Then he meets the Vigilante responsible in person and sees the unholy…mouth-faces he’s up against and things get…complicated. And just how does the dorky owner of a nearby coffee shop fit into all this?

(Cas is a Vigilante and Dean’s supposed to be hunting him down and forcing him to register as a Hero, but falls in love with him instead. Oops.)

Very excited to share this strange little story. Honestly it’s get more confusing every time I try to explain it so just read it.

“Hello?” A deep voice asks. “I’m looking for Dean Winchester. My name is Castiel Novak.” The man stepping into my office is almost as tall as me and built like a brick shithouse. His eyes are hypnotically blue and if I was the kinda man who gave into romantic whims I could see myself getting lost in those eyes. His hair is dark and wild, like he’s just come from giving a blow job and someone used his hair to steer. He’s ungodly hot and wearing the ugliest outfit I’ve ever seen. I almost wish Tinkerbell was here to make fun of it. Who wears a trench coat anymore? He looks like he walked out of a 40’s mob movie. I can tell immediately that the man is trouble. See, I’ve been in this business long enough to know that the more boring someone looks, the more trouble they bring. And Castiel Novak makes beige look exciting. The guy looks like he gets off to spreadsheets. God, what I wouldn’t give to see what he looks like when he comes… Focus Dean. Focus. I don’t bother to move my boots off the desk as I draw in a lung full of smoke from my cigarette. I ain’t trying to impress anyone. I stare as Castiel pushes open the door to my office, oversized trench coat flapping behind him, looking like filthy sex in the most boring wrapping. He looks adorable as he scowls at the chair in front of my desk. He looks like an angry kitten as he begrudgingly sits down. “Can I help you with something chief?” I draw another drag from my cigarette. “Pretty sure you don’t have an appointment.”

Excerpt: 

Finally, the captain turns around. He looks Dean up and down, very quickly, and then points to a clean spot between what looked like personnel files and… a picture of a cat?

“Leave it on my desk,” he said.

It feels like he wanted to get rid of Dean, get him out of here as quickly as possible.

Great. This is their first real conversation and Dean really couldn’t care less about what the captain thought of him, but that was not how Dean wanted this meeting to go.

He all but tosses the report on the desk, nearly making it land on the floor. It gets a reaction out of Novak, and Dean is suddenly face to face with a stony yet somehow furious expression and he almost takes a step back.

“Dismissed,” Novak hisses and Dean simply swallows and leaves the room.

Thinks about the Muay Thai set-up in Tommy’s fixer-upper. The car lift. The attic that he finished himself. The beautifully painted living room with the electric fireplace and reading nook. The remodeled bathroom that used to have awful pink tiles. Buck’s seen the pictures.  He groans and puts his head in his hands. The weight of what he’s done crushes him a little bit. “Did I completely fuck up?” “No, Buck, of course not,” Eddie says, bringing a soothing hand to rub his back. “You probably just… jumped the gun a little bit.” “But he didn’t say that. He didn’t say we should slow down. He– he– he ended things.” “Well, what did he say?” So Buck tells him everything. Tells him about the Abby of it all. About his conversation with Josh. About “I’m not your last, I’m your first.” It all tumbles out of him in a rush, but once he starts he can’t stop.  And it feels good to get it all out. Once he’s finished, Eddie whistles again. It’s kind of annoying, if he’s honest. Buck thinks if Eddie could stop being astounded by his misery, that would be great.

“And yet you’re pussyfooting around me right now, so obviously there is something to worry about,” Castiel let his exasperation show, staring Meg down through narrowed blue eyes. “Tell me what the big deal is.” His expression became even more coldly unimpressed when she hesitated, and he stood up, “Now.”

Meg jerked her chin up defiantly, an instinctive response to his tone, but then let out a soft sigh. Her face, its default a jaggedly wry amusement, was serious. “They want you and Dean Winchester.”

Distantly, Castiel was ashamed of how he sank back down into the chair at those words, but mostly he was glad there was something there to support his weight. “Meg,” he started, drawing her name out as his throat dried out. He twisted his hands together, then let them fall between his knees, “Dean Winchester won’t agree to work with me.”

“No shit, why do you think Rowena ordered me to call you in?”

A bitter bark of a laugh snapped from somewhere deep in his chest. It hurt. “If you thinking that me talking to him will change anything-”

Meg shot him a pitying look, “You tend to make things worse when you talk, Cas, that’s part of why you’re paid to shut up and look pretty.” Impervious to his scowl, her face softened further, “Besides, you already tried to talk to him, right? Way back when?”

Cas squeezed his eyes shut, and felt his toes curl in his boots, but otherwise quelled any other reaction, though Meg wasn’t a hostile audience. “I didn’t try hard enough,” he admitted, low and frank, gazing up at her.

Summary: As a last resort, an angel can choose to give a human their halo to protect them from harm. That's not in any of the lore. Neither is the fact that without their halo, an angel cannot hold a vessel. Now that that's established, all Dean has to do is figure out how to get Cas back, while he works out who he even is anymore, now that he's not quite fully human.

Excerpt: He’d fallen asleep. 

It must have been close to a year since the last time he’d done that. He hadn’t meant to. He’d only meant to close his eyes to the glare of all that light bouncing off the snow. It didn’t hurt. Nothing ever really hurt anymore. He couldn’t remember the last time he’d felt pain. At least of the physical kind. He could still feel tired, though. Exertion didn’t have to slow him down, but he felt it. It was reassuring. It made him feel - human. 

Which was why he’d started pushing himself. He wanted to know his limits, but mostly, he needed to feel tired muscles from time to time, reminding him that he was not, in fact, so far removed from who he had been. That however strong he might be now, however long he could go without food or rest, his muscles could still strain, would still go rubbery and unsteady after a while. He’d never imagined he’d long to feel weak, but here he was, making his way up Denali just to feel the burn. 

He hadn’t even stopped for gear, or waited for climbing season. He’d just - made sure Baby was parked in a safe place, and started walking up the mountain. He started feeling it after a couple of hours. The change in the air made his muscles strain, but they kept responding and he kept climbing. He wasn’t tired enough yet.

It was the light that finally made him stop. He had more or less just meandered up the nearest face of the mountain, going wherever his feet could get a solid hold, and he’d found himself coming out of the shadow of the mountain to blinding light, bouncing at him from every direction. He couldn’t see where he was going. He took a few steps anyway, felt himself slide as the snow gave way under his boots, and for the first time in a long time he felt - afraid. Carefully, he crouched down, felt for some kind of solid surface, and settled onto some kind of a ledge.  

It was probably habit more than anything that caused him to fall asleep. He was tired, and the ledge was warm (or warmer than the snow, in any case), and his eyes were closed. Drifting off must have been something akin to muscle memory.
