having souls is at least part of why angels are bad at feelings, especially empathy and compassion, and prefer to receive orders rather than figure out morality or free will on their own. (Personally, I also like this because it also fits with the idea that Cas has been growing a soul of his own since season 4.)
So Cas is: grace (optional) + vessel (optional) + true form, even when it’s dormant + Cas’s consciousness + (maybe) the soul he’s growing.
There’s a line or two that could be interpreted to indicate that an angel’s grace and true forms are the same thing, and I think that’s the assumption in a lot of stories with human Cas. Personally, I think it makes more sense for their true forms, if they are tied to anything, be tied to their consciousness. There isn't much to indicate either way. True forms are barely addressed in the show, and never portrayed.****
Anyway I just love the idea that both graced-up and grace-less Cas and Jack have these extra-dimensional, sky-scraper-sized, incomprehensible, constantly transforming, eldritch forms with them everywhere they go, moving and gesturing in inhuman ways at inhuman sizes. I have this image of, like, the boys trying to surprise Cas with a gift or something so he closes his vessel’s eyes like that means he can’t see, meanwhile his 800 angelic eyes are perceiving things for miles around, not to mention parts of the past and future, and he has to pretend he has no idea what they’re about to hand to him.*****
That’s my true form headcanon! If you enjoy my rants, feel free to ask me about my feelings regarding Cas becoming human in fic 😅
(Footnotes under the readmore so this reply doesn’t look insanely long)
*I assume there’s already meta about this but, because until recently I’ve only interacted with Supernatural fandom by reading fic, I haven’t seen any. Also I make a lot of definitive statements about what is and is not covered on the show, but I’m not actually confident about all of them. This is going off what I’ve been able to look up and what I remember.
**This take appeals to me because I like to write and think about disability and metaphors for disability. It makes sense to me that Cas without grace might think of himself as disabled or something like it, and that other angels would feel the same way (and be dicks about it, because they’re dicks).
***We also know that souls can be corrupted/changed. Ghosts are also an example of this, as are, obviously, demons. Demons seem to lose a lot of their memories of Earth, but generally retain their knowledge. Ghosts lose whatever makes the plot most interesting. The consciousness being separate from the body is also supported by how most people in the afterlife don’t have bodies but clearly have their consciousness.
**** I insist that what we saw of Apocalypse World Michael that one time was not his true form because that was just so freakin’ dumb.
*****That’s kinda a joke example though because I actually think Cas can still “close” all of his angelic eyes. I figure in general he can filter out what he does and doesn’t perceive. Sometimes so he doesn’t get overwhelmed, sometimes so he doesn’t want to, like, forever accidentally overhear private conversations between humans who forget he has super-hearing and extrasensory perception.
