The Lodge (2019)

Look past the properly-set-up-but-still-improbable development The Lodge features 2/3 of the way through. Focus instead on the atmosphere, the dread permeating throughout, and the scenes you only see peeking through your fingers.

Still reeling from their mother’s death and upset over their father’s choice to remarry, Aidan (Jaeden Martell) and Mia (Lia McHugh) are left alone with their soon-to-be stepmother Grace (Riley Keough) over the Christmas holidays. Their father, Richard (Richard Armitage), hopes quality time in the rural cabin while he finishes some last-minute business will do them all some good. After a snowstorm, unexplainable events seemingly tied to Grace’s past put their lives at risk.

This is a moody, eerie film. Right away, it plays with your psyche. Grace met Richard while he was researching the extremist Christian cult who raised her. Images that in another story would signify salvation invoke fear. A crucifix on the wall makes the voice of her long-dead father (Danny Keough) echo through Grace's head. Every time we see the portrait of Mary in the kitchen, the cracks in the varnish grow more pronounced. A loving mother becomes a ghoul. When Mia prays for her dead mother or blesses a meal, it’s a reminder of a death narrowly escaped. At every turn, all you can think of is the grainy footage captured when the 12-year-old was discovered among the bodies of her former congregation years ago. A sudden blare of organ music startles you not because it’s a loud noise. It’s disconcerting because you're reminded of a church. In this movie, there’s nothing more frightening. Except maybe the lodge at night. It’s like everything about it has been selected to chip away at Grace’s sanity.

You’re unsure if the unease you feel comes from Grace’s head or if there's supernatural goings-on. There’s something not right about Aidan and Mia. He’s nasty when he’s not passive-aggressive. She’s obsessed with this doll that’s clearly an effigy for her dead mother (played by Alicia Silverstone in flashbacks). This whole scenario rubs you the wrong way. You’re not sure how to feel about anyone. Is Grace being punished for “breaking up” Richard and Laura’s marriage? Is this an opportunity for the new mom to prove herself? Is it all tied to her past trauma, or is it a coincidence? You don't know. Finding out means facing your fears but what kind of horrors await? Is this all psychological? Is there a ghost haunting Grace? If so, whose?

The camerawork, moody color palette, and sound design all work together to prop up an excellent script. Riley Keough, in particular, is alternatively vulnerable, sympathetic, panic-inducing, and terrifying. Your eyes are glued onto her every move and emotion. Are certain aspects of the story improbable? Yes. You have to look at this less as a "could it happen" and instead as a "what would happen"? Does plausibility matter when the end results are this effective anyway? The Lodge will have you sweating just looking at a dark corner. That’s the mark of an excellent horror film. GOODNIGHT MOMMY (2014) Direction l’Autriche -une fois n’est pas coutume- pour ce film répondant au nom original de ICH SEH ICH SEH, modifié en GOODNIGHT MOMMY pour d’idiotes raisons relevant de sa storyline, frôlant le spoil. Le scénario simple mais efficace du long-métrage traite en grande partie du syndrome de Capgras -on ne rit pas-, localisé au cœur de la campagne autrichienne, l’action se déroulant dans une maison luxueuse et isolée. Deux jumeaux, Lukas et Elias, vont devoir faire face au retour de leur mère dans leur foyer, revenant d’une opération chirurgicale lourde, de type reconstruction faciale. Composant à eux trois l’essentiel ciment du casting, cette petite famille va avoir beaucoup de mal à recoller les morceaux -sans mauvais jeu de mots, m’voyez?- suite à ce retour parental: sous traitement, la mère a besoin de repos, doit éviter la lumière, et vivre au calme pendant sa période de rémission. Des conditions drastiques qui viendront se heurter à l’énergie infantile des jumeaux, menant à un conflit inévitable. Très lourd dans son ambiance glauque -le film ne comportant que peu de dialogues et quasiment pas de musique pour l’accompagner-, GOODNIGHT MOMMY va pousser peu à peu les gamins dans leurs retranchements, convaincus que ce n’est pas vraiment leur mère qui se trouve sous ce masque de bandages de compresses stériles. Ce doute omniprésent sera renforcé via un bon nombre de scènes malaisantes -et pesantes-, influençant l’oeil et le cerveau du spectateur en quête de vérité. Dérapant forcément sur des phases de huis-clos très réussies, le long-métrage n’hésite pas à distiller quelques instants-clés en extérieur, de brèves fuites troublantes qui ramèneront inexorablement les protagonistes à la maison aux stores fermés, dans laquelle se déroule la joute familiale. GOODNIGHT MOMMY et son rythme lent pourront décourager les chasseurs de jumpscares, tout comme son teint morne et terne: un format pourtant adapté à son propos, où l’ambiance règne en maîtresse absolue. On redoute la conclusion de l’histoire, malsaine, avec son tragique climax et son explication ouvertement surnaturelle: GOODNIGHT MOMMY se pose donc en indispensable alternative, côtoyant sans gêne les EDEN LAKE (2008), THE CHILDREN (2008) et autres ESTHER (2009). Attention toutefois au format sans action trépidante, qui pourrait rebuter les accros d’un cinéma de genre plus rythmé et moins psychologique. Sans prétention, GOODNIGHT MOMMY est une immersion froide et houleuse dans ce qui est sans conteste une version réussie d’un fait divers tragique, au doux parfum surnaturel, repoussant certaines limites comme peu de films osent le faire. 9 yo twin boys aren't completely sure the lady under all the plastic surgery bandages is really their mother. While I heard that some people thought it was "kind of lame....really predictable....and gross" I thought it alright and kind of nicely done. The twist was sort of predictable, at least part of it was, but (not to give it away) the tunnel scene, the different shades of clothing, one twin always prodding the other and their always being filmed close together were enough to keep it sort of ambiguous throughout the film...until that ending😳. For me the scariest part (wasn't even the twist, but which, when explained, made sense. one literally whispers almost everything to the other, and has no voice of his own) were the scenes in the mother's bedroom. sharp objects in the hands of 9yo old boys, near faces and eyes?!...not to be sexist but what's the average fine motor skill level at that age? Their question as to whether or not it's the mother was scary, don't get me wrong (her in those bandages, slinking around that house, for some reason she reminded me of a large bug - like a praying mantis walking around after them) - but not as scary as those scenes, to me at least; those were the worst, worst as in scary, not bad. The mother or son's weird vision of the mother in the forest? still not as scary/weird as those scenes. Again, overall, I thought it worked, from feeling the twins trepidation at the mother's bandaged return, to the shift that to the mother's fear of what they'll do when they have the upper hand....and the ending...whoa. just whoa. #GoodnightMommy (2015, #VeronikaFranz & #SeverinFiala): 💣🙌🏼 The film wasn't as scary as I thought it would be but it sure offers a different kind of scare that plays with perception & trauma in a way that''ll make you have trust issues with the filmmakers and the protagonists. It's atmospheric, suffocatingly unnerving, and probably will make you never want to have children. But that's not the point. The point is, see this film because it's well crafted and has a twist ending that deepens the complexities within the film and not just for shock factor.
