»Objectify«I Verena Vogler, Tutor Seyyal Carnetto

For Verena, the objectification of people is the focus of her work, which is based on Ulrich Seidl's film »Paradies: Love«. The female characters in the film treat men like objects of desire and consumer goods. Verena designed a bed – central location for the film plot – with a two-part blanket that visualises the asymmetry between the film characters: One western part consists of geometric minimalist graphic shapes and racist film quotes. It is much larger than the Kenyan part, whose design is based on traditional Kenyan cloths. Both parts of the blanket interact with each other. The viewer also has to actively intervene: in order to read the quotations, he has to grasp the blanket, move it, turn it. In general this work is about the question of interaction and the question of togetherness, certainly in direct reference to society.

Today’s film is ‘Paradise: Love’ by Ulrich Seidl (2012).

This is the first film of Paradise Trilogy followed by ‘Paradise: Faith’ and ‘Paradise: Hope’ as 2nd and 3rd films.

The beautiful frames, simple but powerful cinematography creates a bigger space to digest this hard story of -no spoilers.

Josephine's sculptures are ironic characterisations of the four sex tourists in the film »Paradies: Liebe« by Ulrich Seidl. The four clay sculptures are based on the character traits, their outer appearance, their body language & their statements. The figures look like monster women, just like the women in the film. They are fat, ageing, aggressive and sexually active.

simple, subtle but above all a sweet story of loneliness, dreams and expectations beautifully crafted and composed. - 28NV13

cheesy, cooky this film feels fresh and fun; sometimes creepy, sometimes cruel the movie works as a snapshot on the aspirations and the expectations of a teen girl, that just happens to be at fat camp.

at times we become the accomplice to the girls' many antics, at times we become the witness to the less-than-happy lives they live back home.

the camera moves silently and swiftly through the corridors and the halls of the minimalist facilities that seem to be baring all, like the girls [and few boys] that will spend their summer there.

key scenes: weighing and measuring, working out, visiting the doctor, sneaking to the kitchen, spinning the bottle, a night out, sneaking while everyone is napping.
