Five years ago a tiny baby lamb came into our care after being rejected by his mother on a local farm raising sheep for wool and lambs for meat. Serendipitously, our vet, Dr. Natalie, happened to be on a ranch call at the farm and saved Finn, bringing him to @blackberrycreek where he will be safe and loved for his entire life. Finn’s story is a gentle reminder that rejection, no matter how painful, might actually be the thing that saves you. Tomorrow I go back to work. Today I got in some really good snuggles with this guy. Today he had his annual vet visit, and got a good report. He has been living with diabetes for 3 years. He is likely about 13 or 14 years old, with some sight and hearing issues. But take him on a long walk, and you'll have trouble keeping up! There is beauty in death, and mystery. And for our resident unicorn, Bill, more than a little magic. So often we humans see death through a lens of fear instead of embracing the mystery of the unknown. Bill had the kind of death we all hope for; a peaceful slipping away, a release from the pain of a chronic bone infection and subsequent crippling due to his selectively bred genetics. A drifting off to the Other Side, cozy in his bed after a lovely breakfast surrounded by those he loved most. This was not the death intended for Bill. Born on a Northern California farm raising turkeys for “humane” lunchmeat, he was meant to be killed at 5 months old for a sandwich. Commercially raised turkeys are not protected under animal welfare laws. Standard practice is to shackle them upside down by their feet, slit their throats with a rotating blade, and then place them in scalding tanks meant to loosen their feathers. Many who miss the blade are boiled alive. If this makes you sick to your stomach, that’s good. It should deeply trouble every compassionate person. If you’re still eating animals and justifying it with religion, culture, tradition, “humane washing,” sensory pleasure or anything else, you are quite literally paying for this to happen. Hard to hear? We know; we‘ve been there and have felt the shame and sadness. But just think how much harder it is to be the turkey. Once we know better, we must do better. As we did for Bill. You’ve heard of Grumpy Cat? Meet Grumpy Cow... This little muffin is Goose, who we’ve affectionate dubbed “Grumpy Goose” because of his hilariously crotchety facial expressions. He’s actually a very happy boy (though he doesn’t always look it 😆) saved from being killed in the dairy industry last month by @goatlandia_sanctuary because he was born male and humans wanted to drink his mother’s milk. We’ve been fostering Goose who has become a wonderful ambassador for babies born into the dairy industry as most people never realize a cow has to become pregnant and have a baby (who is then taken from her) to produce milk. CROMWELL UPDATE: Cromwell is doing AWESOME and got a visit from Mom (along with some strawberries and a half-hour belly rub) at UCD Vet Hospital today! The doctor said he was really pleasantly surprised by how well he is progressing, and though healing will be very slow, it is moving in the right direction (swipe to see his precious cast 🥺)! He saw him get up and use on his bad foot twice today which means that the pain meds they have him on and the block on his good toe (to take weight/pressure off the injured one) is working! Unfortunately his IV catheters in his ears stopped working and @_mother_of_chickens got the chance to learned a lot about the challenges of getting catheters to stay functional in these big guys. They are giving him a Fentanyl patch this evening to manage pain. This should last until his next bandage change at which point they can try to reinsert the ear catheters while he’s sedated. He did NOT like the sound of the electric razor to buzz off some hair for the patch, but Dr. Turner was very patient with him. We are so grateful for the doctors, residents, and staff at UCD and for all of you who are cheering him on!
