Was talking to @disasterfred and other skateboarders recently about the annoying and aggravating problem of scooter kids at skateparks that has been happening for some time now. Skateboarders worked hard and dealt with politicians, city officials, mayors….raised money…petitions signed…all so skateboarders could have a place to enjoy their activity without having to deal with concerned citizens, property owners, security guards and police. Before the early 2000’s, you were hard pressed to find a skatepark…now it’s odd if a city or town doesn’t have one. After all that hard work, it seems that regular people have taken notice to these facilities and think it’s a great place to bring their small child or toddler (of which some seem like they just learned to walk/run) to put around on a scooter whilst the parents stand by oblivious and sip their coffee whilst conversing with other parents or if by themselves, they are embraced by the warm glow from their smart phone and it’s distractions, while skateboarders have to REALLY pay attention while they are skating to small kids who just go wherever they want without any rhyme or reason to who or what is hurtling towards them at speed, which could cause both parties to get hurt. Sadly, in some situations where there is a collision, the skateboarder gets blamed and gets screamed and yelled at by a parent of a now hurt (and possibly crying) kid who probably had no business being there in the first place. So, with all that said, skateparks are not for toddlers. I can’t do much since these spaces are public, but I can draw hilarious drawings with a message and put it out there. Please let skateboarders enjoy these spaces that were built for skateboarders, and if you think that’s unfair, go through the city’s and town’s red tape and jump through the applicable hoops like all kinds of skateboarders already had.
