This exquisite trope about the fuck or die Monza curse by @cvrthage, @yekoc, @baking-soda and @veryspecificfantasies has bewitched me body and soul, particularly the "every year there are teammates secretly hoping it will be them (max, every single year with daniel. george with lewis) and teammates desperately hoping it won't (lewis with george)" bit, and I just couldn't resist. So here's a little George x Lewis drabble (angsty, beware).

George knows that Lewis knows he has a big fat crush on him. Everybody in this damned sport does, and George has never been cool enough to be different. The tacit agreement is that he tries to control himself and not be too much of a loser around Lewis, and Lewis pretends not to notice when he stutters or stares for a beat too long or praises him excessively in interviews. It’s a delicate balance, but they mostly make it work. Mostly.

Except there’s Monza. George is still not sure what exactly the Italians woke up when they dug the foundations of the track, but everybody knows it’s cursed, and will not hesitate to try to maim and kill if it’s not paid in lust. Every year, a teammate pairing on the grid gets chosen at random, and if they don't fuck, everybody suffers the consequences on track. Nobody has ever outright admitted to being chosen, but there’s always speculation and hushed whispers around the paddock about which team has had the misfortune during the weekend. The only real way of knowing whether the bargain has been fulfilled or not is to start the race and wait for the chain shunts to pile up. It’s never happened in all his hears in F1, even though there have been several driver pairings known to hate each other’s guts, so everyone must have been doing their part. If Magnussen and Hülkengerg have indeed fucked each other’s brains out for the greater good, it means, to George’s understanding, that everybody is in silent agreement that it’s just something to do for the safety of the whole grid, nevermind the rumours that Webber once refused point blank to fuck Sebastian. He has a poor opinion of him for it. A duty is a duty, is the way he sees it.

He entertained thoughts of being chosen and having Lewis fuck him exactly once, his first year at Mercedes. Then he realized he wanted it too much, and put the matter firmly out of his mind. The chances of it happening where nigh anyways. Albono had confided in him that Max had once told him at an after party that he hadn’t been chosen yet, despite being four years into his career at the time and “wanting it very much” with Daniel (George resolved then and there to steer clear of Max if there ever was vodka in their immediate vicinity, a promise he’s kept ever since); and George wasn’t even sure if he would last the year as Lewis’ teammate. There’s always a chance you’ll get demoted from a top team in F1.

He’s also not sure he’d enjoy it if they got picked anyways, regardless of his big fat crush, because it’s rotten to only have Lewis sleep with him because some evil supernatural entity is mashing them together like Barbie dolls, and not because he really wants to (but you could, whispers some pathetic part of him, you could let yourself enjoy it if it were to happen. He pretends he does not hear it.)

Mostly, he doesn’t think about it. It’s going on five years now since he stepped into Formula 1, and he’s somehow still in Mercedes, and they haven’t been chosen. There have been no horrific accidents in Monza. He makes the mistake of getting complacent.

And then Monza, in all its cruelty, picks them.

He senses something is off from the moment he wakes up on Friday, but he can’t quite pinpoint what it is. He is sweating more than normal, but he chalks it up to the warm Italian air. Until Toto grabs him by the scruff and drags him to his office.

Lewis is also in Toto’s office. His forehead is also beaded with sweat, and he looks vaguely ill. George puts two and two together, and his stomach drops.

“It’s us this year.” Confirms Toto. Lewis doesn’t say anything. Lewis doesn’t say anything for a really long time, until George can’t stand it anymore and blurts out. “Okay, well, let’s get it over with then. How do we go about it?”

Toto sighs. “We haven’t had to do this in a very long time, but the standard procedure means we have a room for you two-“

“We’re not doing it.” Interrupts Lewis. George’s jaw drops. The mean little voice in his head says see, he won’t touch you even when there’s inocent lives on the line. He’ll never want you back.

A muscle jumps in Toto’s jaw. “If you don’t do it it will fuck up the race, and if anything happens the FIA will investigate and I will be forced to tell them that it was us. We could get heavily sanctioned for putting other drivers at risk." You could be throwing your and our championship bids away, is what he’s really telling Lewis.

“I’m still not doing it.” Reiterates Lewis, his tone final. George gapes, trying to reconcile the man he idolizes with this stranger in front of him who would be willing to potentially throw other people’s lives away because he finds the idea of fucking George that repulsive.

“You’d put everybody at risk?” He can’t help but ask, sounding pathetically close to tears even to his own ears. He doesn’t want to know what his face is doing. 

Lewis’ only answer is an undecipherable look. In the end, he doesn’t. He gets Toto to leverage his considerable power and a technicality in the regulations surrounding the Monza situation to get the race cancelled. He breaks George’s heart and what little self-esteem he has all the same.

5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not? yes i try to! at least for the first while after something's posted. i like the livejournal vibes of a comment thread

What is a fic you wrote with the angstiest ending? i'd call them bittersweet endings rather than angsty endings but each part and grassy bits in between and Somewhere in the heart of Rome both end with the couple parting after a brief time together but like, hopefully with the sense that they found something meaningful in each other. and roman holiday kind of gets a happy ending later. kind of

7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending? tomorrow on every shore is probably the most uncomplicatedly happy in that they basically sail off into the sunset together. i think a lot of my fics end with like, the sense of relief or reconciliation of finding each other again, uniting your fantasy kingdoms, escaping a clone dystopia etc

8. Do you get hate on fics? not anywhere i can see it at least!

9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind? i saw someone say that they think of themselves as writer of erotica rather than romance, and as far as that's a useful distinction re: fanfic i would definitely fall on the Romance side of it (i have read so many romance novels lol).

10. Do you write crossovers? What's the craziest one you've written? not so much crossovers with like the two sets of characters together. i may have been known to write an AU or two in my time.

Favorite fic you've written? each part and grassy bits in between is the most like nakedly personal. i still enjoy tomorrow on every shore a lot when i reread it. i'm so tender about clone max. i really loved the process of writing magnets, the pull of the moon but now that it's out i feel less good about it lol. it's like embarrassing to say but honestly when you work on something for months and it gets less ~engagement than something very silly you spent a day on it feels, let's say, disheartening. and there are like any number of reasons why something ~hits and something else doesn't - i myself, a hypocrite, have so many open tabs rn of things i loved and still need to comment on - and it makes me feel really small and mean and churlish to tell myself writing is something fun that i do for myself because i enjoy it and then turn around like, i didn't get enough compliments on that one actually (i'm a leo if you didn't know). and i did get some truly lovely comments i will treasure and i did what i wanted to do with that story and i loved writing it and i do think it's a good story even! just like the gap between your hopes and reality sometimes is deeply mortifying. like it's embarrassing that i was excited about it. it feels weirdly exposing even though nobody is ever thinking about you as much as you're thinking about yourself lol

An estimate of how many physical books I own: Too many and somehow still not enough! My guess is somewhere in the ballpark of 150? 200 maybe? Probably no more than 200.

Favorite author: WHO can pick a favorite. My usual answer to this is Wally Lamb, but it's been so long since I've read one of his books, I'd have to think about whether that's changed.

A popular book I've never read and never intend to read: Pretty much any blockbuster YA novel, but to pick something theoretically more in my wheelhouse: One Hundred Years of Solitude. After white-knuckling my way through Love in the Time of Cholera, I just can't do it again.

A popular book I thought was just meh: The Night Circus. That book was all concept and no execution, to me.

Longest book I own: Probably either The Stand or It, not sure which is longer. Stephen King loves to put out a crazy-long book.

Longest series I own all the books to: Stephen King's Gunslinger series, which I actually still haven't read, oops.

Prettiest book I own: My mom just bought me an edition of Anne of Green Gables that has a really pretty illustrated cover.

A book or series I wish more people knew about: Ummm I don't know, I'm so bad at ~discovering niche books on my own. Most of the time I'm reading books that are either classics or well-reviewed or talked about a lot. I guess one book I really enjoyed that I haven't heard many people talk about is The Inn at Lake Devine by Elinor Lipman. I think I saw it on a list somewhere as a recommendation for people who like the movie Dirty Dancing, and it ended up being so unexpected and really, really great.

Book I'm reading now: Just finishing listening to Lie With Me by Philippe Besson on audiobook, and I checked Weyward by Emilia Hart out from the library, but I haven't started reading it yet.

Book that's been on my TBR list for a while but I still haven't got around to it: So many, because I'm very slow at reading lately. I've started reading East of Eden approximately 20 times and never managed to finish it, so let's go with that.

Do you have any books in a language other than English: I have many, because my husband and father-in-law buy me books in other languages whenever they travel somewhere out of the country. I have the first book in The Witcher series in Polish, the first three Harry Potter books and Alice in Wonderland in Hebrew; Pride & Prejudice and Jane Eyre in French; and The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe in Japanese.

Paperback, hardcover, or ebook?: When I buy a physical book, I prefer hardcover, because it bothers me how beat-up paperbacks get so quickly. These days I almost exclusively read ebooks though. It's just so much easier to have them in my phone, and I'm out of space on my bookcases anyway, ahaha.

currently obsessed with in a big Ali moment again, I was rereading bits of love on the brain last night and remembering how much I adore Levi and Bee. and I'm going to start reading the first psy-changeling book, which she cited as a huge inspiration for bride, so no doubt that will take it in a whole new direction. it's the first of her ur-texts I'm engaging with that is not utterly mainstream (literally the other main three are twilight, star wars and taylor swift) so I'm really interested to get into the more subversive aspects of what inspires her.

It's technically Saturday...You sent this weeks ago, but listen.

I had a breakdown and logged out of Tumblr so let's chat about these very beautiful fics.

In that iron ground - I sobbed. I actually read this fic out loud to my partner in like audio book format because it was very...relevant to our lives and it was healing to us both.

Tomorrow on every shore - I went into this with NO knowledge of Below Decks (I love love love reality show AU's even though I watch one singular reality show) and I thought it was sweet and perfect and everything that a fic should be. I rec.

Every Yekoc fic is scholarship. I don't make the rules. Glory from a high rise and the sequel are perfection, but I feel that way about a lot of Yekoc fic so.

three rounds and a sound - highly HIGHLY underrated. See, the thing is that...any fic that is immediately like "LA is fucking weird" has my heart 100%. I love SoCal and LA is probably one of my favorite cities in the US (despite my rejection of sunlight) and this fic healed a little spot in my heart, but I love it so so much so if you people haven't read it, that is a Maxiel fic for you!

There’s one on Minghao’s forehead, a tiny shooting star on the curve of his cheek, the soft chemical glow just enough to catch the shine of his eyes when they turn out the lights.

“I like it in here,” Mingyu says into the three inches of watery grey darkness between them.

“Me too,” Minghao says, the sticker on his cheek pulling with his smile.

"Liam lets things go on too long, too," Zayn says, his voice sounding deeper, burred with relaxation and resonating in his chest beneath Louis's ear. "You're both idiots, s'why you're good together. And also, like, awful together."

"We're not anything together," Louis says, perhaps too quickly. "Except mates."

"Ah," Zayn says.

"Bandmates. Mates in a band."

"Mm."
