The house is chaotic today, humming with energy as everyone prepares for the night’s event. Servants bustle through the halls, their hurried footsteps echoing off the polished floors, arms laden with flowers, lights, and trays of delicate sweets.

And there she is, sitting on the edge of her bed, clutching a single rose in her hand. There are six more in the cupboard, along with a black velvet jacket she never returned, keeping it as if she had some right.

She can’t bring herself to part with the jacket, any more than she can with these crimson roses.

She can’t just escape him, can she?

A week spent trying to avoid those caramel-brown eyes that melt her from the inside, then set her on fire. Even in his absence, He occupies her every conscious thought. Even sleep has abandoned her.

There’s a panic room in this mansion, a place she used to retreat to in her teenage years when she needed space to think. Now, she goes there to hide. She has switched off her phone and laptop and has jammed the mansion’s CCTV, all outlets through which he might reach her.

And yet, he always finds her.

Like the faint but unmistakable scent of sandalwood, cloves, and leather—a ghostly embrace, stirring memories she’s been trying to bury. It doesn’t matter how many locks she secures or how many hours she spends convincing herself that he can’t reach her. He does. He always does.

Then there’re the roses. A single, crimson bloom, soft and delicate against the stark emptiness of her bed, left there every night.

A message? A warning? A claim?

Or an apology? A persuasion?

He won’t stop, will he? Not until she’s his again. Or until she proves to him that she never will be.

But until then, she’ll live with the scent, the rose, and the weight of his presence.

She doesn’t like jewellery, especially heavy earrings—they make her ears ache, dragging down the delicate lobes with their weight. Like now.

Her hand moves instinctively, pulling them off without a second thought. The earrings clink against the vanity as she tosses them aside.

She’s not going to bear any pain. Not anymore.

She had barely blinked when she heard the details. Apparently, several humiliating footage of his dalliances with not just one but two individuals of different genders have been circulating for a couple of days, details that had thrown the entire family into chaos.

The golden light highlights the sharp angles of his face, tracing the rough edge of his stubbled jaw. He looks tired, faint shadows under his eyes barely noticeable unless one looks closely.

Anger, hate, desire, longing course through her veins like hot coal. If her body doesn't behave today, she'll punish that traitor so hard.

"What are you doing here?" she feels proud of the nonchalance with which she delivers the line.

He doesn't respond immediately, his caramel-browns sweeping over her, dark and menacing, in his calmness.

The longer he stares at her, the fire in his eyes wraps around her lungs and tightens. His gaze descends over her body. The look burns like acid, from her breasts, to the thin dupatta covering her midsection, to the tip of her toes.

It's as real as a rough hand sliding down her body, as tangible as the sweat gathering on the skin of her back despite this cold weather.

It's maddening how her skin comes alive under his gaze, prickling under the layers of silk and jewels as if his eyes alone could strip her bare.

"I can ask you the same question. What are you doing?" he finally responds, his voice smooth and unbothered, a stark contrast to the turbulence in her chest. "You're a hard person to find, Miss Gupta."

She wants to cry, to scream.

They're back to that all over again.

The toes of her bare feet dig into the carpet as she wills herself to stand tall, even as his presence threatens to pull the ground out from beneath her. "I don't have time for your games tonight."

"Is that what you think we do? Play games?" He takes a few steps towards her, the soft carpet muffling his footsteps, but she feels each one like a tremor in the ground beneath her feet. "What do you have time for, then? Playing dress-up?"

"Don't you dare judge me," she snaps, closing the distance between them and pointing a finger at him. "Answer me, what are you doing here?"

He doesn't even flinch. Of course, he doesn't. He's Arnav Singh Raizada.

Instead, he leans in, eyeing her finger that is aimed towards him, his presence swallowing the remaining air between them, a faint, sinister smirk curving his lips. "Celebrating your engagement, of course."

She sucked in a sharp breath. He says it like a punchline to a cruel joke. His smirk is mocking, cold, but there’s a barely contained fury smoldering in his eyes, like fire glowing beneath the coals.

"So this is it, huh?" His voice is gravel, but it slices her as cleanly as a whip, as he hovers over her small frame. "You're ready to get married? You didn't even think of telling me?"

Her jaw tightens. The audacity!! How dare he come here, demanding answers?

She straightens her spine, forcing herself to hold his gaze. Then she solves him hard with all her might. "It's my life." Another solve. "I can marry whoever I want." Another. "Why the hell do I need to inform you?"

And finally, the fire within him flared, fanned by her anger.

He grabs her wrists, turning her effortlessly, then holding her arms twisted behind her back, firmly but not painfully. His chest is tightly pressed against her back, her nearly bare back. She can feel the heat radiating off him. The buttons of his shirt rub against the exposed line of her spine with each breath they take.

His nose grazes her temple as her body starts to tremble. She shuts her eyes tightly. His scent wraps around her, intoxicating and inescapable.

God, she missed him so much.

She turns her face slightly causing her forehead to brush against the roughness of his jaw.

"Why do you need to tell me?" he snarls, right against the shell of her ear. That voice of sin and fury, rolls down her spine in waves, spreading throughout her body, pooling low in her belly. "I'll tell you why. Because you're destroying my sanity, invading my thoughts. If you'd hidden one more day in that godforsaken panic room of yours, I'd have brought down that mansion to the ground and dragged you out of there."

Her heart pounds as she shoots him a venomous look. "I asked you to stay away. Why can’t you just stay the fuck away from me?"

"Get one thing clear in that pretty head of yours. I'll stay away when I want to." His breath is hot and maddening, sliding down the curve of her neck. "Tell me, what are you really angry about? Is it the shame of how easily I fooled you... or that you couldn’t outsmart me?"

She scoffs, trying to mask the shudder running through her spine. "I hate liars."

"Liar, huh?" His voice drips with derision. "What are you? You told me you wanted to get the hell out of here. Now look at you... all dressed up... ready to get engaged to a snake."

"I don't need to explain myself, especially not to you."

"Oh, you do." He growls, his voice a dark, dangerous rumble, "We have a deal."

She cranes her neck sideways to look at him. Her eyes lock onto his magnificent ones, and for a brief moment, she forgets to breathe. The caramel-brown hue is almost negligible, reduced just to a rim on the outside, turning his eyes into two dark abysses which will devour everything.

"What deal?" she whispers, barely able to force the words out.

"You. Are. Mine." There's no humour in his voice, only a dangerous promise.

She can feel the anger bubbling up inside her, hot and furious. "I am not yours...not anyone's...I am mine."

He chuckles, that bastard just chuckles.

He leans in as their nose almost touch and she feels his murmur against her lips, tasting his words. "Oh...You are mine. It would be much better if you start acting like one. I'd bathe this while city in blood before I let you change that. There will be no one but me."

She chuckles this time, breaking away from his hold and spinning around to face him fully. She can already feel the heat of the wildfire she's about to ignite. "You said, 'There'll be no one after you fuck me?'"

She locks eyes with him, her words like venom. "Good thing you never did."

Like the taut string of an arrow being snapped, his hand shoots out, gripping her neck, not hard enough to hurt, but enough to pull her closer, their faces inches apart. Her hands grip his wrist as her nails sink into his muscles. Her breathing speeds up, matching his, as his voice drops into a guttural snarl.

"You think I care about that? You wanna know why I’m here? I’m here to take what’s mine."

Her heart goes wild as his words sink in. His eyes, dark and unwavering, lock with hers, challenging her to look away. "No matter what you think," he continues, his voice like a rough caress, adding more wild beat to her already frantic heart, "I’ve been more honest with you than anyone in my life. And I’m being honest now," he whispers darkly causing every cell of her body to hold breath, waiting for his next words, "I want you," and then his voice drops even lower, "....in every way a man wants a woman."

Her pulse roars in her ear as his forehead touches hers, noses rubbing against one another and then he says it like a secret, "I want to sink my cock into you and fuck you until you scream my name."

She closes her eyes as her vision blurs, making her head heavy. His lips glide along her cheek as he continues, ''Can you be honest with yourself? Then, make a decision, Khushi."

He'd met the female nearly ten times, and he couldn't deny he felt something with her that he'd never felt around any other female. He cursed her damned clothing, her beautiful arms, her exposed midriff, showing her gorgeous figure, muscles shining in the light of the falling stars.

When he caught her eye and raised his glass of wine in her direction, smiling and watching her smile and return his gesture, from dancing for hours at night, sparing with each other all morning, Cassian and Tanwyn had shared plenty of flirtatious looks and acts, he body still tingled from when while dancing she had trailed her hand over his chest and abs, as if feeling every curve of his muscles.

Opening the box revealed a delicate silver necklace encrusted with tiny zircons that matched the colour of Tanwyn's eyes perfectly. "These were mined from Illyria, it's a gemstone used for protection charms there," Cassian provided, "Not that I think you need it..."

Tanwyn's fingers trembled as she carefully removed the necklace from its packaging, her gaze fixed on the stunning gemstones. "It's beautiful," she murmured, her voice laced with awe and gratitude. The thoughtfulness behind this gift touched her deeply.

With gentle hands, she looped the chain around her neck, letting the pendant settle against her chest. The cool metal contrasted sharply against her warm skin, sending shivers down her spine. She looked up at Cassian then, her eyes shimmering with emotion. "Thank you… it means more than you know."
