Only 4 spacecraft have ever returned images from Venus’ surface. The world next door doesnt make it easy, with searing heat and crushing pressure that quickly destroy any lander.
In 1975 and 1982, 4 of the Soviet Union’s Venera probes captured our only images of Venus’ surface. The Veneras, which mean “Venus” in Russian, scanned the surface back and forth to create panoramic images of their surroundings. They revealed yellow skies and cracked, desolate landscapes that were both alien and familiar—views of a world that may have once been like Earth before experiencing catastrophic climate change.
Ted Stryk, a philosophy professor at Roane State Community College in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, specializes in reconstructing images from early space missions. Using data from the Russian Academy of Sciences, he has over time reconstructed the best-possible versions of the original Venera panoramas.

You really want something wild, Venera 14 included a microphone so we have sounds from Venus.
youtube
It's annoying that these are the most commonly used images of Venus because neither one is remotely what the planet actually looks like to the human eye. The one on the left is a radar image of the terrain below the cloud cover and the one on the right is an infrared view with greatly exaggerated colours. In actual reality the planet looks like an almost featureless white disk. The photo below was made by the MESSENGER probe on its way to Mercury and it's the most accurate to visible light close-up view of Venus we have.

So Venus is my favorite planet in the solar system - everything about it is just so weird.
It has this extraordinarily dense atmosphere that by all accounts shouldn't exist - Venus is close enough to the sun (and therefore hot enough) that the atmosphere should have literally evaporated away, just like Mercury's. We think Earth manages to keep its atmosphere by virtue of our magnetic field, but Venus doesn't even have that going for it. While Venus is probably volcanically active, it definitely doesn't have an internal magnetic dynamo, so whatever form of volcanism it has going on is very different from ours. And, it spins backwards! For some reason!!
But, for as many mysteries as Venus has, the United States really hasn't spent much time investigating it. The Soviet Union, on the other hand, sent no less than 16 probes to Venus between 1961 and 1984 as part of the Venera program - most of them looked like this!
The Soviet Union had a very different approach to space than the United States. NASA missions are typically extremely risk averse, and the spacecraft we launch are generally very expensive one-offs that have only one chance to succeed or fail.
It's lead to some really amazing science, but to put it into perspective, the Mars Opportunity rover only had to survive on Mars for 90 days for the mission to be declared a complete success. That thing lasted 15 years. I love the Opportunity rover as much as any self-respecting NASA engineer, but how much extra time and money did we spend that we didn't technically "need" to for it to last 60x longer than required?
Anyway, all to say, the Soviet Union took a more incremental approach, where failures were far less devastating. The Venera 9 through 14 probes were designed to land on the surface of Venus, and survive long enough to take a picture with two cameras - not an easy task, but a fairly straightforward goal compared to NASA standards. They had…mixed results.
Venera 9 managed to take a picture with one camera, but the other one's lens cap didn't deploy.
Venera 10 also managed to take a picture with one camera, but again the other lens cap didn't deploy.
Venera 11 took no pictures - neither lens cap deployed this time.
Venera 12 also took no pictures - because again, neither lens cap deployed.
Lotta problems with lens caps.
For Venera 13 and 14, in addition to the cameras they sent a device to sample the Venusian "soil". Upon landing, the arm was supposed to swing down and analyze the surface it touched - it was a simple mechanism that couldn't be re-deployed or adjusted after the first go.
This time, both lens caps FINALLY ejected perfectly, and we were treated to these marvelous, eerie pictures of the Venus landscape:
However, when the Venera 14 soil sampler arm deployed, instead of sampling the Venus surface, it managed to swing down and land perfectly on….an ejected lens cap.

A Venusian Landscape - September 28th, 1995.
"This computer generated view of a Venusian volcano was created using data from NASA's Magellan spacecraft. Magellan used its onboard radar to map the surface of Venus, which is hidden from telescopic observations by a perpetual cloud cover. Using this radar data to provide three-dimensional information, a computer was then able to produce this view of Maat Mons, a 5 mile high volcano, from a dramatic perspective. The colours used to render the surface are based on earlier colour images transmitted by TV cameras on the Soviet Venera 13 and 14 Venus landers."

Chapter 14: Confrontation
Torvola couldn’t shake the sense of déjà vu that washed over her as she opened her door later that night to see Venera on the other side. How was it that even out of her fancy robes and dress, clad in a plain linen shift, and her hair down that she still looked so regal? Well … perhaps Torvola was a bit biased. Torvola stepped aside to let Venera into her chambers, remembering all the times before that Venera had paid her a late night visit. Though, she felt that this visit would go a bit more differently than the ones before.
Torvola closed the door and turned to face Venera.
“I missed you at dinner; I hope you’re well,” Venera said.
“Yes,” Torvola replied, “I just …”
She trailed off, looking for the right words to say, to describe how she felt and how she was still feeling. There weren’t any that came to mind.
“… I wasn’t feeling well,” she finished lamely.
Venera furrowed her brow, and she began to look Torvola over, “Is your shoulder alright? Did you get hit anywhere else? Do I need to call for a healer?”
“No,” she replied, “No it’s not that.”
“Then what is it?” Venera asked.
Torvola motioned for Venera to sit on one of the chairs, she noted that the nest of blankets and pillows that her guests had slept on the previous night were no longer there. She wondered if they had all found accommodations elsewhere — did Venera help with that? Torvola sat down in a chair across from Venera but didn’t relax. She felt tense and so very tired.
‘Just tell her,’ a tiny voice spoke up, ‘Tell her how you really are feeling.’
She knew that even after all this time, even after all she had done, Venera still loved her deeply. Torvola took a deep breath, let it out slowly, and tried to relax. She leaned forward and rested her forearms on her knees.
“… It’s hard … coming back here,” she finally said as she looked down at her hands clasped in front of her.
“Not because of you,” she added quickly and looked up at Venera, “It’s everything else.”
Venera nodded, “I understand,” she said.
A small part of Torvola bristled in annoyance — how could she understand? She was so damn happy after they had retaken the city, so damn happy she had claimed her place on the throne. Everyone celebrated that week while Torvola mourned. How could Venera possibly understand the pain she felt?
She felt broken. She had nearly killed Guin today and she wondered why she couldn’t have had that response that night on the hill when it actually mattered? She couldn’t sit still anymore. Venera blinked in surprise as Torvola abruptly stood up and stalked over to the window. She looked out over the city in the dwindling twilight, clouds arced across the darkening skies, painted red in the light of the sun that had just dipped below the horizon.
“We paid for this city in blood,” she said quietly. The red tinged sky brought back memories of the city in flames and of the blood of both her comrades and her enemies that ran through the streets.
“Blood that was willingly given,” Venera replied as she stood next to Torvola, “They knew the sacrifice they were making.”
“Did they?” Torvola asked softly though the pain in her voice was still evident, “Or did they only know of war from the songs of great warriors that the bards in their taverns sang?”
Torvola knew: No one knows exactly what they’re agreeing to until they actually have to experience it. No one knows of war, actual war, through happy songs of glory sung by the victors. To say otherwise would be a lie.
“If it weren’t for them … if it weren’t for you,” Venera said, “I would be dead and this land would still be under the rule of my father. A lot more blood would have been spilled if we didn’t act.”
“I’m not saying it wasn’t necessary,” Torvola said, “but it’s something I can’t forget or forgive myself for. No matter how hard I’ve tried — the war still weighs heavy on my mind.”
“You know,” Venera said as she rested a hand gently on Torvola’s shoulder. Torvola fought the urge to shrug it off, “It’s not a weight you have to carry alone.”
“So I’ve been told.”
“Tell me what’s going on Torvola. Let me help you,” Venera was almost pleading.
For a brief moment she had considered giving in but she shut that thought down. To even think of what to admit to Venera caused her pain. She trusted Venera with her life but even she couldn’t bring herself to admit that she felt weak and broken; that she felt like she was no longer the warrior that had stood by Venera’s side and loved her more fiercely than she fought. Whether her reluctance was due to her not wanting to admit her own weakness to herself or to Venera she wasn’t sure. All she knew was she couldn’t.
She just couldn’t.
“I can’t.”
“Can’t or won’t?”
Torvola looked from the window to Venera, surprised by the hard tone her voice had taken. Venera let her hand drop from Torvola’s shoulder, “You weren’t the only one suffering after the war and you certainly weren’t the only one hurting.”
Venera turned away from Torvola as if she couldn’t bear to look at her anymore. She walked towards the hearth and looked into the dying embers.
“You left me,” Venera said - the pain in her voice tore at Torvola’s heart and she took a step towards the queen.
“Venera-,”
Venera turned so quickly that Torvola took a few steps back, her heart racing at the sudden movement. If Venera noticed, she didn’t seem to care at the moment; she was caught up in her own grief and anger, “My realm was in shambles and I still had enemies wanting to take the throne I had just won. If there was any time I needed help, needed support … it was then and you weren’t there! I wanted to help you and I had to watch as you turned me away again and again.”
“Because you didn’t understand!” Torvola argued, “You never understood!”
Tears pricked her eyes and she blinked to keep them at bay. Her heart thudded painfully, her breath came out in ragged gasps as she fought to keep control of the rage, the grief, and the guilt that roiled inside her. No one could possibly know what she was going through and she didn’t know if she wanted them to. She was hurting, Venera wasn’t helping, and so she had to leave. Simple as that.
“You didn’t even bother to try and make me understand,” Venera shot back, “All you did was sit in this damn room and fucking brood. You barely said a word to me between the time we celebrated our victory and the time you snuck away in the middle of the night. You were too much of a coward to even say goodbye.”
Torvola finally snapped, “If you truly loved me, if you truly needed me, then you’d have come after me. You’d have sent your best men, your best trackers … damn it Venera you’d have rode to the coast yourself. I was out there for fifteen years and you didn’t even bother even send a fucking letter. I left you? You were the one who left me.”
There was a long, quiet moment where neither woman dared breathe as they stared into each other’s eyes. The pain in Venera’s expression was too much and Torvola finally blinked and looked away. Thoughts and emotions tumbled in her mind like rocks in a landslide, leaving her without any words to say over the chaos in her head.
“You aren’t the woman I fell in love with,” Venera finally said, her voice barely above a whisper.
Torvola looked up sharply, opening her mouth to say something, say anything to refute this. That she was still the brave warrior that Venera had fell in love with. She was still the selfless woman that would throw her life down to save the woman she loved. She was still the brilliant tactician who thought out every detail of a battle plan carefully, taking every contingency into account. Then she thought to that night on the hilltop. The deaths that ensued because she wasn’t ready.
Saxus cut down in front of her while she turned heel and ran like a coward.
The words she were going to say died on her lips with her resolve.
Venera stared down at Torvola, a look of disappointment flashed across her features as if she were waiting for Torvola to put up a fight. To prove her wrong. She let out a long sigh and with tears pricking at her eyes she sharply turned her back on Torvola and walked out of the room. The door slammed shut behind her and Torvola was left standing alone in the dark room with cheeks glittering from the tears that now freely streamed down her face.

Viaggio Antonacci
Vendite?
Alcuni pregano San Nicola, sicuro uno sta pregando Lollo. Far piangere. Ma morire non mi spaventa più.
Atterriamo e ritorno a casa mia dopo averla lasciata in affidamento a due ospiti. L'odore è diverso, hanno fumato dentro. Ovunque. Aggiusto i particolari cambiati. Apro le finestre. Accendo candele profumate.
Allora canticchio e mi sento a casa.

here i put off doing this. way too long
💭 ✈️ 🎮 (video gamesfor. undertale ocs in particular but i dont care)🖊️💍
❤️ 🤍 💔 💘🧡 💚 💙 💜 🖤 (i thought all of the hearts were pretty cool/hj)
🍝 🍦 🍔
😊 🤔 🧐 🤩 (starry eyes for. venera)😥 😓 😞 (😞 for. undertale ocs in particular)🤒 👨👩👧👦
i want. venera and your. undertale ocs(more specific the ones u sent in the oc channel that one time ever)(i thought the one on the far left was cool but. all of them) and just to be silly throw in an. oc you barely talk about because why not.
this is for the. oc emoji stuff or whatever if u forgor(its been several days and ive been putting it off)
also would you like for me to put the. definitions next to the emojis(i would. prefer if you did this for me because i always forget btw) or liek. u dont care. or wyateverf.
I am fine ever with you not putting the things next to the emojis (I just open a separate tab and copy and paste the questions over) but I can definitely do that for you ya ++ edit like. almost at the end (currently on thinking emoji). I fully misread the part about venera and undertale ocs the first few times so I've just been doing random guys plus venera and the occasional undertale oc. genuinely my bad. my reading comprehension is not. especially good today. the rest will be. venera and undertale guy focused solely and stuff
💭 THOUGHT BALLOON — what is your oc's MBTI, enneagram, and/or other personality aspects (if known/interested in)?
I actually just end up giving almost all of my ocs a shuffle of intp/istp/intj ; the only outlier I have is. where I do the same thing except it's entp/estp/entj for more outgoing characters. the reason for this is because I've taken this test like three times and I got 50/50 split on intp/istp and I took it again recently and got 50/50 on intp/intj and I only know anything about those ones ; everything else (ennegram/other) I. don't know
✈️ AIRPLANE — does your oc like traveling, or do they consider themselves a more homey person?
all of my ocs are. homely people. though a select few (makya and venera and. probably someone else I'm forgetting) are very not
🎮 VIDEO GAME CONTROLLER — what are three of your oc's favorite hobbies?
Light likes reading, Jianwei likes theater and other related art forms when he can manage the money for it, and Gamma. apparently wanders up mountains. (they like gardening)
🖊️ BALLPOINT PEN — does your oc have any tattoos? do they want any (more) tattoos?
Rana (twst oc) actually does have one but. only one. a claw one on his back. otherwise Makya has a few (mostly skulls and clouds and whatever) but only in that au that's set like. I think ten years post canon. before that he was too busy living in the literal 1950s and then being cursed to bother. oh and light has those cracks on their bones ; but that's less tattoo and more. cracks on their bones.
💍 RING — does your oc have any piercings? do they want any (more) piercings?
Jianwei has ear ones, Makya has. a lot (one on lip, three on ears, two near eyebrow[one above one below]), and probably more I'm. forgetting. but I think most don't really tend to give them very often.
❤️ RED HEART — what are three of your oc's positive traits?
I can't. really think of any (too large of a selection to chose from) ; though. I mean a good plus for all of them is that so far none of them has ever eaten a person. that's like, so cool and positive of them right
🤍 WHITE HEART — what are three of your oc's neutral/questionable traits?
Percei (other twst oc) technically is half eldritch abomination/parasite-trying-to-achieve-symbiosis-but-oh-my-god-that-isn't-how-science-works. it's only morally questionable because Percei's other half is like, full 14 year old boy dying slowly because of that. they both know and are totally okay with it but. definitely questionable. / Venera. is really secretive. which isn't really a big deal outside of the antag!au and even then in the antagonist au it's less "keeping secrets because I keep secrets" and more "if I do not lie I will be potentially put in extreme danger" so it's. definitely a trait. / Light. tends to disengage mid conversation sometimes to answer the little voice guys in their head. this interrupts many conversations. they do not feel keen to stop this. though in serious situations they can and will ignore the voice guys in their head until they are no longer in peril.
💔 BROKEN HEART — what are three of your oc's negative traits?
Jianwei would sell your kidney for you without telling you if he thought he would get enough money out of it / Percei is a walking murder. like literally. he is dying perpetually / Rana holds a lot of repressed anger. he is so angry. he tries to funnels this into enthusiasm, but he is not very good at it so he's just kind of. pissed off. but he smiles very tensely during that.
💘 HEART WITH ARROW — what and/or who do(es) your oc consider the most important to them?
most of my ocs have the typical 'friends and family thing' - though antagonist venera is the only one with a specific person they are like. fully attached to. no one else.
🧡 ORANGE HEART — does your oc tend to prioritize family or friends?
makya would prefer family, but. he accidentally chose friends when it came down to it anyway. jianwei firmly prioritizes family. venera prioritizes family - though it's not really their choice (think: shapeshifter family. not. nuclear.) if she was allowed to chose it'd probably be friends. light prioritizes family they chose - which technically could count under friends. gamma prioritizes friends. rana prioritizes friends. percei prioritizes family, though it depends (rana ranks above distant family in percei's eyes, but his parents and rana are sort of on equal grounds of importance to him.) hong prioritizes family. he once prioritized friends. he no longer thinks that way. ch'en prioritizes family - though he sees them more in a typical found family light then the shapeshifter type family. gongdai prioritizes family. I could go on but I ran out of names
💛 YELLOW HEART — how many languages does your oc speak? what language(s) are they learning, if any?
I don't really think about it - only major exceptions are Light (zalgo and arial), Makya (fluent english & russian, conversational german and french, somewhat okay italian), Rana & Percei (fluent common, shockingly good old trade, and native nothern rosen)
💚 GREEN HEART — does your oc prefer being inside or outside?
I have said it before but. all of them are inside people except makya, jianwei, and venera.
💙 BLUE HEART — does your oc have any cool/special powers and/or abilities? how are they with magic, if it exists in their world?
Venera can do some pretty heavy illusion work, but mostly they just use it for parlor tricks and storytelling. Haven't sorted out Rana & Percei yet but they probably could do something cool once I do. I say venera is pretty good at it, but it was hard to get to this point (they had a lot of time to practice.) and rana is average, while percei seesaws between "prodigy level good" and "astonishingly bad" depending on their health of the day
💜 PURPLE HEART — what is your oc's ancestry/genetic background?
I try not to think too hard about it. makes my head spin (I have way too much information about all of them.) the most detailed chart I've ever made on a family tree was for this one naruto oc named Itori. I charted out everything to his great great grandparents. I never want to think about it again. (I do have charts, but I refuse to do this one unless given specific characters.)
🖤 BLACK HEART — has your oc killed or seriously wounded anyone before? have they broken someone's heart and/or broken someone's trust?
Okay so the first one kind of varies. I don't often let my ocs explicitly kill people, but it's definitely happened at least once for most of them (makya was a very. infamous? mercenary? sort of. he was in a group of mercenaries but he wasn't really known for his work. he moved on to mafia work after being cursed) ; Jianwei had a sister once. he does not have a sister anymore. she's not really dead in any way that'd matter - but he definitely doesn't claim himself as her family now. it'd be kind of a dick move to after everything and whatever, anyways. [he counts for both of the last ones]
🍝 SPAGHETTI — what is/are your oc's favorite food(s)?
Sirik likes lasagna. this is the only thing that comes to mind (I don't often think about ocs favourite foods. and also I've been at this for like fifty minutes now)
🍦 SOFT ICE CREAM — what is/are your oc's favorite ice cream flavor(s)?
Jianwei likes mint chocolate chip, Venera likes chocolate though he likes trying weird flavours if he kind find them, Makya likes cookies and cream, Sirik likes neapolitan, and. I don't know. Karius likes rainbow sherbert.
🍔 HAMBURGER — is your oc good at cooking? are they good at baking? which one do they prefer?
I honestly forget there's a difference between the two. Anyways, Makya is good at cooking but awful at baking comparatively, Sirik can bake but sucks at cooking, Rana can do both but it's really hard to convince him to try, Percei can do neither but is willing to try if asked, and Karius can do both - but needs to be carefully talked down from attempting to do so very often. he tries very 'adventurous' combinations that taste genuinely awful.
😊 SMILING FACE WITH SMILING EYES — what are your oc's career/general life desires? what do they want to get the most out of life?
jianwei varies between conman, sad guy, and that one homeless guy that sleeps on playgrounds and trees sometimes. he generally tries to take it a day at a time - big picture thinking stresses him out. he mostly wants to just get a roof over his head right about now, I'd imagine
🤔 THINKING FACE — what are some of your oc's quirks/mannerisms?
jianwei stares forlornly into the distance a lot. this is just his default facial expression. he has no idea he does this. antagonist v has trouble understanding what is and is not edible sometimes (??? why keep fake fruit on a table?? it's fruit. in a fruit bowl. why is this not edible?????) ; I'd share more fun facts but. my eyes are kind of starting to hurt. I've been looking at this tumblr box for an hour now.
🧐 FACE WITH MONOCLE — is your oc more logical or emotional?
v is more logic driven by emotion ; antag!v is more emotion driven by emotion. sirik is emotion driven by logic. karius is logic driven by logic.
🤩 FACE WITH STARRY EYES — is your oc a planner, or are they more spontaneous in their actions?
venera is a planner but only in the short term, and only so they can hold up the fact they tend to be spontaneous if they can get away with it. antagonist venera is a planner, but only to hold up the fact they have no idea what they're doing or what's going on at any moment of the day
😥 SAD BUT RELIEVED FACE — is your oc prone to getting stressed out, or is it easy for them to keep their cool?
Venera keeps their cool really easily - but most of antagonist venera's like entire personality is being stressed. their face tends to hide that though (resting face is very. 'super evil' aligned. they do not know it does this.) sirik is prone to being stressed easily too and doesn't really hide it - karius is also stressed, but unlike sirik, very tries to hide it. he mostly succeeds too.
😓 DOWNCAST FACE WITH SWEAT — is your oc open-minded or stubborn? are they inquisitive or do they prefer to keep to their bubble of knowledge?
venera is open minded, but prefers to keep to themselves unless pushed otherwise. (see: the literal fucking ancient tomb they have in their room they've never once tried to decipher. if someone went "hey, venera, what does this book in ancient greek say." they'd probably find a reason to try) ; karius is. very stubborn. though he's naturally inquisitive he tries to curb that because. that's not really the best stance to have in his world and whatever
DISAPPOINTED FACE — does your oc attract others, or do they tend to be left alone?
Light attracts others - they at first generally preferred to be alone but. the giant void of darkness really tends to change perspective. they no longer like being alone.
🤒 FACE WITH THERMOMETER — does your oc get sick easily?
venera gets sick all of the time. they don't really show that unless it's really bad though. inversely, antagonist venera actually has a really good immune system - though they tend not to cause a scene if it's really bad, they'll get all annoying if it's like a common cold or something.
👨👩👧👦 FAMILY WITH MOTHER, FATHER, SON AND DAUGHTER — how many people are in your oc's immediate family? how many people are in your oc's extended family? do they have aunts, uncles, cousins, grandparents, etc? who in their family are they closest with? are they close with their birth family, or do they have a found family?
Venera has the rest of their little shapeshifter clan guys. Antagonist Venera has Macaque (which. probably counts?). Sirik has Karius. Karius as Sirik. Light has the void (and that melty guy in it). Gamma has. Omicron. probably.
#venera.#fallout: canon aligned venera#oc things#voices of the void#ask games#I started this at 6:06. oh my god#for reference it's currently 7:40.#I don't have any cool things to say. I want to fold into a chair and sleep for ten years

Roscosmos Target/Mission Venera
In space race time all countries think that the atmosphere of Venus is like Earth's atmosphere, but that is wrong Venus's atmosphere is very hard and there is acid rain, but they don't know that. Then Roscosmos decided to launch a spacecraft to Venus and they named it Venera. They launched 14 Venera since 1961 spacecraft to Venus. In 1961 they launched the first Venera called Venera 1. Venera 1 is almost like Chandrayaan 1. Venera 1 was the first spacecraft that went to another planet. It had gone outside the Earth, but before reaching there RSA (Roscosmos) lost RSA's connection with Venera 1. And the Venera 1 became a failure.
