Almost to my 2024 reading goal! 52 done, one for every week of the year (my 2023 goal) and 4 months to read my last 8 books 📚
Honorable mentions so far:
The Haunting by Natasha Peterson 2/5 rating - I loved the entire book and storyline. I was hooked. Only for it to end on a cliffhanger that is never addressed (is that still considered a cliffhanger, or is it just a bad ending?) There's no closure and more questions than answers and once I was done, I feel like I wasted the two days I spent reading this.
Cold Sweat by Vera Valentine 5/5 rating - hilarious. A perfect palette cleanser in between long-winded thrillers. I read it in an afternoon and laughed the entire time. Books don't always have to be serious, and Vera is one of my favorite authors for a good laugh.
I Can Be a Better You by Tarryn Fisher 5/5 rating - one of my favorite authors by far. The main character is so tragically relatable, and by the end, I didn't know who's side I was on. My toxic trait is that I always think that I could stalk someone and get away with it for a while, and this book gave me some great ideas.

Year-End Poll #3: 1952
Tumblr media
For our third poll evaluating the top hits of the 1950s, we're moving on to 1952. The Billboard year-end charts are still compiled in a top 30 list via the methods described in the previous poll (jukebox performance, record/sheet music retail sales, etc). With acts like Johnnie Ray, we are starting to see a glimpse into the major genre shifts that are to come in mainstream music. But it will be a few years until we see that change take hold. At this time, it was much more common to see composers and instrumentals featured on the charts.

I have commented on how we don't speak enough of the tv series genre Señoras que investigan where usually an older woman gets into detective work either as a hobby or as her real job.
Those series that go under the radar because they play on tv, they're easy going, they may have very simple plots and are not usually made by masterminds tend to have a surprisingly good representation.
There are mainly two subgenres: the idealisation of the job and the realism. The idealisation often comes with some light comedy and handsome, kind and affectionate men. The realist version tends to be more serious, while still light-hearted.
People want many things of series that often can be found in Señoras que investigan. You will find all kind of people, young and old, fat and thin, LGBT representation... Surely some of them offer more variety of characters than others, depending on the country of origin, the time period in which they were made and the style, but they are generally very open minded and not judgy, which is already a must.
And generally this is due to the fact that women write those series and participate in the creation of them, actively. They are for women too, so they have to be comforting for their audience and address the problems their audience (women) have. They may have an asshole character who is very sexist, but it is treated as such. Women get along, they help each other, they partner up with each other. They show a reality that other series don't know how to deal with and they really care for their audience.
I don't know, I love Señoras que investigan, even the average ones. You know how they will play out (they'll solve the crime, manage the situation), but can you tell what the everyday life problems of the protagonists will be? These series are full of tiny stories of everyday people and how to care about them and for them.
Probably because of all of this, they dare to show some characters or some arcs with a certain respect and taste, particularly when it comes to LGBT situations. This person they are showing could be you or your neighbor, the audience care about them.
I will now name some that I know (whether I have watched them or not) so that you can get into them too:
Murder she wrote
Los misterios de Laura ( This show was a success in Spain, so much so that it sold rights to be either translated or adapted to other countries. I actually watched some episodes of the Russian version, Mama Detektiv, until it either disappear from my streamings or got cancelled)
La Stagiaire
Candice Renoir
Agatha Raisin
My life is murder (in this one the detective is played by Lucy Lawless)
Deadloch (currently watching, it has an amazing cast full of queer women and it is funny and intriguinig)

a glimpse of summer - j.fisher
Tumblr media
part two
masterlist
pairing: Jeremiah fisher x fem!reader
warnings: some anxious thoughts + fluff + minor grammatical errors
a/n: ahhh season 2’s official trailer dropped and I’m sooo excited!
the cool air was finally lifting over cousins beach. the warmer days were approaching, the sun was shining, and the nights lasted longer. summer was coming.
these months before school was over always lasted the longest. the anticipation for cannonballs in the pool, parties on the beach, staying out until dawn, and you. your arrival was his favorite moment of the whole summer, and your departure is his least favorite.
things were different from before. you looked at each other much differently than you used to, and you caught on to his long stares and quick glances. what would this summer hold? was he still into you? the questions are exciting, but they don’t change how much time holds in between each other, before his arms could finally wrap around you.
the sound of the car parking, the doors slamming, it jerks him awake from his slumber. the clock reads 9am, and he knows by the smell of the ocean, the whistling of the wind from the beach, you’re here. the torturous months of waiting and debating on picking up his phone were finally over. he could see you again.
his feet quickly descend down the stairs, brushing past his mother, the gravel crunches beneath him as he moves to the passenger side lifting you into his arms.
“what a welcome.” you chuckle feeling your feet finally hit the ground. you pull away, those caramel colored curls still bounce in front of his eyes, his pearly white smile still spreads to his angelic eyes. nothing has changed about how the way he makes you feel, and the distance certainly hasn’t had any affect on him either.
“don’t say you didn’t want that.” he challenges, and he has a point. he can see you’ve been waiting for this too, you’ve been counting those nights and hours until you were in cousins beach once again. it’s just that this time you were counting those days and nights to see him, not just for the smell of the ocean, the sand between your toes. rather, his lips against yours, holding your hand in secrecy, the late night laughter you shared. it was all the things you looked forward to most. the scenery just so happened to be background noise now.
“we have to unpack.” your mother interrupts, and while she doesn’t want to, she’d rather share a glass of wine with her best friend than gag over young love.
you blush in slight embarrassment, she had to listen the whole car ride was your antsy finger tapping and anxious radio channel surfing. she knows Jeremiah fisher was all you had been waiting for since you left.
“I’ll help you unpack.” he grabs your bags in the back, the same bright yellow Vera Bradley pattern you’ve had since you were kid, enters his vision. he remembers when his mother gifted you that for your birthday, the smile on your face was irreplaceable. he couldn’t wait to give you your birthday gift this summer.
“she always overpacks, you think you can carry that?” your mother struggles to pull the bag out of the trunk, but he’s much stronger, taking the bag over his shoulder and grabbing anything extra that he could.
“how many clothes you bring this year?” he drops the bag at the end of your bed, instantly collapsing on the mattress he’s sure he’ll spend many nights in. he’d watched his mom set your room up last weekend, her excitement for your arrival was always uncontrollable. the weekend before your arrival signified that summer was here.
“just enough for every month.” you join him on the bed, faces turned towards each other, your smiles couldn’t be wiped. he takes his hand, wrapping his fingers around the back of your neck, pulling you closer for his lips to just brush yours.
“here’s to the next three months.”

Jealousy — Jeremiah Fisher x Fem!reader
Tumblr media
Description: every year you and your mom would join the Fishers and the Conklin’s at the cousins beach house, but this time you bring your new boyfriend…
Warnings: none except bad writing
Fandom: the summer I turned pretty
It was that time of the year again, summer, and you were so excited to return to the fishers beach house after a hard year of school, but something was going tk be different this summer.
You had a boyfriend and let’s just say that the relationship that you two have is pretty serious, there would be times where he would spend the night, only if there were no hanky Pankhurst as your mother would say, and that the door must remain open in your room.
“I can’t wait for you to meet my friends, they are going to love you.” You said as you had your Vera Bradley duffel bag hanging on your shoulder, along with your sunglasses from Walmart on the top of your head
“I know a certain someone who is excited to meet you.” Said your mother as she was loading the car “Derek, since this is so last minute. I hope you won’t mind sharing a room with one of Susannah’s boys.”
“No problem at all.” Smiled Derek as he looked at you before slinging his arm around you shoulder “and I’m excited to meet everybody as well.”
You smiled excitedly as you walked towards the trunk of your moms car, placing your duffel bag beside hers
“Ooh mom, can I drive?” You asked as you looked at your mom
Your mother hesitated before rolling her eyes smiling
“Sure but don’t wreck my car.”
“Thank you!” You said as you grabbed the keys from your mothers grip before rushing to the drivers side excitedly.
——
“Marsha, it is so great to see you.” Said Susannah as she gave your mother a hug “now where is Y/n? I’m dying to meet her boyfriend.”
She looked around before hearing a car door slam, you walked next to Derek before lacing your fingers with his.
“Y/n look at you!” Said Susannah as she walked towards you with the warmest smile as she gave you a hug “im assuming this is the famous Derek Hoffman?”
“Yep, in the flesh.” Said Derek as he smiled, you mustered a disgusted look on your face
“Please don’t say that.” You said as you playfully slapped your boyfriend “it’s embarrassing.”
“Why don’t you go inside and introduce Derek to the boys?” Asked Susannah as she pointed to the door “Belly and Steven are running a little late but the boys should just be inside so if you want to-“
“Actually, I rather wait till everyone gets here.” You said “it’s was our plan.”
“Sure that’s sound great.” Smiled Susannah
You nodded your head, grabbing a hold of Derek’s hand before rushing inside all smiley
——
“Guys. I want you to meet someone.” You said as Derek stood beside you, currently you seated everyone down, laurel and her kids just got there and you couldn’t wait any longer.
“If this has something to do with him then I want to hear it.” Said Steven
“Shut up steven and let y/n tell us her news.” Said belly as she looked at her brother before turning back to you
“Anywho, guys this Derek Hoffman, the guy I was telling you all about last summer.”
“So what are you two? Dating? Friends?..”
You looked over at your best friend Jeremiah as he looked at the two of you with curiosity in his eyes hoping that the two of you weren’t dating.”
“We’re.. dating.” You said “and we have been since Christmas of last year.”
“Well, I’m very happy for you y/n.” Said laurel as she held her hand out for Derek to shake it “welcome to the family Derek.”
You smiled widely as Derek shook her hand
“Thank you.” Said Derek
“Well who’s hungry?” Asked Susannah as she smiled “we can get to know Derek a little better over some food.”
Everyone smiled before walking into the kitchen, but as you were walking, a hand stopped you.
“Are you seriously dating him?” Asked Jeremiah as he looked at you in the eyes, you sighed before nodding you head
“Yes, and I’m very happy.” You said before walking away
——
“So what’s up with you a Jeremiah?” Asked Derek, you two were out at the pool talking, with both of your feet in the pool, stargazing at the night sky
“Nothing, we’re just friends, that’s all.” You said “we’ve been friends ever since we were kids and it will stay like that.”
“Does he know that?” Asked Derek as he looked at you “because it’s obvious that the boy likes you.”
You let out a laugh as the idea of Jeremiah Fisher liking you was a joke, that was until you saw the blank look on your boyfriends face
“Please, I do not like Jeremiah fisher and there is no way that he likes me back.” You said as you pointed at your boyfriend, but your boyfriend grabbed your wrist
“Y/n, im serious.” Said Derek “I saw the way he looked at you while you were introducing me to everyone.”
“Look, Derek i-“
“Look, it’s ok if you like Jeremiah.” Said Derek “I just need you to be honest with me.”
You were about to say something when all the sudden you heard a boy shut behind you.
“Hey guys, are you going to the bonfire with us tonight?” Asked Steven
You and Derek looked at each other before looking back at Jeremiah and Steven, you saw the look on Jeremiah’s face.
“I don’t know.” You said “I was going to show derek around cousins-“
“But it’s nine at night…” said Jeremiah “what is there to show this late at night? Can’t you two do it tomorrow?”
“Yeah bu-“
“I’m sorry Steven, im not going.”
“What why?” Asked Steven as he looked back at the door
“Well, Derek would you like to go with me?” Asked Steven
“You go, I’ll stay here and talk to Jeremiah.” You said looking at your boyfriend before walking into the door, leaving wet footprints trailing behind you.
——
You walked inside to see belly and the moms watching a movie like they always done the first night of the summer, you usually join them but with you having a boyfriend and being 17 they let you decide if you wanted to or not.
You walked upstairs into Jeremiah’s room as you saw him looking out the window, you knocked before walking in
“Hey, can I come in?” You asked as you stood at the doorframe of the room, he looked at you before nodding his head, giving you the ok to come in.
“Look, I don’t know what this about but you never skip out on a party.” You said “what is up?”
“You and Derek is what’s up.” Said Jeremiah as he looked at you “every summer it has always been the five of us and now you bring Derek along replacing me.”
You stifled a laugh before waving it off
“Im sorry, but eventually im going to have to move on from here.” You said “I don’t want to but that just a part of life unfortunately.”
“Yeah but why did you have to bring him here?”
“He wanted to meet you guys that’s why.” You said “plus Susannah has been bugging my mom about bringing him this summer so I thought I would.”
“Y/n, I really have to tell you something.” Said Jeremiah “and what I’m about to say, you need to promise me that we’ll stay friends no matter what happens.”
You crossed your arms
“I’m listening.”
“I like you ok, I have liked you since we were kids and seeing you with him-“
“So Derek was right all along…” you said as you looked away “huh, that explains everything.”
“Look, you don’t have to feel the same way about me, I just thought I would get it out.”
“Well… you did the right thing.” You said “if I wasn’t all about derek last summer maybe then we could have been a thing.”
“Y/n-“
“Look, let’s see what happens this summer and then we’ll look back in this ok?”
“Ok.”
“Now why don’t you come with me to that party? I promised Steven I would bring you down.”
Jeremiah smiled before taking your hand, with that you two left.

my friend asked me for murder show recs and i put together a list of a bunch of them and thought i'd also share it here in case anyone else who was not raised by the glow of mystery! on pbs might want an intro. extremely subjective commentary, obvs. enjoy.
hello. welcome to the world of finding television shows about people getting killed comforting. it's fucked up, but who isn't. here's a list of the ones i like and why and where to watch them.
midsomer murders (1997-current): this is one of those sterotypical "it ran for 25 years and did nearly 18 episodes" british shows. it was adapted from a book series, which are the early eps. they're really fucked up and great imo. the later ones lose that sharpness, but until seasons 20+ i think it's a really solid show. the theme song is performed on a theremin. pluses: every great british actor shows up at least once, incredibly great deaths, lots of hyper niche hobby groups, tom barnaby is the best. minuses: showrunner brian true-may quoted as saying that his version of "english countryside" is entirely white. he was booted from the show at that point, however. i've watched the entire series 2-3 times, except for s5e3 "Ring Out Your Dead" because there's a death in it that i found particularly tragic the first time i watched it and have no desire to revisit it (but ymmv). robyn's fave ep is s3e3 "Judgement Day," because a brass band plays the show's theme song at a village fete and also Orlando Bloom is run through with a pitchfork. (ACORN)
Poirot (1989-2013): truly the goat. David Suchet bodies this role. i don't know how familiar you are with christie, but hercule poirot was her recurring detective character, a fastidious little belgian living in 1930s England. in this show, it's the late 1930s for 20 years, and the sets and costumes are so good. not a single streamline moderne property in england is overlooked. the early episodes are short--40ish minutes each--but they transition to 90 minutes at some point. they adapt all of the poirot books, with the big ones--murder on the orient express and death on the nile--done as higher budget tv movies. (BRITBOX)
marple (2004-2013): another christie adaptation, with 2 actresses playing miss marple in sequence. they also adapted a bunch of non-marple stories to have miss marple in them. set post-WWII, mainly countryside english mysteries. (BRITBOX)
miss fisher's murder mysteries (2012-2015, film in 2020): set in 1920s melbourne, mfmm follows independently wealthy private eye phryne fisher. it's an adaptation of modern novels, so it's less conservative than the christies. phryne's best friend is a suit-wearing lesbian doctor. it's a sharp, smart show, and phryne herself (as well as her relationship with buttoned-up detective jack robinson) is very sexy. it ran three seasons and was followed by a crowd-funded film in 2020, which isn't GOOD, but it is FUN. there's another a spin-off set in the 1960s called miss fisher's modern mysteries, which follows phryne's niece. again--not good, but fun. nothing beats the og series tho. (ACORN)
lewis (2006-2015): this is technically a spin-off of the inspector morse series, which started in the 80s, but i've never watched it so you should be fine. this follows very un-academic inspector lewis and his very academic assistant DS hathaway in EXTREMELY academic oxford england. i really dig the pacing of this, as well as how profoundly weird smart people can be. the big downside is the actor who played hathaway is laurence fox, who's a real stinker of a dude. right-wing, racist, etc. so. ymmv. (BRITBOX)
vera (2011-current): vera is a nearly retired, irascible, set in her ways detective in northumberland. she heads her own department, so part of the appeal is definitely trim youngsters dashing to do her bidding with a "yes mum." she drives a huge old land rover, wears a raincoat everywhere, has no patience for class barriers, and in short i love her. in the newer seasons there is also a detective in her squad called Jaq who is a very cute butch. (BRITBOX)
dalgliesh (2021-current): adaptation of pd james novels following detective-poet adam dalgliesh. set in the 1970s, which sets it apart and which i quite enjoy. his character is really sensitive and thoughtful is a way that's unusual for cop shows. (ACORN)
annika (2021-current): i'm gonna dive into some of the weirder ones now. annika is still pretty serious, but the title character has a habit of breaking the 4th wall to loop the audience in on the meta nature of her thoughts--usually relating to a book or story. it's set in glasgow and they investigate marine crime specifically. annika is played by nicola walker, who full disclosure i find VERY attractive. she's norwegian, she's odd, and she's trying her best. she has a teenage daughter who's gay. (PBS)
queens of mystery (2019-current): this one is VERY odd. think british murders meets pushing daisies. there's a narrator, and occasional technicolor flights of fancy. it follows a very serious detective who was raised by her three aunts after her mother was killed. she comes back to work in her home town and has to navigate both sides of her life, plus still wanting to know who killed her mother. production was interrupted by covid, so the main actress changed between seasons, but the new person is also very good. (ACORN)
brokenwood mysteries (2014-current): this one is sort of...sillier than the rest? it's a new zealand show set in a small town. it's fairly queer (although not nearly queer enough), and one of the things i love the most about it is it maintains a roster of recurring characters (which i think is only possible because of the small size of the NZ film industry). pretty good maori rep, especially jared, a local who seems to know or be related in some way to everyone in town. i adore him. he's off the show now, and i miss him. (ACORN)
mcdonald & dodds (2020-current): set in bath, this is an odd couple partnership of an ambitious young cop lately from london and a shy older cop who has lived in bath all his life and hasn't seen action in a decade. their interactions are funny and lovely, and it's refreshing to see a black woman character allowed to be ambitious. (BRITBOX)

The themes of various Commonwealth mystery shows
Agatha Christie's Poirot: The British upper crust deserves a swift beheading at the crest of a proletarian revolution; also the most important thing is a precise moustache.
Vera: Murder reveals secrets that destroy families
Midsomer Murders: Horrible people kill horrible people; also, adoption ruins lives, for some reason
Death in Paradise: A formulaic moment of epiphany reveals all
Beyond Paradise: Death in Paradise is very popular; also, low stakes crime is just as quirky; also, don't base your relationship on reproductive compatibility
Father Brown: Never consult your local pastor for investigative advice, even though he's always right; lip service to moral depth resolves any lingering doubts
Sister Boniface Mysteries: What if Father Brown but always consult your local genius nun for investigative help instead
Brokenwood Mysteries: Midsomer Murders is very popular, but instead of being horrible, we're quirky! Also Frodo is there for some reason
My Life Is Murder: As long as you act confident enough and are also Xena, nobody stops you from interfering even though you're not technically a cop; also the difference between Australia and New Zealand is less than you think
Mr and Mrs Murder: When in doubt, try breaking and entering
Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries: Fabulous clothing and feminism are the answer to any question
Ms. Fisher's Modern Mysteries: Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries was very popular
Sherlock Holmes (Jeremy Brett series): Sherlock Holmes may have been the first great detective, but the Golden Age of detective fiction was a quarter century later, and it shows
Maigret (Rowan Atkinson series): Maigret is lawful good and finds injustice personally abhorrent

You seem like you have superb taste in murder mystery shows! I am currently watching murder she wrote for the third time, what would you recommend I watch next?
I LOVE Murder She Wrote, so excellent choice there.
I also rather enjoy and recommend Columbo (which is interesting in that you see the murder happen before the investigation, and so the thrill and attention is about how Columbo figures it out).
I've really enjoyed Father Brown so far, and Sister Boniface Mysteries. The David Suchet Poirot is always worth watching, and I also don't mind the Marple series (though they have no problem messing with the plots and changing things from the books or stories, so do beware). Also, obviously, Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries! And Rosemary and Thyme! Also, Magpie Murders.
Midsomer Murders (which I haven't seen much of and not much in a while) was enjoyable, as was Lewis, and Grantchester. Foyle's War I've heard good things about, ditto Vera, Hetty Wainthropp Investigates, Pie in the Sky, Silent Witness, and Prime Suspect.
