On the 25th of April marking Liberation Day, when Italy was “liberated” from fascism, a boat race was held in Livorno, organized by the Borgo Cappuccino one of the participating clubs. These races have a long standing tradition going all the way back to when Livorno was a harbor under Pisa’s domain. In fact the long boats used today for the races, were originally created to unload the ships that came to anchor in the port, when a new ship would arrive the various “quarters” would race to get the work for the day. The first to reach the ship at anchor got the job!
